+ -1 moreI called Woodmaster in mid-July after purchasing a new house. I didn't need much fence but it was critical that I have some put in to contain my dogs in the yard. Rick called me back right away and we made an appointment for him to come out to my house the following Saturday, July 16th. On Saturday, Rick called before he came and we spent an hour talking over my needs. He had many creative suggestions and seemed very concerned that at the end of it all, I was happy with whatever fence i had put in regardless of what company I went with. As he was the first of the three people that I made appointments with, it made the other estimates go much easier because he helped me understand what kind of fence would be best and what materials I should be requesting. Originally I called five local fence companies - one never called back and one told me they didn't work on the weekends or do estimates after 4:30pm during the week. As I work downtown and live in the northern burbs, it is important that my contractors are able to work around my schedule. I asked for an eight foot section of cedar fence in the front of my yard six foot tall and a second section 18 foot section with an entry gate and an eight food removable panel, five feet tall. After receiving all three estimates, not only was Rick's the least expensive but the best fence for my needs. We agreed that the fence would be installed the week of August 22nd. On Friday, August 19th Rick called and said his crew would be able to come out on Saturday if it worked for me. He and his crew should up early Saturday morning as we agreed the day before. His crew got to work right away and even with a rain delay they were finished by noon. The fence is wonderful! And it totally meets my needs. Several neighbors have stopped by and admired it. The crew was clean and picked up their detritus from the job and hauled away the section of falling down gate and fence that I had replaced. Except for the wonderful smell of cedar, I never knew they were there.
Description of Work: I needed an old fence and gate replaced so it would contain my dogs in my yard (18 feet) and I needed eight feet added in the front of my yard to close up the gap.

Description of Work: 7/20/11 -Rick's team replaced weak posts, damaged lattice damaged areas of our fence that were broken due to storm damage and did some minor repairs to both entry gates making them easier to open and close. Woodmaster did the work on 1 day's notice in 100 degree heat. Great job, much appreciated! Tried using this client again just recently (6/2012) and what a different response this time. I couldn't hardly get him to return my calls or emails, and because of his lack of interest in the job, we moved on and hired someone else. + -1 moreI had a great experience with WoodMaster. Rick was very nice to deal with and returned my calls promptly. Rick's estimate was exactly what he charged me, there were no surprises. He even gave me a few options to save on the cost! His crew was here at exactly the time I was told they would start. The two men who came to install my fence went out of their way to make sure that I was satisfied with their work . They checked with me several times throughout the day and had me look at the progress to make sure everything was to my liking. They were here on a brutally hot and humid day and even with the horrible weather, they couldn't have been more pleasant to deal with. My fence is beautiful. I'm completely satisfied and would highly recommend WoodMaster Fence.
Description of Work: WoodMaster Fence installed a 4' high #1 grade Western red cedar 1x4" picket fence with 2" spacing. The total length of the fence was 197' with 2 - 4' gates. 4 x 4" posts were set 36" in concrete. My old fence was torn down and hauled away. All new post holes were dug and the old dirt was moved into a low area of my yard as I requested.

If a company can not show up to give you an estimate how do you know if they will show up to do the work once they have some of your money?
Description of Work: We had called to get them to come out to give us an estimate on having a fence installed. We are retired so we were very flexible with the time for the appointment. The person on the phone chose 8:30 am on a Friday morning.

They were here when they said they'd be here and the work was done in a timely manner (took two days start to finish). Rick took care of getting the building permit and calling Julie. The fence is beautiful and the quality of the workmanship evident. We have gotten several compliments from our neighbors and people walking by our home. We would certainly recommend WoodMaster Fence!

+ -1 moreThe experience I have had with them is very bad. I have had to continually call and email them after the fence broke in November. They came out, and inspected it and told me it would be fixed. 3 months have now passed and he has not made any attempt to fix it. The fence is under warranty. I was told it would be fixed in January, and then the date was pushed back to February and now my fence is still not fixed.

+ -1 moreHe was very honest. We had a few other companies come out to give quotes and they all included running a fence parallel to our neighbor?s fence. Woodmaster was the only company that said we wouldn?t need to do that even though it cost him some money. They put the fence up in one day, we got compliments from our neighbors, and we love it. It is sturdy and it survived the blizzard we had this winter. We haven?t had any problems with it and I love it; it is my favorite thing about the house.

No workers showed up until Friday, 12/10 (& late-10a). Were told there would be a crew, but there were only 2 workers on any given day & there were a variety of different workers that ended up doing the fence which caused confusion because they often weren’t sure what type of fence they were supposed to be building & weren’t up to date on the specifics of the project. Work went from 10-3:30pm on Friday & ended w/ about 2/3rds of the posts set. (Cut neighbors cable lines in 3 places.) Woodmaster was supposed to come back to finish the next morning (no show, no calls) & was supposed to come back Monday (no show, no calls). We tried to contact Rick, the owner, but phone calls were not returned. Eventually got through, but he had no information, was not helpful or even polite. Tues 12/14 2 workers from 11a-4 finished the posts, no fence up. Weds 12/15 2 workers from 11-6p got most of fence finished. Tues. 12/21 workers came in late afternoon & finished fence. Owner of company unhelpful & had no or wrong information. Was argumentative, hard to reach, wasn’t interested in resolving any problems. Became much easier to reach & did respond to emails/phone calls when it was time to collect the remainder of the money. 3/21/2011: We thought the situation was over, but were wrong. City inspector showed up at our door w/ a copy of the permit signed by the owner of the company (Rick) that says that fencing in our neighborhood must be at least 30% open, which ours isn’t. We were sold a privacy fence (more expensive) & our illegal fence must come down & be rebuilt. Have been trying to contact Rick w/ no response yet. 4/5/2011: Rick from Woodmaster fence scheduled to redo fence today at 8a. 9a Rick was in our driveway & called us saying his crew’s truck broke down & he would not be able to do the fence today. Rescheduled for Thurs. We had an inspector/city inspection scheduled for today, called to reschedule inspection for Thurs. (Inspection is supposed to be scheduled by Woodmaster fence, but they have not been doing it.) 4/7/2011: Fence completed, we rescheduled inspection again for Monday because fence completed too late to inspect today. 4/11/2011: Fence inspected (no one from Woodmaster present, we scheduled the inspection ourselves), fence passed inspection. 4/12/2011: Called Rick to discuss refund for violation of contract. 4/15/2011: Received a small $619 check from Rick which is way too little of a refund on a $4k fence. 4/22/2011: Talked to Rick & he said he’d rather go to court than refund any more of our money. We will contact Angie’s List, The Better Business Bureau, & the Illinois Attorney General’s office. Complaints Filed Better Business Bureau (4/24/2011) Submitted a report to Angie’s List 12/2010 & 4/2011 & 5/17/2011 Filed official complaint with Angie’s List (email sent 4/26/2011) Angie's List contacted Woodmaster, but they refused to rectify the situation. Official complaint sent to Illinois Attorney General’s office 4/26/2011 (via USPS) Notified on 5/16/2011 that claim was accepted & that the Attorney General’s office would be contacting Woodmaster fence. He came out and measured for the estimate, and told me I didn't need to replace the back fence that I thought would need to be replaced. He took care of getting the permit from the Village, and put the fence in as promised. Neighbors on both sides of me commented on how nice the fence looked. There were not any surprises with the price either, it was exactly what Rick stated.

Rick came out the morning the work started and made sure the crew knew exactly what to do and how to handle any potential complications. The guys installed 90% of the fence that day and finished the morning of the next day. The fence is very solid, straight and level. All the old fencing was removed and disposed of. Overall it went very well.

+ -1 moreRick came out promptly and gave us an estimate. We waited awhile to schedule but once we did his guys came over and built the fence in a day. Part of the fence runs along a big privet hedge so they had to trim it back to make room to work. They did it expertly without ruining it. They also replaced had to uproot part of a brick sidewalk to put in posts but replaced the bricks without messing it up. The fence itself is really nicely done. My only complaint is that the bottom of the pickets is a little uneven in a couple of places, but probably due to the uneven ground. That's why I said quality was a B. I would have chosen A minus or B plus if that was an option. Noticed it at first but don't anymore. We had a lot of trouble deciding how high the fence should be since it runs along the alley and we wanted it to be high enough to provide protection without blocking the view or light entirely. Rick was VERY patient with us as we muddled through that decision. The work was great and fast. No real complaints.
Description of Work: Rick's team built a 125-foot cedar picket fence along our house in Lincoln Square. Our house is along the alley so the fence runs the entire length of our yard.

The job was done in just under two days. The installers were polite and professional. They also went above and beyond by removing a 4 foot wrought iron fence that bisected my yard at no additional cost, something I never could have managed on my own. Owner Rick Manderschied was easy to contact and always returned calls. He followed up after the job was done to make sure that I was completely satisfied and I got the distinct impression that he truly cared about my response. Overall, this was a great experience.

During the estimate, I was told about 2 other posts that were broken and given an estimate to get all replaced. The workers did a great job and they also fixed other areas of the fence where the boards were coming lose. I thought the price was good for everything that was done.

+ -1 moreRick was really great to work with. He is very knowledgeable about his fences and has been doing this a long time. Since we are very new to home ownership, we don't know much about installing fences, and Rick took a great deal of time explaining the process to us, including details about work permits, property boundaries, as well as the installation process. The quote he gave us was far less than the other companies we had come out to check out our space, which is pretty large. He was the only one who explained to us that we didn't need to run fence parallel to our neighbor's fence - in essence, selling us less fence, but making sure everything looks and is done right. Instead, he explained to us that since our neighbor's fence is right on the property line, he could run our fence right up to the side of it, and not have a gap between. We were really impressed by the fact that he was willing to essentially sell us less fence. Being new homeowners, we had no idea that we didn't have to run fence parallel to our neighbor's, and he easily could have let us go on thinking that. His was also the only company to completely take care of obtaining the work permit for us, which was really nice. About a week or so after confirming our contract and getting the permit approved, he and his crew came out early in the morning and started the work promptly. I went out and talked with him when I was on my way out to work and when my husband got up, he went out and gave them the deposit check. It was nice to not have to worry about interrupting our morning routine in order for them to get started. The fence went up wayyyyy faster than we were anticipating. We had thought it was going to take a least a week, but the fence was up in two days! We were SO excited. They probably would have been done in one day, except we got a major thunderstorm in the afternoon on the first day. There were absolutely no problems with the installation. They cleaned up everything and weren't even loud. The fence is absolutely beautiful. We couldn't have asked for a better job. They did a great job on all the little details as well - the fence post toppers, the hardware, and the lattice are all perfect. The fence is really sturdy, and they did a great job not leaving any gaps between the ground and the fence, so I feel completely comfortable letting all our pets out into the yard. Everyone on our block has stopped by to comment on how beautiful the fence is. About a week after installation, we had a question about if we should look into sealing our fence, and so we contacted Rick to ask him what he thought. He responded to us thoroughly and just as quickly as if we were still in the contract process. He explained all of the process to us, as well as about staining if we wanted to do that. Overall, we had a great experience with Rick and Woodmaster, and would highly recommend them. I feel completely comfortable with calling them if anything needs to be repaired or changed about our fence in the future. Highly recommended!!
Description of Work: We had Rick come and install a cedar 5' privacy fence with a foot of lattice on top around our entire backyard, including a 3' foot and 5' gate with locks. He and his crew also removed and hauled away the existing chain link fence and cut out any shrubbery and overgrowth that hindered the installation of the new fence.

The job is not done by calling one day and having it done the next, so I have discovered. I have a great looking and functional fence for my wait. It is of a high grade and installed meticulously by professional labor. The gates arrived with a few scrapes and blemishes from transport, I would imagine. Most were touched up. To keep delay away, I let them be set as is.
