I was able to use Andy's online service to schedule an estimate. He came on time and was able to give a reasonable estimate. We were able to schedule for the work to be done the following week. Andy and Tony did a great job. They fixed the pocket door which required the door moulding to be removed for access to the track. They patched the moulding. They also adjusted one door latch so the bathroom door would close and stay closed. They adjusted the front screen door (made of heavy wood) so that it fits within the frame properly. then I asked them if they could take a look at two vintage sconces that I had rewired. I had planned to install them myself but am glad that I did not because I had not rewired them properly. They fixed the wiring and installed. Came in right on budget.
Description of Work: Andy rehung a pocket door that had come off the track and the hardware had come off. he also adjusted two doors and installed two light fixtures.

Andy scheduled a date within my required, short time frame,he and his partner arrived on time and completed all items on my list in the estimated time, even with a couple of trips to the hardware store. Once they walked through my list, they explained everything there were going to do in detail and all of the work was completed to my satisfaction and passed my Village's re-inspection. I spoke with Andy about remodeling at my new home and will definitely keep him on the top of my list for minor repairs and for remodeling work.
Description of Work: Repairs to meet Village inspection for sale of home. Replaced water supply line to toilet, extended bathroom exhaust vent to exterior of my home, installed Carbon Monoxide detectors, replaced bare bulb lights with covered fixtures, examined all electrical outlets for proper grounding.

This was the first company I have used that was referred by Angie's List. The money I paid to join Angie's List was worth it just to find this great company. I couldn't be happier. I called Andy for an estimate, which needed to be done quickly as I had the waterproofing company coming on Feb. 9th. He got back to me quickly. The estimate seemed high but they got such good reviews on the List, and I needed things done correctly and quickly, so I hired them, and I'm glad I did. They not only did the work that was requested by PermaSeal, but made other helpful suggestions. They installed a plastic barrier with a zipper to keep dust from the upstairs and put down a protective material on our stairs. We have an older home. While they were here they also fixed a hall light fixture, broken toilet (you had to press & hold down the lever to flush the toilet), front door lock & broken refridgerator vent. They were punctual and professional. Yes, they charge $90.00/hr. but they don't mess around. They were fast and highly skilled workmen. I had a lot of work to be done and they came in under their original estimate. I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again and am getting an estimate from them to finish the basement.
Description of Work: Andy & his co-worker Tony prepared our basement for waterproofing, which was to be done by PermaSeal. PermaSeal gave us a list of things to do before they could dig around the perimeter of the basement. Andy & Tony removed 3 steps & risers, shelving units, a washer, dryer, freezer and very heavy laundry sink. They returned 4 days later and put all back in order.

Very professional from start to end. Detailed initial scope of work and estimate. Andy took great care of the surrounding house environment ( plastic drop cloths, air handling, general cleanup) throughout the project. Quality of trim and drywall work was superior.

I found them on Angie’s list. He said they would not be able to do the work. They recommended somebody else. They were good. They came over pretty fast. They were trustworthy. I have kept their card. Next time if I need them, I would call them.

Andy is the only handyman I've used who I would hire again. He came to do an estimate and then was able to schedule repairs for a variety of work at my convenience. While he was replacing the gas connector on the dryer he noticed a tiny gas leak coming from the gas valve. He fixed it and also showed me how to use detergent to check for leaks in the future. Since he had disconnected the dryer vent to do the repair, he also cleaned it, which was awesome. He offered to fix a couple of other small things he noticed. When one turned out not to be a quick fix, he gave an estimate of what it would entail. Andy and Tony worked very quickly, cleaned up after themselves and were very pleasant to have around the house. Because Andy does such good work he is very busy and is usually booking 1 1/2 - 2 weeks in advance, but his work is worth a short wait.
Description of Work: Andy and his partner installed electrical outlets, changed the gas connector on the dryer, replaced defective GFCI outlets and figured out what was wrong with my exterior motion detector lights and fixed them.

This contractor/handyman was responsive from initial telephone inquiry through his excellent, detailed estimate, scheduling, excellent workmanship, and clean-up. He provided protection for an adjacent tiny tree and noted adjacent serious problems needing repair.
Description of Work: The corner of our house was destroyed when struck by an automobile traveling at aprox. 25 mph. Sjostrom repaired all damage to wood framing, installed new insulation and indoor finished wall. He also notified me of adjacent water damage (rotted wood framing adjacent to leaky window) and performed the additional work for a modest additional cost. I was particularily impressed by this contractor and plan to use him again for a multitude of handyman tasks required on this 90 year old house.

The before and after pictures that I took show that the work was done very well. The cleanup was thorough and I am very satisfied and happy that I didn't have to replace the whole window. The cost was fair and I would highly recommend Andy. I guess i just did.
Description of Work: Upon scraping paint from exterior triple window frame I discovered that the sill had rotted away under the paint. Since the rest of the window was sound, I contacted Andy to see if just a repair of the rotted wood would be possible. I emailed him photos of the window and a close-up of the damaged area. He said that it could be repaired without replacing the entire window, so I asked him to do it. He arrived at the appointed time and began work. It turned out that the entire sill had to be replaced due to more extensive deterioration and another small area needed to be cut in. He explained all this to me prior to continuing and told me how he planned to proceed.

I scheduled an appointment with Andy, and his associate arrived on time to complete the work agreed upon (and some more besides). I'm a landlord that was turning over an apartment for the new tenant thus had a compressed time line. It was a relief to me that all the tasks on my list were done on the same day as promised. If I have an issue it was that Andy has a top-end hourly rate. I have to balance that against having the work done and, in fact, having electrical problems that existed for decades finally fixed. I strongly recommend Andy and have actually had him back to do additional work. Both he and his associate were professional, did good, quality work and were patient with my list of things to do which grew even after he arrived. Luckily it was possible to accomplish all the tasks in the amount of time I reserved. I would recommend him to my friends, and I will use him again. . . . oh and they clean up after themselves . . . (almost) priceless.
Description of Work: I had a number of small projects that needed to be accomplished. It can be difficult to find skilled handymen who are knowledgeable about working with the old houses we have in our community (circa 1890 +/-). As a member of Angie's List I was pleased to find that one of the highest-rated handymen on the list was located just a few blocks from my house. Andy was responsive to my inquiry and came by and gave me an estimate of the work to be done. He even gave me advice on a tricky project outside the house and recommended craftsman to do the work. I had a bathroom faucet installed, changed pulls on the kitchen cabinets, analyzed and resolved a three-way light switch problem, replaced heating vent covers (not so easy when you're replacing 60-year-old vents -- a saw was required), replaced the light on a ceiling fan, resolved problem with non-working light fixture (wire tracing and testing) and a few other things.

We have hired Andy several times, and each time we have been very happy with his professionalism, friendliness, honesty, and the quality of his work. Most recently, he installed a handrail leading into my mother-in-law's bedroom. Apart from the very nice job (both aesthetically and in terms of the solidity of the work), we also appreciated how quickly Andy made room in his schedule to accommodate us. In the past, Andy has patched a roof leak and advised us on what work we needed done by roofers, and installed a baseboard heater. In addition to the quality of the work, Andy is set apart from the rest both by the way he listens to what you need and by the way he thoroughly explains the options for doing the work. He wants to make sure work is done right. His price is a little high, but for someone who genuinely cares about his work and is honest and open and straightforward, it's well worth it. We feel very lucky to have found him and plan to call him every time we need handyman services of any kind.

From the initial contact of scheduling an appointment, Andy (and his support staff) were extremely helpful. We had Andy come for an estimate first. He spotted a dangerous situation with our daughter's ceiling fan and advised us that it's a safety issue and we should make the mounting of a new ceiling fan a priority. We did that and now that ceiling fan, which he mounted through to the attic, is the most secure in the entire house! He also mounted a large flat-screen TV in the basement. Andy found a cost effective way to fix our front storm door so that we didn't have to buy another one. Not only was he the most reasonable price-wise of the hand-ful of others we talked to, he was respectful of our time, very courteous in his approach and extremely helpful. We have already set another appointment to get more work done with him. I would highly, highly recommend him to anyone looking to get big or small jobs done.
Description of Work: Services included 1) Installing a ceiling fan in our daughter's room. Because of plaster ceilings, installation was done via the attic. 2) Mounting of a large flat-screen TV; 3) fixing the hinges and mounting of front storm door

Fascia repair: Sjostrom rounded the 45 minute repair job to one-half hour and charged me $75, which I considered more than fair. No problems have arisen, though we have been through several big storms since June. Front door repair: Andy was actually able to straighten and save the original piece of wood. After the work, he pointed out several easy weatherization improvements that could be made to the door and the doorframe. The visit was 'No Charge', a very agreeable price for a high quality repair.
Description of Work: A major wind storm tore through the western suburbs in June. The day after the storm, I noticed a large piece of fascia at the roof peak of my house had become detached and was flapping in the breeze. It was too high for me to attempt any repairs myself. Using Angie's List, I selected handiman Andy Sjostrom on the basis of excellent ratings and because he lives nearby. He was available on one day notice. After looking at the damage, he explained all the options (repair, replace, remove) and the price and aesthetic implications of each. The repair took about 45 minutes on the ladder. I also hired Andy on August 10, 2011, to fix my hundred-year old plate glass front door where the retaining pieces had buckled. I was concerned that any new pieces of wood used in the repair "look original," if possible, and that the glass be firmly secured in place. Andy set to work immediately, using tools he had with him. The repairs were made, and the glass was secured.

Couldn't be more pleased. Will definately call on Andy again in the future.
Description of Work: Andy and his business associate Tony did a great job. We had started a kitchen redo years ago with another company but ran out of funds after the new cabinets, counter tops, and plumbing for dishwasher were put in. We were left with partially torn out tile and unfinished drywall. In just 2 days of work Andy and Tony removed all the old tile and put up beautiful bead-board despite the non-level condition of our 1920's style plaster walls. The work is gorgeous. They were both so organized, prompt, and polite. They even leveled the wobbly kitchen dishwasher and fixed the counter top backer board that had jarred loose from the original install not being level- at no added charge. The original estimate was to include painting the bead-board white, but the quality of carpentry work and wood used is so beautiful that I'm just going to stain it. It is so nice to have finished walls in my finished kitchen. I'm so pleased with the work and the nice job they did with cleanup. We were ready for guests to arrive the next day!

He was top-rated on Angie's List so that's why I went with him. What stood out most was that he was very organized and professional in the way he scheduled everything. His communication was extremely good. He was very clear about the work he recommended and he was very clear about what his terms were. He came out for a free estimate and gave me a very detailed run-down of the things that he recommended and how much they would cost. His scheduling process was really easy to navigate and really clear. His organization and professionalism were the overall impression I got. He told me that he and his partner were the only ones that do any of the work that they schedule. He has a call service that answers the phone and I was surprised because it seemed like it was just him. In retrospect, it was actually good that he had a call service handling his scheduling and I actually liked that. When he came out for the estimate, it was just him. He was very friendly and very clear. When he came to do the work, it was him and his partner. All day the two of them were very clear about what they were doing and what the ramifications were. It was a very painless experience. It was a very positive experience. I actually don't know about the price because I didn't do any comparisons. It was more expensive than I expected handyman services to be. I am new to home ownership so I don't really know. I haven't done any comparing. The work that I got was worth the money that I spent. In terms of value or in terms of price, it was very good even though it was higher than I had budgeted for. Their responsiveness was very good. His scheduling was impeccable. They were originally supposed to come a week later. He had a cancellation so he called up and asked if he could come that day. He even came a week early, which was great. He was very punctual. He also called me an hour beforehand to let me know what his schedule was. It was extremely good communication. I do like to comparison shop. He did an incredible job. I probably will end up going with him for a lot of future projects, but I do like to check out the competition as well. I don't like to just go with one person. I am likely to use him again in the future but I will also probably try other services as well and try and get different quotes.

I would definitely hire them back for future projects.
Description of Work: My experience working with Andy and Tony was excellent from the time we got the estimate to finish. Andy was able to get me in right away for an estimate. Then he was able to fit my project in around a few other already scheduled projects to get the work I wanted done within the time frame I was looking for. They made custom shelving for a bedroom, fixed the molding around the floor of a bedroom and did another quick project on the floor wood work between two rooms. I was so impressed with the quality of the work, especially given that it just took two working days! My husband and I was really impressed. I would definitely hire them back for future projects.

When Andy went to the lumberyard to pick up the wood, he found cedar on sale. He got me cedar, which is higher quality than originally planned, for approximately the same price. In replacing the old fence, Andy and his assistant had to dig up and move some large, heavy rocks, which slowed the project but was done without hesitation or complaint. Andy was very careful to protect my lilac bushes, which adjoin the fence. The fence posts were set level and grounded in concrete, which is much better than what I originally had. Fence posts were topped with lovely copper finials. Because my house is 100 years old, I wanted to maintain a bit of an antique look, so the original old, metal gate was reinstalled. The new fence is a work of art. I am thrilled with it and it makes a great backdrop for my flower garden and nature photography, as well as protecting my property. Cleanup was prompt and thorough. Andy also gave me advice on how to treat cedar.

Andy brought a friend so the job was finished sooner than otherwise. They each worked on different repairs, and everything was done quite well. They each explained what they had done and showed me the finished work. They were pleasant, and it turned out we had mutual friends! That's one of the reasons I like to hire someone local to do work for me.

I initially contacted Andy through his website but received no reply. I called a week later and he said the site had technical issues. Andy came by our condo to do an estimate on building a custom cabinet to disguise the washing machine in our kitchen. He took a number of measurements and seemed excited by the job (also by the prospect that several other unit owners in the building were requesting a similar cabinet to be built). Given the financial opportunity, I assumed that Andy would be active in pursuing the business. However, after he left, he never followed up with an estimate, phone call, or email, so we continued our search.

Thanks for taking the time to submit a response. We strive for perfection with each interaction, but realize that we fell short and apologize for any inconvenience. We'd love to earn your business on future projects. Since last May when I came out for the estimate, we've streamlined our proposal process to providing the estimates at the time of the appointment. I called Andy to get an estimate on replacing the back porch, stairs and railing. His inspection revealed that an upright beam under the rear of the house was leaning outward and recommended that that be replaced also. I agreed. During the course of the work, they discovered that the support beam had been perched on a pile of large rocks which had to be removed. Removal of the rocks took considerable time and effort, but the final price for this project was exactly as estimated. Also per the estimate, the project was completed in three days. Andy and his assistant did an excellent job. The finished product was much higher quality than the original and very attractive. I am very pleased with Andy's work.
