Richard is very professional, responsive and reliable. All the work is with excellent quality and passed the village inspection without any issues. All his employees/workers are very well experienced. The drywall patching at joints is excellent -- a new person cannot identify the partition. He answered/replied all my calls and always tries to maintain good relations. The cost of service is really worth it - when compared with the quality of work at the end,

If he didn't want to do the job, he could've at least told me as much. Sent one follow-up email and dismissed the company as being unprofessional, due to their lack of follow-up.

Everything went great. The crew arrived on time and worked throughout the day. The workers, as well as the owner, checked in with me multiple times to ensure my satisfaction. Everything was cleaned up and left in great condition.
Description of Work: Yellow Square replaced rotting fascia board over porch and garage. In addition, they rebuilt a rotting column and remodeled the existing columns to match the new style. All fascia boards and garage perimeter were wrapped in aluminum for weather protection. Yellow Square also replaced broken caulk around door entries and painted exterior wood features on the house.

The project went really, really well. The wall looks fantastic, and Richard was able to take a difficult/nonstandard project and make things easy for me. The project required (a) working with our building association, (b) finding materials that would match the existing look of our building, and (c) coming up with a strong/durable solution that would work for an apartment terrace under difficult constraints (limited places to fasten the wall to the building). Richard handled all of that -- at a very fair price (I got multiple estimates) & with little effort required on my end (I wasn't even in the city when the work was planned & completed). The wall looked really good. Separately, Richard has done great work for me in installing an external kitchen exhaust through our roof (we are on the top floor of an apartment building), in addition to other work. He's always been quick to respond to calls/emails. I've really appreciated his help over the years.
Description of Work: Designed/created a corrugated sheet metal subdividing wall for our apartment terrace.
The stairs look great! I still think about how much I love them each time I walk up and down them. Overall, was a very good experience. Richard was very responsive--both on initial contact and throughout the job. He brought his head carpenter to the estimate and together they figured out a creative way (with winder stairs) to bring the stairs up to code--all of the other contractors I contacted couldn't figure out a way to do it (and it was obviously very important to me!). We were able to schedule the job quickly and we only had to be out of the house for a few days while they built the carpenter stairs structure. The work was very high-quality and when I was bothered by one of the boards on one stair (due to the coloring of the grain), Richard replaced it. The work took about a week longer than planned, but they cleaned up each night (and we were at work during the day) so it wasn't an issue for us. Only drawback was that I had picked out newel posts and spindles before the work started and Richard realized when it was already underway that they wouldn't work--had I known I may have pushed out the work to do a special order in the style I wanted. We ended up going with a simpler style as a result, but it looks great (and I now question if the style I wanted would have looked as good!).
Description of Work: Demolished existing stairs (basement to 2nd floor), built new stairs structure, expanded 2nd floor landing, installed and stained/painted stairs, spindles, etc., drywalled underneath the new stairs, and painted the whole stairwell. Also coordinated some changes to the electrical to add lights & switches to the stairs and the removal of some hideous radiators on the stairs.

I sent a message to Yellow Square Corporation asking if their carpentry services included repairing a cracked section of roof truss. Richard responded the same afternoon. Richard stopped by on Saturday morning 4/18 (Saturday was most convenient for me) to size up the repair and provide me with the cost. He was punctual, courteous, and showed me a diagram of how the truss would be repaired. He returned on Monday 4/20 to complete the work.
Description of Work: Structurally reinforced a section of roof truss that had a crack.
Richard was amazing!! I will definitely use him without hesitation for any future projects and I will highly recommend him to anyone. Why I chose YellowSquare as my remodeling contractor I interviewed about 5 contractors. Of all of them, Richard was the only one that really impressed me. The three things he did that really impressed me during our first meeting were: 1. He brought his tape measure and took measurements of the rooms. This clearly showed that he was interested in the work and wanted to make sure that he was giving me an accurate contract. None of the other contractors even bothered to measure the rooms 2. When I showed him a problem with the bathroom door, he immediately fixed it. Apparently, the issue was a simple hinge bolt that needed to be tightened. I had shown the other contractors too (Richard was the last contractor that I interviewed) and they just nodded and said they will add that work to the contract. Little did I know that it was a quick little fix 3. He sent his detailed contract within 48 hours. I had to chase some of the other contractors before they sent me their estimates. Even then, they sent me such a high-level estimate that it was difficult for me to know what work was included. Richard was very responsive and precise in listing all the work to be done in his very first contract draft My experience with Richard during the remodeling work 1. He delivered ON TIME!!!! Richard completely finished every single task by the deadline on the contract. I had zero issues with extended dates, etc. 2. He has great taste and experience. Given my busy schedule, i didnt want to be bothered with little details such as choosing the color of the tile grout. I focused on the big things like choosing granite, cabinets, fixtures?he took care of all the other little details. Some other contractors would have been calling me a million times for little things. I trusted his taste and decisions 3. He is honest. I did not have to deal with escalating and hidden costs, etc. He was very honest with all finances. If he bought something, he gave me the receipts. We stayed within budget and any extra expenses were things we pre-agreed on 4. His guys are very courteous and experienced. He had a lead man - Robert - who is great. They were respectful of all the condo rules (and there were many!) 5. Even after the contract was over, he still comes by if I notice something. he does not complain and is more than happy to come fix whatever you are not happy with 6. Lastly, he listens! if you complain about anything, he listens and takes immediate action. I did not like the first job that his painter did and he made sure they kept redoing the painting until I was satisfied. He was merciless:) Overall, I was very happy and satisfied with his work!
Description of Work: Entire condo remodeling - complete remodeling of 2 bathrooms (contractor price excludes cost of vanity cabinet, lights, tiles and fixtures) - engineered hardwood floor installation throughout condo (contractor price excludes hardwood and CORC) - complete remodeling of kitchen (contractor price excludes granite, kitchen cabinets and fixtures) - painting entire condo (contractor price excludes price of paint) - removal of popcorn ceiling - installation of ceiling lights (contractor price excludes price of light fixtures) Contractor price does not include any appliances. Condo is 1680 square feet.
Richard and his crew were very professional, timely, and courteous. His crew were great with our two big enthusiastic dogs (making sure they closed the gates, cleaned up the back yard so there wasn't any garbage they could get into.) They worked on Saturdays as well. We had some unforeseen issues with rotting boards behind the drywall in the basement and Richard made sure that they were handled quickly and repaired. We felt that the work was well done and that he was honest the entire time with us. We would use Yellow Square Cooperation again without hesitation.
Description of Work: The Yellow Square Group fixed our sill plate, replaced rotted boards in basement, installed new windows in basement, and installed a flood light in the back yard on our garage.
I cannot say enough good things about Ryszard and his team. They did a great job! We started the job in February 2014 with the basement bathroom addition. His team did an outstanding job getting the new bathroom installed and adding a large storage closet. They then worked in phases to complete the work in the rest of the house including first floor bathroom, powder room, 2nd floor guest bathroom (including the installation of a skylight) and the master bathroom (including changing an exterior window). Lastly, they completed the kitchen. The wood work, carpentry, electrical and plumbing work were all done top notch. We love the tile work they completed in the bathrooms and the kitchen and, importantly, the family survived the remodeling project without too many scars or bad memories. Ryszard and his team did a great job keeping the house and work space clean, as we were living in the house at the same time the work was being completed. Their attention to detail, consideration for our living space and general demeanor each day, made working with Yellow Square a great experience. Yellow Square's quality of work was top notch! I will say that mistakes happen in all projects and, it was no different with Yellow Square -- although these mistakes were few. Many times, rather than me noticing them, Ryszard would see something he was not happy with and get it addressed before I saw it or said something. In cases, when I had an issues with something working through this problem was straight forward. Ryszard was focused on making sure we were happy and executing the plans we had agreed on. When changes were necessary, we worked through an agreeable fix. When mistakes were made, Ryszard quickly addressed and remedied the issue. This was important because we had a tight timeline to work against and Ryszard was able to keep to the schedule. If the change was due to a change in scope on my part, Ryszard let me know and explained what the change in cost and timing would be for the project. In cannot think of one issue that was not addressed in a straight forward and fashion and that we did not come to an agreeable solution. Lastly, Ryszard has high integrity and keeps his promises. I found I could depend on Ryszard time and time again in working through tough issues against commitments he had made and keeping us on schedule. He also did a great job in completing our remodel. His team has a high degree of pride in their work and showed great skill in completing a difficult job. I enthusiastically endorse Yellow Square and recommend you consider them for your next remodeling project.
Description of Work: Remodeled home and added a basement bathroom and closet. Remodeling included 3 bathrooms, one powder room, the master bathroom and the kitchen. Also, installed new interior lights and hardware and repainted doors.

Yellow Square was excellent. Richard was helpful, fair and informative during the whole process, and made sure to tie up all the loose ends of the job at the end. No construction project goes entirely without unforseen issues popping up along the way, and we had a couple minor ones, but Richard took care of them (at no additional cost). When a worker failed to complete a part of the job promptly, Richard replaced him with another worker. We had a small-to-medium size contracting job and found it difficult to find someone who would a) return our calls, b) get an estimate promptly and c) come in at price, and Yellow Square did all three. If you have a similar-sized job and are tired of contractors giving you the runaround, look no further than here.

Ryszard did a great job installing 2 custom vinyl windows in my upstairs master bedroom/bath. He was great about giving me different price points for different options. Both windows were unique sizes and the bedroom window had an arch on the top so they needed to be custom made. It took a while for the work to get done because they had to be ordered, but in the end it was worth it. Ryszard and his partner were great craftsmen and total pros. They sealed the windows and finished up the outside with aluminum flashing and it all looks very nice. They were also very thorough about cleaning up.

Ryszard did exactly what he said he would do - he was very prompt in coming out to perform the work on schedule and completed in on-time. His work was neat and professional, and most important - it worked, the leak was corrected.
Description of Work: We had a small leak and Ryszard was extremely thorough in identify the source of the water infiltration to make certain that the leak was properly fixed and sealed. He did testing to replicate the leak in advance of fixing it to be sure of the source of the leak. He was very professional and easy to work with. He was very fair to us and explained everything very well. And, he fixed the leak!

Richard does quality work, is very professional and courteous. However, neither he nor his partner Kamil are responsive (often would take weeks to return my call, or even to answer when I kept calling once every few days). This was painfully frustrating. If he had not come recommended by a close family member, we would have gone with someone else much sooner, and we regret not doing that. Part I: They did quality work on the basement waterproofing, but there were 3 major issues: 1) They left a huge pile of muddy debris on our patio and they were not careful to keep it off the grass (which turned white and nearly died). I had to call 3 times before Kamil finally sent someone to remove the debris (mistake to give Kamil our full payment at the end of the day they did the work but before removing the debris. He had promised to come the next day, but after 3 calls, they did not remove it until at least a week later. 2) Richard accused me of not paying them 2 weeks after I gave the full payment to his partner Kamil (very disorganized, horrible communication... you better get your facts straight before saying something like that). 3) Richard agreed to start the basement waterproofing work on a Friday at 9:00AM, and later confirmed this in an email AND over the phone (probably was not even listening to me and did not even read my whole email... since he appeared to be stretched way too thin at a super busy time). However, his guys showed up at 7AM instead. Since we had not actually moved in yet, we did not even know they were there until I arrived at 9AM sharp. He later accused me of being 2 hours late, and his guys (wrongly so) made us look like idiots by complaining about this in front of our interior designer (a family friend) who arrived early for a 9AM apt with my wife and gave us a piece of her mind for supposedly being 2 hours late, when in reality we were on time but Yellow Square got the time wrong (despite my confirming it 3 times!) Part II: Basement Remodeling. Richard started out by giving us an outrageously high quote ($9K inclu matl to level the floor and tile the 15' X 17' basement rec room). Then, we changed our scope and managed after a couple weeks to get him to give us a reasonable remodeling quote of roughly $2,200 to insulate, install drywall and prime in the basement rec room. To make a long story short, he kept putting us off for about 2 months until he finally was honest and told me his drywall guys were not interested in the business because they had a big $40K job and didn't care about our business. This was very frustrating since my wife is pregnant and those 2 lost months were crucial to getting the basement ready for our new child. That being said, Richard did give us some good advice for free that I really appreciated about a couple other projects we initially wanted to include in his scope of work. However, his floor squeak advice was that we would have to replace all our oak floors for Beaucoup Bucks. Later, I ended up fixing All the squeaks myself for $56 with the products from Squeaky Floor.com Bottom Line: Yellow Square does quality work, but you will likely pay a 30-40% price premium. The basement work was good, but I would not use them again due to their horrible responsiveness and poor communication. As a businessperson, I expect people to promise a date and stick with it, not to "disappear" and drag a project out for months.
Description of Work: Installed Sump Pitt with Dual Pumps and Drain Tile. Was supposed to do all our Basement Remodeling work but that never happened because they dragged us along for 2 months, and then Richard was finally honest enough to say their drywall guys were not interested in doing the work for the price he had quoted us (had a $40K job, didn't care about our basement).

The work started immediately and was done right on time, even though the timeline was only 3 weeks for ALOT of work. His workers even worked on saturdays. I also had my own painter and tile installer, and his crew worked alongside with them great. Richard always answered my phone calls or called me back immediately if he was unable to answer. He also was great with text messages, if I was not able to talk on the phone. The work was done in a very timely manner and looks amazing. I am an interior designer and have used Yellow Square at several of my past clients' homes. I would recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: I am an interior designer and have used Yellow Square to do several types of renovations at different clients' homes. He is very quick, efficient, and responsive. His costs are fair. I recently used him on my own personal home renovations. I only had 3 weeks available for several major renovations including refinishing my hardwood oak floors, adding 2 stairs, raising all the walls in my condo 3 feet, framing out and adding 3 doors, installing all new door hardware, switching out 4 sets of closet doors, extending my kitchen island, adding a ceiling soffit, moving and adding several j-boxes for new chandeliers, demo, adding LED undercabinet lighting in my kitchen cabinets, switching out my shower head, installing all new plumbing accessories, adding a garbage disposal, installing a new kitchen sink/faucet, removing existing laminate countertops, installing new marble countertops, and moving several other electrical components.

YS WAS QUICK AND EFFICIENT IN SOLVING MY PROBLEM.
Description of Work: Richard from Yellow Square was very helpful. Although this was a very small job compared to what he us used on getting, he spent the time explaining my options like it was one of his big jobs. I truly appreciated his time and expertise. My project was specific to the garage wall which faced an alley. the base of the wall had a crack and a couple of rats made their way inside the garage. due to the urgent nature of my situation, Richard and his crew came the next day to repair the wall and sealed the hole.
Our painter noticed that the baseboards in our basement were buckling, so he removed a small piece of drywall and found mold on the paneling and drywall. I called several contractors to look at the problem, but I had a hard time finding someone who could respond quickly because we wanted to move in the following week. Richard promptly answered his phone when I called and told me that he could meet me the next day. Richard arrived on time and surveyed the basement for any more signs of water damage. I explained my time constraints and asked when he would be able to give me an estimate. Richard said right now and pulled out his measuring tape. He gave me a quote on Tuesday and started work Thursday morning at 7am. Around 10am Thursday morning,, Richard called to tell me that they found a problem and wanted to meet at the house as soon as possible. His workers had found a hole under the window that was not sealed as well as weak studs. By the time I arrived to see the problem, Richard was there and had already purchased the necessary materials to fix the situation. So the addition of cementing the hole and adding sister studs did not slow down the project at all. Actually, he finished one day ahead of time. He and his workers were pleasant, did an excellent job, and cleared the basement of debris and sawdust.
Description of Work: Removed drywall, old paneling, and the baseboard in the basement on two walls. Replaced the drywall and baseboards and added insulation.

Richard is very professional, honest, on time, responsive and patient. We had Richard (Owner of Yellow Square Corp.) do a very small job for us this past summer in our living room. I had these shelves from Pottery Barn that became a real pain to hang so I got his name from a friend because I didn't have a handyman. Richard typically does much larger construction jobs (remodeling, building), but he was completely fine with helping me out with this small task since my husband and I are not handy at all. He did a great job with the shelves. Then this November I reached out to him again to do a few small things around our condo, which again he was very willing and responsive even though he had many larger projects going on. The same day he was scheduled to come to our home we found water and mold in our crawl space in the basement so once he arrived we hit him with a much bigger issue. Richard is full of knowledge and contacts which make him a great problem solver and resource. He provided us with multiple recommendations and options to proceed forward with our water issue while always being very up front, patient and honest with us. After two weeks of investigating the issue, digging into our foundation, we found out what we needed to do and what was worth the money. Richard was very open and honest on what he felt we needed to do to solve the problem without having us spend a ton of money to fix it. He is always very neat and respectful too of your home. He is a man of many traits, big or small jobs, and he if doesn't have an answer for you he will do the research.
Description of Work: SImple jobs to more complicated. Richard hung some shelves in our family room. He has also installed a sump pump in our basement in a new location so he had to dig and route it to the outside. He is an contractor so he brought in a plumber and someone to do the drywall, but he participates in the process and is there the entire time.

We recently moved into what we thought was our dream home... only to discover a nightmare water leak that had gone undetected by the home inspector. The water damage was fairly substantial and resulted in a large portion of our kitchen to be remediated. Floors had to be dug up to access leaking pipe, cupboards removed, walls realigned, etc. We contacted a number of companies for estimates and solutions to our problem. Richard was the one that stuck out... From the first time we contacted him, he was responsive, enthusiastic, and very creative in help to find a solution to this terrible predicament that we were faced with. We eventually settled on Richard's company Yellow Square Co, not necessarily because of price, but primarily because we felt that he would do a great job and also be understanding and accommodating during the rebuilding. We were absolutely delighted with our decision. Richard's team was very profession. They always arrived on time every morning, and were very courteous and accommodating. They were extra careful to clean up and protect our possessions during the renovation. Most importantly... their work was top-notch... paying special attention to every detail... including matching the color stains of new floors and trimmings to the original. The extra attention to detail really made Yellow Square stand out. The construction lasted 2 weeks. Yes, it was a big project. Throughout the experience, I constantly remembered Richard assuring me that the quality of the work will be the same as if "this project was for his own home"... and it really was.We had a few unforeseen expenses come up once we stripped the floors and evaluated the damage first hand. But, Richard was very accommodating in making the additional expenses as bearable as possible. At the end of the day, the interaction with any contractor is a business one. They are there to provide a professional service, and to make a profit in doing so. Richard is one of the few that also adds a level of compassion and understanding in his interactions with his clients. I highly recommend Yellow Square.

Now let me talk about Richard. This is a person who truly loves his job and people. He makes himself available at all times and returns calls promptly. Since he works with various interior designers, he has wonderful ideas. He even took the time to meet me at stores to help pick out bathroom fixtures and granite. Even when the project was over I did not hesitate to call him with a SOS in the kitchen. Again, he helped immediately. My husband and I recommend Yellow Square Construction. With all the work we have done through the years, this is the first time I was as happy with the contractor at the end of the project as in the beginning.
Description of Work: Yellow Square Construction remolded our master bathroom. This required a complete demolition, down to the studs. We have had various projects done in the 29 years we lived in our house, but this has been a remarkable experience. When Richard says "no problem" he means it. Not a day went by when we did not have workers in our house. They arrived at 7am. and when they left at the end of the day the area was spotless. From his electrician, plumber to the carpenter all the work was first class. We were totally comfortable not being home during the day.

Since we had such a positive experience with Yellow Square Construction for our bathroom remodeling job, we asked Richard to do our master bedroom.....and we were as pleased as before. The room had not been painted in 25 years! The work was excellent. The floor was a perfect match to the floors in the house. The walls and doors were also a quality job. This was all done while we're on vacation. We came home to find quality work and the area perfectly cleaned. I also had a special surprise....a vase full of flowers....Richard knew I was coming home on my birthday. I am not making this up! Once again a great experience.
Description of Work: We had our master bedroom painted which included new doors, the removal of the old floor and Instillation of new hardwood floors.

Very well. Richard is so courteous and everyone he uses is trustworthy and professional. He was patient in continuously explaining all of the problems we were encountering and why he chose to repair everything in a specific way. He will not cut corners, everything is done correctly. You can have complete confidence in the end product that he will produce.
Description of Work: Richard from Yellow Square is a great contractor who I recommend without reservation. He is the most professional contractor I've worked with, friendly, thorough, patient, and nice. I've posted 3 reviews for him, this was the first time we hired his company. We own a brick townhouse in a Chicago city complex known for water problems with wood trim elements, including windows and decorative columns around porches that are beneath 2nd story decks. We purchased our home 4 years prior and had already had the house painted once and the columns repaired and repainted. It was time for the house to be repainted, the columns were deteriorating terribly, and we had an ant issue. We originally hired Yellow Square to replace 9 wooden decorative columns with new fiberglass ones, address a problem at the base of 4 of them, and repaint the house. Once the work began, Richard's crew uncovered some very wet joists supporting our 2nd floor deck. With our permission, he opened up the porch ceiling to reveal significant water damage as well as original construction not done to code (joists were not reinforced where they met the wall). It was painful to deal with our original estimate going up 40% as a result, but he explained patiently his assessment and how he would repair it in a way to prevent future problems. When scraping the windows, his team originally thought 4 frames were going to be a complete failure and need replacement. The wood was so rotten that ants were nesting in the window frames. His skilled carpenter was able to save our windows by custom crafting the rotted elements to fit perfectly back in - saving us $7-10K in replacement costs. He also identified some other water issues that could be coming from limestone trim on our roof parapet and did some caulking/sealing for us on the roof as well. The finished porch and trim paint jobs are beautiful and I don't worry at all about issues reappearing given how thorough the work was done. My neighbor's units look a little sad next to ours now.
