Our hot water heater was leaking and, given that it was about 12+ years old, we figured we would have to replace the unit. Tom from Knox came out, assessed the problem, and advised us to replace the unit, as the cost of repair wouldn't be worth it, again, given the age of the unit. Tom was extremely professional and personable. We inquired about a tankless system, which he advised against, and explained why. Tom was able to get a new unit to us installed within two days, and probably would have gotten it in sooner had our schedules allowed for it. Overall, we were quite pleased with Tom's recommendation and the installation. His company came referred through my parents, who also had their hot water heater replaced by Knox. I would go with them again. My wife and I both felt that this was a trustworthy company.

Can't be happier with their response in one of the worst blizzards the Chicao are has had in years
Description of Work: I bought a furnce from Know about 5 yr's ago, it has performed as he said it would. This past night during the Chicago area bllizzard our furnace was not kicking out heat. I called Tom at 6:15 AM and got his answering service, left a message. Tom called 10 min's later and decided he'd come out from to our location a 30 mile drive while the storm was still in full force. He had to park about 300 ft from the house and walk to us because streets were still not open enough. He fixed the furnace probelm in about 15 min's. This response was fantastic and Knox has always done exactly what they said they would ... Tom is a great owner and service guy.

Continued: I was provided the owner's manuals after the installation. While reading, I discovered that the furnace required that an ''auxiliary condensate drain pan'' be installed under the entire furnace and condensate pump- ''if the furnace was over a finished ceiling or living area'' -which it was. When I asked Tom why it was not installed he said ''we don't install them,it was not needed.'' The city of Chicago Dept. of Buildings (Ventilation) was contacted to inspect the installation - the pan is required and they cited Knox. I had several conversations and wrote to Knox requesting that the work be completed as required by the manufacturer. This went on for over 2 1/2 months after the installation. Rheem's customer service was contacted on 12/4/06. By 12/7 their representative informed me that Knox would schedule a date, of my choice, during the next week to install a 30X30 condensate drain pan, with a float switch, under my furnace. The work was finally completed on 12/15/06.
Description of Work: Installation of a new Rheem high-efficiency, modulating gas furnace, thermostat and Rheem 50 gallon water heater. The installation started 9/22/2006 at 8:00 AM and was completed at 10:00 PM. There was a two man crew. The furnace work was first. The water heater was done after the furnace, which started about 4:00 pm and which meant that the other unit owners in the condo association would be coming home from work to no water availability. The water remained off until about 8:30 pm, because the old 50 gallon heater had to be drained first and one of the rusted valves broke off. They had to wait for someone to bring a replacement valve to them. This was to be a completely new installation. However, the old gas pipe coils were not replaced on the water heater. When I asked the supervisor why they were not, he told me I should have said something earlier and that it was to late. I informed the supervisor this was unacceptable and that I would contact Tom Jun, the next day.

THE INSTALLATION OF THE FURN. FOR THE MEMBER TOOK 3-4 HRS. LONGER THAN USUAL BECAUSE THE OLD FURNACE WAS IN A ROOM THAT WAS BUILT AROUND THE FURNACE. THE OLD FURNACE DID NOT FIT THROUGH THE DOORWAY, SO IT HAD TO BE DISMANTLED TO BE TAKEN OUT OF THE ROOM. THE COLD WATER GATE VALVE FEEDING THE EXISTING WATER HEATER BROKE WHEN OUR INSTALLER CLOSED THE VALVE TO DRAIN THE TANK. IN CHANGING THE VALVE, THE WATER TO THE BUILDING HAD TO BE SHUT OFF. THE EXISTING STAINLESS STEEL FLEXIBLE GAS CONNECTOR TO THE WATER HEATER HAD NO CRACKS AND WAS IN GOOD CONDITION SO OUR INSTALLER LEFT IT CONNECTED. HOWEVER, WE DID END UP REPLACING IT ON 9/25/06 (THE FOLLOWING MON, THE EQUIPMENT WAS INSTALLED ON FRI. 9/22/06). THE SECONDARY DRAIN PAN FOR THE FURNACE WAS NOT INSTALLED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO FLOOR DRAIN IN THE FURNACE ROOM. WE EXPLAINED TO THE MEMBER THAT ONCE A FLOOR DRAIN WAS INSTALLED IN THE ROOM, WE WOULD INSTALL THE SECONDARY DRAIN PAN UNDER THE FURNACE. THE CITY INSP. DID CITE THAT THE FURNACE NEEDED A SEC. DRAIN PAN, BUT MISSED THE FACT THAT THERE WAS NO FLOOR DRAIN. WE SPOKE WITH THE INSPECTORS OFFICE & THEY STATED THAT SINCE THERE WAS NO FLOOR DRAIN, THE INSTALLATION W/OUT THE SEC. DRAIN PAN WAS O.K. HOWEVER, WE DID END UP GOING BACK ON 12/16/06 TO INSTALL THE SEC. DRAIN PAN. WE ADDRESSED EVERY ISSUE THE CUST. HAD. WHAT ELSE DOES SHE WANT FROM US? WE STRIVE FOR CUSTOMER EXCELLENCE & HAVE GONE ABOVE & BEYOND IN THIS CASE. P.S. THE RHEEM FACTORY PAID US TO INSTALL THE SECONDARY PAN.

Excellent overall. On time, very professional, and knowledgeable. They pledged to meet any other price, and then followed through on that promise by knocking off nearly $1000 when we found a lower bid. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Supplied and installed a new 65 gallon/360,000 btu water heater for our 12-unit condominium complex. Our tank cracked on a Friday afternoon. Knox was out performing an examination at 8 AM on Saturday, and had the new heater installed by 3 PM. They called in their workers from their weekend rest to get the job done for us. Every other firm only promised service on Monday.

I had just bought this house and kept smelling gas fumes in the basement area. I called the company on Monday and they said that the service person would be out between 9 and 10 the following day. The service guy, (Frank) was there at 9 AM. He asked us to explain our problem and then went right to work. He was very thorough and seemed to know his business. He checked and cleaned the furnace found the filter to be very dirty. He also checked out the fireplace but could not see anything out of place. He suggested that we call a fireplace service to properly service the fireplace as that is a different type of heating equipment and he was not rated to work on that type of unit. He went out of his way to track the gas smell and thought that it might be coming from an improperly fitted sump pump ejector in the laundry room. Guess I need to call a plumber next, back to Angie's list for plumbers I guess.
Description of Work: Service person checked and cleaned the furnace. Inspected duct work to see if all dampers were open to give max air flow to each room. Advised us about the age of furnace and useful service life still available for the unit. Also requested service to a gas fireplace in the family room. There is an odor of some kind when unit is in full burn. There also is condensation on the glass door near the bottom as well as the glass being 3/4 covered with a cloudy appearance to it.

I LEFT A MESSAGE WITH KNOX'S ANSWERING SERVICE TUESDAY NIGHT. WEDNESDAY AM, DEBBIE CONTACTED ME FOR AN APPOINTMENT. SINCE I USE A LOCKBOX FOR MY NEWLY PURCHASED, UNFURNISHED HOUSE I DON'T NEED TO BE 'ON SITE' TO LET CONTRACTORS IN OR OUT OF THE HOUSE. WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, DEBBIE CALLED BACK WITH AN ESTIMATE, FULLY EXPLAINING ALL THE COSTS. I WANTED TO USE AN UPGRADED WATER HEATER, SO SHE CHECKED ON ITS PRICE AND CALLED BACK WITHIN 20 MINUTES WITH A NEW ESTIMATE. WE AGREED ON TERMS AND THE CONTRACTORS CAME OUT THURSDAY AM AND FINISHED THE JOB THAT AFTERNOON. I CAME HOME THURSDAY NIGHT AND WAS VERY HAPPY WITH THE QUALITY AND PROFESSIONALISM OF THEIR WORK. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Description of Work: REPLACED DEFECTIVE WATER HEATER WITH AO SMITH PROMAX+ 40 GAS UNIT. REMOVED OLD WATER HEATER. CLEANED AND SERVICED TRANE XE60 FURNACE (AS PART OF PURCHASED 2X YEARLY SERVICE PLAN). REPLACED DEFECTIVE AIR CLEANER UNIT WITH HONEYWELL ELECTRONIC AIR CLEANER. REMOVED ALL OLD PARTS.
