Modern Enhancements

Large, vaulted ceiling bathroom was original to house, circa 1986. Wanted large whirlpool tub removed and replaced with large soaker tub. Purchased higher height vanity, and decided to replace vinyl flooring with ceramic. We chose Modern Enhancements because the Troy, the owner, is local and company small enough to offer personal service quickly. Job was started in early June, with estimated completion in 3 weeks. Actually took 6 weeks; job was finished mid July. Jeff, the project manager, was conscientious about quality work. He and an apprentice helper did most of the work; arrived promptly each day and worked steadily. Troy checked in frequently, and scheduled subcontractors (plumber, electrician), who also lived nearby. City building Inspections passed, so no hold-ups occurred. City surprised us by requiring an upgraded electrical circuit, and this took an entire Saturday to re-wire. We weren't charged extra. Jeff was obsessive about smoothing spots where wallpaper was removed, and leveling the walls before tile work. They were still patching/sanding walls when the ceiling was primed, and several walls were painted before all the patches were sanded. Walls were painted, then drywall compound would be applied to a stubborn spot, and the whole wall would be redone. Some of the nail pops that were repeatedly covered/smoothed have now reappeared. So, not sure if all the effort was worthwhile. With all the drywall repair/sanding, there was a lot of dust. The ZipDoor failed the first week, and did little to keep the mess out of the bedroom and hallway. They covered the stairs and entryway with plastic and tarps, but it needed to be mopped daily, not just swept with a broom. I purchased a new ZipDoor myself, but with all the running in and out to cut and trim tile, it didn't last long either. A final one was put up after I requested it. The granite tops arrived before Jeff was done with the flooring. I asked that the floor be scrubbed and mopped before the vanity was installed, but it was put in place over the grimy floor tile. It wasn't easy to clean afterword, but I did that myself. We purchased the tub, vanity, tile, plumbing fixtures, lighting, and granite ourselves. The original contract granted allowances for those, and Modern Enhancements would procure those if we had preferred. Modern Enhancements did supply the shower door and toilet, working w/i the contract allowances. Overall, we are satisfied. Troy and his workers were easy to work with and complied with our requests. Subcontractors were excellent and arrived on time.
