My experience with Manchester Moving & Storage was horrible. They are based in Chicago. They told me it would be one price and then when they had all of my stuff in the truck at 10:30 at night. They started there about eight in the morning; it took them until ten thirty to get everything loaded. I have a two bedroom townhouse; it was not like I had a mansion. They switched the price on me and told that it was going to be more. I told the movers that I was going to the bank which was a mistake. When he got there originally he said you would need some cash because we can’t take credit cards and I told that was not what I was told. When I asked him how much cash he needed he said bring back I can’t remember now if he said $200 or $400, I think he said he said bring back $300. Then I bought back some money and then he continued moving me. They were two guys, one man my age in his forties and one young person. They barely speak English. At the end at ten thirty when we were looking at all the paper work he said it was going to be $8000 and when I said it was supposed to be $2500, they said that I had a lot of stuff. He said that if he was going to weigh this stuff it would cost me more than that. But I can guarantee you that if you give me $200 then we will just keep it at this price but it has to be cash and you can’t tell anybody. I gave him the $200 dollars and he put the $8000 on my credit card. I am a single woman, my husband has just died and I am alone in this house and at ten thirty he pulled away. He called me five minutes later and said that he was coming back because he thought he lost his wallet at my house. I told him that I was sure he didn’t lose his wallet at my house because there was nothing here. Everything that was in the house would be in the van now. He said he looked around and there was nothing here and said that he was coming back to look for it, so that scared me. So I walked outside thinking that I didn’t want to be alone in the house with him and just then my neighbor pulled up and I asked him if he would just come in the house with me for a moment, it was cold and snowy out there and so we helped him look for his wallet and of course he didn’t find it. He went back in the truck and then found it. I don’t think he lost his wallet at all. I think he was coming back to either get some more money or who knows what else. They didn’t come the day they told they were going to get down here to Florida with all my stuff. They were a couple of days late. There were different guys this time in the truck now with my stuff. He was a jerk. He got there at 5 or 6 o ‘clock at night and it took them till 1 o’ clock in the morning. He was all by himself. He had one helper, but the helper came to me and asked how long this would take and I told him that he was a professional and he should know how long this would take. He said that he didn’t know and that he answered the ad yesterday in the paper for this job and they told it would take just a couple of hours. But I have a date with my girlfriend at 9 o’ clock so I have to leave. The other guy, the actual moving guy could barely speak English also. All I know is that the second guy did leave at 9 o’clock and I ended up helping the mover move my stuff in because I wanted him out of there. He was not going to put any of the stuff together for me and I had two beds that needed to be put together. He was also going to leave all the stuff in the garage. As I live on the third floor, they were going to charge me an elevator fee. When I heard that their office was still open I called them and said that they couldn’t charge me an elevator fee because I told them that I live on the third floor. I talked to him again and he told me that was fine as long as there was an elevator. Anyway they didn’t charge me for that, but that guy was going to put all my stuff in the garage. I had all the boxed marked living room, dining room, etc, but he didn’t want to do that. He just wanted to put them all in the living room. I told him that he couldn’t leave until he puts these beds together. He looked pretty nasty about it, but he did stay and put the beds together. After all this mess I did complain to the company, but I didn’t have any proof so they didn’t do anything.

It was a nightmare. See above - I cannot copy or paste on your site.
Description of Work: This company is the WORST I've ever imagined. Not only in movers. Any company I've dealt with in my LIFE. I recently moved from Ohio to NYC (less than 500 miles). They picked up my things in Ohio on Sept 26th and delivered them on October 19th. My contract clearly stated that I would get my things in 3-10 days. I received them 23 days later, with a one hour notice (they told me I would get 24 hrs notice), or else pay a $300 re-delivery fee. Many things were broken beyond repair, a box of 4 bottles of wine is "mysteriously" missing, and the company? Completely out of touch, dosen't return phone calls or emails, and could not tell me where my things were for over 3 weeks. The emails I received were unprofessional and gramatically a mess. This is the exact email I received SEVENTEEN days after my things were picked up: "the truck left I do not know when it will be in NY but I did put a sticky note on your folder about no saturday deliveries the driver had other stops in MD MA WV the driver will call you I am sorry that at this time I do not have better information for you" Enough said. The day I finally got my delivery, I was only then informed that they could only accept cash or a postal money order for the $540 balance. (it was 8pm, banks were closed so I had no choice but to visit 3 ATM machines with 2 different cards, in the rain, with the flu, to take out $540 in cash. Real safe). No matter how good you think the price is or how nice you think they may be, do not even attempt to call them unless you want to be abused and stressed.

Horrible
Description of Work: Price we had to pay for move and packing was twice higher from estimate, they finished at 1 am instead of 4 pm as was agreed initially, argued not to take credit card for 1hour, when packed did not sign any boxes and broke furniture, we actually had to pack 25%of things ourself otherwise they would finish even later. Packing wad done on 07/05, everything arrived on07/21, instead of 4 days later.when we were calling to find where are our things we were just handeled in very rude way. Our items arrived and as part of contract were unloaded in the house, breaking some fixtures in the process. We will never use them again.

Very badly--We unknowingly hired a moving broker instead of a company that does moves itself--Continental Relocations-(beware) because they said they could make the move to Seattle by 8-17. They in turn, without telling us, contracted Manchester Movers which is rated very poorly on this list. The company picked up the stuff and gave a "new" estimate that was twice the one we were given by Continental Relocations. This included a charge for 91 rolls of tape they supposedly used--the blankets used for the move were included in the price, but the tape to tape the blankets on was not. This was not a whole house move so I have no idea what they used the tape on. The move -across country for my son returning from Iraq and his wife and 3 month old daughter) was supposed to be completed on or around the 8/17th. When I called Continental Relocations a few days before the 17th, they said they had no paperwork, even though they took the deposit when the order was originally placed. I was then directed to Manchester Movers and told that the stuff to be moved was still in the warehouse in Chicago because they only had three trucks and it would be a week before the truck returned, loaded and then started the trip out to Seattle. I tried to pin them down and they would not say when we could expect to complete the move, except that it could be two weeks, maybe more. When I explained the situation and why we had chosen Continental Relocations because they said they could get the job done on time, I was told that there was no guarantee and that if i didn't like it, I could move it myself! When I contacted Continental Relocation with this information, I got NO response. We ended up having to rent a uhaul and move it ourselves, because my son, daughter-in-law, and 3 month old grandaughter were going to be in an empty apartment until who knows when. We ended up being charged half of Manchester's price, which was ALL of the amount given to us by Continental Relocation.
Description of Work: After contacting more than 10 moving companies, we hired Continental Relocation because they had a good price (but not the lowest), said they could make the delivery date, and were rated well on Angie's list. I even purchase a membership so that I could be sure we were using a reputable company. They were contracted to move things from a suburb in Chicago to Seattle. This was not a complete household of furniture because my daughter-in-law and 3 month old graddaughter were living with parents until our son returned from Iraq. There was never a mention of contracting out the move or that this company would not be the one doing the move. This was not mentioned on the Angie's list posting, either.

Pretty poor experience. They showed up approximately 45 minutes after their scheduled appointment; however they did get right to work. My biggest problem with them was the pricing strategy they use. The final price was over a third more expensive than what they originally priced me at. They use a pricing strategy based on cubic inches inside the truck which I later found to be grossly over valuated. I was priced at 600 cubic inches originally and was provided with a final bill of 750 cubic inches. At the end of the day, the total cost was over $600 more expensive than originally estimated, a full third the original estimation.

This was a horrible experience. They seem to promise you the world over the phone. But look over their contracts carefully. What they say in person, and what they say in writing are 2 different things altogether. The driver showed up with a contract that stated the 4th floor condo we were moving from had an elevator. We told the sales guy several times that it was 4 floors of stairs. The sales man told me the 4 stories of stairs was included in the price quoted, but the driver told me I'd need to pay an extra $150 for the 2 extra floors. The sales man over the phone guaranteed me a same day delivery. But the contract they brought stated they had 7-10 days to deliver. The driver kept telling me "We'll deliver it today." I told the driver that I wanted to alter the contract to state same-day delivery, and he wouldn't let me. He told me "Let's be honest. If I choose to hang onto it and deliver it in a week, what are you going to do? Take me to jail? You can't do anything." I signed off on .60? per pound insurance, but they then got upset when I would not sign another document that stated word to the effect of this: "if a piece of furniture is damaged because of difficulty moving into or out of an area, all insurance coverage is waived." The driver and dispatcher both tried to tell me that it meant if a doorway was too small and I instructed them to force it in, then it was not covered. But they got upset when I said I'd only sign it if we changed the wording to say that. They also got upset when I would not sign off approval on the packing and unpacking charges part of the contract, when they had not yet filled out any numbers. They tried to tell me there would be no charges for unpacking. So when I said "Well, then it would be OK if I put zeros in that field before I signed it right?" The driver yelled at me and said I couldn't do that. The driver also tried to get me to sign a document stating that everything was delivered safely and was inspected... BEFORE they even delivered anything! I brought up all these issues I had with the driver, who then made me talk to his dispatcher via phone. They assured me that the man who sold us the job over the phone no longer worked there, he was fired, or went back to school and he had no idea what he was talking about. And when I told them that we needed to alter the contracts to say exactly what they were trying to say in person, they yelled, screamed, insulted, and ultimately they refused to go forward with the move. When I tried to verbally confirm the situation - that they were canceling the job - Adi got defensive and said "no, you're canceling it!" When I asked him to confirm that there would be no cancellation fees charged to my credit card, he would not answer me. He even refuse to give me his name. (I ended up getting it from another sales man).
Description of Work: The contracts that they brought on the day of the move were not at all what was discussed over the phone. When I wanted to change the wording before I would sign, I was yelled at and insulted by both the driver and dispatcher (Adi - via the phone). They insisted that the language of the contracts meant something they clearly did not. And they would not let me alter the language to match what they were saying. So the dispatcher told me "at this point, it's looking like we would rather not do this job for you". So ultimately, THEY canceled the job on the day of the move. They have yet to refund my deposit, even though they promised me they would over the phone.
