Went well, all things considered. Only real hitch came in flashing out one skylight where manufacturer had discontinued product used some 30 years before. With a little creative engineering the crew leader and I worked out a way to use the new skylight's trim kit to finish the job while re-using parts from the old trim kit where necessary. Worked out just fine & ought to last another 30+ years!

For the gutter guard project, Peterson came and went so quick I was not aware they had already finished the job until the invoice arrived.
Description of Work: Peterson Roofing cleaned a clogged downspout and installed gutter guards on the gutters that did not already have them (about half of the house). Previously, Peterson replaced a leaking skylight during cold, snowy weather conditions. And prior to that, Peterson stopped a roofing leak that several other roofers could not.

They were excellent. They were punctual, clean, and cleaned up after themselves. They were just very, very good to us. If any issues arose, particularly Mike Chowder from the roofing area, he came back and got up on the roof and looked at things. Their follow up was excellent. They're really, really good. Peterson Roofing also has attic insulation. Their estimator was terribly unprofessional. So we didn't use them. Their numbers were way too high. I think the guy needed more training. Their siding and gutters were perfect. We would certainly go back to them for anything else we need except attic insulation. We recommend them to other people.
Description of Work: We used Peterson Roofing. We've had them do our roofing, gutters, and siding over the last two to three years. First was the roof then the gutters, and then the siding. The siding was $10,670.

It went okay. They were on time and the guy was pretty direct. He was honest and said that it doesn't look like I really need any work done. He said that if he looked in detail to find if something was wrong, then that would not be an estimate but an examination. He said that if I wanted to, I can replace the gutter. I had some draining issues but it turned out there was a nest in the gutter and that was clogging the water. Once the nest was cleared, the water flowed so I did not need any services. The guy was friendly and honest.

From their quote to the completion of this project their professionalism was outstanding. Other roofing companies that we requested quotes from did not even mention that we only had one roof and could install this roof over the original. They also had an awful lot of potential add ons, including the charges for permits etc.. Peterson gave us a quote that was the bottom line, no if we have to do this it will be an additional.... Peterson roofing included pictures with the quote, and the completed job. They had the manufacturers rep with them when they came out for the initial inspection for the quote, and when the job was completed. They do business the way it used to be done, professionally, thoroughly and honestly. Don't look any further!

Paul came out to the house and did an estimate and we discussed the tight timeline that I had to get the work completed. He assured me it was a four day project, 5 at the outside. They would start on the following Monday, giving them a full 5 days to do the work. We discussed several times in person and over the phone the color choices for siding, the corners of the house, and the colors to be used for a two-story bay window bump out on the front of the house. I requested that the "corners" within the bay window be the same color as the main siding so that those "corners" were not in contrast to the rest of the house. The regular corners of the house were requested to be white. Paul called the Friday before they were to start to tell me they were going to start a day late, but again assured me that they would get the job done by end of day the following Friday, essentially still on time. I requested that they do the front of the house first as it was critical that at least the front of the house be completed by the end of the day Thursday. I had landscaping contractors that had to get in on Friday to complete other work. He told me no problem. The materials were delivered on Tuesday morning, and work commenced later that day. The three man crew came from somewhere in the Chicago city, not a local crew. They spoke very little English. They worked slowly and did not start on the front of the house. By Thursday morning, no work had even begun on the front of the house, so I went home early from work and talked with the crew. They said the front was not started because they did not have the materials they needed to do the job. I called Paul and informed him of this, which he rejected as nonsense. He wrote the contract, ordered the materials, and they absolutely had what they needed. I had to cancel and postpone all landscaping work as the job was now far from finished. On Friday morning around 9am the crew informed my wife that they still did not have the materials for the front. I called Peterson and left a message for the owner, Jim Peterson, and was told he would call me as soon as he was out of a meeting. He did not call me back. Instead, Paul called me back and told me he was personally going to pick up the materials. At 12:30pm I was told by my wife that they were putting up the wrong color "corners" on the bay window. I called again to ask to speak with Jim Peterson. I was told he was not available. Instead, Cathy (their insurance specialist) called me from her home to try to help. She stated that the manufacturer of the siding did not make bay window corners in a matching color to my main siding and my only choice was white. I said that was not what we agreed to in the beginning and she said I signed a contract stating that the corners on the house would be white. At 3pm I was told by my wife that the crew had informed her they were leaving and the scaffolding and partially completed front would be left as is over the weekend. We had a graduation party scheduled for the following day, hence the deadline to get the front completed. Called for Jim Peterson again, again no phone call back. Instead, Mike in the office agreed to call the crew chief to come out to the house. I left work early (again) and met him at the house. This appeared to be his first and only visit to the house. He did make the crew stay and complete the front and take the scaffolding down on the front of the house at least, and he did fix one thing that I requested, which was very nice of him. The bay window corners were indeed white, and Paul showed up and tried to say again to me that I had signed a contract for white corners, but I reminded him that we had discussed the bay window in details at least 6 times and he agreed that he remembered our earlier conversations. The following Monday I called the siding manufacturer (Royal Woodland in Canada) and they were kind enough to disturb one of their engineers on a national holiday to ask about alternatives to white for the bay window corners. They gave me instructions for three different ways to get bay window corners that would match the rest of the siding. I gave that info to Cathy at Peterson. She called later in the day to say that they decided on one of those approached and they would need $550 additional money for labor from me to fix THEIR mistake, again stating that I had signed the contract for white corners. I reviewed the one page, hand written contract. The only mention of corners were the 90 degree corners for the rest of the house. Bay wind corners are NOT 90 degree corners. Nothing was on the contract for the bay windows at all. That was why the materials were never ordered: Paul never put the bay window materials on the contract. When I pointed this out to Cathy she agreed that they would pay to fix the problem with no charge to me, but it would take at least two to three weeks before they could start and they wanted me to sign a contract completion form right away for the entire job so they could get paid (before they actually finished the work). I really could not wait another three or more weeks - I had landscaping plants that HAD to be planted ASAP, so I suggested a compromise of Peterson giving me a credit and I would reluctantly keep the white corners on the bay windows. Cathy agreed but only offered a $500 credit which was less than the labor charge alone that it would have cost them if I had pushed for the replacement corners. Not a win-win by a long shot. Now the real problems start. I had paid Peterson my insurance deductible and 50% of the project out of my own pocket at the start of the job. The insurance company check had been send to my mortgage company and they were sending it back to me a third at a time. I got the final third on a Friday just under 4 weeks after the job was complete, and Jim Peterson suddenly calls me the following Monday morning demanding payment and accusing me of committing insurance fraud. I expressed surprise that he could find my number since he had never returned any of my three phone calls to him when I needed help. He claimed to have never received the messages. I told him it was never my intention to not pay the bill, I had been waiting for the funds from the mortgage company. He then informed me that I had until Friday to pay in full or he was calling his lawyers to commence a lawsuit against me for insurance fraud. When I tried to explain to him everything that had happened on the job he stated his employees had told him that all the trouble was my fault, none of theirs. I said to him that apparently he did not care about his customers, only getting paid. He replied, "That's right. I want my money." I called First Choice, the company would had recommended Peterson Roofing and they immediately started to investigate. As of this writing, here is the fallout from their investigation: Peterson Roofing failed to install the front porch soffits and other materials correctly. A second contractor is now scheduled to completely rip out all of Peterson's work and redo that portion of the house. New flashing on the roof line was installed, but not sealed properly, so potentially there is water running into the house behind that flashing. Siding in two areas of the house has already popped off and has to be reattached. Some of the corner work on the back of the house (this was done on the last day) is not even and misaligned. Peterson charged Farmers Insurance extra labor for detaching a deck covering/pergola to remove the old siding underneath it. They never did this work. Instead, they cut around the area that was attached to the house and then installed only a half-inch flashing to the roof area, so water has likely been running underneath the flashing and inside the exterior wall. Thankfully, First Choice has stood by me in the end and they are paying for the repairs that Peterson messed up. (Obviously with a different contractor.) It is clear to me that Jim Peterson runs a very questionable organization. They make promises to get a contract, and I don't think they really care if they honor those commitments or not. I was repeatedly assured by both Paul and Cathy that I would be more satisfied with the final work if the crew worked slower - a slow crew does a better job than a fast crew. Well, if the work of the slow crew that I got is any indication, I pity anyone who gets a fast crew from Peterson. The bottom line: every company has a "character" of its own, and this "character" is usually a reflection of the personal character of the ownership and the values that they propagate throughout the organization. Having interacted only briefly with Jim Peterson, the owner of Peterson Roofing, it became clear to me why there were so many problems and failures during my job with them. They simply want the money - nothing else matters, especially the customer. Response to Provider's Response Below: I did contract with Peterson Roofing for work beyond the Insurance Claim coverage, and the work was done by Peterson. I have no idea what he is actually responding to. If he is referring to my being unwilling to pay additional money to fix a problem they created, then yes, I did refuse to do that. See my reasons above. Original Home Improvement, a second contractor hired by First Choice to correct the significant errors in installation by Peterson Roofing, did an excellent job with the repairs. They had to reinstall the entire front porch soffits, siding and fascia, repair and seal flashing on the roof that was never sealed to prevent water from entering the home, reattach siding pieces that had already come loose, and add flashing to an area that Peterson claimed to have fixed (and added extra money to their Farmers estimate) but never actually did the work. This was confirmed by two different parties. I stand by my claim that this is a dishonest company
Description of Work: Peterson Roofing was hired to do a complete residing of my two story home. This was an insurance claim and the majority (90%) of the cost was paid by the insurance company. They were recommended to me by First Choice, a third-party contractor review company through Farmers Insurance. That is the sole reason that I went with them.

Response from Peterson Roofing Inc
We always try to do everything in our power to satisfy all of our customers. Unfortunately, although we went above and beyond for (deleted member name), he is still not happy. After reviewing the contract and related correspondence (saved and on file), it is apparent that (deleted member name) claims are simply untrue. We completed everything per the contract. This was an insurance claim and unfortunately, any additional items not covered by insurance or any upgrades would be an additional cost. Although we attempted to contract with (deleted member name) for the additional items, he did not want to pay anything extra. That being said, all the work was completed as contracted. The job came our beautiful and looks like a brand new home. I would be happy to provide copies of the contract and related correspondence with (deleted member name) to prove our case. I apologize that he is not satisfied with the service he received, but we did everything in our power, and then some, to oblige all his requests.

We needed a ridge vent installed on one section of our roof. Peterson Roofing came out promptly after I called them to give an estimate. Joe gave us an estimate, noting the type of shingle we had and the type of vent that was installed on the other parts of our roof, so they could match. We wanted to get two other estimates, so we waited about two weeks to fax the signed estimate back to Peterson to do the work. They originally told me they would schedule it and would give us 24 hours notice before they came out. I asked two of their employees if they could call with a ballpark estimate (ahead of 24 hours' notice) so we could plan. Then, Joe called the morning he could send his guys out, asking if they could come. While this was a bit of a surprise because it was not even with the 24-hour window, the workers came out and installed the ridge vent efficiently in two hours, and we were billed by mail within two days. Overall, their pricing was competitive, they seemed knowledgeable about the work that needed to be done, they said they did not use subcontractors, and they were efficient in completing the work.

Here is the story - no drama. The workers were polite and professional. Quality materials were used. They were conscious and considerate of the neighbors. I had existing anti-leaf gutters. They were carefully removed and properly re-installed saving a few thousand there. The manager followed up the day after with a 'quality' visit and and found a cosmetic issue that I would not have even considered an issue. It was replaced a day later. I waited until the roof had weathered the winter to write this. The roof had no problems and looks great. My grading scale goes bad->fair->good->excellent->no drama. It doesn't get any better than this. There were cheaper contractors out there, but I doubt that any could provide the value Peterson does.

Peterson Roofing provided great service from the initial estimate to the finishing details on the project. This company is a family run business and that is evident by the quality of their work and their commitment to making sure they follow the action plan specified by the customer. We had several questions on options for our project and Peterson Roofing explained the trade-off's clearly. In addition when we made requests that went beyond to have additional work performed they were very accommodating and tailored the project plan to our requirements.I was a pleasure to do business with Peterson Roofing and we strongly recommend them to anyone looking to do a roofing project.
