Howard came out late in the day and very methodically traced the problem to a drywall screw that had bisected the phone wire and caused a short. He quickly repaired it and the problem was resolved. His rates were very reasonable, and we were grateful for his quick response and willingness to come out late in the day. We would definitely hire him again!
Description of Work: Our telephone line went dead and we needed to find someone quickly to troubleshoot it, as our provider (Comcast) does not provide inside wire maintenance.

Howard Goldberg arrived on time to give us an estimate and said he could do the work right now if we wanted him to do it. The estimate he gave us was very reasonable and we decided to have him do the work. He was very thorough and did the work in an expedited manner. While he was here, he also consulted on a future job and did a minor repair to our outside lights.
Description of Work: The roof tie that connects the main power line to the house broke, and we needed to have a new one installed.

Howard is great. He listens to what we would like to do and then makes suggestions on how to do it best or more cost effectively. He was very polite and my wife was always comfortable when he was around. there was never any cleanup once he left, even when significant wallboard cutting was involved. After the second job my painter asked, "where did you find a drywall guy willing to come out and do such good patch work on such a small job?" We are about to install a generator and remodel the basement. He has stopped out 3 times to help me plan the job, explain how we can get the most out of the generator while remaining within code, and even took the time to suggest lighting, outlet and switch layouts.
Description of Work: Howard has done work for me on two occasions and we are about to do another job. The first was bringing major work done by a previous home owner up to code and the second was general wiring including added recessed lights in an 18' ceiling.

Overall, the job went well. The work was completed in two days & the overall quality of the work was good. However, there were two issues. One was the transfer switch was not securely anchored (attached to just one stud in the wall; it can be moved if pushed on). It does function without issue so this seems to be a minor problem. The other issue was a little more serious. The outside connection to the ComEd power line was only a temporary connection. ComEd noted the problem & fixed it while addressing a power outage (I had no idea). On the plus side a nice power cord was provided to connect the generator to the transfer switch & great care was taken in making sure adequate grounding was provided.
Description of Work: Replaced main fuse box with a breaker box. Installed a transfer switch for a generator.

Howard is a very friendly guy, and it's obvious he's a very competent electrician. He determined that a short length of flexible conduit in our attic (for an exhaust fan) was short enough to be within code. He found that a length of flexible conduit in our crawlspace was out of code as it was too long. He replaced the flexible conduit with rigid conduit and brought it up to code. This is the second time we've used Howard and each time we've been very satisfied with his work.
Description of Work: He checked two potential electrical issues identified by the home inspector hired by the buyer of our home. One issue he found to be in compliance with the electrical code, the other issue he repaired.

I really can't say enough good things about Howard's work. He saw where I placed my TV and chair in the basement and realized that's were I wanted outlets and made it happen. He was also speedy in diagnosing what the issues were with my previous garage's outlets. It's hard for me to say what impresses me more -- his ability to quickly diagnose issues or his ability to speedily implement the solution. Plus, he gave me tips and electrical advice the entire time he worked. Believe me. He's seen whatever residential electrical issues you have. He knocked these jobs out in less than four hours and that included drive-time to Menards and two houses and I was talking to him the whole time. Get him; you won't be disappointed. He only asked for $320.00 for all his work. I paid him $400.00 when the shock wore off. He shows up on time and is both incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Thanks, Howard.
Description of Work: I just bought a new house. Howard Goldberg, the owner, gave me an overall assessment of the state of the present wiring in my new home. He then installed two new outlets in the basement. One using rigid conduit and one using Romex. He also capped an outside outlet that was powering a former hot tub and removed the previous wiring as the hot tub was sold before I moved in to the house. In addition, six outlets in my previous home's garage never worked, and he added a GFI outlet and rewired each outlet as the wiring was loose.

Howard was right on time and very friendly, considered my dog molested him upon entry. I showed Howard exactly what we wanted and told him that we were planning on replacing the sink and counter, so if he had to drill, to go ahead. He attempted to use what my husband had purchased, but it wasn't fitting right, so he suggested just using a switch instead of a button. Howard ran to Ace hardware (a mile away) to get the right switch and came back quickly. He explained the type of switch he bought and why he chose that over other styles. He arrived at 9am and had the job finished and cleaned up by 11:15am. The last 15 minutes he was drilled by my father in law (who is quite handy, just not very electrical) on what he was doing, tools he used, and the choices he made. Again, Howard was friendly and courteous. I am VERY please with the job he did and would ABSOLUTELY recommend him. We have a couple other electrical jobs we need done and we will absolutely call him again.
Description of Work: Howard installed a new garbage disposal and put in an switch for the ancient garbage disposal that had a KEY you had to insert into the hole and twist for it to turn on.

Howard has done all our electrical work for years and he is the only person we trust in our house. He is dependable, trustworthy, very reasonable in his rates, and always delivers what he promises, if not more. We are always thrilled with the quality of his work. He has been able to do things that other electricians have told us are impossible to do.
Description of Work: Howard rerouted our cable to another wall and hung our TV over the masonry fireplace. He had to hang the TV bracket and hook up all the equipment and hide all the wires and did a flawless job.

Years ago, out of ignorance, I mis-wired the three-way and four-way switches in my kitchen and hallway when I replaced them for purely cosmetic reasons. I let this go with the intention of fixing them at a later point. Years passed. I recently wanted to replace two battery operated smoke detectors and discovered there was wiring in the ceiling to supply them with power and even connect them so if one smoke detector goes off the other smoke detector would as well and their batteries would be for backup power during a power failure. I correctly wired the downstairs smoke detector but the upstairs smoke detector didn’t get power. I began asking our IT Manager at work about three-way switches and he immediately gave me the name and number for Howard Goldberg. Normally, he would just tell me how to fix the problem myself. I called Howard on a Tuesday and he came out the next day. It took him about thirty minutes to diagnosis and solve the problems I had created by replacing the switches but wiring them exactly as they had been rather than correctly as the new switches required the red, white, and black wires to be connected differently. Howard corrected all of this, checked all my wiring’s connections, re-installed the upstairs smoke detector, and checked my downstairs smoke detector. He finished it off by fixing the three-way switches in the kitchen. I first met Howard at work when he ran a new circuit in a wiring closet during the installation of fiber to the building. It’s an industrial wiring closet, so you need to know what you’re doing. The wiring rack is taller than I am. So I have seen him work in a business and residential setting. He stayed well over an hour at my house, giving me tips on wiring and the trades and making sure everything was working correctly. Keep in mind, he drove all the way from Libertyville, IL to Kenosha, WI to take this job. Definitely use him. I am thrilled to have found him. I will use him again for other projects. If you are in a residential or business setting and you need electrical work done at an extremely fair price, get Howard. My entire bill was $135.00. He could have easily charged more and I would have been happy. I’ve found my new electrician. If you need someone good, give him a call right away. I’ve already told two people at my job who are going to ask him to do residential work.

Howard Goldberg introduced himself to our family on the first week that we moved into our 1960s-era home. Howard was on his way home from work, and since we live relaitively close-by, he welcomed us to the neighborhood, introduced himself as a neighbor, and offered us his card/services for any future electrical needs that we might have. That was October. Fast forward to April, and here come the heavy rains. Our new-to-us home took on water and everything that was in the finished basement that had just gotten unpacked, got packed back up and moved into the garage . After a few weeks of cleanup and demo, we got a few quotes for installation of a sump pump and learned that we had to have a dedicated circuit for the sump, which meant we had to get an outlet nearby and wire pulled back to the electric panel. We checked Angie's List, called two highly rated electrical contractors in our area to estimate this small job, and one was Howard. Howard's bid was slightly lower than the competitor's and since he had favorable reviews, along with the fact that he made the first step to introduce himself back in October, we decided to go with him. We're glad we did. In scoping out the job, Howard indicated that he would install the conduit and pull the wires needed for the sump pump. He also mentioned that he would pull a couple extra strands of wire for any future eletrical needs. On the afternoon of install, I took off from work so that I could be available if any questions were needed. Ok, I wanted to watch what was being done (I have little practical electrical experience). Howard wasn't bothered by my presence nor my questions. Along the way, Howard explained what he was doing, which I really appreciated. He was very careful in his work and took the time to ensure that the conduit run was straight, even though it is in the crawl space. I'm confident that Howard would have been that careful with his work even if I wasn't in the crawl space with him. :) The last thing I'd like to mention is that Howard took the time to fix something in the electrical panel that wasn't part of the original job, but that he had found when he opened it up. And he didn't even charge me for it!

I called him on Monday and was able to schedule a time for him to come out that Thursday. This was a small job - an outlet existed in the area from our previous range hood, however our new one did not plug in and had to be hard wired in. This was a borderline DIY project for a somewhat handy person, but I decided not to do it because I didn't want to put unecessary holes in the wall (which I would later need to patch) and I didn't want my house to burn down due to my lack of experience doing electrical work. Howard arrived and had it completed within 20-30 minutes. He was very friendly and was willing to answer some questions that I had, unrelated to this job. He struck me as a very competent and trustworthy guy and I won't hesitate to hire him again if the need arises.

I originally called Howard from Angie's list because I had lights that weren't working consistently in my kitchen. At that time (mid-summer) he noticed that we had multiple extension cords running throughout my 1929 house for air conditioners--I needed them on different circuits, otherwise they'd blow the breakers. He suggested adding some more circuits and heavy duty plugs--ones with three-prongs! He'd done so well with that--that when I was putting in a basement bathroom from scratch, he was the first person I called. He even helped us decide what we needed in the bathroom. He suggested the tile heater mat which is great on a cold day in Chicago--plus he explained we didn't need sconces and overhead lights at the mirror. He put a light in the shower, several can lights around the room and multiple GFI outlets for those pesky curling irons, toothbrushes and blow dryers. He did an excellent job--and while he was here finishing things up--I mentioned a plug that wasn't working in my bedroom. He rewired the box and fixed it without charging me extra! He's not the cheapest out there--but he's fairly priced and he doesn't mind checking things out without charging you. I consider him an excellent electrician and a great tradesman. I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants the job done right the first time. When we get ready to do the rest of the basement, we'll be calling him--even though there are all sorts of deals through Angie's List, Groupon, Living Social, and so on. I trust Howard absolutely and his work.
Description of Work: Howard has fixed some intermittently working lights in my kitchen, run new electric for air conditioners that were single circuits, upgraded my service from 120 to much higher amps (not actually sure) and wired a new bathroom in the basement with electric mat under the tile, multiple light fixtures including one in the shower and around the room, plus new GFIs--none of which existed because the bathroom didn't.

Howard was very responsive throughout the process (from quoting to job completion) & returned all phone calls in a timely fashion. During the quoting process Howard was extremely thorough in his evaluation. He removed the panel from the old fuse box & inspected the connections, went out in our crawlspace to find a place to hook up a ground circuit & explained everything that was needed to complete the job in great detail. Once G&H Electric was selected to the the work, both Howard & the other electrician working on the job, Greg were very professional & took plenty of time to explain the work being done. The quality of the work was excellent & everything was cleaned up properly at work completion. Howard was very concerned about safety & made sure everything was brought up to current code. I work definitely use G&H Electric for any future electrical work & have already recommended their services to a number of people.
Description of Work: Upgraded electrical service which included replacing the fuse box with a breaker box, running a ground line (house was not grounded) & replacing the meter box along with the related pole. Also installed a transfer switch for a generator & fabricated an associated power cord for generator hook-up.

I was very pleased with the work. Howard made some great suggestions about the lights and I'm very happy we took his advice. He was on time, cleaned up completely, explained everything he was doing and what our options were. He stuck to his estimate also. He's a little slow to respond to phone and email, perhaps because its a small company. But if you can be patient and wait a few days for a response, you'll get great service from somebody who knows what he's doing. I've recommended him to several people, including my parents.
