My wife and I had a few companies bid on our house, approx 1500 sq. ft. Value Floors was the most aggressively priced, and we signed a contract with them. They offered us $500 off of their original estimate, and we accepted. We to begin installation on a date that was about 4 weeks in the future. The materials would be delivered about a few days prior to the install date. The laminate flooring was delivered to our garage (should have been inside, to allow the material to equalize to room temp), and I had to move it all inside. We did the carpet removal ourselves, so we had bare floors throughout our house, thinking that we would only have to deal with it for a few days. On the date of installation, we were contacted and informed that they could not make the planned install date, and would be a couple days behind. No problem, I went into work and adjusted my vacation schedule accordingly. We were informed there would be 3 guys working on our house. There was one. Ron (primarily a stairs guy) had to wrap up some details on another job site, so there was just one guy working on our laminate flooring. (Had there been two, the process would obviously have gone faster) On day two, Ron and 1 guy show up and start working around 11:00 am (still no third guy). They work for about 4 hours, then call it a day, and head home. They attempted to remove the existing transition into the kitchen (tile), and cracked a tile. There was no offer to replace the tile, it was apparently something that I should accept, and hope that I have spare tiles in the house. Fortunately, I did have one full tile piece to replace the one that they had split in two. On the other side of the kitchen, The cracked another tile. This one was a partial tile, and we used the remnants of the other tile they cracked. I had to leave, so they were on their own to replace these tiles. When I returned, the grout line on the new tiles was not even close to the same level as the other tiles, and Ron said that he would come back tomorrow and match the grout and fix it. The progress was slow, but it seemed okay. The next day (day 3), I wasn't able to be home in the morning to be in the house with them, so they had a garage door opener that they could use to get in the house. They finished the job on the third day, or so we thought...At this point, we started noticing some flaws in the installation. We had quarter round installed along with our floors, and realized that very few of the corners were done properly. Several had one side of the miter cut overhanging the other, with a rough edge sticking out. There were several gaps between the quarter round and the baseboard, which we had to flag for Ron to get them fixed. The laminate wasn't installed far enough under the baseboard/quarter round, so there were gaps between the laminate and the quarter round. Some of the laminate pieces had corners that were upturned, from shipping and handling. Some of these pieces were installed in the middle of the room, with the corners still sticking up. We made them fix it and replace those pieces. We also noticed one of the transition pieces was installed improperly. There was some terrible carpentry done on the quarter round cuts, and some pieces that weren't even installed. There was even an inside corner that wasn't even mitered. It was left with two straight cut pieces of quarter round. When I called Jay to straighten this mess out, I was informed that I had to talk to "Ronny" and let him know. (I don't like this business model. If I call Jay, he can talk to his employees and tell them to make it right!) When I contacted Ron, he was insulted that I found so many things wrong. As if I shouldn't make him do the job that we hired him to do. He actually asked me if I was on my hands and knees inspecting the work. I informed him that after we found some of the more obvious problems, yes, I was inspecting their work closely, and I was very grateful that I did!The finish work was done very sloppily, and I told him that I wouldn't be satisfied until it was fixed and done right. We were getting carpet installed as well, and was told by Ron that they would install the transition pieces between the carpet and the laminate. At this point, the laminate was (mostly) done, there were specific issues left with that. We had the Carpet guys coming Friday, or so we though. When I called Jay to complain about the shoddy work, he apparently suspected that I was going to stiff him for the job, and told me his carpet guys weren't available until we worked things out with Ron. In my mind, that was Jay's problem, not mine, but he informed me that he couldn't get the carpet guys in until the following week. In an hour they had become busy...When the carpet guys arrived (5 days later), they set up shop, told me what to expect, how the process would go, and how long it would take. VERY professional. I asked them to look at some of the things that I was complaining about, and said that 'Ron just wasn't the same as he used to be.' They also mentioned that they wouldn't leave the house like that, either. They did their thing, and I asked them why they weren't putting in the transitions, and they said that they didn't have the material. They picked up the carpet, and were told that was all they needed. While they were installing, I asked them if they were available on the date that Jay said they weren't, and, sure enough, they didn't have anything going on that day. It would appear that Jay lied BLATANTLY to me, a customer. Later on, I found out that he thought I would stiff him on final payment on the job, so he withheld the carpeting from us to make sure that we would pay. After the carpet guys left, we waited......and waited.....and called......and waited..... Apparently, fixing our floors was not very high on their priority list. Jay continually forwarded me over to Ron, who was unavailable when we were (weeknights and weekends). I informed him that I was done taking vacation for them to fix up something that was done poorly the first time. They could come when I was available now. Eventually, Ron returned my call, and we had a very brief discussion in which he grilled me for wanting the job to be perfect, and he thought I was being 'picky'. He also didn't understand why the transitions weren't installed by the carpet guys. About a week later, he returned with another guy, and completed about half the work required to finish the job. They told me they'd be back in a couple days. So we waited to hear from Ron about when they'd come over and finish. FOR FOUR WEEKS. The job started in April, and it was now June. Apparently, somebody told Ron that he'd have to finish the work or be out of the final payment. He finally called and asked when he could come in and wrap up... I told him the timing hadn't changed, I was avalable on nights and weekends, at which point he interjected that he "doesn't work n*gg*r hours." I ended the call immediately and called Jay, wanting to talk to the owner. Rich was unavailable at the time. I was furious. Eventually, Ron figured out that had he done it right the first time, he'd be done by now, so he called back, didn't apologize for his disgusting language, and wanted to finish the job. At this time, I was exhausted from fighting with them, and just wanted them out of our lives...we set a date and he actually made it! It took far too much time and effort to get them to do their job. Ultimately, it would take Value Floors/Ron/Jay a little more than 2 months to complete a job that should've taken a week.
