Wave Outdoors Landscape + Design

Overall, the project went well. I'm not very good at design as I'm a numbers person.... Mary was able to take what I wanted and translate it into design. She provided a lot of ideas and alternatives for me to choose from to arrive at a pretty cohesive and comfortable space. Our kitchen turned out better than we expected and we are very happy with how it looks. We're still finishing up the work in the family room but we are happy with the work that Mary has done with furnishings. She helped us narrow down a sofa that would work well for our very odd family room space, incorporated my favorite art work into the design of the room and selected tables that fit our unique style. Overall, we are happy with the current outcome.

The staff with "In-and-out design" have been extremely professional & very accommodating with my schedule. Mary DiCarlo provided me with cost details & photos of the proposed landscape design. She worked with me on moving forward with the pond design/landscape project which was completed this month (October). I was not in a position financially to landscape the entire property which had been my original plan. Mary kept in regular contact with me via email and phone. The completed pond area is absolutely wonderful & even more beautiful than I had imagined it would be. I would highly recommend "In-and-out design" to any one needing landscape or pond work. The quality of work done by this company is exceptional! And the staff is wonderful to work with.

Excellent. I chose one of 3 provided planting options in my primary work area. I was able to procure the plantings and planted myself. Excellent outcome! Additionally, I used one of the ideas provided for a backyard planting and will put other ideas to work in the spring. KS

It went very well, though we ended up making some changes and went with a different landscaper.

Mary is excellent and goes above and beyond to make yards look their best, even on a budget. Mary is 'hands-on' and steered us away from typical 'mow & blow' services while detailing our goals to installers. This was key to the success of getting rid of all our weeds and regaining a beautiful yard. We will definitely use her again as we set aside more budget to get improvements done to our yard in the future.

'The design process went smoothly Mary has a extensive knowledge of plants. She is very creative with her designs. She helped me work with my budget we were able to create a entire new front yard. I am already getting compliments from my and neighbors and friends. I can't wait to do my backyard next year.

We purchased a landscape design consultation and illustration on Angie's list from In & Out Design at the beginning of April. Mary(from In & Out Design) let us know the soonest appointment was on April 30th and while a 2 week wait was not optimal for us, we agreed to April 30th for the consultation. Mary did come as promised on the 30th and we started talking about our front yard landscape thoughts. Mary was happy to listen to our ideas and made some recommendations as well. She showed us pictures which helped paint the picture for us. At this time, Mary asked about our budget and timeline. At the end of the consultation, Mary asked us to wait a week or so for the preliminary design. (roughly May 7th) We asked at this time if she could give us a ballpark estimate of how much this would cost so we could move forward with the project (or not) and Mary said she could not give us an estimate at this time. On May 11th,(4 days later than promised) Mary sent us an email to touch base with us. She let us know that she was "super busy and didn't have much time for design work". She told she would have something for us within a few days. After 5 more days passed (more than 2 weeks after the consultation), we sent Mary an email asking for the illustration. We also asked for ballpark estimate again as we had no idea if we were looking at $3000, $5000 or $10,000 or more. Mary did respond to this email and gave us the preliminary design but no estimate. She let us know that once we committed to formal design for another $500, she should be able to give us a better idea of cost and a more specific design layout. Mary stopped by our home and picked up our check for $500 on May 22 and said she would have a formal design to us by May 31st. She also told us that we were looking at the 3rd week of June for installation and possibly sooner since it was a one day job. Since we paid the $500, she would set us up for that week. May 31st came and went and on June 8th, we finally called Mary and asked for the formal design(8 days after the promised date) and also to confirm the installation date as she promised us the 3rd week of June. When Mary called us back, she seemed "put out" that we called and said she was very very confused as to why we mentioned the 3rd week of June for installation. I reminded Mary that this was what was promised to us 3 weeks earlier. She said she was just finishing our design and would send it over. When I asked again for an estimate, she said that she normally does not provide one until after we have seen the formal design with the plants. I asked her to please send one anyway as we needed to know the cost. (or at least a ballpark) The design came the next day WELL over our budget. And, it was not itemized. One lump sum. We were both shocked and saddened that we wasted all this time (almost 2 months by now) and she was no where near what we could afford or discussed. And, we were even more shocked at how much money it would cost to landscape the front of our home. Mary even said she quotes all jobs passing along her cost on the plants (not retail). WOW! On June 12th, Mary sent an email to us to see if we had any questions....lol....where do we even begin! She offered to us to install the design in phases so as to save cost -or - we could do the work by ourselves - or - a combination of both. The problem is.....we couldn't begin to make an informed decision as we had no breakdown of cost for labor, plants, installation, mulch...etc... So, we decided to get another estimate. We took our plan (which was lovely) to a nearby nursery who has been in business since 1932. We showed them the design and explained we would like the plants in the design installed and needed an estimate. Within 3 hours (amazing!), we had a detailed estimate breaking down cost of plant (at full retail price) installation, labor, delivery, etc and the quote came in at 50% less than Mary's one line quote.....WOW! And, they could do the work within one week. We reached out to private landscaper at that time for another quote. We showed him the detailed list of all of the plants we wanted with no substituions. His quote came in even lower than the one above, although, it would be a few weeks before he could do the work. So, needless to say, we did not move forward with In & Out Design. Missed dates, promises and the lack of being able to provide some sort of estimate for the scope of work demonstrated to us that this was not the company we wanted to do business with.

Everything went very well. The project was started as scheduled and was finished on time and on budget with no additional costs. Mary, the designer, communicated well and kept us up to date. She was on site as needed and actually did the plant layout and planting. Mary did the design last fall but we had to wait for the excavated sewer ground to settle over the winter and the weather to warm up before starting work. The total project took just over two weeks after we gave the go ahead this spring. Almost half of that time was waiting for permit approval.

Mary is extremely personable and easy to work with. We had a complex, multiple stage interior redesign/remodel project that for us was overwhelming to organize. We signed up for an Angie's List Interior Decorating Deal, and had such a comfort level with her expertise, that we added further hourly consultation services. We worked with Mary from 11/1/14 through 3/24/15 which covered the multiple stages of the project. She very effectively coordinated our preferences with her recommendations to arrive at a joint direction for the project. She gave practical advice when making design selections. She was very accommodating in scheduling and responsive throughout the project for any questions. She is very knowledgeable on sourcing materials as well as having a network of contractors that she either uses with clients or can recommend based on client experience. She worked diligently for us and her services were very fairly priced. We are extremely pleased with the overall results in updating our home, and Mary contributed to the project success.

I purchased the Angie's List deal for a 2 hour design consultation for $199. Mary arrived right on time and was wonderful to work with. I had a variety of questions regarding the interior and exterior of my house. Mary helped me with all my questions including: providing color ideas for the outside of my house, suggestions on a new front door (she brought brochures as well as I had told her over the phone I was going to replace the door), and paint colors for my foyer. We then walked through each room on my first floor and Mary gave great advice on furniture arrangements, accessories, window treatments, and arranging bookshelves. She provided great detail including window treatment measurements, advice on how to hang the drapes, color suggestions, etc. She also provided some good tips on where I could purchase items that would not cost a fortune. She even followed up with me via email on some exterior painting ideas we had discussed. I was very happy with how much we got done in a 2 hour time frame. It was well worth the cost. I would love to work with Mary again.

Because of timing and pricing issue, we couldn't work on this project. However, my experience was very positive.

She is unable to do the work in the time frame that I need it done.

Mary came into my home. There are many projects to be done including 1) entry way new tile, 2) living room, dining room hardwood floor repair and refinishing, 3) kitchen painting. There is old wood trim on doors of bedrooms in hallway that has been painted poorly and will not match the new hardwood flooring. Mary looked at all projects and then made suggestions and guided me in the important aspects of each project and what to concentrate on as far as colors for each room and wood tones. She also suggested different options for a family room/basement remodel. I believe she saved me at least a week of footwork in looking at different options. Thanks Mary!

The whole process went very well from the start to the finish. Mary had her crew for my fireplace renovation and those guys did a fabulous job, including mounting my TV above the fireplace. The ledgestone looks amazing as well. She also had her painters come in and do all necessary drywall and trim repair before doing a superb job painting the two-story family room, powder room, loft and hallway. Mary and I went over the paint color ahead of time and when she thought another color would look better I followed her advice and she was right! My house looks like one of those places you'd see in a magazine now and I couldn't be happier about that.

Mary listened well and provided a design that more than met my needs. She was very responsive and our meetings were always scheduled when it was convenient for me. Both Mary and her landscaping partner were very professional. I love the results!

Mary was a consummate professional; friendly, knowledgeable, prompt and accommodating. Mary drove a considerable distance to come out to our home twice in order to complete the plan and even let us know that we should feel free to call her in the future if we had any other questions about the plan. I would recommend her services in a heartbeat,

We were very happy with the design Mary provided. She took in all of our requests (low maintenance, enhanced curb appeal, etc.) and also worked to try and incorporate some of our existing shrubs where possible. She also provided some very useful phasing ideas to help reduce the overall cost and effort and focus on the critical areas first.

After purchasing a deal we ended up hiring Mary to help us re-design our entire yard as well as solve some of our problems with our yard. She listened to all of our concerns and criteria and helped us find a design that truly suited our tastes and needs. Her presentation included 3D images of each side of the house and a plan with a legend and photos of every plant type to give us a good idea of exactly what the final installation will look like. She incorporated into the design our desire to have plants blooming at different intervals throughout the season to add interest. She also considered the appearance of the installation in the winter so that we felt confident we would enjoy the appearance of the installation year round. She helped us divide the project into more manageable phases and gave us guidance on the most cost effective method of installing those phases. She helped us select Unilock colors that were complimentary with our home and even brought samples to our home for us to review. The installation was completed very efficiently over just a few days. The Unilock was a quality installation and the plantings were all nice looking, healthy selections. One of the trees installed was our favorite type and was located in a very prominent location in the front of the house. It was also very visible from inside the house. The specimen that Mary was able to find for this tree perfectly matched the shape we were looking for which was a little unusual because we wanted the leaves of the tree to be a little transparent and not too dense. Mary was present during most of the actual installation and has been back since to assist us with minor things. She even suggested herself and replaced one hydrangea that was in great health when first installed but over the next couple of weeks was not flourishing as well as the rest of the plantings. She has been very easily accessible at all times via text, e-mail and phone for the questions we have had about the care of the plants. We are not naturally green thumbs and are learning how to properly care for our new plants and Mary has been extremely helpful and patient with us. We have installed three phases of a six phase project and will most definitely be hiring her to complete the next three phases over the next few years. Mary is very professional and very hard working and most definitely delivers a quality project. The numerous compliments from our neighbors can attest to that!

A week before the appointment, Mary from In&Out Design requested pics of any of my furniture to get an idea of my tastes and color preferences which I thought was great. She arrived promptly for the appointment and was very cordial. We walked through each room and she asked me what feel I wanted from each room. We did 4 bedrooms including master, guest, office, and grand-daughter's play room. We also did the kitchen, living room family room, halls, foyer, and garage. We didn't get to the laundry room or two of the bathrooms... mostly because I became overwhelmed at picking out colors... didn't think it would be so stressfull, but it was... Mary made it much easier and we got colors for all but the kitchen... more on that later. Within the next couple weeks I hired a painter to come in and do my whole house using the colors we picked together. The garage, living room, family room and 3 of the 4 bedrooms were perfect and she nailed it... I love the colors. As for the 1 bedroom (the office); I still hate the color (BJM Lemon Freeze)... I thought it would grow on me.. but it didn't... so i still have not repainted it and don't go in that room...I did decide to leave it as an accent color though by painting stripes... I wanted to feel energized in there, but not be scremed at! lol. Anyway, it was as much my fault on the color choice as I decided to take a risk... it was too much of one. As for the hallways and foyer... the color is nice, but a bit too light and not dramatic enough; I am already bored with it and looking to repaint it. when I have time and money. Regarding the B for Quality---Because we couldn't arrive at the kitchen color is the only reason I rated services a B for quality...we were dealing with ugly formica counter tops and a lot of wood; she was steering me toward color famiily of oranges and yellow, of which I did not want... I wanted some kind of green or turquois, which she said would not work with the counters. So Mary and I never selected a color for the kitchen. 2 weeks later, my niece came to visit for a few days. She helped me select a color for the kitchen and I absolutely love it... it is form of avocado green which looks awesome with the ugly counters... in fact they don't look quite as ugly as you don't notice them as much now, unless you stare at them. The color showcased my wood cabinets and it is perect... something I would have hoped Mary would have been able to do, but I think it needed somebody to be in there for a while to figure out a good color. If possible, I would give her an A-, but not an option. Another thing I need to mention is that I had Stanley Steamer there at the same time as Mary was, due to scheduling mistake on their part... Mary graciously worked around their numerous interruptions. In fact, I didn't check time, but believe she stayed longer than what she charged me for.... which was also very gracious. She also provided ideas for how I can arrange my furniture of which I applied as well. Mary was an absolute pleasure to work with and I would / probably will have her out again for more services as I felt super comfortable with and trusted her. She was pleaseant, kind, and knowledgeable about color and furniture layout... so definitely give her a try.

My house was in need of updating, and my attempts to organize the effort in prior years went nowhere. I knew I needed some help. Mary from In & Out Design called me back within an hour after I submitted some questions through Angie's List. And that was on a Sunday. I wanted granite kitchen countertops, a new backsplash, all new doors, new light fixtures, a new mailbox, new shutters, and other things that popped up along the way. My work schedule made it difficult to get over to the granite shop to look at examples. Mary understood my schedule and worked within those constraints. She met me at my house with the samples. Mary is responsive, kind, and got to know me and worked with me on materializing my wants. She also helped me steer clear of potential mistakes. Thanks to Mary, I finally have an updated house.

They did a great job. It was fun watching the transformation.

I was really happy with the experience - in the 2 hours that Mary spent at my new home, we talked through paint colors for every room, color flow throughout the house, furniture layout, window treatment options, color for the wood floor that we'll be resurfacing, what to do about an old-out dated fireplace, and various other random questions I had. I have since started painting, and am extremely pleased with how it is turning out. I love all the colors we chose thus far, and am really looking forward to seeing the finished product. She was also able to recommend someone for resurfacing the hardwood floors, and someone for the window coverings.

Our experience with Mary was excellent. She came on time and went straight to business. She was very knowledgable and patient with our multiple questions. She took each room of our condo into consideration and we discussed colors, draperies, art work, etc, for each of the rooms in our condo. She gave us answers for things that we have been trying to find solutions for months. I really enjoyed watching her at work. I will definitely recommend her.

We would definitely use Mary again and recommend her to our friends!
