He clarified the issue by resending the estimate to the proper email address, and also sent a copy through the regular mail!

this review should be removed soon. I met with them on 5/22/13, and emailed the estimate on 5/24/13. They were really nice people and had a really nice bathroom remodel job that I would love to do for them, it was right up my alley. but they had a long email address and I transposed the last two #'s from X2 to 2X, I must be dyslexic, or thinking about my tee shirt size, which is a 2XL. so they never received my estimate. I wish they would've called or emailed me to resolve this before posting an F report . one phone call or one email would've avoided all of this, Since I have received this report, I sent the estimate to their proper email address as well as mailed it via US "snail mail" they have received it, and I got a thank you email from her , Gary and Maryann

Very well. Extremely responsive and understanding of budget constraints. They worked quickly and efficiently, providing all that was quoted for and more, little jobs included as they arose for no extra money. Really friendly and excellent work.

I can only imagine how things would have gone if I'd have bought their big deal. Their phone doesn't even ring. It just throws you to the message "I'm sorry - the person you have called has a voice mailbox that has not been set up yet..."
Description of Work: Tried to set up appointment (to see if their big deal was appropriate for our bathroom remodel). Their voice mail hasn't been set up yet & there's no way to contact them. I'm really glad I didn't buy their big deal!

Response from Lupfer Builders
This is a completely unfair review and Angie's List customer service is investigating it. I have had the same phone # for 20 years (773-858-8181) and have never had any voice mail problems. Perhaps they dialed the wrong #. Also, my email and web site are on the listing and I could have been contacted that way. I am a perennial Angie's List super service award winner, and an F review for someone I have never met, never been contacted by, never worked for, never spoke with, is very upsetting to me. I am a small business and take my reviews on Angie's List very seriously.

Drywall work was perfect. Exceeded my expectations. Paint and trim were terrific as well. They did a great job! They worked when they said they would. Dave and Client (me) worked through all details quickly. The workers used drop cloths and were courtious in general as we had a newborn baby in the house and they took every measure to accomodate our requests. Quick, no drama, easy to work with, did what they said they'd do. 1, 2, 3, job done. I'd have them back for more projects and do recommend them. Dave has guys that work for him exclusively, so, he knows them well and they did a great job.

Everything went very well with the job. They installed a new front door (after removing and hauling away the old one). Everything worked very well and looks nice. They also installed 6 recessed lights in the ceiling with 2 switch locations. The third item was a ceiling fan in the bedroom. Because I live in an older home, the electrical work was somewhat challenging. I've done some electrical work myself and this was beyond the scope of a project that I wanted to tackle. So I called Lupfer builders and they did a great job figuring out how to get around some of the challenges. Our bedroom was an addition that did not connect to the rest of the attic and there was no overhead light. This meant that they had to run new wiring to install the ceiling fan. They did a great job and were even able to figure out how to do it without cutting any holes in the ceiling! Overall I was very happy with the services performed.

Lupfer Builders earned the highest recommendation. Our home had something of a structural emergency when our front porch pillars started to slip off their bases. Dave Lupfer called and scheduled our work immediately. The workers came on time and performed excellent work. Based on the quality of their carpentry and painting work on the porch, we also hired them to redo two areas of flat roofing on our home. Again, the quality was top-notch. Dave Lupfer was always available by phone or email to answer questions and/or concerns. Our experience with Lupfer Builders was excellent, and we highly recommend them.

These gusy were great! Punctual, professional and pleasant to deal with. They didn't seem to mind that all our projects were little annoying things, they got here and got started right away. Everything looks great and I can FINALLY check all those projects off our to do list.
Description of Work: I bought two of their deals for a contractor for a day and they were great! They changed two ceiling fans, two light fixtures, fixed an outlet that wasn't working properly, installed a handrail for our staircase, installed a storm door and two doorway thresholds. Oh and replaced a door knob. They also suggested a solution for a current ceiling fan/light that wouldn't work properly all the time.

Dave Lupfer and Dallas from Designsmith came out to do a kitchen design and give me an estimate for the work. Dallas was extremely helpful and provided a design that I would never have considered. Dave took some time to get to know my needs. I received plans and an estimate a few days later. I decided to go with Lupfer Builders for the remodel, and worked with Dallas for my cabinets. I can't say enough about both Dave and Dallas. Dallas was extremely helpful throughout the design and cabinet purchasing process, and helped with suggestions. Dave Lupfer and his crew were fantastic! They were there every time they said they would be, they were punctual, cleaned up at the end of each day, and worked very quickly. The work was very well done, and Dave met with and consulted with me throughout the process. He had good suggestions for different choices, and always let me know if something I wanted would cost extra. There were no hidden costs throughout the process - I knew exactly what I was paying for and what I was getting. I would definitely recommend Lupfer Builders and will use them for my next project.
Description of Work: I initially purchased the "big deal" which included kitchen designs and plans. After the initial consultation as part of the big deal, I contracted with Lupfer Builders for the full kitchen remodel.

Within 48 hours of my initlal call, Dave was at my home to discuss the kitchen remodeling I am planning. What first impressed me was his relaxed manner. I've never done any remodeling on anything so the prospect causes me pronounced inner anxiety. Luckily, I perceived that Dave would be great to work with because he seems like someone who doesn't "rattle" easily; he has a very Zen vibe. Second, I appreciated that Dave was respectfully cognizant of our budgetary constraints. He even said he could work within whatever budget we presented. So that's a great comfort, as well, and makes me even more sure that he's the right guy to be in charge of this project. (And, for the record, his bid for the labor--which will involve opening up a room adjacent to the kitchen by cutting into the wall, i.e., no small potatoes in terms of effort--was a very reasonable $13,508.) Third, unlike the three other contractors I spoke with a few years ago, Dave is a hands-on owner. He either answers his phone or calls back very quickly. All three of the other contractors were relatively difficult to get in touch with. Finally, he made me feel very confident that my kitchen would turn out exactly like I want it too. Given that he's the only contractor I've ever consulted who seems like a genuinely nice and honest guy, I cannot wait to proceed with the remodeling. In fact, when I told him I needed a few months to get my ducks in a row (darn ducks!), he was very gracious about it. I look forward to writing a follow-up review, complete with both "before" and "after" photos, when the remodeling is done!
Description of Work: So looking forward to working with Lupfer Builders!

The only real issue we had was that Dave had to delay our start date by a couple weeks because his previous job went long. Fortunately the timing was not too much of an inconvenience, and Dave gave us a credit for the rush order we'd done on our new tub. One important note is that the $1150ish the Big Deal gives you for materials is just not enough. Not Dave's fault, just worth knowing. It doesn't cover the more minor accessories. And even though we believe we were very, very good bargain hunters, we still spent just over $2000. We also picked up all of our own materials except the tub, which Dave picked up for us for a small delivery fee. Honestly, it may be a better deal to just contact Dave directly than use the Big Deal. I'm not sure we ended up saving any money at all... so basically it just means Dave lost whatever portion of our job that he would have normally earned had he not had to pay Angie's List their commission on the deal that I'm assuming he paid. The demo of our bathroom was quick, efficient, and fairly clean. All of the work appears to be well-done. The tiling is very nice, which is appreciated because I am pretty anal. A couple of the plumbing pieces needed to be tightened after everything was done. Dave dispatched people right away to fix the issue. There are a couple teensy things we tweaked ourselves (light switch panel missing a screw). But that's really being nit picky. Overall, the bathroom looks gorgeous and we are very satisfied. It is SO much nicer than our previous 20-yr-old bathroom. Dave's team was also very tolerant of my dog, who tends to bark when she hears loud noises in the other room. I would certainly recommend Dave and his team for your bathroom project.
Description of Work: Dave Lupfer and his team demolished our entire very old bathroom and re-built it from scratch. I bought the $5000 Angie's List deal and expected there to be significant additional costs, as our bathroom was old, our house is old, and we had no idea what to expect behind the walls. The total price was closer to $11,000, which was probably $2000-3000 more than I expected based on my own knowledge. But I do think Dave gave us fair pricing for everything. The actual demo work generally involved: ripping out bath/wall tiles and old plaster walls, ripping out floor tiles, removing the tub and related fixtues, removing an old window, taking out all old electrical hidden behind the walls, removing vanity and toilet, removing rotten subfloor. The remodel work generally involved: new electrical (including putting in an overhead light when previously we only had a light over the bathroom mirror), replacing the over-mirror light, installing new mirror/medicine cabinet, new plumbing, new sink/vanity, new toilet, new heating vent, installing a fan/vent from scratch, installing new window, installing new subfloor, re-installing wood trim around door, installing base trim on floor, tiling around the bathtub on walls and tiling on floor, hanging towel bars, shelf, toilet paper holder.

Thank you for your kind words! And your bathroom is now up to code and looks beautiful. Thanks for understanding that our job before you took longer than expected, mainly, because they kept adding projects. We never start a new job until we have completed our existing one. I dont want you to be with out a bathroom for one day longer than needed. I assume that explains the B for punctuality, because, once we start a project we are there everyday at 7:00 AM, and never miss a day, even worked some Saturdays. Also thanks for explaining the "Big Deal" bathroom promotion. Every bathroom is different, and the older the house, the more surprises are lurking behing the plaster and lathe.

The work went well, the only hitch was the owner coming to review the job and delaying the work in progress. However I was pleased that he came and reviewed the work.
Description of Work: Very Pleasant young man arrived on time. I showed him the skylight area which had been damaged during roofing and needed to be re-framed as well as several places on the ceiling which needed to be patched over protruding nails. He went to work promptly and said I needed to have some waterproofing around the skylight. He went out and bought the necessary materials and came back promptly. He applied the plaster as requested and while it was drying put plastic insulation over 6 of the 8 floor to ceiling windows. In the room. He could not apply the second layer of plaster or do 4 five-foot windows in the next room. When the owner came we discussed this time restriction and he agreed to have the worker come back the next day and finish the work at a discounted hourly price -- two hours was agreed upon. Somehow wires got crossed and no one came on Thursday but came on for the two hours on Friday instead.

Dave is responsive and professional. He was glad to have clear instructions from me regarding lighting, outlets, closets, door types, lighting styles, etc. He built exactly to our specifications and presented us with options when unforseen issues came up. The crew works hard, and the kept a VERY messy tear-out tidy and neat. We were impressed with how they removed all the old ceiling tiling, conduit, paneling, etc. from basement to bin through our finished kitchen without leaving a trace, let alone a scratch or two. Good job, they care about that stuff and that mattered to us. The workmanship was solid, clean. The project started and finished on time, they work daily, no disappearing acts, and Dave was present as much as we needed him to be, though we came to trust the guys on the crew to be on their own in our house without us present as well.
Description of Work: Tear out walls and ceiling existing basement living space. Install new lighting, walls, build out additional room (framing/finishing), fill in ceramic floor tile gaps to match, all new electricals. Lead on painter.

I hired Lupfer Builders through a Big Deal. They were very easy to work with to schedule work. They completed several miscellaneous projects: demolishing a shed, installing baseboard in one room, and repairing a ceramic tile border around my fireplace. All projects were done very professionally. Both the carpentry on the baseboard and the ceramic tile work were very high quality. In addition, it was easy to schedule work by email, and Lupfer showed up promptly when they said they would. My projects exceeded the time allotted in the original purchased package, but extra work was extremely well priced. I am happy to have connected with such a great contractor and will happily hire them for future projects.

They wanted to begin work every day at 7 am. I preferred 8. We compromised on 7:30 am. They arrived promptly every day, and were polite and cheerful. They worked carefully and neatly taking only a lunch break. They put down mats to protect my floors. They would work with the door of the bathroom closed so dust wouldn't get out into the rest of the house. They would keep me informed as to when the plumber would come and when the electrician would be installing the fan. They worked with my roofer who came to install the flashing around the roof vent for the exhaust fan. At the end of every day, they left the bathroom and the garage where they cut the tile as neat as possible. They were meticulous. Everything was installed flawlessly and neatly. The bathroom looks fantastic. I have 2 more bathrooms that need remodeling and I will have them do the work.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel including new fixtures and travertine tile which were an additional cost. They had to retile the tub enclosure to the ceiling; tile the floor and half way up the other 4 walls; replace the tub and tub faucets, the toilet, 2 sinks, and the sink faucets; sand, spackle, prime, and paint walls, ceiling, trim, door, and inside and outside of cabinets; install new sliding glass shower doors; install exhaust fans in 2 bathrooms.

The lamppost looks great, but it did not work. After talking to them, it turns out that they plugged it in to see if it works, but did not make sure that I would turn it on from the switch. It turned out to be light sensitive, so it turns on automatically at night. However, after they first installed it, it did not. They simply did not make sure that I had a way to turn it on, which I though was a pretty big oversight. No phone call or anything... so this required a separate trip. Another project they were working on, replacing the hose attachment in my bathroom, took a long time. After many trips to different supply stores, and many phone calls, they could not find the hose. This may be through no fault of theirs...perhaps it was just a difficult part to find, but it was disappointing to spend this much money just in the search to find the part with nothing to show for it. The threshold they installed looks good. I'd say overall, I wouldn't expect these things to cost so much. I just submitted an A review for work they did installing crown molding in my home. I absolutely would recommend them for that. It seems to be their strong suit.
Description of Work: Installed lamppost and created new concrete slab for it, searched for hose for bath but ended up capping it off instead, installed threshold.

Member, I am so sorry you were not 100% satisfied. You supplied us the post light, I just assumed that since you bought it, you knew it had a built in photocell. I came back, at no charge, to confirm it. Your replacement hose for the bath tub was frustrating, I took it to 5 different plumbing suppliers and spent a lot of time with phone calls and searching the internet. I did not charge you for the time. I did finally find a reasonable solution, at Northshore faucets in Morton Grove but the price was about $200 and you said to just cap it off. It was an older tub part, it was really hard to find. I really tried hard to find this part, spent a lot of time and leg work, used all my plumber and supplier contacts. So I am disappointed that you are not satisfied. As far as the price, you bought an Angies list "big deal", contractor for a day (8 hours) for $299, which is a great deal! And we worked an additional 4 hours at my standard rate of $55 per hour. Which I explained and is a fair rate. Thanks for your kind words on a separate job we did for you, Crown moulding, it really came out great And thank you for the A on quality of work

The crown molding looks great, and I appreciate all the time he spent with me in preparation.
Description of Work: Dave and his team installed and painted crown molding in three rooms. He came and sat with me, and gave me some options for types of crown molding. This part was a little difficult because the places he recommended had very little, or said they had very few options. I ended up finding the perfect one anyhow.

Thanks for the kind words, your crown molding looks great. I showed you the molding catalogue and some samples I keep in my truck, but sometimes its nice to go to the lumber yard and see the full size pieces. My apologies for Alberto at Standard lumber for not being very helpful. They are a local family owned business and typically very good. We purchased a new home and wanted to make several cosmetic modifications before moving in. From the beginning, Dave was very professional to work with. He came out personally to quote the job and was the first to respond with a detailed quote. Throughout the job, he was very good at communicating issues and very responsive. He even offered up suggestions regarding lighting and some repairs to consider, which we greatly appreciated and in most cases followed. His workers were also very professional, friendly and hardworking. They did a very good job of cleaning up and making sure things were out of the way even when they got stuck dealing with our dog on a couple occasions. The painting was no small task to say the least and they did a phenomenal job! The quality was exceptional and they worked very hard to get the job done on time. They slightly exceed our timeline, which wasn't surprising given the size of the job. They continued working until everything got done and did not cut any corners to get finished quicker. I would highly recommend them for any painting job. We asked them to do some miscellaneous tasks, some being added on as we went. All were done well and we had absolutely no complaints with any of these projects. We ran into some miscommunication on the hardwood floors and they needed to be redone. They contracted this part of the job out. We were not overly pleased with the response from the contractor who did the work, but Dave made sure it was corrected and tried to inconvenience us as little as possible to get it done. The final product was beautiful. We highly recommend Lupfer Builders and would definitely hire them again.

Dave was very professional and knowledgeable. He knew exactly what repairs needed to be done and suggested improvements that we are very pleased with. His workers are very skilled and work-horses - they get a lot done and do it right. No short cuts. They also had to fix a botched door installation that 2 contractors failed to get right - and he did. Installed a lighting fixture that was tricky and did the wiring - its beautiful. Dave is very concerned with his reputation and as a result, customers benefit! Highly recommend him, especially for complex jobs.

Hello Member, Thanks for your positive review. It was a challenge working through your village's permit process but in the end, we prevailed! Your hot tub turned out great, hope you enjoy it for many years. Sincerely, Dave Lupfer

The work was fine. Dave's crew did a nice job.The first project was the wine nook/closet. Dave and his crew recommended an alternate configuration which looked better. I wound up finishing the closet both to save cost and time (crew couldn't come back out for a couple of weeks). The second project was refinish walls in previously finished basement. The crew did a fine job. A few of the details could of been cleaner, but it is nothing readily noticeable. The real issue was the change in what was agreed to and the haggling of the price/cost of the job.I found that part annoying. In the end, Dave and I came to an agreement on the final bill. I went with Lupfer builders via the special deal on Angies List, but even that turned out to be considerably more than I thought. My feeling is that these projects were too small for Lupfer builders and therefore, cost/benefit ratio to them was too slim for them. Thus, the haggling. It might have been different if I had a large remodeling project. The "B" is the average for all the demensions.
Description of Work: 2 projects1) Build a nook for a wine rack. - Open up a wall to build a large nook to put a set of wine racks (about 100 bottles). Move a closet door. Re-arrange ceiling lighting.2) Replace two walls and re-wire basement for an entertainment set up. - Remove painted paneling and replace with drywall on two walls. - Change wiring both electrical and tv cables to set up for a new entertainment set-up. - Paint the entire basement and ceiling.

The guy that came to do an estimate seemed like a nice guy. The estimate was about $5000. He was good and he seemed like he knew what he was talking about. He was basically the first person who gave me an estimate for anything. The cost was expensive. It wasn't like I was comparing him against anybody or anything. I would probably use him in the future.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Lupfer Builders for some bathroom stuff.
