+ 1 moreV. J. Killian was reliable and very professional. We had a Bradford White hot water heater installed and an E. L. Mustee & Sons Utilitwin laundry tub put in. The replaced 2 valves to the washing machine, too at a small additional cost.

+ -1 moreHoward is great at diagnosing, the problem. He has a vast familiarity with these machines and saved me buying an entirely new furnace (which I was told I had to do with another company) and ordered just the part I needed. Great experience.
Description of Work: First time, checked furnace for awful noise and determined it needed a new part. Second time, checked noise I thought was bad and determined there was a piece of paper there, removed it and charged little.

+ 1 moreThey are on time, and they don't give you a long window to wait. They wear booties when they come into the house. I would trust them to come in even if I wasn't home. The crew has been with the company for a long time, they seem to keep their people around and treat them well. They are very well spoken and easy to understand.

Description of Work: We used to use this company when we lived in Lake Bluff 15 years ago. We recently moved back and are experiencing problems with the HVAC system. We searched Angie's list for an HVAC service company and decided on Killian because we had used them in the past. We scheduled service for two weeks ago but the weather was too cold to test the unit. We rescheduled for yesterday, waited all day for them to arrive but no one showed up or called. This morning my husband called to find out why they did not show up or call and was told that we "were on the Schedule". No explanations about the "no-show" from yesterday. When we tried to get them to tell us if someone would come out today, all they would say was that we were on the schedule. When my husband asked to speak with a manger he was told there was no one else in the office. He was told that the schedule was organized geographically and that they were not sure whether anyone would be out today. even though we were "on the schedule" for yesterday and no one showed up or called. We were planning on having them do plumbing work as well but we are so disgusted with the poor customer service that we are going to use someone else for both the HVAC and the plumbing. We understand that this is air-conditioning "season" but we were scheduled for over two weeks and to not even receive a call when they did not arrive as scheduled is just poor service. And then to be given no assurances that they would come out today when they did not show up as scheduled yesterday is unacceptable.

+ -1 moreI found them reasonable and honest and I've been using them for ten years now and I have never had any cause to doubt a recommendation that they've made. The people that they send out seem very skilled and knowledgeable about their work which is nice and very professional. I bought a new furnace and an air conditioner from them for all the right reasons at the right time. They were very honest on why I needed a new one and I actually confirmed that what they were saying was actually accurate. They had plenty of opportunities to screw me over and they never did. Their response time is very good. They obviously have an emergency service but I don't use them but I usually get them fairly quickly when I need something. They are very knowledgeable and professional. It's the only company I would consider using honestly.

+ 0 moreWe found a hot water heater leaking around 10 pm. We were able to turn off the water and wait for service the next day. VJ Killian contacted us first thing in the morning (no emergency call back was available), and we were able to schedule for two water heaters to be installed in the same day! Two people showed up - on time and got to work immediately. All of the work was done within a few hour time window as well. Very happy with the work and was pleased to find out that the cost was a bit higher, but because the units they had suggested were of a higher quality. I am willing to spend more to ensure that what we get is better than builder quality.
Description of Work: Replacement of water heaters due to leakage and age.

+ 0 moreThey were professional. Came on time. They charge per 15 min increments after the first hour, so saves money. The outside faucet job wa shard, and the plumber had to call in his manager for help, but they didn't charge us for the manager's time.Called them for a followup and they came immediately and fixed the issue. Didn't charge us for it.
Description of Work: Sump pump and back up sump pump replaced. Had to change the outside faucet and broken pipe on the inside of the house.

+ -1 moreThe VJ Killian worker showed up when they said they would and unclogged the drain. He finished in 1/2 hour. I don't know what their hourly rate is but charges were $147 for labor and a $30 "rod charge". I asked about the rod charge and he said it was customary when using their rod equipment. I was surprised about that extra charge. I expect things like that to be included in the hourly rate. However, $177 wasn't too high and I am happy that they came out the day after I called and got my kitchen operational again.
Description of Work: Unclogged the kitchen drain pipe clog 25-35 feet down using a rod machine.

+ -1 moreMy central a/c simply stopped working on one of the hottest nights of the year... right before a holiday weekend. I called Killian at 745 AM on Friday morning and they promised that they would "put (me) on the list" for service that day. At 941 AM they called to confirm that I was the next call for the technician. The technician arrived within the hour and quickly assessed and repaired the problem (a burned out wire in the unit). I have used Killian for all of my heating / cooling / plumbing work over the past 20 years... and will continue to do so as they continually provide excellent service. I have always found them to be fair and reasonable with their pricing and they handle routine checks and maintenance, as well as "problems", breakdowns and emergencies in a professional, friendly, efficient manner.

+ -1 moreWe were gone all winter and, on checking the house, our son noticed that the house was cold and the thermostat would not turn on the furnace. Consequently, I contacted Killian who coordinated with our son. The first diagnosis of fallen insulation, proved wrong at the cost of $300. The next diagnosis was that the boiler, thirty four years old, had rusted out and an entire new unit was needed. The old boiler was removed and the new installed without a smudge anywhere in the basement. Very professional, although I asked for, but didn't receive, relief from the first invoice to replace the old insulation
Description of Work: .Rplaced 34 year old Weil-McLain boiler with new Weil McLain Boiler. Included was new venting cap on boiler connected to the exhaust stack.

+ -1 moreEvery time we have a plumbing problem we call VJ Killian. They practically live here! We have never used them for anything major, just a lot of minor jobs. We like everything about them. They are very prompt and do excellent work. Several of their plumbers have been here so many times they know our house. They all have done well for us and we have been using them for 30 years. We moved in here in 1979 and we have used them ever since.

+ 0 moreThis past Sunday evening, we noticed that the sump pump was not working properly - splashing water all over the pit in the garage. With concerns of heavy snow melting in the upcoming warmer weather, I called VJ Killian because they have 24 hours emergency service. The on-call technician Richard called back promptly, asked some details about the problem, and then discussed options we have. He was very professional and honest in answering my questions. After talking with him, I feel the problem we had was not truly an emergency (although had the potential to become one). So, I told Richard that we would keep an eye on the water level over the night. If it gets out of control, we would call them immediately. It turned out that the snow melts at a much lower rate as mentioned by Richard, and the water did not overflow into the garage and basement, so we saved on unnecessary emergency cost. I really appreciate Richard's time and professionalism. I believe that a company with good employees like Richard deserves the A rating. Will definitely consider VJ Killian for my future plumbing needs.
