Mark was easy to work with. He explained the schedule and the work he was expecting to do. I was a little disappointed with the finish itself, I had expected it to be more smooth but there is definitely some graininess - especially on vertical faces.
Description of Work: Updated the surface colors in three bathrooms. I indicated I would not hire them again, not because I wouldn't recommend them...but because this was intended to be a cost effective alternative to a complete bathroom remodel. When the time comes, I will replace the current tubs, showers and sinks simply due to the age of the products.

Guys we're nice, punctual and professional. Tubs looked like new when finished. One tub has had a pair of barely noticeable spots of finish flake off after a few weeks despite following all instructions regarding care and cleaning. Not a big issue, but if finish continues to degrade, we'll call in for a touch up. Price seemed resonable compared to other quotes we received.

Started off fine but ended badly. I researched this process pretty thorough still with some speculation as I worked in refinishing in the past. I knew it was not going to be as perfect as new, we are not in a controlled environment. they came out and performed their service. I noticed that the caulk was not removed and was refinished over. I didn't say anything right away as to go back and check there process to see if I had made a mistake in thinking it was suppose to be done. in the first paragraph of their refinishing process it clearly states that all caulk is meticulously removed. I went back to look over everything else to find other surfaces were not properly cleaned and refinished over. I also found that a very dry coat was applied to the surrounding edges and other surfaces of the tub. other parts were great and would of been totally satisfied with the job if the moldy caulk would have been removed and the finish consistent all the way through. I then sent an email to the president about my concerns. I then went back to clean off the dust from their sanding of the tub off of my new bedroom hardwood floor. This should of not happened either, but dust cleans up. As I kept cleaning I found out they did not protect my floor as good as they claim they do. I found a chip and scratch with multiple scuff marks from the spaying equipment they had laying on it. I immediately called them up. I was not waiting for a response. I demanded action right away. left a message because no one answered. Received a call back and was asked to send pictures so I did. they were apologetic and said the tech noticed the chip and scratch when he was cleaning up but felt he didn't do it so didn't say anything. They were trying to push it off as if he couldn't do it because he put some thin plastic down and there are rubber feet on the bottom of there equipment. I said I know there are rubber feet on bottom. I have all the markings all over my floor from them. I was getting very irritated at this moment. They said they wanted to work with me and make things right. Oh, and to go back to the caulking issue fyi they said they don't remove caulk from those types of units as to not do damage to the walls. I would of removed it myself if I was told that before the process was done. It is not listed anywhere that they don't do this. Well lets just jump to today 12/7/2016. Finally had the president out to look at the problems. It didn't talk 2 minutes for this to go bad. I was told the job is acceptable after showing the stuff that was sprayed over. I asked him to leave and a judge can deem what is acceptable. He said again he wanted to work with me. This went into a refinishing bickering war which he didn't have a leg to stand on. All he could come back with is a smile and silence. Maybe you can get over on someone who doesn't know better but when u get someone who has a background in this material then its a different story. One of my last questions was would you accept this in your own home. Again no answer just a big old smile. Well it will be interesting to see what happens. Just be leery if you decide to use this company. I don't want to see someone else spend their hard earned money and not have a positive out come. I will be contacting the BBB next. The only thing I have been offered to this point is to touch up the areas where the caulk was. let me inform you this cant be done without doing the whole thing because you will have a whole dry spot going around the area and will look terrible.

Response from The Surface Doctors
Your one piece tub/shower unit had a fine bead of caulk around it, and was up against drywall. Attempting to remove it may have caused damage to the drywall. We do remove necessary caulk, but do not want to cause damage to surrounding fixtures by removing it. In some cases, the caulk can be sound enough to run a fresh bead right over it. The technician has to assess each case and apply the best judgment. The scratch in the floor may have been inadvertently caused by the technician. We did have protection over that area, but damaged may have occurred. We do accept that. We do respond to all issues quickly, and try to find a solution that is mutually acceptable. In the end, this matter was resolved out of court with a mutual agreement to refund your money in full, which we did. We are very sorry you did not have a positive experience with our company.

I had my bathroom re-coat 8 year ago now I am remodeling the bathroom At first we agreed on re-coat the area around the vanity and bathtub for $475 ( the 3 side walls is still very good) but the technician came and told me that there would be a different between new and old color. So I decided to do the whole bathroom for $1025. At first look he did a very UGLY job, he tried to correct them but it still UNACCEPTIBLE. My old shiny walls are rough, not shiny and there are several spots of old color. The vanity area and bathtub are even worse. I do not want to show picture because the new technician (I requested new one) came to correct the work a week later. After long talk he re-coated bathtub, vanity area and some parts of the wall AS NEEDED. he did very good job on his part, the area that he did are shiny and smooth. So it looks OK white but now I have both good smooth and shiny area mixed with bad rough and not shiny walls (he told me that he would do the whole wall but apparently he did not). The second technician asked me how many times I want him to spray my bathroom, my simple answer is just make it right one time!

We are very sorry you had an unpleasant experience with our company. After prepping and spraying the surfaces, it became apparent that the grout was thin in many areas. Occasionally with old tile, it can be difficult to tell if the grout will look thin, or show tiny hairline cracks, until we spray the coating over the surface. Once the coating was applied, fine hairline cracks in the grout became much more apparent with the new white coating. We did explain that these areas should be re-grouted with a non-sanded grout, and that we would be happy to come back out and re-spray these areas for you for no charge. We did explain that we do not re-grout tile. I believe there was a misunderstanding between you and the first technician, because he did explain the issues with the old grout, but you told him to caulk the grouted areas instead. He told you that caulking these areas was not recommended and would not yield acceptable results. After much debate, he reluctantly caulked the areas and the results did not turn out well, as we originally anticipated. The first technician does do excellent work, but he did have some issues with the way the coating was spraying that day. It could have been the heat or humidity that day, but the results were not what we typically produce. We are dealing with a number of variables when it comes to mixed coatings reacting to temperatures, humidity and a number of other factors. After it was done, there was nothing we could do about the results until the coatings fully cured. We would have to come back to make corrections. If we try to touch up or correct areas when the coatings are still fresh and wet, we would have made the situation worse. It is best to come back to re-spray or touch up on a different day. You requested a different technician to make the corrections. That was not a problem. The second technician came out, went over the areas of concern with you and corrected what was deemed as unsatisfactory. Afterwards, he had you look at everything. You told him everything looked good and you were happy and approved the final results. You tipped him $20, which was unexpected. Once again, we are very sorry your experience with our company was unpleasant.

SO best to write this review while the RAGE is fresh on my mind... I had an appointment with Gunner and the The Surface Doctors scheduled for today between 12-4pm. The appointment was for a chip repair in a rental unit of mine. The tech and I are in contact by phone around noon and we agree on meeting over at the unit at 2pm. I arrive at my rental unit at 145pm and as I am parking in a METERED STREET SPACE I get a call from the tech saying that he is delayed at his previous job and he will arrive instead at 3pm. Oh well... ok.. i just pull out my phone and begin the waiting game. At 250pm he calls and says he is 15-20 mins away. Of COURSE... this becomes 335 by the time he actually arrives at the address. I get yet ANOTHER call from the tech guy saying that the building has no service parking. I tell him yes.. this is CHICAGO and unfortunately free parking spaces have gone the way of the dinosaur. There ARE however TONS OF METERED spaces. I look outside the window of my building and can visually see 4-5 empty metered street parking spaces in front of the building. The tech sounds annoyed and says he will continue to "look for parking"??? I mention for MULTIPLE time effect... "park in one of the metered spaces!!!" I will pay for the d*** meter... i don't care.. I have already taken off from work to meet this "technician". This is where it gets good... after 10 minutes the technician STOPS RESPONDING TO HIS CELL PHONE and i get a call from Gunner at the main office. He tells me that the "Technician" decided to LEAVE because he couldnt find parking?????????? WTH??? THIS IS CHICAGO... if you are going to do business WITHIN city limits.. EXPECT TO HAVE TO PAY STREET PARKING!! this isnt like the suburbs... CHARGE customers for the parking expense if you like or not.. that is your choice.... but dont FREAKING STAND THEM UP AFTER WAITING ALL DAY just because you cant find a free parking space and then proceed to ignore phone calls???? Gunner could have sounded ANY MORE disinterested with the fact that his "technician" blew off an appointment and then drove away without a word. His response was merely "It's been a crazy day... yea i guess he shouldnt have left" STAY AWAY FROM THE SURFACE DOCTORS... There are PLENTY OF OTHER REPUTABLE businesses on ANGIES List that deserve your time and hard earned money!!
Description of Work: I sent pictures of the damage to my tub and scheduled an appointment for today to repair a fiberglass tub that has a chip in it.... The provider made the appointment and after 4 hours and a dozen phone calls proceeded to BLOW OFF THE APPOINTMENT claiming that they could not find parking?????

We are very sorry for your experience today. This is definitely not usual protocol for any of our technicians. We do a lot of work in the city and parking issues have never been a problem in the past. He was dealing with some personal issues today and we are very sorry it affected the appointment we had scheduled. Unfortunately, we did not have another technician in the area that could take over the repair at the time. We pride ourselves on the positive reviews we have acquired over the years, and are very disappointed that things turned out the way they did today. We understand your frustration and are very sorry.

Gunnar took time to chat with me about the potential tub refinishinig project. He really helped me understand the process, the materials and the tasks that needed to be done. It was a great conversation. I was able to send pictures via email, and he was able to provide a quote that way - in a very timely fashion. The other provider was slightly less expensive, but overall it was a toss up on the work, and the conversation was very appreciated.

We have a VERY old bathtub in our house that was slowly chipping itself away. It was actually pretty gross to the point where we could not bathe and it just looked gross even to shower in. Nick was our service guy. He arrived on time and got right to work. He was very courteous, explained that he would need to use various power outlets to avoid shorting our fuses and made sure he knew which rooms were on/off limits for this purpose. Further, I work from home and had meeting scheduled through the course of the day while he was here. He did everything he could to keep the noise down, let me know when there was going to be unavoidable noise, and required very little of my attention through the day, which was great. I honestly did not think our tub could be restored to the condition it's in right now. We had such deep chips that I was sure they would still be visible and they are NOT. It looks like a brand new tub. Nick did a fabulous job and I would not hesitate to bring him back if we needed more work done.

Kitchen countertops were sprayed with faux stone color, they were a white corian ... Turned out fine , no issues Hall laminte vanity top sprayed with faux stone color ... Turned out fine, no issues. Master bath laminate vanity top sprayed with faux stone color ... After a couple of months started to peel. They did come to respray, not the best job. Master bath sink was refinished ... the first time it was sprayed twice, since color was not the same as color of bathtub close by. After a few months it started pitting and chipping around the drain and faucet area. Called again to respray. Even took out the faucet and drain (my cost) they don't do that. Third respray ... a few months later, same issue. They sent a different individual from the previous two times. He couldn't get the color right and his sprayer was clogging up. A two hour job ended up being a 6 hour job. Our final issue occured with the shower that was refinished. About six months after the job, started peeling and pitting around the drain area. I did call and they said they would come over to take care of respraying again. I really didn't want to go through the mess again! Eventhough they put plastic sheeting up, they leave a lot of areas open and the very fine spray mist gets everywhere!! After many showers, the finish started peeling away and I was able to peel the whole finish off with a putty knife. I did talk to the owner Gunnar, and he apologized for the shower, but not once in this whole process did he come out himself, to respray or just take a look to see why there was a reaccuring issue in our Master bath!! There was never any offer to refund the price of the shower $225.00 or at least a partial refund. Be very careful when using this company ... ask for references, make sure the surfaces you want sprayed can be done and will last.

I called and booked the apointment, described the situation with the tub and the condition it was in. I got a quote, and booked the appointment. It was very straightforward.
Description of Work: Resurfaced a very old bathtub from the 1960's. It was originally blue, with ground in dirt, very drab. It is now stunningly beautiful - white, shining, inviting. And the best part - aside from not having to tear it out at big expense - is that I have the tub in a graceful style and shape that is not as common today, but like it is brand new! I was terrifically pleased, and decided that ANY time I move to a house with a used tub, to have this company come take care of it. It was very professionally handled.

I called and left a message and received a call back the next day. I described the chip and they said they could fix it and quoted the $175.00 price. We scheduled a time a couple weeks later. He came out on time, fixed the chip in under an hour and it looks beautiful. Right now, the patch is a little shinier (same color white though) than the rest of the tub but he assured me that with normal use and cleaning, it would eventually become just like the rest of the tub (maybe a couple weeks). This tub is 17 years old! Frankly, it looks great, even if one little spot is a bit shinier forever. I feel like I just saved almost $2000 and it was totally painless.
Description of Work: I dropped a caulking gun off the top of a ladder in my bathroom. It chipped a deep 1 1/2 by 2 inch piece out of the top edge of my porcelain cast iron tub. We just wanted to repair the chip if at all possible. If that wasn't possible, we would be removing the tub and tile work around the tub and replacing it all at a cost of about $2000.00.
