They made what seemed like a daunting task seem like an easy fix. They quickly identified the problems and fixed these problems within 20 minutes.
Description of Work: We required some minor repairs with some lighting and wiring around the house, and decided to use Gizmo's after seeing them ranked highly on Angie's List. A crew of two gentlemen appeared and quickly fixed every single issue that we had; they were friendly and able to answer my questions. I would not hesitate to recommend them and will certainly use them again when the need arises.

Wrong caulk was used in the Master bath. This needed to be re-done two days later, which is a significant inconvenient when an individual works full time. I was very frustrated and disappointed as this could have been easily averted had the individual document exactly the materials required. In the end this was corrected, however the job should be done right the first time.
Description of Work: Workman came and did the estimate, took NO notes, which surprised me. However he did restate my project needs and repeated to me what I was requesting for work. Work requested was to Re-calk master bath Shower in white silicone caulk, and guest tub in second bathroom.

The installation went excellently- Tom and three assistants came to our house- on time. They made a base in the backyard for the generator. They then moved the generator (which came the previous day) to the base. One of the assistants was the gas expert- he finished hooking up the gas to the generator by noon or so. The other two were the electrical guys. They could not finish by evening (we have a complicated electrical box), so they came first thing the next morning and finished the job. Tom came back that afternoon and walked me through the operation of the generator. We tested it together several times, until I was comfortable. A rainstorm and power outage a week later (!) confirmed that the generator worked correctly- and confirmed my decision to buy one.
Description of Work: Install a backup electrical generator - 17kw Generac. Attach gas line to generator. Connect generator to a new electrical box. Connect new electrical box to house electrical box.. Test the system and show me how it works.

We contracted with a roofer to remove our back porch flat roof because it was quite old and water was leaking from the 2nd floor to the 1st floor from a door that opened out to the flat roof. We needed someone to remove 2 doors, the framework, and the threshold, and re-install a new door, frame and threshold after the roofer had completed his work. Finding someone who could handle this job was difficult because it was too small for a remodeling contractor. I contacted Tom, and he came out promptly to go over the requirements and provided a quote for a replacement door and labor. Since the roofer couldn't install the new roof until we had a break in the rain, Tom coordinated his schedule with the roofer to make sure they could work on the same day. This was a difficult job due to the age of our house (90 years), an inside wall that wasn't straight, and the need to coordinate the job with our roofer. Tom and his crew arrived before the roofer, removed the doors and frame, and returned in the afternoon to install the new door. Due to the age of the house, getting the door to fit properly was quite difficult, and required that Tom return a few days later to complete the job. When the old threshold was removed, Tom discovered that a piece of hardwood was missing under the threshold, and he even created a new one for us so we wouldn't have to contact a flooring contractor to repair the floor. The new door was installed beautifully, as was the new trim around the door. Tom is very professional and experienced, and we're very happy with the result.
Description of Work: Removed 2 old doors that opened to a second-floor flat roof, along with all trim, and reinstalled a new door, frame and trim.

Tom arrived 10 minutes earlier than the time stated which I appreciate. He surveyed the scene, brought in the mat and tools and started replacing the disposal. He was friendly and polite but did not talk over working. He was very professional and knowledgeable. He was finished in about 20 minutes and cleaned up afterward! Tom's price was fair, his work was great, and he was quick and gone. I was comfortable with him in my home. I would definitely call him again for service.

The price he charged was fair. He did a good job. He was ready to take away the tank with him and that was great. It was not pleasant to deal with him. However, he did the job well. I think he was expensive. He tried to get more out of me when he was here. He broke something in the house as well. He punched a hole in the wall and he did not tel me anything. Scheduling was a little bit of a problem. He made a hole in the stairs in the hall way. I did not want to use him again.
Description of Work: I used Gizmo's Handyman Services a long time ago. I have a Victorian tank and it had a giant oil tank which they removed. It was a really messy job. They were not just okay doing it but they were the only people I got to do this work.

Yes, it was a massy job! The only way to remove that tank was to cut it, and take it out in pieces. We did agree on a price prior to the job and I did not try to charge you more. I don't recall any issues with walls and any other surfaces. When I left the job you seemed very happy and satisfied with my work. If you are that unhappy why did you wait nearly 3 years to write this negative review?

Tom Debski (owner) gave a fair, upfront quote, based on a possible two-day job. Needed to pull out wallboard,shingles/flashing on roof (another potential cause) and check where leak coming from. Day of repair, Tom and crew arrived on time and got to work; providing periodic updates of what they were finding. Source of leak found and repaired. In addition, some shoddy workmanship performed by house builder was noticed by Tom and fixed without additional cost(as a goodwill gesture). Overall experience was outstanding. High degree of professionalism and straight-forward speak.Tom is a guy that I would trust again to do the job right and at a fair price. Highly recommended to those needing restoration, redecorating, electric, roofing and probably many other fix-it jobs.
Description of Work: Garage ceiling mold due to roof leak. Cause of leak not readily identified during the initial investigation/quote visit. Ants in master bathroom likely attributed to leak; in adjacent wall to roof joint. Repaired the roof leak; flashing degradation; rain flow changed to redirect water away from the brick wall, into gutter. Changed the ring seal in toilet and small leak found (no additional charge) as a solution to potential ant presence.

I had Tom come out to give me estimates on various projects around the house (two bathrooms, kitchen, mudroom). He was prompt in coming out for the estimates. I had specific requests for what I wanted estimates on, and he kept interjecting other suggestions that I didn't really care for. I should have taken that as a red flag. After a couple other estimates from other companies, I decided to go forward with the kitchen project with Gizmo's-mainly bc of the price and positive Angie's list reviews. When Tom called back, I told him that I wanted to just do the kitchen right now. He didn't seem interested and mentioned that without my going forward with all of the projects at once, he wouldn't profit off this. His response was completely unprofessional and really left a bad impression with me. It's very disappointing bc he had some high marks on Angie's list.

I can understand why they are upset with my pricing. I priced the job as if I was going to complete all of the phases of the job. I should have broken down the pricing to include a la cart pricing for the individual components, and a total price that would be discounted if I contracted to do all of the jobs at the same time. I have learned from this experience, and I will price things differently in the future.

Originally contacted Tom for basic electrical issues and bathroom ceiling fan replacement; however, the day he came out, several hours prior to his arrival, our water heater broke (and it was new within two years from the previous owner). Tom and his people were on time, pleasant and efficient. I understood that the fix on the water heater that day was a patch while we waited for a part to arrive, but the "patch" stopped working on a Sunday morning. Tom quickly returned to the house and demonstrated the quick repair technique, and returned several days later with the necessary part (which has worked perfectly ever since). Tom is professional, friendly and non-threatening, he usually answers the phone himself.. He quotes a price, and comes in at the price, no hidden charges. He is a true handyman, there is no job that he can't solve (or knows how to get it fixed). I will definitely use him in the future (frankly, I should have him on speed-dial).

My husband and I were extremely pleased and happy with the quality and efficiency of their work. Tom was quick to respond to my call, and and presented us with a timely estimate. The work was completed less than a week after my first contact. We found Tom to be exceptionally helpful, knowledgeable and responsive to questions. It was apparent , he worked well with his assistant. They were respectful, careful , timely and neat. In order to install the lights in our bathroom, they had to cut into our popcorn ceiling. We did not find a bit of debris when they were finished. They were flexible to work with and we believe the price for labor and parts was fair. We will definitely use their services again. We are making a list of jobs! Julie and Ken Geraghty 2 Pinecrest Court Bolingbrook, Illinois 60440

They were ridulous! They came out and I explained what I wanted, but they wanted to do a job that was thousands and thousands of dollars over that. They told me they would mail me a quote, but I never received it. They didn't even provide the estimate, so who knows what the service would have been like. They were incredibly responsive when I called them with my needs. They scheduled me to do the estimate within 2 days. When it was clear that I didn't want to do as much work as they wanted to do, they weren't interested.

Tom (the owner) was very easy to deal with. During our estimate he had provided suggestions in a consultative way not just providing a quote. Tom outlined in details the repair work to be done in the quote with the breakdown of the labor cost and provided receipts for the materials of the project both the initial quote and final receipt was emailed to us as requested. Overall Tom & team did an excellent job on what we had requested. They were all professional individuals and would highly recommend them for the work they have done.

Results are excellent. I can think of nothing negative to say about any aspect of Gizmo's work.
Description of Work: We sustained sewer backup damage in our basement in a remarkably intense storm, and were out of town at the time. We returned to find the wall-to-wall carpet in the finished portion of the basement thoroughly soaked, water on the floor of the unfinished parts, and that the water had soaked up into the old Celotex wall paneling in the finished parts and the drywall in the unfinished areas. There was a strong and unpleasant odor of mold and mold was easily visible in the lower portions of the walls. This necessitated removal of the carpet and of the interior walls to a height of two feet for the drywall and four feet, to a trim rail, in the finished part. The carpet was found to have been glued down to old asbestos tile which made it necessary to have hazmat specialists and mold remediation specialist do the removals. To do the repairs, the first person who came to mind was Tom Debski of Gizmo's. He has done work for us before and we have always been very happy with his work. Tom suggested that we use drywall, as the old Celotex panels are no longer made, and use a water and mold resistant fiberglass sheathed drywall instead of the regular kind. This was done quickly and the job was first rate. While this was being done, I mentioned to Tom that the old recessed tube lighting was very poor and we had been thinking about replacing it for some time, and asked that, as he is a licensed electrician, if he might be able to suggest an upgrade. He did so and as a result we had him remove the old lights and install modern 6" recessed can lights throughout the finished area and four dimmable 4" can lights over the bar along with two sconces in the previously very dark hallway between the furnace and laundry rooms which gives access to the finished area. The overall result was spectacular. I hesitate to put it this way, but the difference was like day and night. I was particulary impressed that Tom was able to replace a number of old acoustic ceiling tiles in the finished area to cover the places where the old lights were removed by taking identical but double thick tiles from the ceiling of an unfinished workroom and milling them down to the proper thickness, as this sort of tile is no longer available. We are having a friend of the family who is in the tile setting business put new vinyl composition on the floor (No more carpet!), and as soon as he is done Gizmo's will be coming back to replace the base moldings and other trim to complete the job. To conclude, we are again more than happy with all aspects of the work done by Gizmo's. He does very high quality work at a very reasonable price and we would not hesitate to hire him again for any sort of work necessary.
