Sloppy work. Unreachable. Not responsive now that the work is complete. Could not give explanation of what was done and why.

Description of Work: Bryan did a complete kitchen remodel. He gutted it down to the studs, replaced undersized joists, rewired and added all new plumbing. He installed new cabinets, replaced two windows, three doors, and added new trim all around. The new kitchen and adjoin dining area are great. Bryan does the job right, he communicated with us so we knew what was happening and works with some great cabinet, flooring, and countertop providers. We are very happy with the result and will use Mathis construction again.

Description of Work: Showed up, scoped out the project, said he could handle everything that needed to be done. Took measurements, said he would get back to me with cost of materials and labor, and vanished, never to be seen or heard from again. A total waste of time!

They were timely, clean, and respectful of our family's space during construction. We, at times, were a bit too hands-on, but he was patient with our OCD level of interest in the project. Overall, there was just one complaint, and he worked to resolve the issue as best he could. My parents have worked with him on a number of projects, and we would highly recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Bryan did a gut rehab of our bungalow kitchen and back porch 5 years ago - he and his team did a really great job on a difficult and complicated project. The craftsmanship was very high quality - we've since worked with a couple of his guys on small projects - and we still get compliments on their work. He was very creative in making sure the changes (opened up a wall, moved a kitchen window, all of the finish woodwork, etc) stayed true to the style of our bungalow and, in the end, looked seamless with the rest of our house, inside and out.

We were appalled to read the review that was submitted from another member. This is not the Brian Mathis that we know and have trusted with our home. I never thought anybody could say something negative about Brian Mathis and his company. The first job we hired Mathis Construction for was 8 years ago when we first moved into our home. Our house is 35 years old and was in much need of updating. Brian knocked down a couple of walls to open up our kitchen and replaced the countertops. He also rebuilt some upper cabinets that were removed to fit under our breakfast bar. This was a band aid until we could afford to remodel the entire kitchen. Brian had given us an estimate prior to starting the job and when he gave us the bill at the end we were amazed to find that we owed him less than what the estimate was. Brian has done several small jobs at our home with the most recent being 11/22/09 (Sunday). We had a pipe leaking in our basement. Even though it was Sunday Brian came to our house and took care of the problem. He knew it couldn't wait and he didn't let us down! It came time to finally totally remodel our kitchen in August, 2009. We couldn't imagine calling anybody to do this other than Mathis Construction. We have heard many horror stories of kitchen remodels. Our story is a very pleasant one. Brian and his staff showed up promptly when they said they would. They cleaned up any mess that was accumulated during each day. They would haul away the garbage and sweep and vacuum everything before they went home each day. One day Brian and his crew weren't here but there was one of his subcontractors. Brian stopped at our house at the end of the day to make sure the subcontractors didn't leave a mess. We can't say how much the little things like that mean when you are going thru a kitchen remodel and trying to adjust without having the appliances that we take for granted daily. It is the finishes that make a room stand out. We had some difficult crown molding that had to be transitioned together. Brian took great care in making all of this look seamless. We get so many compliments on something that most contractors would not even consider spending much time on. Our entire kitchen remodel from demolition to total completion was 7 weeks. This is amazing! We absolutely love our kitchen!!! The quality of work that Brian and his staff provide can NOT be beat! When getting this level of quality you would expect to pay far greater than the average contractor yet Brian's costs continue to be competitive and reasonable and often come in below budget.
Description of Work: Mathis Construction has completed many tasks over the last 8 years but the most significant is a complete kitchen remodel that was completed in October of 2009.

I told Mathis the woodwork was uneven in March, 2007, and he said the floor was uneven. Not true, but obviously he knew there was a problem. He did put blocks of wood by the beam to try to fix it, but they did very little. What a nightmare! Problems are still going on. The kitchen soffit joints are splitting for the 3rd or 4th time (I've lost count), and my old bedroom is 66 degrees with the house on 70, the other two won't go above 64, and when the doors are closed, one heats to 59. I have a trapezoid soffit, a slanted soffit across the south wall, and a soffit with a bulging end. Numerous ladybugs (dozens more than with my 36-yr.-old windows) are constantly flying around in the kitchen and basement. The bugs upstairs are now seldom there since Ed Kreis, my painter, caulked all the windows on the inside, because Mathis did not caulk any windows until I complained after the house was sided. He said it was the job of the man putting on the siding. And then not all windows were caulked, but it was too late to do a good job, especially since most of the replacement windows were not flush with the interior walls. There were big gaps. | **In regards to Mathis? comments: I am not a ?frequent flyer.? I have made four reports to the Better Business Bureau in the past 68 years, and they were all made since the Mathis Construction remodeling. One report did not deal with Mathis. The pictures speak for themselves and so do the 150+ people I've had go through this house. They are totally shocked! I now have had 220 popped drywall screws, 20 remain to be fixed. As you know the kitchen floor is an uneven mess because Mathis did such a poor job of trying to shore up the joist. I have photos showing how uneven the new 2nd floor bedroom and kitchen floor are. Four carpenters don't want the job fixing it, because they said it would all have to be ripped up. I am now awaiting a report from the Attorney General.
Description of Work: On September, 19, 2006, the incompetent, careless Bryan Mathis began a nightmarish remodeling project for me that I had drawn up by an incompetent architect. It ended the last week of February, 2007. Repairs went on until December, 2008. He added a basement room, because our basement wall was bowing in. He also added a room above it, which was supposed to extend the kitchen, and a large bedroom, bath and walk-in closet over our family room and garage. Altogether we added about 1000 square feet. New replacement windows and doors were installed, the downstairs bathroom was remodeled as was the kitchen extended into the old dining room. New cabinets, lights, appliances and countertops were also installed. A new vanity, mirror, and light fixture were installed in the bathroom upstairs. A patio was poured outside, a garage door was purchased, and a second furnace and air conditioner were installed for the second floor. The countertops were pegboard/plywood for 12 weeks, because Mathis ordered them at the last minute. 12/4/2006. The were installed the last week of February, 2007. Several weeks after construction started, the new basement addition, which was already under roof, flooded because no sump had been installed. 3-4 inches of water were in the new addition. Later one of Mathis' men stepped through the old family room ceiling, which was not being remodeled. Everything seemed to be going okay until he refused to take down the slanted wall and trapezoid-shaped soffit. He gave me the impression it was impossible to fix, which I recently learned can be easily fixed so it is pleasing to the eye. It is the first thing I see in the kitchen. In May,2007, a friend noticed popped drywall screws in the new bedroom ceiling. Altogether there have been 206 popped screws and nails, 175 alone in the new bedroom, closet, bath. The ceiling split from the interior wall in several places, the drywall was oversanded. All were constantly repaired, but now screws are popping again (even though Mathis told me he was removing the last 30) and drywall is splitting on the walls and ceiling. The drywall is smooth in some areas, rough in others. The new bedroom floor went concave. A year later Mathis put in a second beam to support the new bedroom. Now the floor is just wavy with a big hump down the middle. A chunk of wood was taken out of the new balcony railing and out of the new bow window frame during construction and ignored by painting over it. Repair was wood putty on the window and the railing was turned around. The patio doors leak cold air at the bottom. The furnace, installed by the incompetent Scully Heating, Mary Drive, Lockport, doesn't work properly- the ductwork is merged. The new ductwork also leaks. Scully said too bad. 3 heating companies said that it's a mess and will cost $4500 to straighten out. The floor joists buckled under the kitchen floor, and so now that sags in the middle by the island.

Response from MATHIS CONSTRUCTION INC.
Please before you "judge" our business based this 1 complaint, that Mathis Construction has had in our 10 years in business please go to the Better Business website in which we are rated an A-. The only reason we have the minus with our "A" is because the BBB has to at least ackowledge that there was some sort of complaint even if it is not legitamate. The case with the BBB was closed. The BBB "determined that Mathis Construction made a reasonable offer to resolve the issues, but the consumer did not accept the offer". The BBB also informed Mathis Construction that the member is what they call a "frequent flyer" she has numerous complaints on every person who has done work for her. She even turned in a relative. Like they say "there are some people who are just never happy". I will be more that happy to share with anyone pictures and referral names and numbers of the jobs I have done over the past 10 years I've been in business. I will also be more than happy to share the BBB complaint from the member with my rebuttal of every issue and how it was resolved. Thank you, Bryan Mathis

Bryan was fantastic to work with! He listened to all of our input and guided us in decision making when needed. He arrived on time, completed tasks in a timely manner, and maintained a clean and safe work environment. He responded to unexpected situations appropriately. He handled changes well. All of the subs were courteous, did a great job, and were very responsive. I would highly recommend him.
Description of Work: He did a full kitchen/dining room remodel. The kitchen was completely gutted to the studs, they moved the exterior wall, removed interior walls, and put in new floors, cabinets, and appliances.
