Despite a bit of a miscommunication and us canceling on him twice, Matt was extremely accommodating, went out of his way to fit us in, and did great work. They used plastic sheeting to protect the entire bathroom and had exhaust running to outside. The smell isn't as awful as expected after reading other reviews. Just smells like spray paint. Will update this review later about how well the finish holds up. Thanks again Matt!

And thank you for the review. The details that you gave are so important for all customers/members or not. I recently enrolled with the BBB. They have been soliciting me for 6+ years to sign up with them, I just thought the cost was to high. To all past and potential future customers. Please know that I am the office, I am the one that shows up to do the work. Also I am the person whom does all of the follow up when needed or required. This is my 18th year going well on 19. I am as many people say a perfectionist, but human ! I always do the best I can with everything I touch. Great Lakes Refinishing does about 275+ bathtubs a year. Tile refinishing and other bathroom projects are included. I can also paint the rest of your bathroom, ask for details about specialty bathroom drywall finishes. They are specifically designed for wet areas and they are pretty cool looking to. As the owner/operator I take pride in my work and have experience in many different areas of bathroom remodeling, maintenance and refinishing. Take your time in selecting your contractor, with my hands on experience and knowledge. You can ease your mind when hiring Great Lakes Refinishing. I have everything you need to start and finish your job. Matt Brown

After checking with a few companies I decided to go ahead with Great Lakes Refinishing. Matt arrived on time and did a great job. Everything was taped and cleaned up afterwards. The ONLY negative is that I was told it would take 4-6 hours while it took 8. But since I was in and out all day that was fine. The tub looks fantastic!

How did it goes? It went horrible! Started the job late, he was suppose to show up at 9:00am and did not arrive until 11:00am with some sobbing bs story. (truth was he scheduled two jobs at the same time) Even after arriving late with his training buddy who had no clue let alone any type of experiance they both left for lunch t 12:45pm are you serious... you arrived late, it took you forever to even bring the items to prep and you take a lunch... they did not arrive back from "lunch" until 1:40pm only to be informed MATT the main guy left because he "forgot" his spray gun... no you didnt you left to go put a second coat on the tub you were doing when you should have been at my house at 9:00am. So meanwhile I was left with his "helper" who was grunting and blowing all types of air because he couldnt tape properly, like I said this was his first day. I am a customer, a paying customer today is not the day to be showing someone all the how-tos and dos/donts. It took this guy 2 and 1/2 hours to tape...really! And to top it off he wanted to stand on top of my bathroom sink in order to tape. NO NO and NO... at this point I lost all patience... It is now 5:39pm Matt has now come back the 3 hour job took 7 and 1/2 hours they did not leave my house until 7:26pm. Oh and we are not done, after the two man crew left I started to clean up, sweep the floors mop etc... my wood floors that I just paid to get refinished were damaged by his "helper" who must have put the rag with chemicals on the floor which then ruined my wood floors in three different spots, not only were my floors damage cigerettes we smashed on my front porch in the window seal... these two guys are quite the character. NEVER EVER AGAIN! I don't smoke and dont appreciate having to clean up your nastyness. I sent Matt an email that night and I called Matt the very next morning to infom him of the damage and why'll he said it could be possible he stated he doubts it was him, that they did a very thorough job cleaning. Well, I left it at I will get a few quotes for the damage and we will be in touch. It turns out Matt did not like that he wanted to repair my hardwood floors himself... NO you barely made it through the job refinishing my tub you think I want you back in my house touching my wood floors, NO. That's when it became nasty. Matt accused me of my floors be a DYI when I in fact had a legit company come out and do the entire house and then Matt insulted me even more by saying he is not digging deep in his pockets just to cut me a check .HELLO... I didnt ask for any of that just simply wanted my floors back to the original state before his cirucs came through my house. Long story short since Matt wanted to be such a jerk about it, I had to go through the entire insurance process put in a claim and wait yes the whole nice yards all because I hired him and his clueless one man crew to refinish my tub. At the end of the day I would not advise anyone to use this company. Yes I will give him credit for refinishing my tub however the extra baggage and time I could have dealt without, def wasn't worth it, it was a nightmare and at the end he was rude, arrogant and disrespectful but then he tries to play the nice guy card NO I dont think so. Just be ready for all and anything if you do choose to move forward with this company.

The relevant facts are this. We worked very late the night before and had to go clean up the previous job and pick up the needed tools. I could not call the customer to inform of such facts because I only had an office phone #. When we arrived at the job site we found a badly damaged bathtub in dire need of repair before refinishing. After cleaning the tub I explained that the fiberglass body filler needed at least an hour to dry, so we took a lunch. Then came back sanded and re-coated the body filler with a finishing compound, this takes another hour to dry. In my haste to get to this customers house I did in fact forget the air cap for my gun in cleaning solution at the other job which was complete, I just forgot a 1 gallon bucket with parts for cleaning. All this other needless bashing is just that, poor Rob is being dissected for not being very efficient in his young new job. It was not his first day and masking is something that needed to be learned. I did not leave him to go work on a job I left him so A. He could learn the ropes and B. operating a roll of masking tape is not rocket science. Another words he could not hurt anything and yes again I did forget the air cap for my spray gun. The hard wood floor they would not even let me see, if the customer would have let me come back I assure everyone I could have repaired it. I have installed hard would flooring and refinished it. The customer stopped me short of saying anything because there vision in my opinion was clouded and after reading this I now know that I am right. I did comment on the fact that the varnish on the floor was likely a full gloss Minwax Varnish, not really meant for floors. I am not taking any of this as an insult, just a misunderstanding. The tub turned out great and the only other thing I could have done was watch things dry, nothing would have gone any faster. No way to make everyone happy all the time and do not appreciate anyone saying I am full of it, or giving a BS sob story. That is just plain rude. No contact phone # for SATURDAY and cannot wave my magic wand to make things dry faster. Facts being distorted to fit the customers disaster plan. This is nonsense and way beyond needed. I wish all of my Angie's list customers who like me the very best. Matt Brown

Called Matt to get a price and availability. We discussed options and the process, and he educated me on what it was, and what it was not. Had also contacted 2 other providers and with the Angies List discount his price was good, and his schedule worked for us. He came in, did the work, and the result looked great. Quick, easy and good quality.

We lost some time to a rain storm the night before that caused a delay and Matt needed to buy more stripping product because of the many layers on my tub. This is the second time I refinished this particular tub and I had previously refinished another tub at another home -- by far Matt's work was the best I have experienced. He knows how to do this and do this well. He refinished the tub and it looks terrific. I did the caulking by my own choice. Great bang for my dollar.

Very cool, thank you for the great review. Your tub was tough but steady hard work completed the project. I try very hard to be on time, yet because I do everything. And that means everything, phone, materials and work to make it simple. I am not always there at 9 am. On the + side of work I give every customer my complete attention and always do the best work I can. That has proven to be my strongest attribute to my deticated work ethic. Angie's List customers get me, not one of the guys. When I answer the phone it really is me that shows up. I look forward to serving Angie's List customers from now until I retire. Can everyone believe summer is almost over, we have about 70 days left. Definately not enough time spent with Noah my chocolate Lab. Boating and swimming are his favorite things in life. I am getting a bit off track but that is my stress relief. Best to all and have fun before it snows. Matt Brown Owner/Operaror and everything in between!

Matt and I discussed the potential work over the phone, and he was able to give me an accurate estimate of cost, so I gave him the go-ahead to do the work. He arrived on time with an assistant and got started right away. In all, the work to strip and finish the tub took about 4 hours, as Matt told me to expect. I believe drying time was 24 hours. The results are terrific. The tub looks good as new - shiny and bright As an added bonus, the bottom of the tub is textured, meaning I no longer have to mess with a plastic bathmat. The tub is original to the home and, over time, the stopper in the drain disappeared. I bought the home several years ago and have had to use a rubber stopper in order to fill the tub. You know the know kind...a white rubber stopper complete with a chain. Matt turned me onto a company who sell a cool fix for that problem. I ordered a new drain, in the finish of my choice, that glued right on top of the existing drain (with a built in adhesive) including an integrated pop-up stopper and a strainer. I bought a 2 piece set that included an overflow to match the drain and the total cost was around $50. Thanks for that tip Matt!

Unfortunately, I have a mixed review. Matt confirmed an appointment for Saturday, September 14th, called that morning to inform me he had some concerns about his dog due to recent surgery and he would have to take him to the vet so he would be arriving late. I have a dog, so I certainly understood this type of thing can come up. Matt came with Joe, very professional began to work right away. Around 2pm , Matt informed me he had to drive Joe home and he would stop and get something to eat and comeback. He explained that there was a space between where the tile ends and the tub that caused quite a gap and he recommended rather than caulking, it would be better to put in a border tile. I asked him if he did this and he said he did. I offered to get the tile and he said he would do that. I was impressed that he pointed this out to us. Matt left with Joe and then called approximately 2 hours later, said he was on Route 83 stuck in traffic and asked he could come Sunday morning. He arrived Sunday morning at 8:30am, apologized for not coming back Saturday, stated he felt sick from the fumes. Completed his work on Sunday, the tub looks beautiful and asked for payment of the $400.00 and said he would be back Tuesday to do the tiling and caulking. I received a call on Tuesday from Matt, he said he went to several tile stores and Home Depot and could not find a tile to match my white tile. Matt said he wasn't sure what to do, stated he wasn't comfortable caulking such a big gap, stated it would take hours to dry. At that point I said I would call my brother in law and ask what I should do. So at this point, I am thinking I just paid $400.00 to have my tub resurfaced, I can't use it because the guy who said he would comeback and tile and caulk is on the phone telling me he can't find white tile. The bathroom still has paper taped to the floor and the wall around the tub. Good news, my brother in law completed the job. So, not sure if we were just unlucky and caught Matt on a bad week, but honestly I could not recommend him for a job. No matter how beautiful a tub looks, it doesn't do much good if the job isn't complete. I am disappointed that someone would work that hard to refinish a tub and walk away leaving the customer to finish the job.

Dear Member, everything you said is true. I did have to take my dog to the vet. After a recent surgery he tore open the stitches. The caulk line was very large and I was uncomfortable with using caulk and suggested a bullnose tile instead. I did look for tile that would complete your project and discussed with you that I could not find a tile that looked good. The bathtub had been refinished at least twice, which is why we spent a combined total of 7 man hours stripping the old paint off. Then I did the repairs and took Joe home. Both Joe and I were feeling very sick and I did come back Sunday morning on time to finish the refinishing portion. I believe it was the right call and would do the same again. I apologize for any inconvienence, I always do the best I can. I understand to some extent of the way you feel. I did not abandon your project, you said your family member would take care of the caulk problem. Unfortunately unless you are in the Refinishing Industry it is hard to understand how paint stripper can affect a workers ability to perform and I myself was very tired from being up all night with my dog. Best of wishes and I am sorry to have dissapointed you and your family. Matt Brown

Thank you for taking the time to give me a review. I think it is very cool that you waited almost a year and gave a review on how well the work has held up. That is what members need to know, I do the best with everything I touch. It is just not possible to explain in words how well Angie's List customers and there reviews have launched Great Lakes Refinishing into such a success. I talk with my competitors and they talk about being slow. Since Angie's List first started rating me my business just keeps getting better. With all of my great reviews and great customers I am always busy. I am booking July on June 12th. Thanx again Matt Brown.

Matt and his guys did a great job - took him a better part of a day to do our upstairs tub as it had been refinished many years ago and he had to re-sand all the way down to the base. Great experience overall. Originally hired this firm just to refinish a bathtub although I had many other repairs to do. While assessing the bathtub job, Matt offered, for a very fair price, to replace the tub faucets and new vanity that I had purchased . He also found where water had gotten into the wall behind the tub faucet and made the wall soggy. He was able to remove the tile, repair the wall, and replace the tile, without additional charge. After beautifully finishing the bathroom, I asked Matt to quote on removing a kitchen cabinet and repairing and painting the drywall around it. He did a fabulous job, again for a great price. Then I asked him to paint the garage door and porch ceiling. All the work has been done well. I use this firm repeatedly because of the work quality and price.

Thank you, it is good to change things up for me. Refinishing tubs & tile is the heart of GL and I only offer the other services you mentioned to refinishing customers. I used to be a commercial painter and drywall installer along with framing. So while I have the knowledge and skills I have chosen refinishing as my main business. Both you and your husband are very nice people, and again Angie's List customers in my opinion are the best. Every good review makes my job easier and gives all the members there best chance at hiring a professional refinisher. It takes years to learn all the tricks of the trade, I redo many tubs done by other companies who just do not have the experience or the proper materials and skills. This is going on my 16th year in the business. Thank's again Matt.

Matt was very nice and respectful of our bathroom. Paper and taped off everything that should not be painted, cleaned up afterwards and and overall great job. He was late in the morning, but called and said he would be running a couple hours late, that was the only negative, but we were home, so that was fine. We hired another company, but he was helping them out and did the work for the day, so I wanted to review him. The work was solid and it has 3 months and it still looks great. He went out of his way to explain how to clean it, talked about products he uses himself and it was overall a great experience. I would use him again!

Matt called us with in a few ours of leaving a message. He was very nice and upbeat. He gave us the best quote out of all of the places we contacted. We set up a time for him to come out to do the work the next day. Matt came with a co-worker. They where is a wonderful mood. It made a good impression. They where on time and very pleasant. They checked out what was to be done and got to work fast. They set up the bathroom with plastic and paper to protect the walls and floors. They preped the tub, refinished and put the texture on the bottom. It took a few hours for the entire process as he had told us. He also let us know that the smell and fumes from the process are rather heavy. Since a family member has breathing problems Matt made sure that he was not around the work area. He kept the bathroom well vented with a large fan in the window. When they where finished the clean up was fast and done properly. A few hours later I went in to check on the how it was drying. I went to pick something up off of the floor. When I was getting up I placed my hand on the edge of the tub. I put a palm print on the new finish. I was so worried. I called Matt and he to told me he would be out and fix it No Charge! I was very happy about that. When he came back to repair what I did it only took a few minutes for the repair. I would recomend Matt - Great Lakes Refinishing to anyone. Thank you Matt for the GREAT job!!!

Matt came over and started on the job. While stripping the old paint off of the tub (it had been refinished before) he discovered the drain was corroded and needed to be replaced prior to refinishing. Matt stopped his work and I had to summon a plumber to replace the drain. It was a major pain and it took some time as the drain had been in there for over 20 years. Matt came back one week later and finished the job. I was not charged extra for the second trip and the bathtub came out beautiful. Matt kept us informed during the entire job and explained the process. We were very happy with the results and highly recommend Great Lakes Refinishing.

Thankyou for the great review. We did lose a days worth of work but the drain had to be fixed. My job is to protect my customers from problems, in your case the drain which was ready to fall apart. I always do the best I can and will continue that. Matt

Matt did a very thorough job. He came twice to complete the work. The chemicals have very strong smell, which lasts for a few days. It is not recommended that we use mats with suction cups on a re-finished tub. I did not know this prior to re-finishing. It was a bit expensive, however, cheaper than buying and installing a brand new tub. Matt was very punctual and professional, and very thorough. He did a very nice job, and hope that the finish doesn't peel for the next 10 years!
Description of Work: Matt re-finished our cast iron bathtub, which had enamel worn off near the drain. The tub is about 100 years old.

Member I do not want anyone to ever think they paid more than they should have. As with most old white tubs yours had hundreds of chips and was worn quite a bit on the inside. I did what is called a full rebuild, which means the entire inside of the tub was coated with a fiberglass filler in the very deep areas and a finishing compound over everything else. That is why it took 2 different days, I needed to let the filler dry at least 3 to 4 hours before sanding. If you find that the bathtub is to slick you can use a non-suction cup bathmat or I can install one of our non-skid surfaces for little more than gas money and the materials. I want you to be completely happy and will do whatever that takes. As far as the tub peeling you have a written 10 year guarantee that will not happen, if they are done well the tubs do not peel and that is also a promise from me. Please never hesitate to call me with any questions or concerns. Matt Brown

He was very professional in looking over the work before giving the estimate; completing what he said, and venting during the application of the finish, and cleaning up each day. He connected each day regarding his time of arrival and his plan for the current day and the next. He sometimes stayed late. Two suggestions:1) His work schedule varies--beyond 5 pm some days, If you must have him away at a certain hour, be definite about that. 2) After he sprays the finish, arrange to have venting outdoors continue for the evening. Matt's goal was to create a beautiful finish that will continue for many years. He does all the professional work himself. Ask him about his long-term guarentee and conditions. That in itself shows he wants a product that stays beautiful for a long time. Matt was both personable and professional. I am very pleased with his work. Thank you, Angie's List.
Description of Work: Matt did a supurb job, surpassing the 'normal' for refinishing of tub, shower, and 2 sinks. On these 1930's old-style bathroom furnishings he went far beyond expectations to beautifully finish the 4 items. All cracks, chips, and even a plugged up overflow was completely erased by his expert work. He spent many extra hours to complete this by spraying extra coats of the finish and even taking the sink out to completely clean out the inside. Hours and hours of work. It looks so beautiful.

I would first like to say it was a pleasure to work for you. You are a very nice person, fresh coffee and anything else to make us comfortable. The work at your home was alot and unfortunately the odors from all of the cleaning to repairing and finally the refinishing was alot. We did vent everything we could, but you are right with that many items the smell does linger for a few days. I was very pleased with the parking, many times in that part of town parking is tough with a full size pickup. It makes me feel great to hear from my customers and there complete satisfaction, thank you for the review. Matt

The quality of Matt's work was excellent. He restored a bath tub in a tenant's apartment for me. He handled all matter with attentiveness and care above and beyond all expectations. My tenants were thrilled. Matt made himself available 24/7/365 to communicate about the job or accommodate doing the work. He's a really decent guy and thoughtful guy. Thank you.

Matt was professional and informative. He did a terrific job. After just four hours, my 30 year old harvest gold bathtub is now bright white and looks brand new!

Thankyou for the compliments. The color changes are a refinishers pleasure to do. Working for you was nice and a needed brake from the project I am still working on. Your tub will last a long time, remember the clorox cleanup. Matt

It had been refinished about a year ago by another company but they didn't do a great job. We hired Matt to redo that job and it turned out very nice. It was much smoother and shinier. He was on time and if he was going to be late he would call. His helper also did a good job. They masked the whole bathroom before starting and hung plastic on the walls and paper on the floor.

He was good about coming back. There was a part we were not pleased with and he touched it up. He did a good job at making sure that we were happy and that all the work was completed. They were great on the follow up as well. They took care of everything to our satisfaction.

Matt has gone above and beyond to restore our antique claw foot tub to like new condition. In the beginning, he properly prepared and secured the area with plastic, to ensure easy cleanup and no overspraying. The restoration process was a multi-step process, in which he keep us informed in detail as to the status of the finishing. Overall, he did an outstanding job! Thanks so much, Matt!

Thank you for your patience with the tub. It was a tough one with the broken area by the faucet and overflow area. It was down to the cast iron, but we got it done. I appreciate the business. Matt
