Description of Work: I purchased a Big Deal from this company for $49 Property Assessment & Home Maintenance Package! They came out and they did their assessment. The guy who came out was really nice. The guy gave us the assessment later on, but the prices were high.

Jamie, who was in charge of the estimate, showed up on time and gave me a thorough, itemized estimate. The price was in line with other contractors that gave me estimates for the same job. Jamie was also the only contractor that followed up with me more than once via phone and the only one that made a computer rendering of the finished kitchen for me to see. I did not end up getting the work done at the time because a couple of other projects took priority, but I will be getting it done soon, and Catalyst is on the short list of contractors that I am strongly considering for the job.
Description of Work: Catalyst sent someone to do an estimate on some heavy remodeling that I was doing in an apartment.

Both bathrooms had to be done by a drop dead date (a little less than two months from the initial interview). When we walked into the house on the drop-dead date Ken and Chris welcomed my family with a beautiful deluxe spa bathroom and a lovely powder room. It was simply wonderful and I was so pleased. Their professionalism and quality workmanship inspired me to completely gut and remodel the basement in 2010. That is for another Angie's List Report. Stay tuned.
Description of Work: My dealings with Catalyst Construction & Remodeling, LLC began in June, 2009 when I decided to remodel my 1.5 bathrooms in my 50 year old townhouse. After two interviews I hired Eric and crew to do the job. The bathroom and powder room remodeling included the complete gutting of the one bathroom (walls, ceiling, floor, old pipes and drain were removed) and a simpler powder room remodel. The upstairs bathroom was the more complex job. It's was a typical small pink townhouse bathroom that had to be converted into a small luxurious bathroom of my dreams with high-end, high-tech products such as Kohler’s digital thermostatic valve (DTV II, a digital navigation system that integrates water, light, steam and audio), multiple shower heads including the water tile ambient shower head with chromatherapy, steam generator (how did we live without that???), speaker system, high-end uplift mirror and more. The DTV II plumbing and/lighting/steam generation/audio connected to your PC/IPod/MC3 player installation is somewhat complex and the Catalyst tradesmen are reputed to be Kohler experts. They lived up to their reputation. Everything looks beautiful but more importantly everything works beautifully. I also had the original bathroom door removed and replaced with a pocket door which meant the hall wall had to be removed, replaced and painted. They installed marble walls and floors as well as subway tiled walls in both bathrooms. They also installed a new exhaust fan and canned ceiling lights. The quality of workmanship is fabulous.

In all honesty my family and I can say that Catalyst made the remodeling a very positive experience. Our quality of life has improved significantly. We now enjoy two separate hydro-therapy experiences, an In-law suite, a home theater and a very nice laundry/storage room. To Eric, Ken, Chris1, Chris2, Jeremy, Jay, Shawn, and all others who participated in the remodeling jobs, here is a big Thank You from us. If only I had a larger home to remodel……..
Description of Work: Catalyst Construction & Remodeling LLC/Eric and his crew had done such a wonderful job remodeling my bathrooms in Summer 2009, that I was inspired to remodel the basement. Once again Eric and his very talented staff came through from the very beginning with sound advice, quality workmanship and professionalism. They moved old oak furniture up two floors, tore out an old wall and ceiling and replaced the dark dingy basement with a lovely multifunctional living area and very nice laundry/storage room that met all of my specifications. Ken built us a completely new spa bathroom (yes, he and Jay did all that nasty complex plumbing which meant digging up the concrete floor to install a sewer injector system). He installed a bubble message tub with chromotherapy which is controlled with a Kohler’s digital thermostatic valve (DTV II, a digital navigation system that integrates water, light and audio) and a laminar ceiling faucet. Ken connected the basement DTVII and the upstairs DTVII audios to the same home server. Ken had no problems with my ideas and the new products I threw his way which included ModularArt walls and 3Form solutions in particular sliding doors, window coverings and a light box wall partition. He also worked out the all important lighting scheme with me. The lighting is lovely and warm and not basement like. Ken worked closely with other tradesmen from other companies to efficiently install the home theater, wall units and storage facilities. This meant that he foresaw issues and solved them before they became problems The family cannot be happier with the results. I made three late changes during the remodel: (1) added a soffit and LED lighting strip to better accentuate one of the ModularArt wall, (2) tiled one storage room wall with subway tile and (3) added soundproofing to the home theater speakers (which I didn’t think of until almost too late). Ken was flexible enough to accommodate my shortsightedness. Also, after the gutting of the basement, cracks in the foundation had to be addressed and were addressed before the dry wall was installed and just before the huge July 2010 downpour of 8+ inches. Not one drop rainwater entered the basement. There was one hiccup, the wrong size bathtub was delivered. That was a problem that affected the schedule that Eric and crew worked around with no fuss.

We recently purchased a home built in 1885 with various 'improvements' implemented on it over it's years. All the improvements needed revision. We started to tear things out in hopes of replacing them ourselves but soon realized we were in way over our heads. Any improvements we might have made would be erased by a poor structure that didn't allow us to add value. We needed a Contractor. Catalyst came in for the estimate shortly after I contacted them. Eric made an excellent sales pitch showing his team's qualifications, experience, certifications and insurance. Had several other GC's in the house for estimates but none came in that left me feeling at all confident they were up for the job. I've been in homes with contractors run wild in the past so my nose is tuned to sort out promises that can't be kept. Glad that my sense of smell is still working fine as Catalyst did great work. Work started soon after I signed the contract. Partial payment was made on the first day of work and they didn't leave the job until the contract was complete. A timeline was provided upfront in regard to what we still needed to pick-out and finalize in order to keep them busy - we kept up with those timelines and they kept busy. Bob was my Superintendant on the job. Over 20 years in the field that he expertly brought to working on our house. His practical experience was invaluable in helping us make difficult and sometimes mundane decisions. It's nice when you don't have to tell a contractor where electrical fixtures go. Typical interaction... Bob: "Do you have a preference where I put the switches for the lights?" Me: "Put em where you think they should go." Result: Things are perfect where he put them - where they belong. Did I mention we were living in the house throughout the entire project? We'd move ourselves to whatever part of the house wasn't being worked on at the time, Bob kept this to a minimum. Bob did most of the work on his own but he would occasionally have an assistant stop by to install heavier things (think 20 foot beams). Everyone that came to my home from Catalyst was polite, pleasant and professional.
Description of Work: Kitchen ----------- Removed floor - installed with superior supports. Included removing old post support and replacing with steel. Removed ceiling - installed with new lumber. Reframed walls - old structure was inadequate, new structure excellent. Installed new plumbing. Installed new electrical. Installed and painted drywall. Installed replacement window. Installed hardwood floors. Installed cabinets with under-cabinet lighting. Installed marble backsplash. Installed new appliances and fixtures. Bathroom -------------- Gutted. Installed new plumbing. Installed new electrical. Installed replacement glassblock window Installed and painted drywall. Installed fixtures (sink, vanity, toilet, towelbars, custom shower with poured floor) Installed ceramic and glass tile throughout (entire shower tiled in subway glass) Back of house ---------------- Removed poorly designed stairway and created new stairs with more optimal layout. Re-supported rear of home with engineered lumber. Removed old window and installed sliding glass door (required new framing) Installed replacement window. Framed window that was removed. Moved electric junction box to basement. Upstairs --------------- Demo'd existing. Framed new walls. Brought existing electrical up to code and installed new. Moved existing bathroom fixture rough-ins completely. Installed steam shower. Framed new bathtub enclosure. Installed 5 new windows. Drywalled all of the upstairs.

Went great - we gave them our keys and they did the work on time and on budget even after we threw a few curve balls on the scope.
Description of Work: Another great experience with this company! They came in and fixed some water intrusion issues we had, installed some crown molding, fixed our fireplace and also gave us some insight into how to fix a few other issues with our home. Eric showed up on time and I showed him our front and back doors and requested rates on work and materials for new steel doors and frames. I am also planning on remodeling my bathroom in the future and asked him to take a look at that as well. Appt went well and Eric mentioned he had traveling coming up so it may be a few weeks before he could get back to me on quote or examples of doors. He finished our appt by giving me a presentation of how qualified their company was, excellent customer satisfaction, also I believe high ratings from BBB. That's the last I heard from Catalyst. I gave him the few weeks then left a voicemail last week requesting a call back but have heard nothing. Disappointed with this company. If the job was too small, then don't mislead your possible future customer and walking advertisement. Future bathroom remodel didn't seem to make a difference either. With all their qualifications and outstanding this and that....I found them unprofessional and a let down.
Description of Work: I called Catalyst over a month ago to set up an estimate for replacing my wooden front and back doors/frames with steel doors/frames.

I wanted to have a simple bathroom remodel: replace vanity, sink, light. Paint, refinish tub and clean the tile. I've purchased all of the materials needed, including the paint!! My bathroom is 6' x 8'. There is no way in HADES the company (Eric) can justify how much he wanted to charge $7,842.50 and noted that he'd forgotten to add the cost of the hepa vacuum he was going to use for his workers. I got other estimates that were under $1,500. I wanted to call his company just because I was shopping around for bids. When he gave me his bid, I showed him one that I got for $1,300. He couldn't understand how that company could go so low. He asked if their plumbers and electricians were licensed (yes...) and claimed that's why his bid is more, because he's using licensed electricians and plumbers. How disingenuous can you be? If he thought the job was too small, he could have said so. I've had other companies come out and bid for other work that said the job was something their company can't do. He was professional and qualified, but charging me at least $6000 over what would be reasonable is an OUTRAGE!!!!

Member, As I had explained when I was at your residence on the thirteenth, we use licensed electricians and plumbers to do our work. In addition to this I had also quoted several other line items in our proposal that were not included in the other contractors proposal. So this comparison is no where close to apples to apples. It wasn't even clear if this contractor has the same level of liability insurance and workmans comp that we carry. I am sorry that you were "shocked" by the price, and I would love to show you what we can do. I hope that you have a good experience with the other contractor.

From the start the Catalyst team was responsive and realistic in what the job would be, what would be worthwhile to include in scope, and were frank in setting expectations that at least for the veneer replacement, it wouldn't match the rest of the door. We appreciated the professionalism with which they took on this project (knowing this was small scale), the attention and the absolute quality, not to mention we LOVE that they use their own carpenters, plumbers, etc. and don't subcontract the work! At the time we weren't ready for a major renovation, but are now and the first call is to Catalyst!
Description of Work: Removed and replaced warped veneer on a solid core front door, sanded and stained. Also, rebuilt busted door frame/jamb and replaced/worked on door frame to ensure door would close; replaced glass.

Project went very well. It got a little behind schedule but that was due to us changing some of the design plans which required more carpentry and plumbing work. Any issues we had were quickly resolved. We are having them come out again next week to work on some new projects for us.
Description of Work: We had them remodel our master bathroom. This included: 1) New tile in the bath/show enclosure - they suggested subway tile which looks great 2) Install two new medicine cabinets and remove and dry wall over the old one 3) Install new lighting, electrical 4) Install new sinks, faucets and shower/bath fixtures We had two different parties install the new counter (Catalyst found them) and new custom shower door (we found them)

Catalyst arrived on the set date and preformed the demolition for the first week. Each night the demo was cleaned up and trash taken away. All this was done with a minimum noise and inconvenience for our connected townhouse neighbors. The work men arrived every day at the appointed time and during the constriction period cleaned up and removed all debris. The job required matching old hardwood floors with new areas of wood. The matching and staining of new wood and sanding and finishing of old wood were excellent. Catalyst followed a calendar that was updated each each week until the completion of each job.

Excellent! Careful discussion of the project before the estimate. After acceptance of the job, we met to discuss what would be needed to buy and timing. Another contractor had told me the the old fiberglass stall area was a nonstandard size and that the shower pan would have to be a custom-job. Not so, an unusual size but available. All my concerns were addressed. Work started promptly and was finished ahead of schedule. All debris was removed carefully and carpets protected. Though it wasn't specified in the contract they also installed a shower curtain rod and the vanity sink without additional charge.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel - replace toilet, replace vanity, replace makeup counter, replace fiberglass shower with marble tile shower, replace ceramic floor tile with marble tile. Necessary plumbing done. Also replacement of ceramic tile with stone in a small entry area.

The job started earlier than originally planned. The carpenter was prompt each day. The quality of the work was ok and they made adjustments that we asked for when the job was completed. I did feel that they made the job seem more complicated and intricate when bidding then it turned out to be. The total time spent was about 10 hours over a day and a half.
Description of Work: Our outside storm door wouldn't close properly. The door needed to be readjusted on the hinges and shaved to close within the door frame. The front door needed to be weather proofed which involved cutting and staining wood to go between the doors and applying weather stripping. The glass on the front door was re-secured and the strike plate was adjusted to ensure proper closure. We also had two inside doors that were not closing properly. These doors were adjusted on their hinges and/or shaved to ensure proper fit and closure of each door.

After searching Angie's list, contacted Eric who sent Wally over for an initial examination of the situation. Wally arrived on time and carefully researched the problem and provided some suggestions as to the next step. However, the source of the leak was still not clear. One suggestion was to remove the drywall in the closet by the shower. This would have entailed some initial cost, however, we decided to do this ourselves. Wally suggested we call him after we removed the drywall and then we can figure out the source of the leak. After removal of the drywall, it was clear that the shower lining was not placed properly and thus the resulting leak which was occurring over several years causing the wood to rot and the subsequent issues. Wally came back and gave an estimate to remove the tiles, rebuild the shower, put in new tiles (which was to be provided by us), etc. and we gave a deposit. The scheduler called a few days later and notified us that it would be several weeks before they could start. As we were expecting quests and needed the work done right away, I found another company that could start immediately. Thus, I called Eric and inquired about cancelling the contract. Eric was very professional and gracious and cancelled the contract without any issues. In addition, he mailed our deposit right away. Outstanding service and as stated earlier, very professional. I would definitely recommend Eric and if any additional work is needed I would not hesitate to utilize their services.
Description of Work: Leak from shower into master closet. We moved into our condo less than a year ago. The orginal work in our condo was not done properly, in particular the shower lining was not placed properly, causing a leak into the adjacent master walk in closet. This resulted in mold growth and seveal studs becoming rotten.

Catalyst is a very professional company. I called and set up a walk through/estimate for the work that was needed to be done. Catalyst sent their representative, Wally, over within a couple of days of the phone call. Wally took the time to walk me through the options we had and what the most practical steps would be for our particular needs. I was given a verbal range on the estimated cost for the work on the spot and was provided a written estimate once I committed to Catalyst for the work. On the date of work, Wally came out and walked through the work to be done with the carpenter assigned to our job. They did a great job and the doors looked as good as new. Catalyst was even flexible to change the work schedule and scope of the work when, during the demolition part of the job, additional water leaks were discovered.
Description of Work: Catalyst removed, replaced, painted and caulked damaged door jambs in our guest room and living room which had been damaged by water leaks. They also installed wooden shoes at the base of the doors in the master bedroom and guest room.

I have to say that this was one of my favorite projects that we have dome over the years. It isn't everyday that we get to custom build Burl Walnut built in cabinets from start to finish. I really think that the cabinets matched the antique furniture to a tee. They really turned out to be a artful expression of craftsmanship. Thank you, Eric Udelhoven CR

They were very quick to set up an appointment with their estimator, who was very polite and professional. The owner Eric took the time to sit down with me to help with a lot of the decisions I needed to make and even went to various stores with me to pick out materials. The crew was very thorough and professional, and cleaned up their work areas at the end of every day. Everything came out exactly how I wanted and the entire experience far exceeded my expectations.
Description of Work: Kitchen - complete remodel, cabinets/flooring/drywall/appliances/plumbing/lighting. Bathroom - total gut rehab: i.e. new shower and vanity, removing and replacing tiles, reworking the plumbing to install a new Kohler DTV system.

After water damage to our basement room, we decided to redo the entire room. Catalyst Construction was recommended to us by our waterproofing company. Eric was timely in giving us a written estimate on the job. They gutted the entire room, including some built-ins. They rebuilt the room to our specifications in a professional and efficient manner. We are very pleased with the result and intend to use them on further jobs.
Description of Work: Dry wall, flooring, shelving, window installation, painting, installation of light fixtures, doors, general carpentry. Also, installation of heavy glass shower doors in an upstairs bathroom.

Eric was very professional, prompt and courteous throughout the whole process. He provided an estimate quickly, their estimate was very competitive with the other estimates we received, and their estimate included painting the frame and lattice once installed (other carpenters were unwilling to also paint the framing and lattice). We selected Catalyst because of their reputation and our personal interaction with Eric, knowing that we would end up having a good experience. A couple of days later, as scheduled, Eric came out to perform a pre-construction walk through with Chris, his tradesmen who was going to perform the work, and they discussed the work to be done while on site and came up with some good suggestions for our access panel, etc. Chris came back to do the work and worked through some pretty brutally hot conditions and then a rainy day, all the while without anything, but a thoroughly professional and positive demeanor. Chris also anticipated and addressed some issues that came up during the course of the work with effective solutions and attention to the overall aesthetic we were seeking to achieve from the work. Chris was also very good about leaving the job site clean each day when he left, putting away all materials and equipment until he returned to continue the work. Additionally, we had other contractors on site performing other work in our rather small front yard area, and Chris coordinated his work with theirs in such a way that it seemed that there was no interference whatsoever with the progress of either contractor's work. The work was completed as scheduled, and we were very pleased with the results. We already have scheduled an estimate for additional work with Catalyst, and if they continue to come in with competitive quotes, we are definitely going to continue using them for our various home improvement and remodeling needs.
Description of Work: Constructed framing and installed and painted lattice around front, exterior overhang of our home.

I was so pleased with the overall quality of work and the customer service that Eric's company provided me. I am a first time home buyer and was able to trust Eric with the services he completed for me. He was professional, experienced, and customer focused. I was amazed at his responsiveness, attention to detail, and his ability to follow through with everything we discussed. Additionally, Eric and his crew were able to offer solutions that I hadn't thought of and I became reliant on their knowledge and expertise.
Description of Work: Eric's company completely gutted and remodeled my bathroom, installed new tile flooring throughout my kitchen, bathroom, and foyer, built out an existing wall dividing my bedroom and living room and took out two pocket doors and added a new door to my bedroom, removed a large mirror hanging above my fireplace, added crown molding throughout, wood baseboards, added and installed track pendant lighting, new lighting in living room and bedroom, framed out my closet doors and in addition they installed the custom cabinets I ordered. Lastly, Eric's company was able to finish the entire project for me by painting it for me as well. They took care of all my needs from start to finish!
