Tony saved us from a disaster. We purchased a home that had terrible problems from the foundation, no insulation and the floors were being held up with tree trunks. Tony and his crew did an excellent job and we now have a beautiful home. Once all of the repairs were done we had the home appraised and it is valued over $50,000 more than we spent on the home purchase and the repairs. If you have lots of issues hire Tony. He is honest and comes back quickly if there are any issues that need to be addressed.

Mr Loizzo(Tony) managed my project from beginning to end. He is a great problem solver and has amazing insight on how to bring the project to a successful completion. The work was started on the agreed upon date and the workers were really polite and accommodating. Tony took charge of the project and acted like it was his own home. It was a super experience. I felt at ease as if I'd known him all my life. Amongst other things, they had to install and 8ft French Door leading on to my deck....they came across a problem with the existing sill being buckled and uneven. Normally this situation would cause delay and a lot of extra costs, Shardon builders did what they had to do to replace the stone sill and make my experience seamless! I would highly recommend this company to all my friends and relatives. The project came in on time and within the estimated cost. I was totally pleased with the workers attitude and how they actually enjoyed working...even cleaning up after every task. I have a kitchen and bath to remodel, and after this experience this company will definitely get the job!

I am an architect in the Chicago area, and we have used Shardon Builders on about eight projects over the past ten years, in the Northshore, the Western suburbs and in Chicago. They have been a very professional organization to work with. The work has ranged from small renovations, to additions to very complex new homes. All of these projects have integrated various levels of sustainable work into them. The mechanical systems in particular are generally quite elaborate. Shardon Builders has been able to follow our construction documents carefully and not deviate from them. If they have a concern, they discuss it with us prior to executing the work so the owner, the architect and the contractor are all on the same page. They do not deviate from them unless they review the specific issue with us first and it is reviewed and approved by the owner. Overall, Tony Loizzo, president of Shardon Builders, is very personable to work with. Their pricing has been very fair and a great value considering the high quality of the work. Their paperwork is done very professionally. I would say that Shardon produces the most detailed construction bids we have seen. They also execute sworn statements and waivers of lien that are clear and concise, which makes our review process that much easier. While 'clean' is a relative word during construction, we have been impressed with how they keep their job sites in tidy condition. Pleasing our clients and getting their projects built the way we intended are our two most important goals. Shardon has had a great track record over the years in accomplishing this. I have been very pleased with their work over the years and would not hesitate in recommending Shardon Builders for work of any complexity.
Description of Work: Architect Endorses Excellent General Contractor
We contacted Shardon Builders along with two other general contractors and requested a bid for remodeling our home based on the plans of our architect. We were very impressed with Shardon Builders from the start. The bid they provided was itemized in a very detailed, professional manner which inspired confidence, and the prices seemed in line with what we were expecting. . We also contacted references and saw first hand some of the work Shardon Builders had done. One home owner described Tony as a master craftsman. We carefully analyzed all the information we had and decided to go with Shardon Builders for our project. We are very happy we did. Our remodeling project was quite extensive, and it involved almost the whole first floor of our home as well as two of the bedrooms upstairs and the master bath room. Our project took about 5 months to complete. Tony staged the project very well. As soon as one phase of the project was completed, the next group of workers appeared. I think the only days we did not have someone actively working on the project were Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. I even remember Tony staying late to work with us the night before Thanksgiving to decide on lighting. There was absolutely no wasted time on the project. The workers were neat and cleaned up each night before they left. Tony seems to have a great working relationship with his subcontractors. Tony worked well with us as well. He followed the plans of our architect and even offered additional suggestions. Tony is a master craftsman when it comes to woodworking. His suggestions for things like crown molding, base boards, and French doors added a lot to the beauty of our home. He really strives to get every detail just right. We are very pleased with the results of the project. People, especially those that know something about the building trades, often comment on the beauty and quality of the workmanship. Tony also stands behind his work. He made sure we were completely happy with everything. We highly recommend Shardon Builders.
Description of Work: Shardon Builders did a major remodeling job on our home. Our first floor was completely rearranged, and this involved the dining room, kitchen, powder room, laundry room, mud room, and family room. Two upstairs bedrooms and the master bath were also remodeled. The remodeling was quite extensive and involved such things as drywall, cabinetry, wood flooring, tile, plumbing, electrical, woodworking, and painting, We had all the windows and doors replaced. We also added a high efficiency furnace and water heater.

From my initial consultation with Tony, to the start and completion of my project, the overall handling of my job went flawless and everything was completed on time. A beautiful job done. I am very happy with the outcome.

They finished the project in about 9-12 months, but they did not honor their written warranty on the master bath/shower tile installation. It ended up costing me several thousands of dollars out of my own pocket to totally redo the shower floor tiles, the bench and the curb. We also had to properly seal the tile including the ceiling and wall tile. I provided step by step instructions with specifics from the North American Tile Council on how to build a shower floor pan and these were completely ignored by the owner of Shardon Builders, Inc. Tony Loizzo and his employee, Urek, who did the installation. The mistakes that his employee made: 1.) He blocked the holes of the shower drain weep holes with silicon. 2.) He used the wrong cement mix for the type of natural stone tile we were installing on the floor; which further caused a drainage problem and also caused the natural stone to become permanently discolored. 3.) When we replaced the defective workmanship, we no longer could match the ceiling tile and needed to purchase all new tile for the floor as well. We have mismatched tile in our shower as a result. 4.) His employee used the improper for the natural stone tile throughout the shower. 5.) He did not seal the perimeter of the walls, ceiling and floor. 6.) He either measured the tile incorrectly or some mysteriously disappeared. Had he not incorrectly measured the tile or if they had not mysteriously disappeared under his watch, we would have had enough at the end of the project so that it would not have been mismatched. We thought the contract price was initially fair, however, due to the errors made; the price is no longer fair because we had to go through months of aggravation and had to spend a lot of extra money. I gave him significant opportunities to have him bring in other contractors of his choosing to correct the problem. However, none of them ever quoted the project with proper detail to convince me they knew what they were doing. Even with the day to day supervision of the owner, Urek nor Tony, brought to our attention that the tile was delivered in 3 different dye lots of the same tile. This was caused by the owner's oversight in making sure that the initial order was placed with the correct square footage. He did make partial payments to reimburse me for approximately 1/2 of the total costs of the correction to the shower installation. I accepted 5 postdated checks of $500 and 1 check of $250; to date they have all cleared.
Description of Work: We hired Shardon Builders, Inc for a total bathroom remodel approximately back in February of 2011.

I really did not like the fact that they were very, very, very late. I think they got busy with another job and there was this period of a couple of months when they basically did nothing. They would send one guy to bang a little bit occasionally. I know they just got busy with another job and just couldn't handle our job along with it. They also made some incredible errors working with the architect so we lost 1-2 months. They thought they had an idea and it didn't pass inspection, so that is a big factor in my rating, too. I would never use them again.

Response from Shardon Builders Inc
With regard to these comments, we would like to respond as follows. Older homes were often built before building codes were in place to standardize construction, as was the case in this home built in 1880. This caused quite a few surprises for the architect, structural engineer, and SBI as construction began. Consequently, the project incurred several significant delays to compensate for these unanticipated challenges. This situation is fairly common in working on older homes. For example, once we removed the sub floor in the attic to expose the existing floor joists, the exposed structure was different than the drawings from the structural engineer, so we had to have the engineer revise the method in which the new floor joists could be attached to the existing structure. In another example, at mid-project, building inspectors for the village ordered a change to the blueprint that they had previously approved. The structural engineer was required to add columns and steel beams to safely support the attic. This required new drawings and approval from the local building and zoning department. The beams then had to be fabricated and installed, a time-consuming mid-project change. Renovation and remodeling are always stressful and frustrating for the homeowners. We understand their need to move on with their lives and enjoy their new construction, but this project was uniquely challenged and took longer than anticipated. This project faced many changes, re-writes, and subsequent delays, none of which were caused by SBI. Sound construction is our number one priority, even if delays are necessary to satisfy the standards we maintain that are meant to protect the safety of the homeowner. We had many challenges to the project, all of which were handled successfully and professionally, given the circumstances of the age of the home. (Changes involving structural engineering conflicts especially are always time-consuming.) We are surprised at these comments as the outcome was quite nice given all the setbacks. The homeowner seemed pleased at the time of completion. We maintain an extensive list of extremely happy homeowners who are glad to provide recommendations to any perspective customer. We have worked primarily on the North Shore for over two decades and have many repeat customers. Please feel free to ask for our references. Anthony Loizzo President
From the initial contact to the completed job, the service and quality of work was exceptional! My phone calls were promptly returned, a project manager checked in every day, staff was on time every morning and work was done every day for five-six days a week until job was completed, taking about 4 months. Estimates and change orders were fairly priced and very detailed. The workmanship was fantastic, creative ideas flowed freely, work was completed in a timely manner. I did not have great expectations after suffering poor workmanship in the past with other contractors, but SHARDON BUILDERS was amazing. No one else will ever touch my house again except for them!
