While sub-contractors were highly professional, quality workmanship, pleasant and tidy, this contractor failed to complete the job in a timely manner, taking 5 times! longer than should have. Left sawdust, plaster dust, protective paper after construction and drywalling for homeowner to clean up. Didn't followup thoroughly nor promptly. Disappeared for months at a time. No show multiple times. Missed final inspection. Failed final inspections. Didn't keep track of punchlist items. Started construction w/o permit. Managing the GC requires too much extra work by homeowner.

Start date of the project was September 1, 2011, with a promised completion date of November 18, 2011, so that we could host a family Thanksgiving dinner in our new kitchen. The work was still not completed more than three months past the promised date. We made verbal agreements to extend the completion of the work several times. While the quality of the work performed was excellent, communication with the firm's owner left much to be desired. Several promised completion dates were not kept. Ultimately, and with only a small amount of work left to complete, we terminated our arrangement with Himelick and hired a different company to complete the work--which took less than a day to complete. Further reflecting on this experience two years later, the quality craftsmanship has held up remarkably well. The contractor even came and did adjustments on a pocket door they installed at no charge. This, despite my poor to lukewarm reviews to that point. I still have issues with punctuality and responsiveness, but the quality of the work and the price were good to excellent. I now have softened my view on this experience and not only would recommend the contractor, I would even use them again--with more realistic expectations on my part. Renovation and remodeling is not for the faint of heart. There are sacrifices built in and in our case, having this work done during the holiday season most likely added to our stress. If we had it to do over again, I would have chosen a different time of year.
Description of Work: We hired Himelick Contracting, LLC to perform extensive remodeling on our kitchen, bathroom and family room. The work was designed by another firm and Himelick was hired as the general contractor. The project included a full range of work, including extensive plumbing and electrical work, including some extra work which was discovered during demolition. Other related work was completed that was not part of the contract, which we paid for as "extra" work outside of the original contract.
