I will be reviewing the proposal.
Description of Work: After several attempts to contact DNR, Tom was able to finally set up an appointment to inspect the house and make recommendations to solve some unique air draft issues and air leaks that other contractors were not able to provide; I think his recommendation may be the best option that has been offered thus far.

Overall it went beautifully.
Description of Work: They completely air sealed attic around. Then added 16 inches of insulation to attic. They were very professional and even covered floor throughout the areas passing thru as to protect our carpet and floor. Was here on time and only left for short period to have lunch. Were finished around 4 pm..Very ambitious crew (four men). Would have them for any project in the future that I have that they do. Kudos to the team.

The positive: they were fairly quick, and performed the job in half a day. The windows look good, with one caveat described below. They came to give us an estimate a day or two after we talked to them on the phone, as promised. Although the windows look pretty good, one of them cannot open very well. You have to apply a lot of force to do so. The other two open fine. We had to call them 2 or 3 times for them to send somebody to check them, and basically they told us that there was nothing that could be done. They also took longer than they had said to come and do the job (2 weeks later than they had told us). We are in general satisfied with the job, although it could have been better. Their responsiveness definitely needs to improve. In other jobs we've had done with other people this year, someone in charge actually came after the job was done to make sure everything was ok. But this didn't happen with DNR. We actually had to call them because of a problem, and they came only after we called a couple of times. We'll definitely try somebody else next time we need work on our windows.
Description of Work: Installed three windows in basement. They first removed old metal ones, and then installed new vinyl windows.

They came highly rated by the energy auditors that we used. That was the main reason we went with them. It was blow-in insulation. I was not here most of the time. They started the work. My husband was home and my daughter was going crazy; she did not like the noise. I don’t know how much difference it has actually made. I think the company was great to work with. There is still a lot to be done with the house so I can’t say that it made a huge difference at this point. They did a really good job of what they did. The price was pretty fair. It might have costed us about $5000. I did not hear any complaints from my husband about the quality of work. I am pretty sure that they showed up on time. We would hire them again.

This was, from our perspective, a very large project. We liked the fact that owner Tom came to do the estimate and he was not a "salesman", but communicated with us like an engineer. The estimate was more than that from other firms, but we were also convinced that we were also getting a better quality of work, not just "blowing in insulation." They did a blower-door test before and after. Tom estimated 3 days, but they sent large crews of men and the job was done in 2. The workers were primarily Spanish-speakers but an English-speaking foreman was on the job site all day and available to us for easy communication. All work was done from the outside; there was some blown insulation that snuck inside through cracks, but that is what happens when you have a leaky 100-year-old-house (just be prepared do do a bit of vacuuming in spots). Outdoors it got pretty dusty, but the foreman did a great job of getting the sidewalk area clean at the end of each day. Even though they had to rip off strips of siding and drill hundreds of holes from outside everything was patched, caulked, and put back in place amazingly; from the outside it looks identical. We were most impressed with what happened in the attic. When insulating the knee wall, workers found an old furnace ventilation pipe that was completely rusted through (a potential hazard that could put furnace gases in the living space). Although we hired them to do insulation, not ventilation, they worked diligently on repairing this and clearly made it a priority. They did not have furnace pipe on their truck, obviously, so I ran out to buy a 6-foot length (about $20). Then several workers spent the better part of an hour removing/replacing the pipe, on their knees behind the attic wall. They worked late on it so we could go to bed that night and safely run the furnace. There was no extra charge. Overall the insulation has made a huge difference. The house is more comfortable, our gas bills dropped 35-40% for Nov-Feb, and we have saved at least $800 so far. The project will definitely pay for itself in less than 10 years, maybe even 5 considering the rebates and tax breaks you can get for insulating.
Description of Work: The firm insulated a large, 2-story century-old house by retrofitting cellulose insulation in all exterior walls. They also did insulation in the knee walls of the finished attic.

We had an energy audit done on our house and learnt that our house was leaky. With Angie's list positive rating, we called DNR for an estimate for the insulation. Tom came to inspect the house. He seemed to be professional, experienced and business savvy. He explained what he was going to do to insulate the house, and pointed out issues that energy auditors often missed. A quote was provided 4 days later. Tom was patient to go through the quote line by line w/ me over the phone. Once we sealed the deal, the crew came out within a week. There were 4 men. Eddy, the head guy was very pleasant to work with. On the day, Tom came out again to go through the job list w/ Eddy. The crew spent a whole day on the job. The job included: blew in cellulose into our cathedral ceiling and some parts of walls, sealed the gaps in the floor joist with the wall in the attic, insulated a bookcase with foam board and spray foam, weather stripped a few access doors, sealed the gaps between heat registers and floor, and sealed all the gaps in the house/garage created by electrical lines and plumbing. The team seemed to be really experienced. They went beyond what we knew what was needed, and did a very good job. They did a blow door test before and after. The leak rating was improved by almost 40%. Though DNR was pricy comparing to another quote we got, it definitely did way more than just blowing in insulation. The next day, we discovered a mistake made by the team. Tom sent his team promptly back to fix the problem. If we ever need to insulate our house again, we will definitely hire DNR.
Description of Work: DNR insulated my attic, wall and floor and air sealed all the holes in the house.

It went very well. We were all impressed with their thoroughness, professionalism, expertise, and courtesy. Tom McElherne was a pleasure to work with and helped walk us through the process of getting the association together to undertake this big project. Kevin and Michael in the office were also very helpful, and the field crew were top-notch. The only bump in the road was when we were finally trying to get a price for the interior work and get the job scheduled, Tom wasn't as good about returning phone calls as I would have liked. But a call to Kevin, another higher-up, did the trick. All in all an outstanding experience.
Description of Work: We live on the top floor of an old 10 unit condo building. We had an energy audit which revealed that there was no insulation in the attic and that there were lots of places within our unit where air was leaking. DNR came out and airsealed the entire attic cavity with foam and then filled it with cellulose insulation, to an R-value of 40. When they were done, they patched the roof, which they warrantied for 5 years. The crew also went into 4 units and, for an additional $350 per unit, caulked and foamed and otherwise airsealed those units. It was a 2 day job on the roof, and two to four hours inside each unit.

It wasn't hard to get an appointment for them to come out. It took about 3 weeks to get an estimate. I wasn't happy with the customer service in getting the estimate, but we didn't really know who else to go with for this type of work, so we decided to move forward with the project. I signed the estimate and sent it back to them and then we proceeded to hear NOTHING in response. Then about four weeks later, another man who we had not worked with or dealt with called to set up an appointment to do the work. At this point, I was so irritated with their service, I really didn't want to go with them. But, again, we didn't know who else to use, so I agreed. Once the crew came out and did the work, it was fine. They weren't particularly careful or clean, but they weren't bad either. They were fine. I think the insulation went fine. We won't really know if it was worth it until next winter. As a follow-up, I had a few questions regarding the documentation we needed in order to get the Tax Credit for the insulation work. I asked a question via email and haven't heard back. Terrible responsiveness.
Description of Work: After completing an energy audit with another company, they recommended DNR as one of the companies that could complete some of the action items, specifically blowing in insulation in the attic, sealing up some windows and holes.

It went great. I was very impressed with Tom when he came to give me the estimate. I called him after having a home energy audit performed on my two-flat. I had very detailed instructions about how to insulate from the auditor; Tom responded very intelligently to the recommendations and actually persuaded me to take a slightly different course (When I checked this with the energy auditor, she agreed it was a good plan). DNR was not the cheapest quote I got, but I was most impressed by how knowledgeable Tom was and by the fact that he seemed to take the air sealing part of the job very seriously (which had been heavily stressed by the energy auditor). Additionally, I was impressed by the fact that they used a blower door test and could objectively measure the effectiveness of their work. The person who handled the scheduling was very professional. The crew was also very professional, very polite, and respectful. They worked fast and efficiently. It was really cool.
Description of Work: First they air-sealed the gaps in my attic, then blew in cellulouse insulation beneath the floor and on top of the floor (10 inches deep). They built a walkway out of rigid foam so that I could walk through the attic to access the furnace and the window. Any part of the ductwork that was not covered by the cellulose was covered with spray foam. After all this, they air sealed a lot of gaps in the basement, both to the outside and also around the rough openings of the heating ducts. Before and after installing the insulation, they conducted a blower-door test in which they hook up a big fan to the front door and suck all the air out of the house. Then, using a menometer, they measure the relative air pressure and come up with a number that basically tells you how drafty your house is. My draftiness number had dropped 30% after the insulation was installed!

Tom came out and gave us an estimate. It was obvious that his company does this kind of work constantly because he was very specific and detailed in his quote. He also offered to do the dormers for $200 each (there are four) since he was going to have a full crew here anyway. The insulation, air sealing, and windows went very well and were done in a day. The dormers, however, proved to be much more difficult and took much longer than expected. We had to go out of town the last day they worked so we didn't see the final result until about a week later. We were not happy with the appearance of the dormers, although I think they were done technically correctly. It's an old house and the dormers weren't really square any more so the siding looked crooked. We called DNR and expressed our concerns and they sent the owner of the company out that week to look at the house. He agreed that the job needed some reworking and got a crew out within two business days. The crew had me come out regularly as the work progressed to see if I was happy with how it looked and an inspector for the company came in at the end and walked around the house with me to make sure one last time. Despite the fact that DNR spent days and days working on the dormers and, I'm sure, took a huge bath on the cost of the project, they were absolutely committed to making sure I was happy with the final result.

Very knowledgeable and professional, went out of the way to try to use "green" products due to our chemical sensitivity. They performed a blower test before and after the work to make sure there had been an acceptable improvement in the sealing of the house. Worked well with the person from our energy audit who was here watching the work. The crew that was here kept us informed of what they were doing and cleaned up after themselves. I would recommend them and use them again.

It took the DNR team of 3 almost 2 full days to do all the work. They were thoughtful and thorough (Eddie crew lead understands this business). As they discovered other insulating concerns or opportunities they addressed them. Additionally we hired a project manager from the company that provided the initial energy audit, to be on site as a project manager and work with the DNR crew to assure everything was addressed. The peace of mind as a homeowner to have a 3rd party expert on site on our behalf was comforting. The resulting team work created a great end product.
Description of Work: In January we had a home energy audit completed which confirmed our need for insulation and a need to stop air leaks. Following the audit,we gathered bids from 3 companies. We selected DNR to add insulation to our 1927 balloon wood framed 2 story home. They blew in cellulose insulation into the basement walls, the attic, and soffits. To gain access to the attic they also installed a scuttle in the hallway of the 2nd floor. They also used foam board and spray foam to insulate a crawl space, rear section of the basement, and an odd closet on the 2nd floor. The house is approximately 3000 sq ft with an unfinished basement.

I am very pleased with DNR and would definitely hire them again. Calls to representative Tom McElherne were returned promptly, and explanations were clear. The bid was very detailed about exactly what work would be done. Workers were courteous and respectful, provided additional sealing around existing window sills, and cleaned up well at the end of each day. On-the-job supervisor Alfonso provided frequent updates and explanations.
