When I first discovered the problem they were not able to reach me that evening but did give me advice to help prevent the pipes from freezing overnight. The technician came the following day, I'd told them to be sure to call be 30-40 minutes before they arrived as I couldn't take the entire day off work. I left work and made it home 20 minutes after they called and found the repair man waiting there for me (he charged me for those 20 minutes he was waiting for me.) After a few minutes of inspecting things he did discover the faulty valve and indicated the repair required draining the tub. It was decided to drain the tub, winterize it and complete the repairs in the spring. He also indicated he did not have correct replacement value but would order it so when we resumed in the spring he had the parts. I also inquired about repairing the thermostat, he indicated the only way to repair it was to completely replace the control system, at least $1000 in parts. I declined. Come spring I called and made an appointment to complete the work. As we had determined exactly what was needed last time I expected this to only require 1 visit. The same technician came out and confirmed the problem. At this time I learned he had not ordered the parts so another visit (and service call charge) would be required. He removed the pump with the leaking pump seal and took it with him as labor in the shop is cheaper than labor in the field. When he returned a week or so latter he installed the new valve and reconnected the pump. Over the next few days I cleaned and refilled the tub. I then discovered the pump he'd messed with didn't function correctly. It would run in slow (filter/heat) mode fine but when it went to high power mode (jets) it would after 10-20 seconds completely stop and not pump water again in either mode, after 20 min or so it would return to its semi functional state. I called to make another appointment to fix it but they couldn't come out for a week. The morning of the appointment the pump completely stopped working. The technician spent only spent about 30 seconds then declared the pump had seized up and had to be replaced ($500). I declined. Later I contacted a different repair company who did have to replace the pump but informed me the previous repair man had connected the wires incorrectly likely causing the pump to fail. Additionally the new repair man was able to do a work around for the thermostat, while inconvenient it was immediate and didn't cost anything. He also was able to order a $300 (instead of $1000 like the last company) part to completely repair the thermostat and even taught me how to install it so he didn't have to come out again and charge me another service call. I will not be using them again for service calls, I do still visit their store for chemicals but that is only because they are the only one in the area that sells bromine (a chlorine alternative).
Description of Work: This was the a problem that developed with my spa in late 2008 just after the first freeze. A valve had malfunctioned preventing any water from passing thew the heater. The valve was replaced. The pump next to the value was also removed so a leaking pump seal could be replaced ($5 part), and I requested an estimate on correcting the thermostat that would not heat the water at all or heat it till the high temperature safety mechanism kicked in.
