Process started November 3rd of 2021. The General Manager, Eli, came to the house and showed me all of the product offerings for a new entrance door with a sidelight and transom, a replacement window for the basement, and a specialty eyebrow window replacement in our master. I told Eli that I wanted one of the best doors they offer, to replace the builder grade door, and everything we are replacing needs to match the rest of the townhouses in our subdivision. Detailed quote was sent on the 17th. The quote included pictures of each item and the door showed the wrong transom window configuration. I was told that there was no picture option to show the transom configuration of 4 panes instead of 5 but he had taken pictures to insure the configuration will match with the existing door. I signed off on the paperwork and put down 30%. All three orders where custom, so the turnaround time was approximately 3 months and that also included some of there pandemic backups on supplies. In the months to follow I would receive a few automated emails a month on what to expect, manufacturing process, and what to do on the day of installation. The emails slowed down at the end of May and I finally reached out in April. The day I reached out they stated that everything was in and we set the installation date for April 26th. Opal workers arrived on time that morning and began the process. They started with removing all the old windows and door. As they unboxed the custom products I noticed that the door glass and eyebrow window glass were wrong. The basement window they were installing was considerably smaller than what they were replacing. I took pictures of everything and forwarded the information to there main office and received a fast response. I was told that the window inserts to make the configuration correct can be done after the install. The office manager looked at the picture on the quote for the door and stated that I signed off on 5 windows instead of 4 and I had to bring up the fact that there system had no pictured example of the 4 window layout but the General Manager guaranteed that all products would match the layout of the replacement. The basement window was installed and they used tons of foam and plywood to fill the gaps of where the old window was. I could hear the installers complaining after they unboxed the new window and initially put it in place because there was so much room on each side. If this was a custom measured window how come they installed a cookie cutter size that I could have bought at a big box store? The old window, without the frame, measured approximately 60 x 54 and the new window, without the frame, measured 48.5 x 48.5. This is the only window in the basement bringing in natural light. If this is a reasonable expectation then the sales team should have brought up the fact that replacement windows would be considerably smaller. If we were told this we would not have replaced the window at all. On top of the window being small you could see between the sliding glass as if there was no seals on the window at all. Air was coming in from the outside and there solution was to cut two pieces of thin molding in half, which did not close the gap. I was told that in order to fix everything it would take a couple months. I was not comfortable with paying the remainder of the $10,000. I wanted a guarantee that they would some how make this fix a priority, so we agreed to hold back $600. Two months turned into 5 months. The office manager called me once in that time frame and stated it would not be until September. It's now October and there has been no follow up. Maybe the $600 was less than what it would take to make the job right. For the first time in almost 20 years we have a gnat problem in the basement from that brand new Opal window. We would be better off just buying something to replace it. All in all there wasn't a single product that was right and the years of saving money to increase the value of our home was not what we were expecting. We will see if the pictures attached and review will get a response and then I can update it accordingly. I would be wiling to show pictures of the fixes and how there installers do there finishing work.

Replaced windows with Anderson 100 series windows as well as the siding on the house. Entire process was smooth and painless, Salesman was professional and not the typical high pressure usually found with window and siding companies. They weren't the cheapest bid but only slightly higher than the others. Overall, we are very happy with the job and feel that the quality of the workmanship and the professionalism of the company was worth the minimal price difference. I would hire again.

After a few quotes, hired Opal to replace our 10 windows with new-construction Beechworth fiberglass windows. Jason was very up-front and quickly responded to any questions I had. Work is in progress and they are doing a very professional job. A little pricier than I wanted, but happy with the crew and the job they are doing so far. Would definitely consider Opal for another project.
We chose Opal to replace all windows, doors, roof, trim work and gutters. After receiving several quotes we knew that Opal was the company we should go with. The other contractors were not as thorough in assessing our needs. Jason did a great job diagnosing some existing issues we had with water runoff and recommended solutions that the other contractors did not provide. Of the 4 proposals we received, Opal's pricing was not the lowest cost but if you want quality and professional work I highly recommend the Opal Team. For the entire project each team did a great job from start to finish. They cleaned the work areas daily and worked with hardly any disruption for the amount of work they were doing. Each team member from crew leaders to the support staff have been great to work with.

I was very happy with our siding project. Josh was very impressive in his detail to help design our project, and he also stuck with us to help secure money from our insurance company. We appreciated his efforts to meet with us numerous times to help secure money from our insurance company. Luke was a great project manager. He communicated to me on the progress of our project frequently and addressed any concerns about our project immediately. This made the walk through a piece of cake. Marcin did a fantastic job executing our project's plan. He addressed any attention to detail I raised and also on his own. I appreciated him working on Saturdays to help finish our project in a timely fashion especially with the crazy weather this year. I will definitely look to Opal for future projects for our home. I was especially happy with using Opal for the first time and having my expectations exceeded.

We decided to use Opal based on some of the homes we'd seen them work on in our area and our neighbors positive experience. Ryan Anderson is the project consultant. My wife and I really enjoyed working with Ryan and he was patient with us. He answered all of our questions and he worked with our insurance company to get the most for our hail claim. Things didn't go very well with the installation. We had a combination of two project managers: Voytec (owner) and Luke (newer). We thought since we had the owner overseeing our project, we'd be in good hands. Unfortunately, they were busy and not good at communicating. We had several problems during the course of, and after, the project. The biggest issue we had was with a stone wall we had installed on the front of the lower level. The brick layer who installed the stone damaged the porch and did poor quality work. We had other issues during installation, but the siding, roofing, and gutters were all installed very professionally. The mess left behind by the roofers was more than we expected. The damage and poor work done by the brick layer took a ridiculous ten months to correct. I had refused to pay the final thousand dollars owed until the problems were corrected and damage was repaired. I called and complained repeatedly. I also wrote many emails. One of the most frustrating things about calling Opal was the greeting that informed me that they "hold themselves to a higher standard." I don't believe this is the case. It was difficult to get anyone to help us with the repairs that were required. We would get an email requesting payment and then I'd inform them we were waiting on "punch list items" to be completed. We would then not hear from Opal for a while. No one wanted to take ownership of our project and get it taken care of. I had given up on them after about 6-8 months with no final repairs, but then they told me they would send someone out, again. Eventually all the work was done to our satisfaction. Although there is still some noticeable damage to our front porch concrete, we feel they did a pretty good job correcting the mistakes/damage. A couple months ago we had a piece of siding come loose on the side of the house. I called and they had it repaired within a couple weeks, which is reasonable. Overall we had a very negative experience. It was very stressful and frustrating. Corrin, the office manager, did apologize to me, but nothing can really make up for what we went through.

Thank you for your comments that the company will learn from. Ryan very much enjoyed working with as did the entire company! We hold ourselves to a higher standard by having bi-monthly meetings and learning from errors that can happen in our industry. But as you mentioned in the review, when you called for a siding service you were taken care of as soon as the weather allowed. You chose Opal because we told you we cared about your home and we do. As a result of the masonry experience, it confirmed Opal needs to stick with what we excel at: Siding, Windows, Roofing, Gutters and Doors. We offered Masonry service to your project to be more of a complete contractor for your home and as it turns out, it was difficult to facilitate. Please know we are indeed here for you. I am sorry to see the low rating, but your home does look amazing!

I contact Opal in mid-October of 2015 to see if they'd like to come out for an estimate on two windows. I was greeted with a pleasant staff member who spent a bit too long going through some details that weren't much concern to me. That said, they have very pleasant staff! I had an appointment for a gentleman to come out and give an estimate. On the day of the appointment, Opal called and had to cancel. They indicated their salesperson was "sick", but hoped to reschedule for a few days later. We had an appointment set for a few days later and Kate came out. Opal's process is a bit intrusive. This isn't the fault of the salesperson. Honestly, if I didn't have an overall bad experience, I would have just been mildly annoyed, but not complaining. Essentially, they spend 10-12 minutes interviewing you with questions to help their marketing (Why did you look for a home in Naperville, what factors influenced your decision to purchase, etc.). When (:) they politely respond to this, they'll say it is to serve their customers better. Kate then took about 45 minutes surveying the two windows. Pretty standard. Kate told me they have to visit again to provide the estimate. Again, not the fault of the salesperson. That said, this "tactic" (and please, it is a tactic, don't even argue) is frustrating to me. I'm busy. I don't want you to come out again so you can leverage the sale to its fullest (I don't imagine they use high pressure- just that friendly salesperson there again asking for your business). Service providers that require this are a waste of time to the consumer. We had another appointment set for the following Wednesday (1 week away). On Wednesday, Kate & I spoke 4 (!) times. Again, who has time for this? First she called to say she's sick (is this typical with their employees? Come on- I own a business and know how often people are sick overall). She wanted to reschedule. I was out of town the following days AND I took on another appointment from a separate contractor (separate job) that day knowing I needed to get home somewhat early. She agreed to keep the appointment. She called later, I didn't answer. She called again and I left a meeting to answer. She told me she'd have to check with her "guys" to see if they'd install only 2 windows. This fact was known when I made the first call- this was not new. I was explicit about this (thinking they might not be interested in coming out). At this point she said the quote should be around $3200 (I had previously stated I had a quote from Four Seasons at $2800). I told her this was ok- I'd prefer to do business with Opal. Kate called a 4th time to tell me she'd have to cancel the appointment. She said the installers told her they "thought" one of my windows was a "picture window" and they couldn't do my work. My synopsis: They wasted my time... on the phone initially, at my home, and later with the back & forth calls. Secondly, we've had quotes from them before. They MIGHT (?) have better quality, but the two quotes we've received (gutters and windows) were the highest of any vendor. My recommendation: If you want to spend a bit more to speak with pleasant people (they are all very pleasant- great manners, well spoken), do business with Opal. This way, their higher prices and lies won't sting as much as others! Oh... and please (!) do not call me to discuss. I've received this call before (we'll discount $150 off your purchase... "Oh, and would you consider modifying your review based on subsequent experiences?"
Description of Work: We've contacted Opal for gutters and windows in the past few years. The most recent contact (October 2015) came in regard to the replacement of two windows.

I am happy to respond to the unfair review that is full of inaccuracies! I have 2 issues with this review: Q:Why did you tell our office 3-4 windows when you truly had 2 windows to quote? Q: Why wouldn't you call the office and ask for a manager if an employee was performing poorly? Isn't this the natural flow of communication between consumer and business. I can fully admit Kate offered you a disservice and she will likely be let go from our team as a result of this review because this is not standard practice for Opal and in 12-years of business this is a first complaint on this issue. Had I known this nonsense was going on, it would have been fixed and resolved! But in this case, you chose not to let anyone know that your time was not being treated appropriately! We collect information on your project. We are not a DO ALL Jack-Of-All-Trades. We have a defined scope of work that is clearly lined out on our website. When this family called back into our office in October 16 of this year: This is the notes that we took in about your project: Brian called having issues with 3-4 windows in his home. It is one in the kitchen, a double casement in another room, and a picture window in the next. They are all wood windows and they are original to the home. He has exterior rotting and he is afraid that the pane is going to fall out of the window if it's not taken care of soon. They put this project off last year and in hindsight this was probably not the best idea. They understand our process and lead time (6-8 weeks from signing), however this will need to be done this year regardless of the weather. All of the other windows in the home have been updated with vinyl before they bought the home. They are not too concerned about matching the windows to the existing but they do know that they want an all white window. They do have one other quote but they want one more to compare. But here is some interesting history on your project: June 16, 2013 you called our office for a gutter and window quote. We sent Ryan out to meet you at your home on June 18, 2013. You were given a proposal in a timely manor. I have the proposal on file from 2013. It looks like the work was declined: "Homeowner will not respond to phone calls ad emails and when we finally did hear from you the "Opportunity was cancelled due to No work / No damage: Husband said they're not doing the work. 'We can live with it'" We give free estimates and offer our time and education freely knowing that we will only earn 1 of 4 projects. I can assure you getting a homeowner to give us a "yes" or a "no" is tiring work. Homeowners have no problem asking for a free quote when they want it, and then brushing us off as if our time in less valuable than their own. We are not a high-pressure remodeling company and all we can hope for is the same respect that we give to our homeowners. So, you can see that we might have been mis-led about the scope of work from the beginning. This happens to us often when we explain our scope of work over the phone: 3 or more windows, whole house of siding, whole roof....NO REPAIRS...but homeowners lure us out to their home anyway hoping that once we are there...we will just go ahead and bid the work anyway. This pigeon-holes us a contractor to find a way to politely decline the work in some way that won't upset the homeowner. We have been accused of "being too good for small jobs" so many times...there are handymen for smaller scopes of work and again...Opal is not a DO-ALL BE-ALL contractor. Opal has won local and national awards for our processes and procedure and doing what we do...well. Part of our sales process is yes, to interview you and NOT at all for marketing purposes but to make sure we are the right fit. Maybe your goal is just new glass for your windows...then we can recommend a glass glazier to you. The questions you listed on your negative review are very far off base: Our questions are: Have you budgeted for this project? What are the project's sore spots? Have you seen any quotes that you like so far? We are interested in your project and you are interviewing us at the same time we are interviewing you. Contracting is the 3rd complained about industry in Illinois and Opal is trying hard to please homeowner's desires of getting info but also not having their time wasted. We served you well in 2013 and you did not have this experience at all. As a business owner, I will address Kate. I am sorry you chose a online review to tell me of the issue and not a phone call so that I could make adjustments right away as our homeowner are very important to us

We have a very unique roof and most contractors I contacted did not even bother to return my call. Eli, our sales rep, was very patient and knowledgeable. Because of the uniqueness of the roof, Opal had to consult with GAF - the shingle manufacturer regarding installation. But Opal stuck with the job from start to finish, though I'm sure the roof intimidated the crew. The lady's at the office were very friendly and helpful too!

Initially we felt very confident and glad we chose them. The workers were great. There was one guy who spilled paint on our rug, went and used our towels to wipe it up and searched our house for paint thinner. He thought he could "hide" this from us. Even with my husband sitting in the kitchen monitoring. Very sneaky guy. We were offered to have the rug cleaned however no commercial cleaner would do this. so we took it as a loss and felt since their work had been great, we would just forgo the cost. THEN after we submitted the final check and fall/winter occurred, We noticed the columns on the front door area where the wood was replaced, was only 1/2 painted up the column. Does not even match. Also the chimney had one rotted wood that had not been done. Since it was getting cold out/winter, we opted to just send an email towards the end of winter to let them know. I never heard back from the owner. I called 3 times. No call back. So I sent an email to our contact guy and he said, no problem will take care of it in the spring. I thought all was well until I had to talk to the "male" owner!! He told me he was doing nothing more. I was a little taken by his comment and will admit, I got upset with how he talked to me. I told him it looks awful and needs completed. He then told me "If you think getting upset with me is going to make me change my mind, YOU are wrong!" He was arrogant, demeaning and verbally abusive towards me. If you use this company, we feel you will get your work done, however do not get anything told verbally. have everything written down.We do know another customer who is still trying to get things done. also DO NOT pay the bill until all has been done. If they tell you they will send someone out "later" don't believe it. We now have to hire out to have things fixed because he refuses to, since he did not like my attitude. r Now that's bad customer service!!

Response from Opal Enterprises Inc
[member name removed], Thank you for taking the time to review your experience with us. Opal did exactly what was on the signed and agreed upon contract. You contacted Opal 6-months AFTER your work was completed and essentially asked for more work that you insisted was on the original contract, but it simply wasn't. As far as the painting situation, I am again so sorry. As you know, we fired that painter because of your experience and I believe we reimbursed you for the loss. Let me double check on that!
