It was a great experience! As an interior designer, it's important to me that I have good working relationships with my vendors. Tithof (and especially Cheryl Jost) is informative, helpful in the selections process AND very responsive to questions and concerns. The tile was beautiful and delivered on time. Cheryl has even gone out of her way in the past to assist me with client questions on a granite that my client purchased elsewhere. I have always found Tithof to have great products and excellent service. I highly recommend them!

It was really bad. They were double the price of the fabricator I previously used for my bathroom. I purchased three slabs of marble for the project. When I went to look at the computerized layout of the design, they only used two of the 3 slabs of marble I had purchased. When I inquired about the third slab, they claimed it was now theirs.
Description of Work: I hired them to fabricate my kitchen counter.

Response from TITHOF TILE & MARBLE INC
The fabrication of this kitchen was on the cusp of needing 2-3 slabs. Natural stone is very challenging to try to match mid-stream, and is actually not always even possible. To ensure we had enough material Tithof made the suggestion that we would purchase 3 slabs for this project. When it was determined the layout would actually fit nicely on 2 slabs Tithof Tile offered to credit the client back immediately for the 3rd unused slab. Unfortunately at that point the client decided to cancel his contract, he was promptly credited back his deposit and the slabs were returned to the supplier. This is fact- we own the balance of unused material to sell as remnants, that is true with almost all reputable fabricators and is the nature of our business. Had there been an issue with the 2nd slab at any point during the fabrication or installation resulting in the need for a 3rd slab this review would be a very different conversation. We would be being praised for our forethought.

Think very carefully before engaging this tile company, no matter what your friends’ experiences may be. Whenever construction goes smoothly, everyone’s happy. The way a company handles problems is indicative of their decency, honesty, and customer service. PLEASE READ TO THE END FOR UPDATE TO PROVIDER'S RESPONSE. Tithof does not stand behind the samples it provides as being representative of its product. I bought both slate for a mudroom floor and Oceanside glass tile for a backsplash. The representative, Brook [Last name removed], showed me a sample of slate in the show room. I specifically asked about the white splotches I noticed on the slate tile. Brook assured me that this was superficial only and would not appear after sealing. She wiped with a wet rag to show me the deep black color and no splotches. Total incompetence. After installed, many tiles had white spots. Even if wiped first, the white splotches re-appeared after drying AND after sealing. Brook blamed the installer for not ordering enough tile so that we wouldn’t use the ones with white splotches — at least 1/3 of the tiles I’d ordered, which were not-returnable after delivery. So I was expected to order at least 30% -50% more tile than needed, which cost I would have to "eat," to avoid white splotches, We had enough tile, but so many had white splotches, it was hard to know where to put them. The installer actually saved the day by carefully grinding/sanding out the imperfections to remove the white splotches, which were integral to the tile (Full disclosure: I had used only the term "elbow grease" in first iteration of this review; Grinding certainly takes elbow grease) He also reapplied the sealer--all at no charge. He was honorable despite Brook's efforts to excoriate him. The backsplash was a disaster. We chose a glass tile to match existing granite counter. Tile arrived; I laid out an entire box of tile and several pieces from multiple boxes to be sure it was the right color. The tile I ordered was thicker than sample (they never provided a sample of the exact tile. “Sorry, we don’t have your particular choice sample in stock. This sample will be accurate.” The delivered tile looked correct when held up to light and to wall and next to samples. After installation, the tile color was RADICALLY DIFFERENT FROM SAMPLE (See photo of samples propped against the actual installed tile). The sample was peach, matching peach in counter; the installed tile was a muddy brown, reminiscent of the outcome of a very bad illness). John Tithof, owner, came out. Arrogant; defensive. He said we shouldn't have installed — even though looked ok before installation. He chastised us, saying we should have primed the tiles. When we said the tiles HAD been primed, he reversed himself. "Oh, no. Oceanside won't back it up if primed." Hmmm. Dissembler? I asked what "equitable solution could be found" for us having to rip out the muddy brown tile, buy new tile, install it; delay of 6 weeks as our installer was on a different job. If they had offered us $100 as a sign of goodwill (The backsplash tile cost was 24 times that), Tithof would have gone a long way toward customer satisfaction. Instead they charged my credit card for the balance without my permission (contract notes they can do this. Too bad I didn’t notice that detail): If you are foolish enough to use Tithof, CANCEL YOUR CREDIT CARD AFTER MAKING DEPOSIT. Then you have some negotiating power with these arrogant charlatans––they claim to have knowledge they don’t possess and don’t stand behind their representation of the product they sell. That to me is the definition of a charlatan. UPDATE TO PROVIDER'S RESPONSE: Although John Tithof claims his intent is not to offer a "rebuttal," and just "educate" us all about tile, it's clear from his content that he's taking issue specifically with my review, with remarks referencing it thoughout his Tile 101 presentation. Therefore, I feel it's necessary to respond to his "not-so-subtle rebuttal." TITHOF: "We are not happy if our clients are not happy." If this is true, did John Tithof and his sales representative, Brook, single me out to make a mockery of this "promise?" It was clear from my interactions with both of them that they were not the least bit concerned about my "happiness." They responded in emails to my distress, and John came out to the house, but ultimately their goal was to tell us the entire color problem was our fault. I have no doubt Tithof goes out of its way to keep their "designers and contractors" happy because they expect repeat business from them. I was just a one time client, so why bother if I'm happy? "We pride ourselves on our service and resolution of the rare conflict." Not so in my case. Neither tile product I ordered from Tithof was as represented: the slate had permanent, embedded white splotches and the sample they provided for the backsplash was IN NO WAY SIMILAR to the INSTALLED PRODUCT. I emphasize INSTALLED because John repeats, "If you're not happy with the tile, don't install.' So I'll repeat: the tile looked fine UNTIL IT WAS INSTALLED. I'm not sure why he's not getting this. I didn't expect him to reimburse me for the installed tile. (It's stamped all over the boxes: NO REFUND ONCE INSTALLED, so I knew I was simply screwed). I merely expected some sort recognition that, for whatever reason (certainly not in my control) that the sample was PEACH ( as was the uninstalled tile) but MUDDY BROWN AFTER INSTALLATION. With a reputation to uphold one would think Tithof might have made a small gesture of goodwill or apology and offered a TOKEN CREDIT. I never asked for reimbursement; I simply wrote the following, taken directly from my email to Brook on 5/8/13: "How can Tithof help us reach an equitable solution for receiving a tile that, once installed, bears no resemblance in color to what we ordered based on the sample provided by Tithof?" Just look at the photo. THE TILE COLOR CHANGED RADICALLY AFTER INSTALLATION! I never would have installed this tile if it had appeared muddy brown out of the box! Even a coffee shop offers a token gesture of a free coffee if it makes a tiny mistake on your order. Could John have offered $100--anything? on a $4,000 order––just to say, "Hey, sorry for your trouble," especially when BOTH tiles I bought from Tithof were not as represented? Just clueless. I wouldn't be writing this negative review if he had shown any concern for my "happiness." All they offered was a large helping of blame directed to me and my installer. (As an aside, I would be wary of using Oceanside tile. It's beautiful, but as you can see, many opportunities for messing up and the home owner has no real recourse with these radical color differences.) 2. THE SLATE: John states the obvious: "Natural stone has variances." I love the variances in natural slate -- the operative word is "variances"--the uneven texture, the lovely differences tile to tile - - not GIANT WHITE BLOTCHES AS IF FROM A BIRD VISITATION. Here's a direct quote from my email to Brook, trying to figure out what to do about these blotches : "Re: the slate: If you'll notice on the sample, there were all sorts of white and grey spots showing, and as said, I was informed that the whole tile would become black once sealed." John is right: those white blotches were IN THE TILE, but in the showroom, when i saw white and grey spots, Brook wiped them away and told me they would disappear after sealer. Apparently there were embedded blotches on the tile I received, which stood out even more after sealing! And yes, because they were embedded in the tile itself, my installer DID SAND THEM OUT (I clarified this in my review) -- which, btw, takes "elbow grease!" My installer then re-sealed with the proper product. Re: application of sealer: I personally called DuPont to check on proper application and proper sealer. I should note that my installer has 27 years experience with installation and sealing, is the primary installer/contractor for all Sephora Midwest and Eastern U.S. showrooms, as well as the number one tile installer for one of Chicagoland's leading architects. John gives advice to potential tile buyers. Here's my advice to Tithof and other tile/stone dealers: 1. Homeowners generally know NOTHING about the vagaries of tile. If a tile product is not true to the sample you provide, tell the owner up front not, as Brook did, AFTER problem emerged: that it is notoriously difficult to provide accurate samples for glass tile. 2. If a tile is likely to have embedded "natural materials within it" (like quartz) that are not obvious on the sample, tell the owner upfront about this: e.g., "1/3 to 1/2 of the tiles you order will have big white blotches. If you don't like that idea and don't want to order double the tile you need, pick a different tile." 3. Offer a proper solution to a problem. John states in his rebuttal that anything embedded in the stone must be sanded out. Yet here's the advice he gave us, taken directly from an email from Brook: "John had two suggestions[ [for the white splotches] 1) Black Ink/Marker2) Drill Small Dremel Hole through white spot to remove and fill with Char Black Grout." That's right! Black marker on my slate tile! No mention of sanding here! 4. Tell the homeowner every single detail he/she needs to know about everything that can go wrong. We don't have enough knowledge to ask every question. I'd never dreamed of embedded white quartz in slate. 5. Finally, be decent. If the sample you provided was so totally off, and the homeowner couldn't see this in the delivered tile before installation, make at least a token gesture of kindness to show you care. So there you have it. Take a chance with Tithof if my experience doesn't frighten you.
Description of Work: I purchase slate tile for a mudroom floor and Oceanside glass tile for a kitchen backsplash. I did not hire Tithof for installation. I was so excited about the prospect of beautiful glass tile to bring a 20-year old kitchen up-to-date. I couldn't have been more heartbroken and disappointed by the service and product, and the extremely negative interactions with both the sales rep and the owner, John TIthof.

Response from TITHOF TILE & MARBLE INC
As an organization we are not happy if our clients are not happy. We would not have nearly 70% of our annual revenue generated from repeat homeowners, superior general contractors and high-end designers if we were not THE company to work with for the past 30 years. We pride ourselves on our service and resolution of the rare conflict. It’s quite clear that this reviewer perceives the events of this tile sale in a contrary manner, it is not our intent to provide a rebuttal as that would not be productive. We would instead like to take the opportunity to use this as a lesson for all who are considering a remodel project using tile or natural stone materials. Tithof Tile and Marble would like to offer the following tips for a successful project: • Natural stone has variances that are inherent to how Mother Nature made them. Some people view them as flaws and some as beauty marks, who are you? If you are in the flaw camp and these will bother you, we suggest you look into alternate options. • When your tile supplier suggests a quantity of materials to order they will always include an overage. This overage recommendation is based on their vast industry knowledge, experience with range, breakage and natural inherent characteristics of the tile you have chosen. Different materials require different amounts of overage. At Tithof we do not work on commission so please trust that we are not intentionally just trying to sell you more tile. We want you to have to have the ability to sort through each box and select the range you would like. • When you or your installer apply sealer to your stone be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. More is not better, it’s just more; your stone will only absorb a certain amount. If any sealer dries on the surface (as opposed to its intent to absorb completely) it will change the appearance and cause a milky haze or pooling, resulting in the appearance of white spots. • If you can rub something off of stone with “elbow grease” and not grinding off with diamond pads, it is ON the stone not IN the stone. • When your tile vendor wets a tile they are trying to show you one of two things; (1) the color this material will take when sealed or oiled. (2) How that sealer will or potentially will not mask any surface scratches that may be present on the stone at time of delivery. • Any tile vendor will be happy to order you a sample. We are no exception and will always order any sample for you when requested. You should be aware that there is typically a charge and production lead time. Not everyone is willing to wait or pay. Tithof is a small boutique showroom, and not unlike many of us who are not warehouse stores, we have limited space and therefore only stock samples in the most popular colors, sizes, etc. We represent a vast number of tile and stone lines and can’t possibly have a sample on hand of every color in every shape, size and series. • When you are in the process of narrowing down your final selection and have been provided with a number of samples, some for color some for size/shape and some to convey design concept this can be confusing. Be sure to clarify any color or range questions in your final meeting before you place an order. • When you receive the tile you ordered and you send an email saying that “you opened every box, looked at every piece, were not sure if you liked it, but had your installer complete installation and grout it anyway” that is what we in the business consider to be the most definitive form of acceptance. Your tile vendor cannot take that tile back as it is now a part of your home. Bottom line, if you are not 100% happy with the tile when it gets to your home, contact us immediately, DO NOT install it. Please allow your tile vendor the opportunity to make it right at this time before installation as that is the only window we have with our manufacturer. There are of course ranges in any handmade tile and sometimes you may even receive the wrong tile, mistakes do happen and can only be corrected prior to installation. If your installer is pressuring you because you scheduled them or will have to pay for the lost day, consider which is worse, 1 day of an installers pay or a really expensive tile you do not like on your wall for a number of years. • When your tile vendor offers to go to bat for you with their manufacturer provide them with the information they request of you. Manufactures have a claims process; we can’t just call and say “our client doesn’t like it.” Help us help you. We realize if things get to this point you are frustrated and we are very sorry for that but we can’t work on a resolution without your partnership. We have been at this for a long time and we have a wealth of information that we are happy to share. Call us! We look forward to partnering with you on your project.

Otis was extremely professional and knowledgeable plus even came by a 2nd time to ensure he had the correct measurements. He is a straight shooter and did not try and upsell at all, unlike another company I received a quote from. And, the best part was the work was absolutely perfect. Everyone I dealt with at the company was top notch and would highly recommend for all your tile needs as I plan in using them in the future.
Description of Work: They removed and replaced the riser on the threshold of my walk-in shower. It is a 3 piece riser that was originally constructed of the tile that is on the floor and the top portion was starting to show cracks and appeared unstable. Otis from Tithof immediately knew the top portion should have had a granite slab on it instead of the tile in order to support the weight of the glass from the door and glass surround. They also had to create a better pitch to it so water would properly drain off. Also performed some grout and caulk work inside the shower.
