Tom is very respectful and professional. He returned my inquiry call and came to give an estimate. He described what would be necessary to complete the job. There were cracks along seams of my wall in the bathrooms from settling and a couple of spots where drywall had to be replaced from water damage. He suggested repairing these before painting. He and his painter completed the job in two consecutive days. The results are wonderful. One of the bathrooms is a bright orange, requiring a special primer and the color ended up very true to what it should be. Tom stayed true to the estimate. I would recommend Gizmo's Handyman Service without hesitation.
Description of Work: He painted two bathrooms after repairing drywall and re-taping in each. In addition he hung new towel racks and fixed a toilet.

The work they did was good, but they moved slow. I thought it was odd that they both needed to leave my home during the job to pick up screws at hardware store. It seems to me that one of them could have gone to the hardware store since I was paying $90 per hour. I did not say anything because they had everything torn up and it was too late to turn back. After the job was complete, I asked Tom to provide an estimate for 4 French Doors. He promised to have this by the following Monday. Monday came and no phone call. I called him. He promised again to have the estimate by the following Thursday. Thursday came and no phone call. I waited and called again. I told him I had to have the work done within the month or else I could not have the work done at all until Spring because of my work schedule. He promised to call back, but did not. Then after Christmas he sent an email apologizing and the excuse of "tis the season". This was very unprofessional - I would not use him.
Description of Work: Tom and his partner installed a Kohler By Pass Shower Door.

Response from Gizmo Home|Craft
COST OF THE JOB WAS $350, NOT $2000. WE CAME ON SATURDAY TO INSTALL THE SHOWER DOOR, THE SAME DOOR YOUR SPOUSE TRIED TO INSTALL AND COULD NOT. WHEN WE FIRST SPOKE, YOU TOLD ME YOU WERE DESPERATE TO HAVE THE DOOR INSTALLED RIGHT AWAY AND I CAME ON SATURDAY BECAUSE THAT WAS THE ONLY DAY I HAD AVAILABLE. I INSTALLED YOUR SHOWER DOOR AS WELL AND AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. THE MOUNTING SCREWS FOR THE WALL BRACKETS THAT YOU HAD WERE TOO SHORT, SO GOING TO THE STORE TO GET NEEDED ITEMS WAS NECESSARY. I DIDN'T FEEL IT WOULD HAVE BEEN APPROPRIATE TO LEAVE MY GUY AT YOUR HOUSE WITH NOTHING MORE TO DO. AS FAR AS THE QUOTE FOR THE FRENCH DOORS WERE CONCERNED, I HAD 3 LARGE JOBS I WAS WORKING ON, HENCE COMING TO YOUR HOUSE ON A SATURDAY, AND PROMISED THE COMPLETION OF THE 3 JOBS BEFORE CHRISTMAS. MY EXISTING CLIENTS AND THEIR PROJECTS ARE MY PRIORITY AND EVERYONE ELSE IS NEXT IN LINE. I AM SORRY YOU WERE UNHAPPY WITH YOUR PLACE. IN CONCLUSION, IF YOU WERE SO UNHAPPY WITH MY BUSINESS MANNER AND JOB SATISFACTION, WHY SO PERSISTENT WITH WANTING A QUOTE FOR YOUR FRENCH DOORS?

Very well. I called Tom on Friday to ask if he could do such a job, he said yes, I said I'd call back once I had purchased the new water heater. I called him the following Monday and had the luck of his schedule being open to do the work that afternoon. He stopped by once in the morning on route to another job to give me an assessment and estimate. He and his assistant came back at the agreed time that afternoon and did a great, clean, efficient job. The cost was just a bit over the estimated max of $350, which can be fairly attributed to parts AND the horrible job of hauling the old water heater up and out of the house. Seriously, water must have saturated the insulation or something because even after draining, the old unit was unbelievably, even dangerously, heavy. I'm happier for the holidays because I know I'm not in a bind with a faulty water heater, and I now have something much more energy efficient in place. I expect to hire Gizmo's again for a variety of jobs.
Description of Work: Installed new 50 gal hot water heater, and took away badly damaged old water heater. Also fixed a small leak in a pipe in that area discovered while Tom was estimating the job. This involved some plumbing of water and gas lines and SOME VERY HEAVY LIFTING AND LUGGING TO GET THAT OLD WATER HEATER out OF OUR HOUSE! Also, Tom ran a quick shopping errand for a few parts (necessary because the new heater was slightly taller than the old), so of my total of about $375, about $35 was parts. He bills, at this writing in December 2007, $90/hr for two men and they worked dedicatedly and efficiently and didn't waste my money. Also, he gave me the heads up that if it would save time and money on errands if I could go get the drip pan I wanted for underneath the heater ahead of time, they wouldn't have to do that errand on the clock. This worked out well for me because I had time that morning to take care of that small task.

Excellent craftsmanship and on-time work. Tom came back to touch up a few areas that we brought to his attention. He was very concerned that the painter (sub-contractor) has used a "flat" paint for the doors and had the painter redo all 6 of them in a semi-gloss at no charge to us.
Description of Work: Install and paint 6 door slabs, repair a door jamb, and paint a bedroom. Tom performed the door installations himself and hired a painter (sub-contractor).

Overall, the work went well. While it is never fun to deal with a kitchen remodel, it was easy to work with Waltom Builders. We had a shortened time frame to have the work completed, and Tom was able to start quickly. The work took approximately 7-8 weeks and the punch list was completed about 1-2 weeks after that. The work finished on schedule. The first part of the project went much quicker than the second part of the project. Part of this was due to the delay associated with cabinets arriving on site. Tom also scheduled an additional project during this period, which resulted in some additional delay in completing tasks. We felt like some attention to detail suffered while he was trying to manage the simultaneous projects. Generally, however, we were extremely pleased. Tom was punctual and courteous. He managed the general contractor aspect of coordinating multiple workers and additional deliveries very well. We would definitely hire Waltom Builders again.
Description of Work: Waltom Builders did a complete gut and remodel of our kitchen (with attached powder room) and master bedroom. The work included: structural work of lifting the second floor, electrical including low voltage under cabinet lighting, drywall installation and taping, custom shower base, tile work, granite countertops, glass shower enclosure, kitchen cabinet installation, and painting.

After being a bit unresponsive to e-mails and phone calls at first (he was on vacation), Tom proved to be tremendously responsive with great follow-up. He performed the work with a very high degree of professionalism (quality work, removal of trash, returning to get the job done right if something went wrong, etc.).

Our project was unusual in that we used TREX material, instead of just wood for our stairs. Waltom is an experienced TREX installer, and did an excellent job helping us design the look of the new stairs/railings, and installing based on our selected style.

Got Tom's reference from Angie's list. Called him, he answered the phone himself, came over and talked the project over. Once we had decided how to proceed, Tom emailed us a proposal, which we accepted. Work was done promptly and the quality is fantastic. Tom worked on the job himself with his assistant.
Description of Work: Tear down and rebuild the front stoop of the house, including decorative fencing on the roof. The original was built with wood and had deteriorated. Tom rebuilt it with composite material - should have a long and maintenance free life.

Wow, what a world of difference the solar light makes in the bathroom! The room is no longer dark during the day and it looks beautiful! I was very pleased with how smoothly the job went! The job was scheduled the same day that I requested, it was fast and there was no mess to clean! I was even overwhelmed that the price was cheaper than I expected!
Description of Work: Tom installed a large, round solar light in our upstairs bathroom. He had to center the light, and cut through the drywall and roofing. He had the job finished in less than two hours! I was expecting to have to paint the ceiling, but his cutting was perfect and there was no need to paint.

Tom and his team did a remarkable job! They were extremely nice, knowledgeable and thorough. The end result was a beautiful basement!Tom kept us informed of his progress, let us choose our options, and always cleaned up at the end of the day. There was never a mess. What impresses me most about Tom's work was his impressive wood work. He made an intricate ceiling with cross beams in one room, a built in arched area for our TV, and a detailed arched entryway into our rec room. He also added decorative wood panelings and chair rails! He used bull-nose corners which was also a wonderful added touch. We get a ton of compliments on our basement. I only wish the rest of my house was as nice!
Description of Work: Tom completely finished our 1400 SF basement including a media room, a workout room with French doors, recreation room, bar area with a sink and granite countertops, a kids crafts area and closets for storage. He also added a bathroom with a shower and slate flooring. There was no rough-in plumbing, and he had to drill the cement ground to add this. Tom also moved our furnace a bit to maximize usable space, and he moved several pipes to maximize ceiling height. I was impressed with Tom's layout plan as we had several other contractor estimates. His plan was the best, and at a great price!

Tom was extremely professional and very responsive. He was on site withing 24 hours of our first inquiry to assess the work and review the plans. He provided the association with an estimate within a few days. This was an extremely complicated job that required several meetings with the structural engineer. Tom went above and beyond to ensure that the porches were repaired to the engineer's specifications. He also worked closely with the engineer to coordinate modifications and details. The job did take quite a bit longer to complete than the time frame Tom originally mapped out. This was partially due to inclement weather, and also partially due to the complexity of the work. In the end, however, we were much more interested in getting high-quality work. And despite some cost overruns, Tom also stuck to his original price. Needless to say, the association was extremely pleased with the final result of the project.
Description of Work: Partial rebuilding and repair of existing exterior porch system for six-flat condo building. Scope of project entailed making numerous structural repairs and replacements; adding lateral bracing; partially replacing stairs; rebuilding handrails and spindles; and building new footings. The contractor worked with wood, steel, and concrete. This was a highly complex job that included close coordination with our structural engineer. Plans have been pre-approved by Chicago Department of Buildings and Permits. The porch build out passed city inspection without further revisions.

MY OVERALL EXPERIENCE WITH WALTOM BUILDERS WAS POOR. TOM DEBSKI WAS ON TIME FOR OUR MEETING AND ACCESSIBLE BY PHONE INITIALLY. I WAS CONTACTING HIM DURING A BUSY TIME OF THE YEAR (MAY), SO I HAVE SOME UNDERSTANDING THAT HE WAS BUSY. AFTER HIS INITIAL VISIT OUT TO MY HOME TO ASSESS THE PLANS AND SCOPE OF THE PROJECT, HE SAID HE WOULD WORK ON IT OVER THE WEEKEND AND HAVE AN ESTIMATE TO ME SOON. WEEKS WENT BY AND I NEVER HEARD FROM HIM. I CALLED HIM SEVERAL TIMES. IT TOOK HIM OVER A MONTH TO GET THE ESTIMATE TO ME AND RETURN MY ARTCHITECTURAL PLANS. THE ESTIMATE FOR MY DECK EXPANSION WAS: $35,350! I LAUGHED OUT LOUD AT THE THOUGHT OF SPENDING THIS MUCH MONEY ON A DECK. IF HE DIDN'T WANT TO DO THE JOB, HE COULD HAVE JUST SAID SO, BUT INSTEAD, HE GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE THAT WAS RIDICULOUS. MY DECK PROJECT WAS DONE BY ANOTHER COMPANY FOR THE COST OF HIS LUMBER ESTIMATE ALONE ($18,000). AMAZING. I HOPE HE FINDS BUSINESS ELSEWHERE WHO CAN AFFORD HIS SERVICES.
