It would be impossible to do any remodeling without running into some glitches. (The shower drain in the upstairs unit was leaking into our master bathroom and that had to be inspected by the building and fixed by the other owners before we could proceed.. We couldn't take part of a wall down because telephone wires were located in the area. The large mirror in the master bathroom had to be cut down because we expanded the shower. The drain in the new tub in the master bathroom wouldn't work correctly...and some other stuff along those same kind of lines.) But no matter what the issue or the problem, the project foreman (Mick) and the carpenters/tile guys/jacks-of-all trades (Artur and Marek) were cheerful, patient, and respectful.
The Neighborhood Remodelers office staff (Kerin and Samantha) was also friendly and helpful. Their project estimates were reasonable and very close to actual costs (except for the granite in the kitchen which we knew we were way over budget on.) If we have any suggestion it would to improve the way in which they structure their bills, which we found very confusing -- but usually accurate. Ultimately they were able to reformat the bills so we were able to match up changes, credits, and progress payments. And again, they were very patient with questions and frustrations.
The roof looks great and our leaky issues are gone. The crew did a great job with communication, and cleaned up very well. My only critique would be a more thorough inspection during the estimate phase. It was not discovered until after the crew was already tearing the roof off that our house did not have any underlayment (it's 105yrs old). The estimate went up by 40% in a heartbeat but obviously it needed to be done. I just would have liked to not be surprised by that but I'm a new homeowner so I'm not sure if that's unrealistic ;)
Once it came time to start the actual remodel, Neighborhood organized two initial project meetings where we met all of the individuals who would be working on our bathroom (project manager, main contractor, plumber and electrician). We greatly appreciated the fact that Neighborhood organized these meetings at a time that was conducive to our schedule (i.e., very first thing in the morning). After these initial meetings, they started work immediately. Both Bill (Project Manager) and Peter (Primary Contractor) checked in regularly regarding progress and were extremely quick to resolve any open issues. Peter was great about checking in on any and all design decisions. Neighborhood also took care of the entire permit process (which included multiple inspections). Once we actually started the work, Neighborhood finished the entire job in about eight weeks. We are extremely pleased with our new bathroom, especially the custom shower and custom shelving units
This organization is tremendously organized, prompt and professional...from providing the quote, to managing the project, to being on time each and every day, to communicating with us throughout the entire process. Mike Rosseland was our project manager and he visited a couple of times a week and worked hard behind the scenes to make sure things ran smoothly,, etc. Mike was very good about communicating with us about what was going on and keeping the project on track. Paul was our job foreman and he is amazing. His skill and work ethic are unbelievable. Paul offered ideas, suggestions and guidance to us that was invaluable and really made a difference in the outcome. His experience is so extensive and he willingly shared his thoughts with us. Paul's crew, Martin and Emilio, were exceptional. They were prompt every single day, worked diligently for long hours, and did high quality work. I can't say enough complimentary things about Paul and crew.
We also used Abbey Henning's design services to help us with some of the choices we made (tile, countertops, light fixtures, paint color, etc.) and we are so pleased with her suggestions and help. Abbey worked hard with us to know what we liked and offered spot-on suggestions.
This was a huge project (for us) and we couldn't be happier with the outcome and having chosen Neighborhood Remodelers!
The workmen were friendly, reliable, punctual and skilled. They put down floor protection and cleaned up every night. They gave me plenty of time to inspect the work in process, and touched up anything I noticed. Found a small problem after they were done, and they came right back and fixed it. Very satisfied, and would use them again, hands down. Great job.
They were very precise in their measurements. Our bathroom (it turns out) was not totally squared and true, so they made the needed adjustments to keep the new shower square and true which was necessary for the new shower door.
The total job took a little longer than predicted, but that was partially due to additional needed tile was back-ordered. They were careful and meticulous and did not rush through the job.
I was in contact often with the project manager who always returned my emails promptly.
I look forward to be able to use them again for another bathroom.
A long overdue review. The project was completed several months ago, but I had a long trip soon after, followed by the busy holiday season. Here it goes...
I accepted bids from 4 different companies. On the low end was a contractor who came with a brochure of cabinets to choose from. On the high end was one of those you hear on radio and TV commercials. Neighborhood Remodelers and another company were in the mid-range category. I awarded the project to NR because I like their team concept. You know who you'll be dealing with day in and day out. I also like the flexibility of buying the materials myself if I wanted to. They pass on their discounts to you. You walk into a Studio 41, Crawford Supplies, Abt Electronics (of which I happen to be a loyal customer), or a tile shop. You tell them you?re working with NR and the discounts automatically apply. I know because one time, I forgot to mention that NR sent me there. When I did, the price dropped 32%.
How the team concept work is, you first meet with the salesman/owner (Luke). He emails you a ?Scope of Work? proposal with the Angie?s List discount, which I was able to negotiate a little bit more. Once a contract is signed, a team is assigned to you and they all come to meet you. I'm sure they do a lot more, but from my point of view, my team consisted of the designer (Jill) who basically configured my cabinets and drew the blueprint, a project manager (Mike) who manages the timeline and was my go-to person for questions and issues, and a foreman (Peter) who was the all-around carpenter, plumber, electrician, tile installer, painter, appliance installer because mine is a small kitchen. I like every single person in my team from the moment I they were introduced to me. They were all very responsive even after the project is done. I like that I could communicate with them via email because if I remembered something late at night, I did not have to wait to call during office hours.
Jill was superb to work with, very knowledgeable and helpful throughout my selection process. She even replied to my late night and weekend emails, not that I expected her to! The project only ran into 2 unexpected issues. For the first one, I emailed Mike and he was on-site within 45 minutes to assess the situation, make a call, and provide a solution (for a price of course). The other issue was resolved over email and the countertop folks were scheduled to provide the solution right away. I also appreciate the way they handle billing. You know what to expect and you?re dealing with efficient people. No surprises.
Lastly, I cannot say enough about Peter the foreman. He comes in with a smile every day. Did everything by himself, from demolition, haul-away, to completion and cleanup. I counted that he only actually worked 12 days. The other days were delivery days, floor install, etc. Sure, not everything is perfect. (My friends keep pointing out imperfections to me!) One cannot be a jack of all trades after all, but overall, he did a great job.
Kitchen remodeling is hard enough on the homeowner, but Neighborhood Remodelers made the experience as pleasant as possible. They completed the project within 5 weeks as promised, meeting my hard deadline. There were no surprises with the cost and in fact, I even went under the estimate. How often can you say that about a kitchen remodeling project?
Sam in the office was genuine and responded to every question I had from scheduling to the mechanics of payment. Unlike with other companies I contacted, I didn't feel like my job was too minor or not worth their time. Luke came out to do the estimate and did a great job being patient and answering all of my questions as well as arriving exactly on time. He was very up front and honest about the work and the length of time he felt might be needed. We had a pretty firm budget in mind since this wasn't a planned renovation but he managed to explain why each item needed to be done. The estimate was very reasonable (and very close to our original budget) plus they were able to fit our job in earlier than we expected. Everything was set, and a suggestion from Luke saved us some money when we were trying to get a (reasonably priced) tile that somewhat matched our vintage 1920's subway tile from the other two walls.
We were able to quickly schedule an overview with Bill (project manager) and Marek (project foreman) - both amazing. They also managed to save our vintage double-apron tub which would have been hard to replace on a budget. They had wonderful suggestions, including building a shower niche that I adore. I can't say enough about the work that was done - they were even able to work with me when my chosen tile didn't come in the right sized bull-nose and replicate the pattern on the other two walls. Everything was easily coordinated with the condo building manager when the water needed to be shut off for plumbing work. Marek and Bill came right on time the day work began and I had no problem leaving everything in Marek's hands. The project ran on time which was very important since, with only one bathroom in our condo and four of us, we had moved out during the work period. I might have even done a happy dance when I first saw the results - after years of living with old cracked tile and problematic, falling out soap dishes, it was such a great moment to see the completed work.
I had no problems whatsoever and was happy to report to my amazed family and friends that the project ran on time, on budget, and with no negative experiences. That had everything to do with the people that make up this company. I highly recommend Neighborhood Remodelers to anyone and everyone - they will treat you right and the results will be wonderful.
This was a huge job but Luke, Mick (our project manager), Jill (our designer), and Erick (our foreman) were amazing from start
to finish. Everyone at NR was so great at communicating with us and making sure we were getting exactly what we wanted. The planning phase with Jill was a ton of fun and everything that we designed with her came out exactly how we envisioned it. Mick was in constant contact with us throughout the demolition and remodeling process. We were actually out of the country at the beginning of the demolition but Mick sent us pictures so we could see the progress. It was always reassuring to get updates whenever something was happening, since we were not on site during most of this process. When the ?finishing? work was being done, Mick and Erick made sure that we saw everything in person so that we could make adjustments or approve of all of the work being completed. And, if anything ever needed to be changed, Erick and his team were always willing
to do whatever we asked of them. Mick followed up even weeks after the job was ?done? to make sure that everything was up to our expectations and when something needed to be fixed they came back out to fix it.
We had planned for the entire remodeling process to take about 3 months. It did end up being a few weeks longer than that and we had to move in before the house was completely ready, although most of the time at the start of the project was held up by a delay in the permit process with the city. We also had a lot of additional work that we needed to do mostly because the house was built in 1950s (such as electrical and plumbing upgrades). In hindsight, the one thing I wish we had done was plan for more of these contingencies at the outset. Since we worked with a construction loan, it would have been much easier on us to get that all in the loan budget instead of coming up with more money out-of-pocket. However, Kerin in the office was awesome in coordinating everything on the payment side and making sure the bank got everything they needed to fund all of the work being done.
So despite a few minor hiccups along the way (getting delayed by the city?s water department, mostly), it was all worth it in the end. We have our dream house and it?s completely our design! We recommend Neighborhood Remodelers to all of our family and friends who are looking to update or renovate, and we will definitely call them first with any projects that come up in the future.
This is actually the second time we've used Neighborhood Remodelers. The first was to gut the bathroom for a complete remodel along with updating the kitchen--new counters, island base, tile back splash, sinks, faucets, etc. Both turned out beautiful, which is why I called them again. This should be a testament to the quality of their work.
1. You receive a detailed contract, with a list of all tasks to be performed and who will be responsible for what. I always read it carefully and asked about any items that I may not understand. They are more than happy to discuss with you.
2. Both jobs started and finished on time. They are very prompt--if they say they will start at 8:30 each day, they do. If they stop to pick up some parts and will arrive later or need to change a schedule, you will get a call.
3. A project manager is assigned to each remodel, who you can call at any time with questions or concerns. There is continuity--for example, our project manager for both remodels was the same person. He was great to work with, especially since I was working full time during the first project, and with all of us on different schedules things can get complicated. I had everyone's phone number provided to me.
4. There is also a designer on staff who helped me with the bathroom--she helped with the entire layout and the custom vanity--it turned out perfect!
5.They also provide you with a list of suppliers in your area, when looking for fixtures, tile, etc., which I found helpful.
6. The gentlemen who did all the work (which is an art) were very professional and I enjoyed working with them. During the messy parts of the construction, they hung plastic tarps to keep dust at a minimum, and left the work areas very neat at the end of the day.
The quote was not the cheapest we received but we really liked the way they NR themselves; came across as very professional, a standard they maintained well throughout the project.
Abbey make a great difference before we got started; listening to our ideas and guiding us with some timely suggestions.
The village threw us a few curve balls on length of time to get the permit and other petty requirements but Bill and Art had
some resolutions pretty quickly, which allowed us to continue to move forward.
If we had a complaint, and it is not major, it is sometimes we were not sure what was going to be happening day to day. That said Bill was always very quick to get back to us with accurate information.
The work is completed to a very high standard across the board and our basement is now a really great living space.
Everyone involved was professional and easy to work with. A great company to work with, and I would recommend them.
