A few days later I found out that the unit was making loud banging noises. I had Best Heating & Cooling out to fix the issue, but after 2 appointments the problem wasn't fixed and they told me that there was nothing further that they would do to resolve the issue. I've had to hire an outside company to fix the problem because Best Heating & Cooling refuses to.
Description of Work: I purchased a new heating and ac combo unit from Best Heating & Cooling and they installed it. The next day a techinician had to come back because the HVAC unit hadn't been properly connected.

Their service was outstanding i called at 2:00 on Sunday with a broken A/C unit and by 7:00 Sunday night my house was cool. No extra charge for Sunday service. Mike was Fast, professional, and most important did not try to upsell me in to something i didn't want and could not afford. The tech spent 3 hours in 90 degree heat just to make sure all was right before he left. I wish I would have known about them years ago when I had the system installed. Quality and customer service are alive and well at Best heating and cooling! Thanks again!

Mike with Best Heating & Cooling came out to my home on a Friday evening. We just brought home our new baby boy from the Hospital and our Furnace went out. Mike gave us a free Estimate and he came out free of charge. Surprisingly to us before he left our home Friday night he gave us three portable Furnaces so we wouldn't freeze over night. We didn't even have to pay him a deposit on the new Furnace he just came back early Saturday morning and installed the new Furnace. He even gave us a free thermostat because we purchased a new furnace and he offered to come next year free of charge to preform annual maintenance to our furnace. Mike said we need to keep up with the maintenance because of the warranty. I already recommended Mike from Best Heating & Cooling to my Mother and some of my neighbors. It's so hard to find an honest guy like Mike he was definitely a blessing to my Family. Thanks Mike for all the discounts nobody wants to pay full price right before Christmas.

Note: This company has an "F" rating with the IL BBB. 12/02/2011 New Goodman furnace Model GDS80804BN installed by Best Heating ($2000) 12/03/2011 Furnace made rattling noises Called Best Heating and left message. No response from Best Heating 12/04/2011 to 12/6/2011 Called and left messages No response from Best Heating 12/07/2011 Received an email from owner, Mike Czernek, with an estimate to install three double-vented pipes on the rooftop (to replace furnace PVC pipes that were clogged with debris and wasp nests) the estimate was for $975 not $300 as quoted by Steve Czernek on day of installation. I emailed the owner (Mike Czernek) regarding the rattling noise, video of wasp nests, and the promised itemized bill that Steve Czernek was going to provide. I also asked for a revised quote to reflect the $300 pipe repair vs. $975. No response to voicemail or email from Best Heating for a week 12/15/2011 I personally inspected the furnace and found source of rattling. Metal adhesive came loose from duct & furnace union on top left side Large hole in duct work Hot air blowing out of hole Limited heat in condo (maintained 64F) 12/16/2011 I called again and finally got in touch with someone [Kelly] at Best Heating who apologized and said I needed to schedule a repair service 12/17/2011 Steve Czernek and another repairman arrived (smelled of booze). Old adhesive was patched over with new adhesive to block hole. Furnace room remained extremely hot Steve blamed rooftop vents. Steve apologized profusely for not getting the video and detailed invoice. Steve apologized profusely for the rooftop vent quote being wrong. Steve promised to get the information out to me via email by Christmas 12/18/2011 ? 2/03/2012 No follow up on rooftop vent repair (video)Furnace room remained extremely hot. Furnace continued to cycle on and off every 4 minutes. Furnace made a loud buzzing noise and stopped 1/13/2012 New furnace shut down ? would not restart Emergency service call placed around 8am Kelly at Best said nobody available until 4pm or later My wife contacted Steve who said he would arrive at 10am Steve Czernek never showed My wife took picture of a 3? Long x 5? Wide gap between furnace & wall 2:30pm nobody showed I called Best Heating; Kelly said the repairman was in a traffic jam I called Best Heating; demanded to speak to owner Owner never called back Best repairman showed around 3pm and did a patch repair using sheet metal and adhesive Still no return call from owner Later found out that the repairman WAS the owner, he never introduced himself as the owner, but later stated that he was the one who did the sheet metal repair 1/14/2012 Sheet metal broke free from adhesive and had to use a soup can to hold down sheet metal 1/15/2012 Called Best Heating to demand new installation and for Michael Czernek to call. Got Voicemail No Response 1/16/2012 Called Best Heating to reinstall furnace Got Voicemail No Response 1/17/2012 Michael Czernek emailed me with an offer to settle a complaint. ?We will refund the cost of the installation of the Furnace. The Furnace was $1,495 + tax = a refund of $355.55 for the install.? (I did a Google search of the Goodman furnace and found that it retails to the public for less than $700) I rejected this offer listing several issues that included, but were not limited to: Breach of contract ON/ OFF cycling of furnace every four (4) minutes Furnace room exceptionally hot Furnace not installed flush against the wall Unacceptable patch repair by Michael Czernek on 1/13/2012; using sheet metal and duct tape Hot air billowing out of existing furnace ductwork and plenums Potential void of warranty due to faulty installation Condo temperature remained consistently 64F / thermostat set at 74F Air vent flow weak Existing ductwork, piping and fittings incorrectly connected to new furnace I gave Best Heating & Cooling up to February 3, 2012 to correctly replace the existing furnace, at no charge, with the same make and model furnace, including connections to the ductwork, as was our previous agreement. Michael Czernek asked to have a third party estimate and assess the situation and said he will follow up once that's been done. Czernek asked for this because he said he "believes the issues have been taken care of." 2/01/2012 I provided a third party estimate from Besco Air, a company that employs EPA-certified technicians and are a highly reputable, fully qualified HVAC company; licensed, bonded and insured. Besco Air performed a walk through inspection of the condo the week of January 23rd, and provided an estimate the following week that included, but was not limited to a bullet list of items necessary to facilitate the efficiency of the furnace. The winter conditions and no confidence in Best Heating (among other concerns), required me to hire an outside source to remove and reinstall the furnace correctly. Still no response from Best Heating regarding my counter offer, nor did they ever call and discuss the issues with me. 2/02/2012 Two months after Best Heating's installation, furnace issues remain unresolved. Best Heating had 24 hours to meet my counter-resolution deadline given on 1/17/2012. No response from Best Heating. 2/03/2012 Besco Air arrived promptly at 7:30am to correct the issues that Michael Czernek felt were "taken care of". For several hours, Besco Air removed and reinstalled the furnace correctly; following the guidelines and direction of their supervisor who instructed them personally at the beginning and inspected the work at the end. Besco found no wasp nests or clogging in the double vented pipes on the rooftop. The pipes Best Heating pointed out as the reason for the furnace room being so hot were bathroom vent pipes, not even furnace pipes. No video was ever produced by Best Heating as to the alleged wasp nests and clogging, just a quote for $975. A formal complaint was filed with the IL Better Business Bureau: BBB Complaint Case #94383467 No response from Best Heating. 2/04/2012 to 2/06/2012 (end of day) No response from Best Heating. The results of Besco Air's reinstallation are (but not limited to): The furnace cycles ON/ OFF properly, the furnace room temperature is comfortable/ ambient, the furnace is installed flush against the wall, there is no hot air billowing out of existing ductwork or plenums, air vent flow is good, and the overall condo temperature remains within 0.3 degrees of the thermostat setting. Cost for Besco Air's reinstallation: $837.50 Estimated incidental utility (gas & electrical) damages at an additional $200 2/10/2012 The receipt from Besco was sent to Michael Czernek, along with the video of the sheet metal repair that remained detached for three weeks after Czernek patched it. Michael Czernek replied that he placed a metal plate on the furnace over the area where the air was blowing into the room, attached by using screws as well as tape that melts to seal any leaks when it gets heated. (Besco later reported that there were no screws anywhere to be found, and that a melting tape is something they never heard of). Czernek also challenged that some of the items on the Besco receipt were for a/c and humidifier, and not furnace, such as ?rerun line set and check a coil for blockage? ? as well as separate costs for materials and labor. Best Heating requested an itemized receipt showing what we paid strictly for the furnace work, minus the a/c work. 2/13/2012 Contacted Ed Pfeifer from Besco, who reinstalled the furnace, stated that NO CHARGES on the receipt are applicable to any a/c work ? they only checked the coil but did not charge the customer for it. The furnace is working properly now. What Ed at Besco says he found when he arrived at our home: The counter flow where the air goes down for supply was too far out, 3/4 inch off the wall is where it should be, but was about 4 inches off the wall so the furnace was short cycling and not operating properly, Best put a piece of sheet metal over it with silver tape, customer used a soup can to hold it down as it was blowing and making noise; Besco removed the whole furnace and put it back where it should be, they did not actually work on the a/c at all other than checking a coil and did check the b vent for blockage but there was no blockage - the heat of the room was caused strictly by improper installation; also gas pipe was run incorrectly so they fixed that as well; supposedly they left the line set exposed where they should have left arbiflex on it; humidifier was also not hooked up- the furnace is now working okay - no work on the a/c was done so the charges are strictly for furnace reinstall, time and material. 2/14/2012 Michael Czernek refused to accept that Besco had two men paid for 4.5 hours at $175 per hour for just a reinstall of the Goodman furnace, and therefore refused to pay $837.50. He also would not pay for the incidental utility estimate as it appeared that Czernek continues to believe that the problems were resolved on 1/13/2012. Best Heating said they would only pay 3.5 hours at $87.50 per hour plus $50 in parts ($356.25). Minus the parts, this offer was less than their refund offer of $355.55 on 1/17/2012. Michael Czernek was asked if he would change his offer if he saw a detailed receipt, and he said ?no?. 2/15/2012 I contacted my attorney for legal consultation 2/22/2012 In lieu of suing Best Heating & Cooling, I accepted payment for $356.25 without agreeing to hold Best Heating harmless of the damages or keeping me from warning people through social & professional mediums.
Description of Work: On Dec 1, 2011 our furnace went out, so my wife and I searched for a service professional to repair our furnace using another resource other than Angie's List. Best Heating and Cooling (Lombard, IL) came out to provide an estimate. According to the Best Heating service technician, Steve Czernek, the motor burned out on the Carrier unit. We were told by Best Heating that the furnace was undersized, an up-flow and not a down-flow, and was probably purchased in volume by the contractor (one size fits all). They recommended that we purchase a new furnace. According to Steve Czernek, the installation included reinforcement of the duct work that inevitably would come "crashing down" as they removed the old furnace. We were told the ducts were held together loosely with a few screws. Steve assured that the furnace and duct work would be installed correctly. We hired Best Heating & Cooling to install the furnace, Steve and two other installers arrived (late) on Dec 2, 2011 and performed the work. After the installation, Steve explained to my wife that the furnace room was extremely warm due to insufficient exhaust ventilation. He showed my wife the rooftop vents he inspected and stated that the video he took showed wasp nests and debris blocking airflow; he was going to email the video footage the next day (he could not produce it on the spot). Steve pointed out that the PVC pipes were not even “code” and Best Heating would need to install double-vented pipes on the rooftop. This repair would be necessary to keep the furnace room temperature regulated and prevent the furnace from constantly cycling on and off due to the safety limit switch overheating. He said he would do this repair for $300, but my wife explained it was a “common area” and we would need board approval. Steve said he would provide a video and estimate; along with a detailed copy of the work performed.

I had used this company previously to replace my furnace in January 2011 and was very happy at that time, they were prompt and had good pricing, but when I had them come out to service my A/C unit it was a completely different experience. On June 9 and 10, 2011 our house had a new A-coil installed and additional refrigerant added to the outside compressor. This was finally finished after 2 days both of which the technician was 2 hours late and I had to go into work late on June 10, 2011. This was after June 9th when the technician said he would return to finish the install later that evening. That evening came and went with no technician and no phone call. Once installed and before technician left I mentioned that I noticed a smell similar to gas and he confirmed the same thing. He went through with a gas detector and said that there were no leaks that he could detect. At that point our air conditioner worked for a few days and then was putting out warm air again. After going without air conditioning for about a month, I had a different company come out to quote a new A/C unit. The technician that came out that day noted that there was about a 1-1 1/2 inch gap between the housing for the A-coil and the duct work . It was also noted that there were very few creases in the duct work and it looked like it had been bent by hand. On July 16, 2011, I had a new A/C unit installed by this new company out of St. Charles. The installer noted that there were only a few screws holding the evaporator duct work together and held together mainly by tape. Upon leaving installer asked if there was a reason why the gas to the furnace was shut off and I was unaware that it was turned off. Gas was turned back on prior to leaving. Later that day after being out of the house for a few hours noticed an odor that smelled like gas but also a little musty. Spoke with on call technician and was told to give it a little time as may be just mustiness and humidity being pulled from the air as the odor seemed to be coming only from the vents. Once unit reached temperature and turned off, odor seemed to dissipate and did not notice anything overnight. Once unit kicked back on in the morning of July 17, 2011 odor returned. Called on call technician from new company and when technician came into the house initially did not notice any smell, but once down in the area with the furnace, odor was quite evident. Upon examination it was found that all the gas fittings to the furnace were loose and leaking to the point that if I had not noticed smell and had someone come out and check, the house could have ?blown up? (technician?s words). Technician was able to loosen fittings by hand and did not need tools to take apart. There was no sealant on the threads of the pipes either, looked as if sealant was placed around outside of fitting to make it look like it was sealed. I am upset that I had to pay a total of almost $3000 (furnace in January 2011 and A-coil work was $1200) for such unprofessional work. I am very dissatisfied with the services received. I have tried to contact Best Heating & Cooling but the certified letter that I sent was returned to me as unable to forward.
Description of Work: Hired to replace A-coil for A/C unit and to check if needed recharge on refrigerant.

Response from Best Heating & Cooling
We spoke to the wife on a day that it was very hot and we replaced the coil. Yes we were two hours late but we explained to her that there was leaks and she needed a new air-conditioning unit as well. At this time the Technician was there but the customer had to go to work so she didn't have time. We left her a Estimate for the outside unit but as he never called back we just figured she didn't want to do business with us anymore. As far as we know at that time she was unhappy because we couldn't save her unit. The only fix would be to change the outside unit. So we figured she called someone else. We never heard back or we would have returned. We have the same number but the office was moved in march of 2011. We are sorry they had a bad experience but we can not make her happy unless she calls the husband was not there on that occasion.
