 + -1 moreI was very pleased with the overall quality of the job and how careful Craig was when doing the work in my home. He had a wide variety of both paint and then replacement doors to select from, was very knowledgeable about what it would take to get it done and was easy to reach via email. Overall very easy to work with and someone I would recommend to others. I had seen his work at a friends house where he re-did the entire kitchen and was impressed with the attention to detail and the overall finished look of the work so decided to contact him about my job. He was very helpful in weighting the pros/cons of just refinishing/staining the existing cabinet vs the small incremental cost of getting new doors for a different look so it was easy to make the final selection of going with replacement doors. The replacement doors and hinges were very good quality and now that it is all finished it looks like a brand new vanity, at a fraction of what it would have cost me to do a total replacement. He was also very careful when working in my home (taking shoes off etc) and did an excellent job of cleaning up when done.
Description of Work: I had two bathroom vanities redone. The smaller guest bathroom was repainted and the double vanity in the master was refaced with new doors and trimmed.

 + 0 moreCraig is been the best I have ever hired. He is a true craftsman with an eye for detail and creative solutions. My 1926 Oak Park home has a good-sized kitchen that dated to 1981 with high-quality Amish cabinets plus a large pantry area with a built-in "wife's" desk. There was no reason to replace the maple cabinet boxes, but the veneers had cracked and peeled -- the brown was out-dated and dark. In addition to new doors, painting the boxes, and 40 pulls, Craig suggested replacing the desk, which no one used as a desk anyway, with a full-sized 4 drawer double cabinet. He also added 4 slide-outs to a corner with lots of dead space, 2 spice racks to the doors beside the store, an additional pullout by the stove, a lazy susan to a corner cabinet, and new full extension glide rails to all the drawers. He slightly mismeasured the heights of a stack of four drawers, and though I might not have noticed since he installed them in a 2:1:2 gap pattern, he was dissatisfied, believing they should be regularly spaced, and reordered 3 of them to accomplish (and a door front that was was dented during shipping). He asked me to hold back a few hundred dollars from the balance settlement until the work was completed. Craig came back and finished the job about a month later at a time that worked for us both, and he was right, the replaced drawer fronts look even better. Throughout, it's clear that Craig is an expert, and my wife and I have enjoyed working with him; we've emailed and spoken frequently, and he's asked my thoughts on at least 2 permanent install detail choices before moving ahead with the work. Although he's not inexpensive, I believe am getting my money's worth: he was 40% less than what Home Depot quoted me, which included silly extra work, such as adding plywood underneath the upper cabinets. Craig has repeatedly offered to return if I notice anything, or to touch up finishes in the future as needed.

 + -1 moreAbsolutely excellent. Craig is one of those people who takes complete pride of ownership. He was extremely responsive, highly professional and his work is outstanding. We priced a few other contractors and Craig was the most expensive, but he was worth every dime. He is a person who does what he says he is going to do. Both my husband and I work from home and he was completely unobtrusive, trustworthy and likable. I could not recommend Craig highly enough.

 + -1 moreFrom start to finish Craig was a class act. We were selling our home and wanted to fix some of the cabinet doors and drawers that had chipped or didn't open/close correctly. Our home was a foreclosure and it had been neglected for years and the kitchen cabinets were no exception. Craig came in and gave us an estimate... and once the work got started he figured out a way to accomplish the goal with less time and as a result, he lowered the price. The cabinet doors matched the existing ones almost identically and he got the color spot on. I was very impressed that he was able tto order and install everything in just a few short weeks. I would highly recommend.
Description of Work: Replaced about 10 door and drawer fronts for older laminate cabinets and installed a cabinet to hold our trash can where a trash compactor was previously.

Description of Work: In 2010 Craig had restored our cabinets in a bathroom & the kitchen in our old home. I asked him to do the same with the 40 year old cabinets in the townhouse we were moving into. He explained & also showed me why it would just not be practical to work with the old cabinets which were in poor condition. Craig redesigned a MUCH improved layout of; drawers, cabinets & lazy suzan corner cabinets. He had the custom designed new cabinets made in the Midwest & the quality is beautiful! We are so pleased! A carpenter we were already working with installed the cabinets (or Craig would have) and Craig did the finish work.

 + -1 moreMy townhome was built in 2002, and I always hated the kitchen cabinets that came with my home. The kitchen layout was great, and the cabinets themselves were quality, but I didn't like the traditional look of them. My taste runs very modern. I decided that after over 10 years, that refacing them was best option for a "new" kitchen" I contacted Craig based on the reviews here. I also contacted another cabinet refacing company that had good reviews as well. Craig's quote was much lower than the other companies, and his reviews were a bit better. I went with Craig and he was very easy to deal with. I told him exactly the look I was going for (I didn't even show him pictures, just told him!), and he nailed it. The quality of his communication and work are unparalleled. When I came home after he finished, my jaw dropped. It was like walking in to a brand new home. Without hesitation, I would recommend Unhinged. Craig is a true craftsman.

 + -1 moreCraig responded to my initial email within 24 hours and my in home appointment took place within 1 week. He arrived on time and prepared for our appointment with sample boards of paint finishes and cabinet door styles. I chose a new cabinet door style and measurements were taken. At the same appointment, Craig was able to provide me with the exact cost of the new doors, as well as his cost for the refinishing our exhisting cabinet boxes. Once Craig received the cabinet doors, we scheduled a 4 day block of time for the on-site painting (the new doors were delivered to and painted at Craig's workshop). The on-site work began on time, and was completed 1 day early. Craig always arrived to my home on time and worked diligently throughout the day. At the completion of my project, Craig actually swept my floor, while on his hands and knees, making certain nothing was overlooked. I couldn't be more pleased with the amazing work Craig did. Our cabinet boxes and doors were refinished flawlessly. The results are everything I could have hoped for. Craig is a true professional who takes pride in his craftsmanship. I have already recommended him to family and friends and would not hesitate to hire him again.

 + 0 moreHaving seen positive reviews on AL of Craig Friese / Unhinged's work, I got in touch with him in late May. I telephoned some of his references (enthusiastic), and he came by to plan the project a couple of times. I could tell right away he was knowledgeable and thorough. I ended up having him work alone in the house while I was out working, and he was completely trustworthy doing so. This project was to be a surprise for my wife (my friends tell me that was an insanely gutsy move), so I wanted to schedule the work while she was out of the country. Craig worked with me on that, and nailed his completion time estimate perfectly. Craig has sources of quality materials -- I know just enough about wood and woodworking to see that the doors he brought in are high quality. He also knows hinges and hardware, which can make a huge difference in durability and feel. We had him back a couple times (both my wife and my mother-in-law like him a lot, too) because my wife wanted to try a door variation, and to have him install some in-cabinet drawers. This again was impressively well-done. Price: I didn't try negotiating price or shopping the job around -- he was clearly charging a reasonable rate and I was more interested in a quality job with no aggravation than I was in saving a few hundred dollars. Viewing this refacing this project as a replacement for a tremendously expensive full kitchen renovation made it a bargain in any case. One final thing that really made working with Craig a pleasure is how responsive he is to email -- I prefer email, especially with contractors, because then I have a record of who said what and when. So many contractors don't use email, use it sporadically or poorly, or otherwise communicate poorly, that he really stood out.

 + -1 moreCraig repainted all my old oak cabinets with the top cabinets painted white and four doors had glass inserted in them that did not previously exist. The bottom cabinets were painter a dark grey and all new pulls and hidden door hinges were installed. My kitchen went from the 1990's to modern 2013. I love the look and Craig was great to work with. He was vey pleasant and helpful and always cleaned up after each day. I would definetly use him again and would recommend him to friends and family.

When he arrived at the door to start the job, he brought drop cloths with him and rolled them out to the kitchen area -- our hardwood floors were well protected.  + -1 moreWe first contacted Craig in late July, based on great recommendations from Angie's list. He came out the following week with samples of wood finishes, etc and we were able to come up with a plan quite quickly. Due to scheduling (our issue more than his) we didn't get the work done until October. Craig works alone, which does require more time--total was 6 days--but it's definitely worth it.
Description of Work: Craig installed new cabinet doors and drawer fronts on entire kitchen--veneer on sides, etc plus beautiful molding by the ceiling. In addition to being a meticulous craftsman, Craig offered suggestions and solutions that we hadn't thought of which made the whole outcome just beautiful.

 + -1 moreStarted process with Craig in August with phone call and then email with photos of current kitchen cabinets. He gave me a ballpark estimate via email. Within my price range, so made an appointment for him to come to my home (8/25/12) with samples, take measurements, etc. Then, dependent upon product I had selected, gave me a firm estimate -- which was totally in line with previous estimate. Discussed a start date and somewhat disappointed that he couldn't do until middle/late October. However, not in a rush and wanted other work -- wallpaper removal, painting and tile -- done before cabinets. As it turned out, tile work not finished until 10/24 so Craig starting on 10/29 worked out great. Craig was courteous, on time and totally professional during the four days he worked in my home. Cleaned up at the end of each day...and did an amazing clean-up at the end of the job, including vacuuming inside of all cabinets/drawers. (Always nice when a trades person treats you and your home with respect.) I am totally happy with finished product. Craig took my old, tired, very ornate brown oak cabinets (installed by previous home owner) to a very up-to-date clean looking product -- light maple, double shaker-style cabinets with sleek new stainless steel pulls/handles and European hinges. What a difference! Actually makes my small kitchen appear larger. Neighbor came in the other day to help me get everything back into cabinets and couldn't believe the great change in kitchen -- because she knew what kitchen used to look like. If you need something done right now, don't think Craig is your man. But, Unhinged, Inc. is definitely worth waiting for -- professional and courteous -- with the delivery of a great end product!

 + -1 moreWe have a very small, older kitchen that needed updating and we needed new appliances. The new appliances are much larger than they were in the "80's when we bought our refrigerator, etc. We could not figure out how to fit the new applicances in our kitchen without doing a major rehab (knocking down walls, etc), we were ona budget, so we put off doing anything at all for years. Finally, I came up with a plan to squeeze the applicances in the existing kitchen, but we needed an inch more space for a new stove, and could not figure out what to do. After consulting with a kitchen designer and a specialty refacer, we still did not have a solution within our budget, so in desparation I decided to have thecabinets painted, and to buy a smaller, apartment size stove. We had 2 estimates, one of which was Craig's. Craig was not the cheapest, but there was no comparison between him and the other person. Craig was professional, matter of fact, knowlegable, and most importantly, made suggestions about how to fit in a full sized stove, in a way that we had not known was possible. The minute I met him I had confidence in his abilities. ( He kept saying he is not an interior designer, but he did miracles for our kitchen configuration). I am a big procrastinator and also have a hard time making up my mind, so the project took a bit longer from start to finish. Craig is a delight to work with and was very patient as I went back and forth, not making decisions in a timely fashion. Craig did a great job. He paints beautifully. I can't tell that the cabinets and doors were not painted in the factory. After the work was finished I found some minor flaws that were barely visible. Craig could have implied that I was being too picky, but he fixed what bothered me without any problem. Craig is extremely easy to work with and was a pleasure to have working in my home. Again, he deserves a metal for his patience.
Description of Work: We needed a budget kitchen update and decided to have our wooden cabinets painted., among other changes. The cabinets were in pretty good shape, but they were greasy and dirty, with old fashioned hinges. Following Craig's suggestion, we kept some of our old cabinet boxes, and Craig ordered new doors, and some smaller cabinets to accommodate our new kitchen configuration, which Craig helped us plan, and then he painted everything. He even encouraged us to choose any color we wanted, which we did. Craig then painted and installeded the new cabinets and doors, painted the old cabinets that we were able to keep, and put in the hardware (drawer pulls and inside hinges). He also installed spacers in places that needed them which helped configure the kitchen.

 + -1 moreAs mentioned above, the work went as planned and resulted in minimal disruption to our daily lives. Much more livable than having your entire kitchen gutted and being without a kitchen for weeks or months.
Description of Work: We wanted to do a cost effective kitchen upgrade and since our cabinets were real wood and in relatively decent shape and we liked the current layout of our kitchen, we considered refinishing the cabinets as opposed to replacing or refacing them. Since Unhinged offered this servcie we had Craig come out and talk to us about his services and give us a quote. From his description, our kitchen cabinets would be refinished to look like they were new, which was exactly what we were looking for. In late June we hired Craig to do this work. In July Craig came out and removed the door fronts and drawers. These were refinished off site and other than having to remove the contents from the drawers, our kitchen remained intake and was functional during the time he was doing the refinishing work which was a great plus about this project. We chose to keep the original cabinet color but opted to replace the hardware which require Craig to do some restoration to the door and drawer fronts to accomodate different screw placement. After a few weeks he returned with the refinished doors and drawers and spent two days restoring the cabinet boxes and installing the doors and drawers. Craig has recommened invisible hinges which we did and this makes the cabinets look so much better than they were before. We also updated the hardware to match the existing applicance color (nickel). Craig also replace some prefinshed quarter round molding above the cabinets with matching cove molding which added a nice finishing touch. We also had him rebuild one of the drawers as the existing one was warped. When all the work was completed the cabinets looked terrific. We had also had new granite counter tops installed by another company and the completed kitchen looks fantastic. We are so pleased to have gone this route. I would highly recommend that anyone with decent wood cabinets who likes their current kithcen layout that you give this option consideration.
