I contacted Pete back in July to get an estimate on replacing some deck boards and staining my deck. Unlike some people I dealt with, Pete was very good at returning phone calls, etc. anyway I gave Pete the job. When he came to do the job, he discovered that my deck boards, being that my deck was rather old, were not as thick as the boards available today. After some thought, I decided to replace all the boards, naturally this increased the cost of the job. Due to weather conditions this summer, rain and heat, plus my traveling, the job stretched out over a greater time frame than originally planned. However, the weather broke and Pete was able to come and stain the deck on September 15th. The job turned out very well, and I'm more than satisfied.
Description of Work: Repaired deck, sanded railings, power washed deck and railings and stained all.

Peter gave us a very reasonable estimate and had some excellent design suggestions which went far beyond a simple rebuild. We liked that he was able to repurpose some of the uprights which were still i good condition, which helped control costs. Despite the area's wettest June on record, he worked when he could and finished the job when promised. Peter's a friendly, professional guy who works hard and knows his stuff. We plan to use him for all future construction needs. Highly recommended!
Description of Work: Our existing deck was a shambles, with rotting floorboards and joists. We had the entire 2-level deck demolished & rebuilt using the same footprint. The resulting deck that Peter built is sturdy, beautiful, and like having a new addition on the house.

It went great! Pete was able to come by after the critter guy got rid of the raccoons and gave us an estimate on the stair job. He handled everything, including permitting with the Village and got the work turned around very quickly. We're really happy with the quality of work he did and the price was reasonable. I would gladly recommend Brown Dog Construction to anyone, and we're already working with him on some other projects around the house we've put off for too long.
Description of Work: We had some raccoons move in under our porch, and in order to extract them, the critter guy had to cut through the stairs. Underneath, they had some rotten wood and were in pretty bad shape so we had them completely rebuilt by Pete at Brown Dog. He rebuilt the porch steps, painted them and the porch deck and installed a hand-rail.

The owner of the company, Pete, was thorough in his work/service. Went to my home to inspect and provided a detailed estimate of work he recommended should be repaired before placing on the market. Because he prepare homes often for sell, he could recommend what really should be taken care of and what not to spend time or money fixing. Because I was doing this long distance, Pete kept my realtors informed on daily progress and sent me pictures of his work. He completed the work within the schedule he proposed and worked within the agreed budget. There were other items that were discovered later that needed fixing and Pete returned to do the work in a timely fashion. He was recommended to me by a roofer. Pete is professional and courteous and I continue to use his service. .

We are still reviewing their bid and we don't know whether we're going to go with them or not. They gave a very detailed description of the work they're going to do and so that's nice. So we're still looking at their bid and deciding which one to go with. They were very responsive and very punctual.

Brown Dog were wonderful. They get an A++++. I got their services in probably August or September. They initially came just to look over my deck and then they noticed that there was a problem with my gutters and so they ended up fixing all the gutters and they ended up doing a major job in my basement and then we ended up hiring them to paint later on and they did a wonderful job on that too. They do quite a few things. The basement ended up being a real big deal because there was some real serious work needed. Overall, they did a wonderful job. The owner was real nice and pleasant and very very honest and does very best work. They are right in the neighborhood.

Description of Work: We recently bought a new house, knowing that there was a lot of exterior work to be done. The roof needed to be replaced and the siding needed to be addressed. After searching on Angie's List and elsewhere, we received multiple bids. Pete's was not the lowest, but he was the most careful, thoughtful and the one that we thought would be most dedicated to the job. Our experience was unparallelled. Starting with responsiveness, Pete always answers his phone or got right back to us. He was willing to come back over to our house at 8pm when we got home to talk things over, look at the exterior, fix problems, or move on. Halfway through the project, we had unexpected flooding, unrelated to the work that Pete was doing. He immediately threw himself into fixing the problem. When it was clear that a portion of the foundation had collapsed, he covered it so that no further rain could get in. It worked perfectly. Before he did his repair, we asked what would happen if it started to rain in the night and his covering didn't hold out the water and he said, "I sleep with my phone near my bed. If you get any water in, call me immediately and I'll be right over to fix it, pump water, or do whatever needs to be done." Because his fix was so good, we never had to take him up on it, but if we had, I know he would have. He served as the general contractor for a series of projects, including fixing the roof, replacing the siding, painting the house exterior and repairing the foundation. In every case, his work was careful, meticulous and thoughtful. He does the job right the first time, each time. If something came up, he let us know right away, took pictures and sent them to us at work. In the process of getting things done, I am sure there were a number of instances that this happened, but I know of at least once where he bid a job for $400. By the time he had it done right, I'm fairly sure that the materials plus labor far exceeded $400 worth of work, but when I asked him what it would cost he said, "I told you $400, so that's the cost". I would use Brown Dog Construction again any time. I was very impressed.

It all went wonderfully. Pete is a gem. He is pleasant, friendly, and prideful of his work. He is also eager to please and very professional. The job went the length of time it was to take. He did just what we asked and more. He cleaned up every day before he left. He did such a fine job resurfacing the walls. Pete took charge of getting the matching paint for the rec room wall. The job cost just about what he estimated: more materials had to be purchased. The final clean up was so thorough that he left me nothing to do upon his departure. We had Pete and his coworker do another challenging task for us two years ago and we were most impressed with their ingenuity and earnestness. Nothing has changed. I would recommend Pete in a minute and I look forward to hiring him again in the future.
Description of Work: Two basement walls were in disrepair. They were losing paint and even had holes here and there. We wanted all of the "bad" areas removed and resurfaced. We also wanted the walls cleaned of a crusty accumulation. This necessitated cleaning, scraping, digging and chipping out parts of the walls and then using hydraulic cement and sealer. The one wall was in our rec room so it was also eventually painted. We were warned that the job may be difficult and messy and that the resurfacing may also have its challenges.

Overall extremely pleased. Nathan and Pete went above and beyond our expectations to do a quality job in a professional manner and got the job done quickly.
Description of Work: We had a garage built, roof replaced, kitchen plaster repair and repainting and are extremely satisfied. Both Nathan and Pete were very detail oriented, extremely punctual and knew what they are doing. They were also very professional and explained everything about the project from start to finish and answered all our questions and concerns. The estimate we received for the work before the contract was signed was very detailed and they had no problem adding/changing the language to meet our needs. The work was completed in record time and was very high quality. The permits were also obtained in record time with no problems. When sub-contractors were needed, Nathan and Pete arrived at the property before the subs every day to supervised the entire job. When some things needed to be fixed that were not installed to our specifications by the subs, Nathan and Pete immediately addressed the issue and the corrections were made right away without the need for us to intervene. They also always cleaned up after every day so we didn't have a mess to return home to after work. They were very courteous and easy to work with. We highly recommend them to any one needing work done on their home. If they can't do the work, they know who can and will supervise them until you get a superior result.

Very good experience. Pete was able to give me a lot of information about getting the permit, whether we needed to replace the railing to comply with code, and whether we needed a much bigger landing area leading out from the house as some neighbors had installed. His good advice helped keep the price down. Pete and Nate were finishing up the job when it unexpectedly started to rain. They quickly covered up the stairs and kept things dry. They returned first thing the next week to finish installing one more riser and also put a new coat of primer on in case the rain had damaged it at all. They did an excellent job, left things clean, and I would not hesitate to hire them again.
Description of Work: Peter and Nate put in new front and back stairs on the outside of our house. I thought the whole assembly needed to be replaced, but Pete examined it and said all I needed were new treads and risers but not the entire box. After installing the stairs, they primed them.

After my 1,500 sq foot finished basement flooded suddenly with about 6 inches of water due to a sump pump failure, I called Brown Dog Construction and they immediately came over 30 miles to our home. The owners, Nate and Pet, worked from 7pm to midnight on that Friday evening. In order to save as much of the basement and contents as possible, they moved the contents to our garage, removed the carpeting and pad, drilled holes in the baseboard for ventilation, and cut the drywall at about 2 feet high around the entire basement to stop the water from seeping up and damaging all of the walls.. They set up several fans and fixed the sump pump in case it rained anymore that night. Nate and Pete returned early Saturday morning with a dumpster and spent most of the day removing damaged contents, and trying to help us salvage as many of the contents as we could. They also removed the 6 doors (including 4 solid core French Doors) and set up more fans. Nate or Pete returned each day that week to check the progress of the drying out of the walls and wood. After they determined the entire basement was dry, they reinstalled and taped the drywall, replaced and stained the oak trim, replaced, stained and reinstalled six solid core wood doors. They were able to match the exact colors of paint and then they sealed and repainted all of the walls and ceiling. They even re-hung the pictures on the walls as they were before the flood. They helped me pick out a new sump pump, they installed it, and set up the old sump pump to work as a backup pump. They reinstalled the doors. After much searching, Nate and Pete were able to locate the exact premium carpet we had before the flood. They installed the padding and carpeting and fixed some damage to the bathroom ceramic tiles. After we approved all of their work, they brought back to the basement all of the contents that had not been damaged. They returned two large TV’s and stands that they had taken to our garage. They took away in their dumpster that contained all of the contents that were damaged. In the end, the basement looked better after the flood than it did before the flood. We have now replaced the bed, couch and chairs and many of the kids’ video games. There is no smell of water and it feels very warm and comfortable. My wife and I were very pleased with Nate and Pete’s professionalism and courtesy. I would recommend Brown Dog construction without hesitation for anyone you needs any kind of work done.

They arrived on time and I showed them the work I wanted done. They said they would have an estimate to me in two days. They e-mailed me in two days saying they were busy but that they would send an estimate the next week, which they did. Replacing two in place, prewired cieling fans, a garbage disposal and solving a problem with the hook up of water to an ice maker is work I can do myself, but was not able to find the time. $755??? I will take a day off of work and do it myself, take my family to dinner and keep the rest of the money in the bank.

Pete and his colleagues were very friendly and respectful from start to finish. They were responsive to all my concerns and questions and were happy to do everything I wanted. They always had in mind that I wanted the house to look as good as it possibly could, and they made that goal their own as well. Although the whole job took a few weeks longer than they had initially expected, I was pleased with the result--and the house sold in three weeks (a miracle in today's market)!

We originally called Pete for an estimate for repairing our garage; he looked at it and told us that it was collapsing and we really needed a new one, although he could do some makeshift repairs that could get us by for a year or so. We took his advice to get a new garage but were very impressed with his honesty and professionalism. We then asked him for an estimate for replacing some boards on our front porch and repainting. It was (at least then) a small job and Pete was swamped at a neighbor's house and we had a bit of trouble getting a written estimate from him, but I persisted and I'm glad I did. The job was to fix some poorly done work last year, and when Pete and Nate got into the job, they found a lot more that needed to be fixed. Because of his honesty about our garage, I had no qualms taking their advice and expanding the porch work to replace more boards, the steps and the stringers. The work was done efficiently (they even worked on the weekend) and professionally. While the ultimate bill was higher than the initial estimate, the scope of work was also far greater.

We are very happy with their work. The scope of the project kept changing with our new ideas and with a basement waterproofing project going on at the same time that led to even more remodeling work needed. Pete and Joe were very flexible with the changes and did fine work with the many different jobs needed: carpentry, drywalling, plumbing, electrical. They clearly explained the pluses and minuses of many different options available in the project.
Description of Work: Pete and his assistant Joe remodeled our basement rec room, laundry room, and bathroom. They removed and replaced old wood paneling, doors, trim, and drywall. They installed a new bathroom sink, toilet, and laundry sink. They installed new electric lines, switch, and light/fan in the bathroom. They replaced the vinyl tile on the stairs going to the basement. They removed an old gas line stub and reframed and re-drywalled the wall space it was in. They broke out a section of damaged ceiling so our heating contractor could repair a cold air return (a fish tank from upstairs had leaked right into it - don't ask), then re-drywalled the ceiling.
