Maverick Construction - Lincoln, IL

Ken Walker (owner) was called by us to get an estimate on gutting two bedrooms and rebuilding them. A bid of $2,078 was placed by Maverick Construction and since he had done work for us two previous times, we went with them. Just before starting the project, Mr. Walker called us and told us that he had talked to his employee and that the employee expressed concerns that Mr. Walker low bid the job and that they would be working for $7-8 per hour after cost of materials. I agreed to help out so I cut up and removed the subflooring in one room and then cut up the other floor and left it for them to just grab it and remove it. The first day of construction we got a phone call saying that they wouldn't be able to start that day because Mr. Walker's employee had scabies and that Mr. Walker was going to the doctor to see if he had it and if it was contagious. On the second day they got started and at 4pm everyday they were leaving. This project was suppose to be done the week of spring break when my wife and kids were home from school so that this way there was someone home while the construction was going on. It took two weeks for the work to get done. They arrived around 8:30am and left at 4pm Mon-Fri. During the second week, Mr. Walker's employee wrecked on a motorized bicycle and tore some ligaments in his knee so Mr. Walker borrowed a guy from Mathews Construction to finish up the mudding of the drywall. I was not present during construction but my wife told me afterwards that they used nails to lay the subflooring in which screws should have been used. There were materials of ours that Maverick Construction used because they didn't purchase the items for the job. The Lauan plywood that was laid over the subflooring was poorly laid. There was gaps along the wall and basically tells me that they didn't measure correctly before cutting. The worse was after they were gone and we started painting that I noticed that every cut in the drywall for the electrical boxes was cut too big for the faceplate. I had to fix every outlet myself. So, basically, we cut up the floor, removed the flooring, painted the walls and laid the carpeting to save money. All Maverick construction had to do was shore up joist along the outer wall to support the subfloor, remove inner walls and rebuild them, lay drywall, mud and sand the drywall and it took two weeks with 2-3 guys working each day. These bedrooms were small, being 10 X 11 feet each. Mr. Walker come to my work place and told me he needed more money to finish the job because he had to purchase more materials that they didn't count on. I wanted it done and with it taking longer, I agreed to pay more money which was $500 more than the job bid. I figured up the materials and the hours worked and figured that with the extra money that they were making about $14 per hour for labor. Mr. Walker told me that they charge $58 per hour for labor but wasn't charging me that much. I don't believe that non-union construction workers made that much per hour. I took pictures of the electrical outlets for proof of the poor workmanship. We will not use Maverick Construction for future remodeling.

It went very well. My wife and I were very pleased with the service that Maverick Construction did. They worked around our schedule, installed the windows and even hauled our old windows away. To save myself money on labor, I removed the siding around the windows. Maverick Construction was ok with that as they knew we were trying to save money. They didn't pressure us to let them remove the siding so that they can charge us more. We had an air conditioner in one of the windows that was replaced. Maverick Construction instructed us not to put the air conditioner in the new window for a couple of days to allow the caulking to cure. After they were done installing the windows, I put the siding back up. Maverick Construction even gave me a siding hook tool to help me with getting the siding back up. It made the work so much easier. After nailing the piece of siding back in place, I just used the hook tool to pull the piece above it down and pop it back into the slot. We took pictures and posted them on Facebook and have received a lot of compliments. I would definitely hire Maverick Construction again!!
