THE FENCE STORE INC

We ended up hiring another firm. The salesperson, Don, was responsive - - it took about a week to get him to come out, scope the work and send us a written proposal. But that's where the responsiveness ended. Once they had our deposit, they couldn't be bothered to even contact us about scheduling the work, much less actually do the work. We contacted The Fence Store in mid April. At the time we signed the contract and paid our deposit, we were told that they were scheduling jobs three weeks out. That would've put the installation at around the 18th-20th of May which was fine. Then we got paperwork in the mail (regular mail, not email) that told us the work would be scheduled for the week of May 23 and that we would get a call to schedule the specific date once our "materials" were delivered. While I wasn't thrilled about the revised timing or the manner in which it was communicated, I went ahead and rescheduled the landscapers on the assumption that the work would be done no later than 6/1. On 5/14 I contacted them to make sure we were still on target for 5/23 since I had heard nothing from them. I contacted them again on 5/19 because no one had responded to my earlier inquiry. On 5/20, the Friday before the "installation week", Don called and said someone would be calling me. Well, no one did. Not Friday, not Monday, not Tuesday and not Wednesday. Three days into the week in which our fence was to be installed and no one could be bothered to call us either to schedule a date or to tell us that the schedule had been delayed. I cancelled the contract, asked for our deposit back and found someone else. I will post again if we don't receive our money back on a timely basis.

We were anxious to get started on our project and contacted the Fence Store based on our landscapers recommendation. They apparently are in high demand and are overwhelmed. I was able to get someone out for an estimate. (on my 3rd phone call-1st call to estimator.) Estimator knew we were on a tight deadline and fit us in quickly, which we appreciated. An estimate was promised in a couple days. Well, that did not happen. After repeated calls we decided to contact other fence contractors, and have hired someone. The estimator did show up at the time he was supposed to. That's basically the only positive thing I can say.

Don at the Fence store was extremely responsive and easy to work with. Came right over and discussed what I wanted done. We needed only one side of the backyard replaced as it was the only one that was a low chainlink. However, we were going to extend it to recover the use of a portion of our property that had been lost when previous owner installed the chainlink. Also went for a board and batten with decorative top. The bid was exactly in the ballpark for area prices and The Fence Store came recommended by the landscaper that had previously done a some work I was happy with. The two man crew arrived early in the morning and got right work. They were careful to avoid damaging my neighbors' flower beds so that was a huge relief. The old fence came right out and the new one was up before I knew it. The crew cleaned up so that the only evidence they had been there was the new fence. Very happy with the way it looks and also the increased privacy. I will be using The Fence Store for next year's project to replace the rest of the existing wood fence and two gates.

We're still working with them. They are driving me crazy. In our front parkway, because we just had all the landscaping, we had iron fence work put up around it. People won't step on that. It's dividing between my south neighbors and ourselves. They did all of that. In the process, they ruined our back gates with trying to put in our new back fence. They said that they will repair it and then we still don't hear from them. We're still dealing with them. I don't understand why it took so long. They wanted us to pay our balance but they hadn't finished the work. We haven't heard from them since September 19th now. I don't know what's happening. It's very frustrating. There were days when they said that they were coming but they never came. They never even called me.

The initial response time was slow, so it took a while to get the project going. Once installed the car gate wasn't working properly, and it took two subsequent visits to get it right. The fence now looks and works fine.

We've worked with this company previously and contacted the same salesman with whom we had previously worked. Our previous experience (in terms of workmanship and price) had been positive, so we were looking forward to working with them again. From the time of my first call, it took several days and a couple subsequent phone calls for the salesman to return my call. He was punctual for his appraisal of the fence, and due to the severity of the damage we determined that a new fence was called for as opposed to repair and so we had to set-up a second appointment so he could take measurements and write up a quote. My first hesitancy came about because he seemed too strongly focused on the fact that he has had experience working with insurance companies to ensure the best possible settlement on the damage claim. He sent the quote to us within a couple days, and I was floored by the amount, which was 38% - 40% higher than the other three quotes I obtained. I was extremely disappointed with the quote, because I was looking forward to working with them again after our first two experiences.

Adam came on the day I called the FS and agreed to do the side fence and front fence with gate quickly (within one week). We needed it for our new dog. The installed fence was pretty and the work was and is still good. BUT THE WORKERS DID NOT FOLLOW THE PROPERTY LINE SO THE FENCE IS CROOKED AND PARTLY ON OUR PROPERTY AND PARTLY ON OUR NEIGHBOR'S. When I discovered this we talked with the neighbor (who was irritated) and decided that we would leave it because it would be a full re-do and would be very expensive for the FS. A year later I asked Adam to install another gate - which would keep the dog out of a part of the garden. The price was surprising but I agreed to pay it ($600 )- so the gate would look like the rest of the work. The post was dug in the wrong place. The gate was poorly built - it does not match the first gate although they are within eyesight of eachother. It is flimsy and opens in the wrong direction. The problem of gate closure vexed Adam and he put a hook and eye in the siding which I had told him NOT to do. When that fell out, leaving a hole, he used MY solution (which worked) - but only because I refused to pay. He fixed it incorrectly without my input on a day I was not home. And now the gate opens in the wrong direction. I complained to the company and someone (the owner?) came out without an appointment when I wasn't home - and left a card lying on the porch. He did not call me or make any effort beyond that to fix the problem. Then I gave up and this gate annoys me any time I see it or use it.

Short delay in returning my initial call for an estimate but once I spoke with the salesman he was quick to come out and give estimate. Have used this company in the past (3 years ago) for repairs and everything went well. Opted for different company this time because better price.

We called for an estimate -- they came out the same day, and had an estimate for us the next day. After taking a 50% deposit, they ordered the materials and estimated that it would take 3 weeks to arrive. Exactly 3 weeks later they installed the fence over the course of 2 days. The workers were friendly and professional, although they didn't have a tremendous command of the English language. However, after the second day they left without installing the gate. We had to call back to find out that they couldn't even order it until the fence posts were set. It was another 2 weeks until they came back to install the gate. Also, no one asked us about the gate hardware -- we weren't really satisfied with what they installed. We called back to ask about it and a very friendly salesman offered to come over and discuss our options, but it seemed like too much hassle at that point.

They were very prompt about coming to provide an estimate. They gave us all of the information on the cost and service. After the job was completed, they came back to us with extra charges that were applied. We were concerned with the type of wood used in the project. Some of the boards broke during the work and more have broken since the work. I have been waiting approximately 3 to 4 months to have the boards repaired.

Still waiting on estimate after 30+ days....

The initial installation went OK. The guy who installed the fence stated he was not a regular, but was called in because the company was very busy at the time. There were certain things that were left undone. There were end caps that were left off of a few fence posts, but after a couple of calls, I stopped trying. I had tried to call back to indicate that the fence was too high off the ground, allowing my small dogs to slip underneath it. The subsequent price to fix this was extremely high. I had asked for a subsequent quote for a keyed lock to be put onto the back gate, and the price for this was quoted at $600.00. I had it done for $75.00.

Al, the salesman, was on-time, and very personable. He called the next day with an estimate, we accepted, the installers arrived as promised and we had the fence section completed in a little over 2 hours. The installers also did some extra work for us to make sure the dogs couldn't squeeze out under the fence until the new garage foundation is poured and the soil is filled in under the fence line.

Dan came over and took some measurements and had us choose what kind of fence style we wanted. I had to coordinate timing with our landscapers, and Dan was great about the back and forth phone calls and e-mails. They installed the fence first, and then the gates a couple weeks later. We weren't told that this is the typical process (once the fence is up, they double check the gate measurements before ordering them), but it was a minor inconvenience at worst. Dan was also quite flexible about the type of payment, we appreciated this as we tried to stay within our budget. In the end, we got a beautiful fence in less than one month, start to finish.

We had a good experience. They came out when promised, gave us an estimate, and completed the work when scheduled. So far so good, we would use them again.

Initially, the fence was installed wrong due to the fact that the salesperson was not present at the installation. They had to come back and fix the job. Then they had to come back and fix the gate which was poorly installed. Also, rather than a brown vinyl chain link gate I got metal and had to ask for money off for the difference. It was a lot of drama for a small job. BUT in the end, it is nice, and they can do good work if you deal directly with Jeff the project manager.

Person who took my call said a salesman would probably contact me the next day. Three weeks later I got a phone message from a salesman. By then I had already received two firm bids and signed a contract with another company!

Al D'ascenzo, salesman, was helpful. I hired them because they would be able to match my existing fence style. The repair was good, although one of Al's proposals to move existing pickets to replace the damaged ones and install all the new ones in one location wasn't followed. The result is a section of the fence where new & old are mixed. The new gate is a big improvement, but the style wasn't exactly matched. I was told the work would be scheduled 3 weeks after acceptance, but it was 5 weeks. Overall, it was a good but not great experience.

The work was completed but not to a very high standard, requiring repeated follow-up for corrective action (the company did respond but was somewhat argumentative - ''you can't expect that much for what you paid''. In fact, the firm was the second lowest bidder and we were not advised that poor workmanship was part of the deal). The work started about 6 weeks after the promised date and took about 2 weeks longer than indicated to complete. Follow-up repairs took at least another month.

The salesman, Al, was knowledgeable about fencing. He quoted both the front and back yard with cedar fencing. I only was able to do the front. It took longer than I thought to get this project going. When I mailed in the deposit with the signed contract, about two weeks went by and I called them to see where I was in the process. My order wasn't processed. They had to find it. And they had to call "JULIE" before they could start. It took about two more weeks before the installation was set up. The installer was very good. He did an excellent job. The fence looks and smells great.

It was a pleasant experience. They were polite and professional. Kasey James was very nice and very honest. The only thing I didn't like was that it's a chain store, and they use a lot of subcontractors.

Some of the work has started to fail, in need of repair.

They were a no show for the initial installation date which was also 1 week beyond the original estimated timing (although an estimate, I was annoyed at having to be the one to take the initiative to follow-up for an installation date, rather than them contacting me). The iron work was done very well. The actual design differed slightly from the original drawing but was an improvement! The wood fence was done well although there is a large gap between the ground and the bottom of the gate. Metal, concrete and wood scraps were found scattered throughout the yard which was a concern with a small child. Overall, I am satisfied but not thrilled with the job/experience with the Company.

The Fence looks beautiful! We are very impressed with the work the Fence Store did for us. They finished the job in one day. The workers were very nice and polite. Al, the project manager, came by in the morning to make sure everything was all set and ready to go. When Al came out for the estimate he was full of knowledge about all the different types of fences and what would work best with our home. HE was even kind enough to drive with me about 5 block to show him a fence in the neighborhood that I liked. He was honest in saying what would and would not work. He was also very knowledgeable about my specific towns codes, etc. Things other contractors did not even mention. From beginning to end, I think they did a great job. we have had many people stop and comment on how great it looks and ask who did it. I think the price was fair, not the least expensive, but fair and worth it for the quality.

The Fence Store responded to my husband's call immediately, came out to give an estimate the next day, and performed the work the following day. The work appears to be well done. Since we both work full-time, they did the estimate and the work without anything more than telephone contact and a charge card. No complaints from the neighbors. My only small complaint is that they are very expensive. But we needed the work done quickly, and they did what they said they would do when they said they would do it. When we need a new fence, we would hire them.
