Description of Work: Installation of exotic hardwood flooring from Brazil. The job required cleats and a special base underneath so the job would not have to be re-worked years later. All in all he installed about 2,000 square feet of hardwood goncalo alves wood which we imported. He used cleats for the install as opposed to traditional staples and months later we still cannot believe the quality of his work and craftsmanship.

Description of Work: We are rehabbing a ranch home that was in need of some serious TLC. The house had shag rug and tile throughout. Our contractors removed the shag and tile right down to the subfloor. Originally I was going to have my contractors put the floor in but I had 1,400 feet of exotic Brazilian Tigerwood - 4" wide and it cost me an arm and a leg. I looked at the new floor as adding value to the home so I decided to disappoint my general contactor and look for a flooring specialist. I talked with four different flooring professionals seeking to assess their skill levels, read their reviews and asked a few questions about their experience with exotic wood. Most of them knew nothing about exotic woods and told me they could do it for $1.50 per square foot. The group that sold me the flooring talked sense into me and told me to go with a professional - insist on 18 gage cleats only - flooring guys hate to use cleats because it takes longer and they usually want to get in and get out. Most flooring guys were like, why do you need cleats? Or, you don't need cleats or even better yet what are cleats. With hardwood, all Joseph uses are cleats. Joseph told me straight out what it would take as well as the things I had to think hard about considering when installing the floor for the long term. Cleats require extra labor and need the right pressure setting to install them properly. He also took the time to place cleats 6 inches apart on each plank. That takes time and results in a superior floor installation. Joseph got down to business and the work he has done is a true work of art. He is a craftsman and proud of his work. Right down to the heating vents, everything is perfect. My wife is a tough cookie and she was even gushing about the quality of his work, the pride he takes, and his overall demeanor. He will treat your house as if it's his own and leave it spotless each day. He exceeded all expectations.

Description of Work: I sought out JN Hardwood as a potential contractor for refinishing a hard wood floor in a house that I was rehabbing. Joseph, the owner, was on time for our first meeting, and was experienced enough to quickly assess the condition of the existing floor. Once it was determined that the existing floor was beyond repair, I decided to replace some of it and carpet the rest. Joseph provided me with pricing options so that I could make my decision as to how much to replace and how much to carpet. Once we settled on a scope of work, JN performed the job in a timely and professional manner.

Description of Work: Replace entire first floor surfaces with wood floor. Approximately 1,800 square feet of floor including carpet, tile on wood and ceramic tile on cement needed to be removed resulting in 4,300 pounds of debris in the dumpster. Floors from room to room varied + or - 2" requiring leveling and building up surface. Wood floors were installed, sanded, sanded to raise grain, stained and sealed with 2 coats of Glista.

Description of Work: During an almost 3 year period we renovated a very large, historically listed home in Evanston. Thus I worked with Joseph for a very long time. Despite the ginormous size of the house, Joseph worked alone and most of the time on his hands and knees. He worked after hours and on weekends when the other workmen weren't around. Joseph does not know the word "impossible". For example, the kitchen had previously been renovated and the owners had decided on maple floors for the kitchen...not only did it resemble a bowling alley but was totally out of sync with the rest of the home. Architect and contractors agreed it couldn't be done...only Joseph, with a twinkle in his eye said "I do for you, no worry", and he did and it's beautiful. Actually he did all the wood in the house either matching it or restoring it. He never missed a day, never offered excuses he just worked like the artisan that he is. He is a craftsman from the old school and his work reflects his experience and the pride he takes in a job well done. I do not know the cost because it was part of a contract that included the whole job.
