Mikey and his team were just great. We had to coordinate this work to happen while we were in town (we currently live in another state). The team was so accommodating and Mikey left frequent voicemails with updates on their progress. They were always on time or early when meeting us at the house, and they were friendly and knowledgeable. The team just really seemed to want to please us and they just appear to enjoy doing a great job. The stain and finish look just as we wanted them to. Nice company to do business with.
Description of Work: Sanded and refinished hardwood floors in 6 rooms on first floor. We had previously had a wall removed and the replacement boards were not flush with the rest of the floor, which they fixed. They also repaired a few loose or squeaky boards and finished the floors with three coats of Swedish finish.

We initiated the process in March, with an appointment for an estimate. Mike arrived promptly and measured our areas. He also talked to me about material types and how the steps would have to be built out of solid, unfinished wood and stained to match. We had our estimate within three days. At that time we went through the process of locating samples of the pre-finished flooring so that we could choose the color. Mike's assistant, Jane, was a huge help with this. We put the project off until July so that we could obtain financing, and Mike was still very helpful in answering questions about the proposed project and estimate, even though the start date was several months in the future. When we were ready to go, Mike ordered our materials and told us when to expect them. There was an issue with the delivery of the materials--the company sent the wrong color--but Mike and Jane worked diligently to rectify the issue and ensure that the proper material color and the proper amount of material would be onsite. The estimated time for this project was one week. The project took two weeks, but that was mainly because the crew was called out of town for a family emergency. We had a crew of three men here to do the work, and they were committed to doing an excellent job! They were on time and very tidy with their tools and materials. Each evening they cleaned up all debris, and placed all tools under cover in a centralized location. This helped us to feel that our children would stay out of the materials and tools, and showed us that the crew cared about the safety of our family. Communication througout the project was excellent. If we had questions, they were immediately forwarded to Mike, and answered in a timely manner. The onsite crew was dedicated to perfection--even coming out early one day to mix up stain samples for the steps so that we could look at them before going off to work. Even after the job was finished, Mike and the crew were quick to respond to questions, and even came out to fix two areas of shoe moulding that were not properly sealed. We are thrilled with our floors, and pleased with the workmanship. We have recommended Wizard of Wood Floors to several of our friends, and will continue to do so. If we ever do any more wood flooring, we will call Mike first.

To start, I had to postpone the job for over a month and Jane (in the office) was very patient with me and my schedule. Once the job got going, it lasted 4 days and it went perfect. The first day the crew came in and removed all the old flooring. The next three days they spent installing the new wood floor. The installers were very careful and did a great job. This is exactly what we were looking for. Mike and his crew are the best.

The floors they sanded were fine but there was a problem with the floors they just recoated. They ruined the floors and they were dishonest about it. They put a coating down on the floors and it ended up having a reaction with the existing finish that was already on the floors. Their coating ended up bubbling. I had just bought the house and hadn't even moved in yet and they knew I had no idea what the floors had been washed with or previously finished with. The National Wood Floor Association says it was extremely negligent that they didn't do a few test areas on the floors. Wizard then said they would try to rebuff and reseal the floors. I had to leave my home so they could do this, it didn't work so they were going to try it a third time. There are now spots on my floors. They told me the thing to do would be to sand the floors. They told me I would have to pay them to sand the floors. Some of floors are very old and some of them are engineered floors that cannot be sanded again according to other professionals I have since had through.
Description of Work: They were refinishing my floors. Some of the floors they sanded and others they simply recoated.

Response from Wizard Of Wood Floors Ltd
When I arrived at the residence to estimate the work to be done I noted to the homeowner that the floors in the kitchen, eating area and stairs were badly worn; as well as the floors in the office and study where in terrible shape. Her request was to sand and finish the office and study; the kitchen, eating area floors and stairs were only to be recoated. At that time I explained to the homeowner that the floors which are only to be recoated may have a reaction to any cleaning solvents or contaminants because no one knew what had been used to coat and clean this floor. I fully explained that there may need to be additional work done if in fact there was a reaction and she agreed. She also stated that other companies cautioned her about the very same circumstance, so she was agreeable to that. After the floors were coated, there was a reaction with what was on the old floor and the new finish. As for the NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association) of which we are members, testing does not always produce consistent results. Since the floors were worn so badly in different areas of the floor the new finish reacted differently in different areas. This was hardly extreme negligence but further reason to resand not recoat. Since the homeowner only wanted to pay for a recoat instead of a resand, we tried to accommodate her needs by working with the recoat request which we stressed that there may need additional floor work done in case of a reaction. We went back to the residence at no charge and buffed and recoated the floor again reducing the reaction. She was still not content, at which time I explained to her that the floors really need to be resanded. She was expecting a perfect floor for the price of a recoat even after she was cautioned by multiple companies. I offered to resand the rooms absorbing her cost for the recoat. Instead, she got a quote from the most expensive floor contractor in Chicago to “chemically strip her hardwood floors.” Even though other floors are in no worse shape than what I started but actually better. It seems that she just wants to pay for a recoat when she really needs a resand, which she was cautioned along the way but did not want to take anyone’s advice. I have offered her a more that fair solution to correct the problem. Michael Galloway – President.

They arrived on time for the measuring and estimate. They returned and created four "sample" areas with various shades of stain for us to make our selection from. The work was done while we were away for 3 days. Upon return we had to open the house up to bring in fresh air. The Swedish finish, while less obnoxious smelling than alternatives, still created an intolerable smell in a house closed up tight for 24 hours after the job was completed. If we had it to do over we would have left instructions to vent the windows. After a couple days I noticed drip marks in various places. The company came out right away to sand and stain.

Mike and his crew were wonderful. I obtained bids from A grade companies, and Wizard of Wood came in the lowest. Mike was great to work with. I was nervous about how it would turn out since it was an expensive undertaking, but the floors look flawless and I couldn't be happier. Installer Wayne spent time with me looking at the different shade samples on the floor and was able to explain how each shade appears when on the entire floor. I love the shade that he helped me pick out. In addition, I had new railings and bannisters put in by another company, and Mike's crew worked with those installers by staining the wood needed for the staircase and having the stained items ready for them when they were ready for them. Mike and his crew were very professional.
Description of Work: They installed hardwood floors in foyer, hall closet, living room, dining room, kitchen, and on stairs and landings leading to lower and upper levels. They had to remove carpeting in LR, DR and on stairs, and remove old hardwood in kitchen, foyer and stairs and landing leading to lower level. They also stained the new bannisters I had installed.

We had a relatively unique situation. We needed a sump pump and drainage tiles put in our garden-unit condo. Our hardwood floors had been damaged from water coming up from under the foundation. I needed someone to remove a 2-foot perimeter of floor around most of my house, and then return to replace the flooring when the sump pump and tiles were installed, and also replace my kitchen and dining room floor with tile. Mike came out and did an estimate and was nice enough to do estimates for a number of scenarios (refinish with all wood, sand and refinish only, tile, etc.) He was knowledgeable and willing to answer all of our questions. We scheduled a day for them to come out and start - Pete came to the house to remove the flooring where the drainage tiles were going to be. He arrived on time and did a great clean-up job once the job was finished. I contacted the Wizard of Wood office to let him know that we needed to wait a week or two after the drainage tiles and sump pump were installed to replace the floor and I'd call him in a week. It was at this point I had a really hard time contacting anyone who could give me a time frame as to when they'd be able to return to finish the job. Unfortunately, I made many phone calls and got the same answer - "Mike will call you back later" - needless to say I wouldn't hear from him and I'd have to call the office back to follow up. This went on for over a week. This may have been a communication issue with the office staff and the workmen but it was frustrating and inconvenient. I needed to schedule alternative housing while the work was being done so it was crucial that I was able to nail down a schedule. I understand that delays happen, but its very unprofessional to tell a customer that you will call them back and then not call (I should not have to wait 2 days for a call...if you have a delay and don't know when you'll be able to schedule me, then tell me that - don't tell me you're going to call and then not call.) Once a time was scheduled for the work to be completed, Pete and another crew came out. They did a beautiful job (Pete even did a beautiful border in the floor of our living room - he's truly and artist). Additionally, their tile man Joe made our kitchen tiles look great! The communication issue was a bit frustrating but knowing that I'd still re-hire them for any additional floor work because they did such a great job.
Description of Work: Tore out floors where sump pump was to be put in. Then replaced floors and resanded/refinished. Also ripped out bad kitchen/dining room floor and replaced with tile.

Mike left a great first impression. He came to the house and convinced me of his knowledge and experience in this trade. They had trouble e-mailing a quotation and had to resort to using a fax. Their initial quotation was in error and was for re-finishing only, I had to wait a week for a correct quote that included the new flooring. By the time that they got me a quotation with the correct scope of work, I had lost at least a week and they could no longer meet my schedule. I asked how long they needed and they said 2 days, so I agreed to let them start work one week later than planned. I want Clear Grade and was told that no Northern Red Oak was locally in stock in Clear Grade, so I had to pay $800 extra for this "special" request. I requested that the flooring be delivered to my house to acclimate for at least 5 days which they did. The wood flooring had some strange black tar on it in a few minor spots, which didn't turn out to be an issue (but was something of concern). I did a rough quantity take off the wood delivered and realized that they did not have enough wood for the job. I called them and they double checked their numbers and agreed that they needed more wood flooring. They brought this missing wood flooring the day of the installation, so it didn't get to acclimate like the other wood. I confirmed their start and completion dates by calling them the week prior to the installation. They informed me that they now needed 4 days, not the 2 originally promised to get the job. I had carpet scheduled for installation on the 4th day, so the hardwood needed to be finished and cured by the 4th day. I made them have Mike call me directly to work it out. He called and assured me on Friday that they would work late on their first day, Monday, in order to complete the work either late Tuesday or early Wednesday. When their installers arrived on Monday, they claimed to have no knowledge of the schedule or the conversation that Mike and I had that Friday prior. Their installers stated that they couldn't finish until Thursday(4 days) or Friday(5 days after starting) and that they were not going to work late. In fact, they had to leave early the first day to make another personal appointment. I called their office (by the way Mike was never available except for the quotation and Friday phone call). Their office didn't know anything about the schedule or Mike's Friday assurances and they said I had to work it out with the installers myself. Only after I threatened to kick them off the job and have someone else perform the work after my move-in did they agree to completing the work on Wednesday, only one day late. Upon inspection of the final product, we found dark streaks from dark stain on their stain rags, and many chips in the wood that they never filled with filler. I even pointed out a few prior to their final coats, but they still didn't fill these.
Description of Work: They installed new hardwood flooring in living room and dining room. I wanted a true Northern Red Oak in a Clear Grade. Mike adequately explained the difference between northern red oak and just red oak, so I was impressed that he knew the business well. I had them quote one coat of stain and three coats of satin finish. Their installers tried to install only two coats of finish. They were to install new quarter-round shoe around the entire floor, but they didn't have the material and haven't ever called to schedule to complete the work. One other problem I couldn't mention below -- When they did the stain samples for our review, they used rags to rub the stain in the floor. They must have gotten the really dark stain on their rags and used the same rags to rub the final stain on the floor. The dark stain left on their rags left dark streaks on the floor in random spots when the dark stain on the rag was rubbed on the floor. There are multiple dark streaks on the final finish where you can see their finger swipes across multiple adjacent boards. Nothing else can explain this. It is right in front of the front door where everyone can see as the first thing entering the house, not to mention the other places throughout the floor where this also occurred.

Unfortunately it did not go very well. There were two main problems with the initial job. The first was that the level of the new oak floor left a large gap between the boards that did not match the gap on the existing floor. This was solved by simply sanding the new floor down to eliminate the wide gap, but this was not done during initial installation despite my wife raising the issue with the installer. The installer also could have done a better job of matching the wood at the doorway threshold where the new floor and old floor met. The old floor was mostly blond. The new floor was red oak, which included a mix of blond and pinkish planks. The installer selected the pinkish color planks to use at the junction. I view this as a lack of attention to detail. The second big problem was the finish on the old floor along the walls. The finish was applied using a different applicator and the result was a discoloration strip near the wall that was visibly different from the main part of the floor. The installer said the wood was discolored due to some past actions, but I thought the different application of the sealant resulted in a different thickness that caused the light to reflect differently. Due to the problems with the initial install, we insisted that WoW return and address the issues. This was a major hassle in that it required removing all of the living/dining room furniture a second time. WoW eventually returned and repaired the problems to the best of their ability. They sanded the new floor and refinished the entire floor. The results are satisfactory, but the whole experience has left a poor impression on me. My sense is that there are some communication issues between the WoW office manager/scheduler and the contractor who did the work. No one ever seemed to know what was going on; not sanding the new floor, bringing a urethane-based seal instead of the water-based seal, satin finish instead of semi-gloss, and scheduling were some of the points of confusion between the two.
Description of Work: We hired Wizard of Wood (WoW) to refinish the oak floors in our old (circa 1890) home and install a matching floor in a sunroom addition. WoW installed the new floor in the addition, including vent covers, sanded and refinished the existing floor in the main area using a water-based seal.

Response from Wizard Of Wood Floors Ltd
ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT SITUATIONS FOR A CONTRACTOR IS DEALING WITH A HOME PROJECT WHERE HUSBAND AND WIFE ARE NOT COMMUNICATING AND HAVE VERY DIFFERENT IDEAS INVOLVING HOW THE WORK SHOULD TURN OUT. HERE IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE. DURING THE WHOLE JOB, WIZARD OF WOOD NEVER DEALT WITH THE HUSBAND, WE DID NOT HEAR FROM HIM UNTIL AFTER THE JOB WAS COMPLETED TO HIS WIFE'S SATISFACTION. NOW THAT THE JOB IS COMPLETED AND PAID FOR, THE HUSBAND SENDS IN A TERRIBLE CRITIQUE OF OUR WORK AS IF HE WAS THERE EVERY STEP OF THE PROCESS. THERE IS A GOOD EXPLANATION FOR EVERY STEP THAT WAS TAKEN AND UNFORTUNATELY THE COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN DID NOT LIE BETWEEN WIZARD OF WOOD AND THE HOMEOWNER. THE COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN OCCURS BETWEEN THE HUSBAND AND WIFE. WHEN I WENT OUT TO DO THE INITIAL QUOTE, I MET WITH THE WIFE; HER HUSBAND WAS NOT THERE. WE DISCUSSED THAT SHE WANTED TO INSTALL A NEW OAK HARDWOOD FLOOR IN THE SUNROOM, BUT SHE WANTED IT TO MATCH THE EXISTING OAK FLOORS, WHICH WERE 100+ YEARS OLD. I EXPLAINED TO HER THAT THE OLD FLOORS WERE BEVELED-EDGE HARDWOOD THAT HAD BEEN SANDED MANY TIMES; IF WE INSTALLED THE NEW BEVELED-EDGE FLOORS, THE BEVELS WOULD BE VERY DIFFERENT. I ALSO EXPLAINED TO HER THAT A FLOOR THAT IS 100+ YEARS OLD WOULD BE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT IN COLOR THAN A BRAND NEW FLOOR. WHEN THE INSTALLER, ISMAEL (WHO HAS BEEN DOING FLOORS FOR 30 YRS. AND WORKED FOR US FOR 20 YRS.) SHOWED UP TO INSTALL THE FLOOR, HE SHOWED HER THE DIFFERENCE IN THE OLD AND NEW BEVELS AND EXPLAINED TO HER THAT THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE BEVELS CLOSER IN SIZE WOULD BE FOR US TO DEEPLY SAND THE NEW FLOOR THUS TAKING AWAY MANY YEARS OF THE FLOOR'S LIFE. SHE DECIDED NOT TO HAVE THIS DONE. SHE SAID THAT SINCE IT WAS A SEPARATE ROOM THAT THE DIFFERENT BEVELS WOULD BE OK. AS FAR AS THE HUSBAND COMMENTING ON THE “PINKISH” BOARDS BEING INSTALLED ONLY BY THE DOORWAY, THIS IS FALSE. "PINKISH" IS CHARACTERISTIC OF THIS TYPE OF OAK AND THESE WERE STRATEGICALLY PLACED THROUGHOUT THE FLOOR FOR CONSISTENCY. THIS HOWEVER IS A MOOT POINT BECAUSE IT WAS DISCUSSED WITH RACHEL THAT THIS PINKISH CAST WOULD BE "BLEACHED OUT" IN A FEW SHORT MONTHS FROM THE CONSTANT SUN EXPOSURE IN THE "SUNROOM." AS FOR THE UNINFORMED COMMENT ABOUT THE 2 FINISHES THAT WERE BROUGHT INITIALLY, THIS IS WHAT ACTUALLY OCCURRED. I GAVE HER AN OPTION TO USE 2 DIFFERENT FINISHES. ONE WAS AN OIL-BASED SWEDISH FINISH AND THE OTHER WAS A COMMERCIAL-GRADE WATER-BASED FINISH. WHEN THE FLOOR MECHANIC STARTED THE JOB, HE ASKED HER WHICH ONE SHE WANTED TO USE. THESE WERE BROUGHT TO INFORM HER SO THAT SHE COULD MAKE A DECISION. SHE CHOSE TO USE THE WATER-BASED FINISH. THE SECOND "BIG" PROBLEM THAT THE HUSBAND COMPLAINED ABOUT WAS THE FINISH ON THE FLOOR ALONG THE WALLS. INTERESTING THAT HE NEGLECTED TO NOTE THAT THE PAINTERS HAD SPRAYED A SOLVENT ON THE WALLS AND THIS SOLVENT ENDED UP ON THE FLOOR ALONG THE WALLS. THIS CAUSED A REACTION WITH THE FINISH. AFTER THE FIRST COAT HAD DRIED, WE REAPPLIED THE FINISH ALONG THE WALLS. WHEN THE NEXT COAT OF WATER-BASED FINISH WAS APPLIED TO THE FLOOR, IT AGAIN SEPARATED AWAY FROM THE WALL LINE AGAIN REACTING FROM THE SOLVENT THAT WAS APPLIED TO THE WALLS- MUCH LIKE HOW OIL AND WATER SEPARATE. OUR CREW WENT BACK AND REAPPLIED THE FINISH TO THE EDGE TO EVEN IT OUT. IT LOOKED MUCH BETTER AND THE WIFE SAID IT LOOKED GOOD. WE RECEIVED A CHECK FOR FINAL PAYMENT AND SHE HAD THE FURNITURE PUT BACK INTO THE ROOMS. WE DID NOT DEAL WITH HER HUSBAND UP TO THIS POINT. AFTER THE HUSBAND EVIDENTLY CAME BACK INTO TOWN, HE HAD A PROBLEM WITH HER FINAL DECISIONS FOR THE FLOOR WORK. HE THEN CONTACTED ME WITH HIS CONCERNS. I WENT OUT TO THE JOB SITE AND EXPLAINED ALL THAT WENT ON. SINCE THEY WERE NOT HAPPY, I AT NO EXTRA CHARGE RESANDED THE BACK SUNROOM AND REAPPLIED A NEW COAT OF FINISH OVER THE FLOOR, WHICH TOOK CARE OF THE REACTION PROBLEM BECAUSE NOW IT WAS SEALED. NOTE THAT THIS REACTION PROBLEM WAS NOT EVEN OUR FAULT. I ALSO SAID THAT I WOULD HELP THEM MOVE THE FURNITURE AT NO EXTRA CHARGE. I AM SHOCKED BY THE BAD REPORT THAT HE GAVE BECAUSE I WENT WAY OUT OF MY WAY TO MAKE HIM HAPPY. THE MAIN CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM WAS THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE HUSBAND AND WIFE- NOT WIZARD OF WOOD FLOORS. IT JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU THAT SOME PEOPLE JUST WANT TO BE MISERABLE NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU TRY TO MAKE THEM HAPPY.

I think that they did such a good job. I think also that the price was pretty much what he quoted, plus, he did some extra things without charging me. Such as taking out the old carpet. He is wonderful. He paid attention to detail. He was friendly and you could talk to him, he explained a lot about the whole process.
Description of Work: They came out and put in a whole new wood floor for me and steps.

I identified this company on the list and contacted them via phone. It took a few calls before I could get the appointment for an estimate arranged. At the agreed time Mike showed up promptly and met with my wife who was very pleased with his professionalism. We quickly received a written estimate and agreed it was the company we wanted to go with. My wife felt comfortable with Mike and I felt comfortable with the comments from the list. Both of us were pleased with the crew's work and cleanliness. Work was done on time and with a great result. Mike's team also helped to fix a problem on an existing floor which was burnt by flying embers from my fireplace. I was pleased this was done on the up and up, I have had been approached in the past from workmen to do this type of extra work in cash.
Description of Work: We had a wood floor extended into an adjacent room to replace a carpet.

Although I was impressed with Mike, I hired another contractor who was highly recommended by a friend and whose work I was able to see. His price was also lower. I would not hesitate to recommend Mike to any friends or acquaintances.
Description of Work: Mike was very responsive when I called for an estimate for my hardwood flooring project. He arrived at the appointment promptly and was very knowledgeable and professional. Great communication while I was waiting for his estimate, which was very detailed. The total estimate was $7,500.

My experience with this company was excellent. They performed to the letter of the contract. They gave me what I thought was a reasonable price for some extras. There was a small flaw and they came out the next day and took care of it. I am going to recommend them to a friend of ours.
Description of Work: They resurfaced my floors and did some repair work on the floor as well.

The whole the experience was real easy. They were priced the lowest out of the three quotes we received. They were on time, completed the work promptly. They cleaned up thoroughly and made sure the dust was contained as much as possible.
Description of Work: They refinished the living room hardwood floor.

A great company to work with. Even though they are not located close to us, they were able to schedule a date for an estimate and then another date to complete the work within a reasonable amount of time. The work was done quickly and efficiently. The job ended up being more involved then originally anticipated, but was still completed in one day. Everything was explained to me, and the job site was cleaned up very well afterwards. My floor repair looks amazing. I would not hestitate to recommend this company for a similar job, and will be using them in the future for all of my hardwood flooring installing/repairing needs.
Description of Work: Replace areas of water damaged floor boards and some subfloor.
