Seemed very knowledgeable. Estimated $2000 to pull off stone and redo flashing. Price seemed high. Still deciding who to get work done by.

This is our third experience with Tom at Gizmo. He calls back right away. Shows up on time. Makes fair estimates and sticks by them. Does all work with high professionalism and courtesy. Best handyman experience we've had in 30 years.
Description of Work: Removed all shingles around a leaking skylight, replaced all flashing and re-shingled. Removed two skylights completely and re-roofed; inside house, sheet-rocked ceiling where skylights were removed. Mudded, taped, and painted ceiling so no evidence of previous skylights visible. Removed siding from house along a roof line, replaced flashing, replaced siding.

On the whole, an excellent job. The man knows his stuff and does the work well. When discussing the bay window leak he proposed removing the aluminum siding from the peak above the window and redoing the whole seam. I must admit that at first I thought this might be overkill, but when it had been removed and I saw the crappy job the original installers had done of flashing/sealing (no flashing at all, just dried out cracked caulk..) I saw that he knew what he was doing. This and the rest of the work was done properly and well. The price paid listed above includes labor and materials, except for the kitchen sink, faucets and drain hardware which I purchased myself. After calculating the total bill Mr. Debski deducted $100.00 as an Angie's List discount.
Description of Work: Removed an existing whole house fan and installed a folding attic stairway in it's place, including rebuilding ceiling, resizing hole, adding drywall and molding and finishing. Installed a new kitchen sink, disposal, faucets and attendant plumbing. Repaired a water leak at top of bay window, including removal of adjacent siding, making and installing aluminum flashing along whole width of bay, and replacement of siding. Installed electrical outlet and a light fixture on outside of garage wall abutting back porch/deck, including installation of conduit and wiring on inside garage wall. Power washed siding and gutters.

Based on my experience I would never use GIZMO'S services again.
Description of Work: I called Tom from GIZMO'S HANDYMAN SERVICES to come and check on a leak from a skylight. He didn't go up in the roof to see what is causing the leak. The resolution suggested was to replace the shingles around the skylight, put new shingles and other protective materials. The roof is just 4.5 years old and I was not suspecting that roof itself is causing the leak. I do have four such skylights and he suggested to do the same for all the four of them even though only one is leaking. He quoted 2500 + cost of material for replacing the shingles around all the four skylights and 1000 + cost of material in the repair is done on just the one which is leaking. I believe his charges are way over the limit. I called amother handyman service from Angie's List and the leak was taken care for $295.00.

THE RESOLUTION THAT WAS SUGGESTED, IN MY OPINION, WAS THE ONLY "RIGHT" WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM FOR A LONG LASTING RESULT. I FEEL I WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL AND ON TIME WITH OUR MEETING AND DID MY VERY BEST TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE FOR WHICH YOU CONTACTED ME FOR. I AM GLAD YOU WERE ABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM TO YOUR SATISFACTION. MAKE NO MISTAKE, WHAT YOU HAD DONE FOR $295 WAS NOT IN ANY COMPARISON, WHAT I WOULD HAVE GIVEN YOU FOR $2500. I WISH YOU LUCK, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

Job well done. Our large flat-screen TV is on the right wall for our furniture lay-out and all the wires and cables are hidden. He and his assistant arrived on time; organized and ready to work. To move the TV wires/cables in the walls and ceiling plus the TV bracket, and add an outlet cost $350.00. Replacement of ten circuit breakers and patching up the former site the TV hung at cost $250. From other estimates we received, that was a fair price. Another thing about Tom, he just seems like an honest guy. We got the sense that we could trust him. That in itself speaks volumes. To my fellow Angie's Listers: we got us a good one in Tom. His company name is "Gizmos".
Description of Work: Our Flat Screen TV needed to be moved to the opposite wall in our basement. Tom installed a new outlet; TV bracket; reworked the wiring and all the cables in the ceiling, and fished the cables and wires behind the new wall location; patched up the old wall; replaced 10 circuit breakers.

We have an outdoor elevator which is a "must" for getting my 95-year-old mother into/out of the house. Although this elevator is only 2.5 years old and is rated for outdoor use, the platform which moves her up and down has become very rusted and the metal is now uneven and is even peeling back in spots. I had hoped to have it scraped and epoxy painted by this company. However when Tom saw it, he stated that though he could indeed do what I asked, it would be a short-term fix only and he couldn't guarantee the long-term outcome. He advised that I contact the elevator company, send pictures, and request compensation and assistance with platform replacement. There was no charge for Tom's evaluation even in these high-gas times when he had to drive 20+ miles to get to us. So, I will call the elevator company but I told Tom that there are other projects we have and that we would certainly call him again.
Description of Work: No services performed. Company representative gave estimate but advised against repair as product requires extensive rehabbing and may be still under warranty. Company representative arrived on time for our appointment, was very courteous and helpful. Did not charge for coming to our home and giving estimate even though business is located 20+ miles away.

I am a Realtor in the Western suburbs and use Angie's List to find good contractors for my clients. My clients needed someone to remove drywall in a finished basement, replace missing foundation bolts and the replace/repair the drywall. Tom was courteous and pleasant to deal with. He promptly contacted my client and scheduled an appointment. I just heard back from my client and she was thrilled with the results. She said Tom was punctual and professional and did a great job. She would definitely use him again in the future.

Great! Will definitely use Tom again. He was very professional, knew exactly what he was doing and did a great job in installing the new doorbell that could have become a major project due to the location of the transformer. Will call Tom again when I have any issues that need to be fixed.
Description of Work: I needed to have a new light hung in my dining room and I called Tom out to give me a quote. He came the same day within an hour of my call. He gave me a rough quote and then I had him quote out a couple of other projects that needed to be done. He sent a formal quote to my e-mail later that day on the projects that we talked about. That other project was to fix my doorbell. He told me it could be an easy fix, if the transformer wasn't out but if the transformer was out he told me how much he would charge and that we would go from there. Turns out when he put in the new doorbell unit the transformer was out. Tom knew exactly where to look for the transformer. The transformer was buried in my ceiling underneath the drywall, and instead of cutting the drywall he cut the line closer to the front of my house and installed a new transformer.

One of the fascia boards at the peak of our two story house had blown off and been damaged. We also had some siding repairs to be done. When I called, Tom came out the same day to give us an estimate on the repairs. The estimate seemed reasonable and Tom took the time to explain exactly what they would do. We decided to go ahead with this company. They came out two days later to perform the repairs. Once again they were prompt and very professional. We were concerned about water that had been leaking into our garage every time it rained. Tom felt it was leaking in behind the siding and fixed the problem. We've had a dry garage ever since. The fascia repair looks good and we are very pleased with all the work done.

I called him and he answered, but he was at a job and asked if he could call me back. It was nice that he picked up and it didn't just go to voicemail. On leaving that job, he called me back as he said he would. Due to the location of where that job was it was very convenient for him to just come by my house immediately and so he did. This turned out to be more of a job than what it looked. He had to make several trips to his truck. He was able to fix the problem. He worked really hard. He was very professional. I very much appreciate that he seemed to really care about keeping my cost down.

Excellent. I received an estimate the same day that I called (on a Saturday) and the work was completed the following Thursday. Tom was a professional who instilled confidence. He knew what needed to be done and gave me an accurate estimate. I also had a few other small jobs besides my main issue of the leaking window and he was able to talk me through what needed to be done and give me an estimate. He was neat, on time and very personable. He will definitely be my first call if I need any additional work done.
Description of Work: Fixed a large palte glass window that was leaking at the bottom due to rotten trim and lack of a proper sill pitch. Replaced old wooden trim on front door unit and replaced with composit material. Trimmed front door as it was not seated correctly and was baning against the frame when it was closed. Primed all new trim that was replaced.

All work was done in a logical, orderly way. First was the canned lighting. The two man crew worked all day, with only a short lunch break. They were extremely neat and tidy. This could have proved to be a very messy job, but at the end of the day I had virtually nothing to clean up, and I couldn't believe how the lighting transformed the kitchen. Next was the hardwood floor finishing. Again, very professional crew - it took only about 5 hours total (with 2 days in between for drying time), and it looks just great. Then there was a break in the action so that I could buy tile and the dishwasher. When I called Tom and told him I had the rest of the supplies, he was out the next day. The dishwasher was about a half an inch too tall to fit under the countertop. Tom chisled out the ceramic tile directly underneath it, and this worked beautifully. Next was the backsplash. This took 2 days, (again, due to allowing the tile to set before grouting). It looks just beautiful, and the intricate cutting and pattern around the kitchen window is quite impressive.
Description of Work: Various work was performed. Installation of canned lighting in kitchen. Replacement of stove outlet, as well as all electrical outlets on first floor of my home. Repair of ceiling to make it paint ready. Stripping and refinishing hardwood floors in living room and dining room and replacing molding. Installation of undermount sink and new dishwasher (including all electrical and plumbing work for this). Installation of ceramic tile backsplash throughout kitchen.

Just great! After I had picked out the color of granite, the proper undermount sink and new faucet, Tom and his crew took the exact measurements and had the granite cut to order. All of this only took a few days. The day of the installation, Tom was supervising the work (as usual), to ensure I was completely satisfied with the work. I couldn't be happier! Please note: Tom Debski, the owner of Waltom Builders, is excellent at figuring out a way to get around any snag that comes up during the remodeling process. For example, the new stove that I purchased was lowered as far as it could go, but was still about one-half an inch higher than the granite countertop that had been installed! I panicked, but Tom calmly pulled the stove out and removed the ceramic tiles and the plywood underlayment just underneath the stove. This was not as easy as it sounds. He then pushed the stove back into place, and voila! It was a perfect fit!

Tom always answers his phone. He is prompt, does not over-promise, and has absolutely every possible tool in his truck, keeping runs to the hardware store to a minimum. Needless to say, we were thrilled to have the repairs finished before leaving for spring break. There was some follow-up drywall work that needed to be done after the damaged area was able to dry. It was performed on schedule approximately two weeks after we returned. We did not have to hunt him down, beg for completion, or settle for second-rate work. He is not cheap but the work is high quality and is done correctly the first time.
Description of Work: Tom was called to repair a roof leak. (We were leaving the country two days later and did not want to leave with water running into the family room through a skylight.) He was able to change his schedule in order to make the repairs which entailed removing and replacing about one-fifth of a cedar shake roof... not a small job. Old shakes and sub-material were removed, copper flashing was installed around the chimney and two skylights, and new cedar shakes were added. The finished product is beautifully done. All waste materials were cleared away. No mess to deal with.

Tom was eager to come and survey for the quote, discussed the project in detail and seemed able to do the job. However, we received no word back from him for a few weeks. When we called for an update, he said that he was having trouble getting the parts list for pricing. We spent an afternoon calling a lumber company and a home improvement store and got a pretty good ballpark of what the project would cost. Still no word back from Tom, 3 weeks later. We went with another contractor.
