The workers were great. They showed up on time and worked hard all day including digging all the post holes by hand. Their workmanship was excellent and they cleaned up everything nicely. The only issue was with the responsiveness before the work started. I had to call myself to find out the status of the schedule. At one point they called to say the fence would be installed but the permit was not finished. Overall, I would work with them again. Their price was good and the work was excellent. Just understand they might not respond to you quickly.

I did not select them since I had an estimate that was just slightly hirer who I had already worked with on all of the fine details. Had I went to them first I would have definitely hired them. It was a tough decision.
Description of Work: I only received an estimate for WROUGHT IRON (aluminum) fence. The estimate was reasonable and they were very professional. I had a total of 3 estimates and they were the lowest.

No problems from start to finish. Everyone I talked to was cheerful and accommodating.
Description of Work: I had 8 Cedar fence posts replaced and 5 caps on old fence posts. From the time I called to the finish everything went as planned. I called for an estimate. Within a few days someone came out to my house. The next day I had the estimate. I sent in 50% of the cost and they scheduled my work. The two men who did the work were great. The fence looks great and I can now close my gate again. They gave me the Angie's list $100.00 off and I'm a happy camper.

I received quotes from four different fencing companies before deciding to hire First Fence. First Fence was the most expensive of the four companies, but they were the only one who promised to build the fence using best-practices I found from researching online and where the sales person, Kevin Murray, did not lie about those practices. For example, from my research I had determined that I wanted the fence built with stainless steel, ring-shank nails, so they wouldn’t rust/bleed over time and so they would have a stronger hold than traditional shanks. I also determined that I wanted the posts set 36” deep, and that I wanted grade 1 western red cedar used. Kevin showed me product literature from his company, where it clearly stated that they always install fences the way I wanted mine built. He also wrote all of these line items into the contract so there would be no question about it. However, the other companies tried to tell me that galvanized nails were less likely to bleed than stainless steel, or that standard shank nails will provide the same strength holding boards to rails as rink shank, or that the strength of fence posts is not related to how far they are buried, as long as you throw some concrete on top, all of which are untrue. The sales process was not without flaws, though, as I sent a written request for the estimate via email to Kevin which specifically requested a quote for board on batten. Kevin assumed that I wouldn’t want board on batten, so he instead quoted me for the much-cheaper board on board style. When I realized this and contacted Kevin, he came out the same day to fix the quote. I ended up going with a Layered Traditional style instead, which had a price in between what I was quoted and what I had requested, and I agreed to pay the additional difference. Unfortunately, the installation process went terribly. They originally built the posts over 5 inches into the neighbor's yard, despite me providing the installation crew with a survey and telling them that my neighbor was very sensitive to making sure the fence was not on their property. They then tried to argue about fixing the problem, but there was no point to continue work on the project until this was resolved. I had to take a day off work to meet with their installation manager to review the situation, and he finally agreed to dig up the posts and re-install them. In the attached pictures, notice that the property line is only 1.95 feet (~23 in) from the garage, but the post was placed 29" from the garage. Thankfully I measured the posts myself right away the first day, because the company's standard contract says that the homeowner is responsible for ensuring that the fence is on the correct property, meaning that the company would not be responsible to fix the fence later if the neighbor complained. Besides building the fence on the wrong property, the spacing between the posts was erratic. Some posts were set 5 feet apart, others 6 feet, others 7 feet, and 2 posts had a gap of over 10 feet in-between them where they had run out of material to put more posts, but likely had expected to return with more material the next day. The yard has two trees in it, and the installers just set the posts wherever they felt to avoid the trees without planning for how to keep the distances symmetrical while also avoiding the trees. Another problem was that the 9 foot posts had been buried only 12 to 24 inches deep, not the 36 inches as per the contract. One of the installers told me that he always cuts the top 12” - 18” off of the posts at the end so they look a consistent height, completely missing the fact that posts not set deep enough will blow over in a strong breeze. In the attached photos, notice the hole only being set 13 inches. The company ended up fixing some of the problems, but not all. The final fence is not straight, and the height is not consistent from one post to the next. It looks like one section of the fence is falling down, because the height shifts by several inches from one end to the other. Also, the gate locking mechanism doesn't work. Also, the fence took over a month to be built because the company would take week-long breaks between days working on the problem. Beyond all of the problems with the fence, the staff is terrible. When I talked to the salesman about the problem with my quote, I asked him to pull up his email to see the written request I had originally made for the board on batten style. He lied and said his phone was broken, so he couldn't verify this. However, he later in the same day pulled out his phone to show me pictures of other projects they had previously done. The installation manager was worse. He would take days to respond to my calls, and then tell me that he couldn't respond because his phone was also broken. However, in the meantime, my salesman had called me and told me that he was talking to the installation manager about the messages I had left about the problems with the project. When I later needed to get in touch with the installation manager, I called the office and his cell phone, but he still didn't return my calls. This time his excuse was that my phone must have been broken, because he had tried to call. Odd, because I had no problem with calling the office and getting calls about how to pay the bill. This is a terrible company. I have no idea how they have the reviews that they do on this site, other than writing their own fake reviews. Make sure you read the complaints against the company on the BBB, look at the majority 1-star reviews on Google Plus, and read the horror stories on the Checkbook magazine for Consumers before you hire them. This company is both expensive and low quality, so you can do better with just about anyone else out there.

My sales man is Eric Andersen. He is fabulous, down to earth, regular guy, very professional, great. First Fence is fabulous. First, I got a couple of estimates. I knew exactly what I wanted. Their supervisor for the team, his name is Roberto, is great guy, very good, knows his business. The team that came to do my work that was Tony and Sergio. They're wonderful. I love people who say, "How would you like this? Which one was put into? We could do it this way or this way, what do you prefer?" I love that. They did a great job for me. So, no ifs, ands, or buts. My fence was $5700 but there's a reason for that and that's my choice. I wanted aluminum and I wanted some extra bits and pieces, some little bit more designing. I didn't get just a straight cheapo whatever. And, the reason I did aluminum, of course, they do other kinds of fences. I did not want wood where I had to paint it or stain it or maintain it, because after a while you had to keep it up for all the part. I did not want wrought iron because I did not want to put it rough and I didn't want to paint it. I wanted one and done which is the aluminum and it looks like wrought iron. Everybody thinks it's wrought iron. It is not, and it's beautiful. I have people down the street that stopped to ask me about my fence. Everybody that walks by said, "Oh, my god that's a great fence!" Yes, it is. This is the kind of fence that is open, you can see through it. You can see all the flowers, the gardens. It's very open and decorative, it's functional, it's kind of a steel grey bronze color, it's lovely. I would just say that First Fence gets as many "A's" as I can possibly give them. Yes, I would hire them again in a heartbeat. I have given Eric Andersen's card to multiple people.

We like them very much. They were very prompt in responding and giving me estimates. They were very professional. They did a great job. They leveled the ground to do it. They were very thorough. The fence had to go on to someone else's property. Our yard connected to an existing fence. They knew the requirements that we needed to have this done without running to an issue. They were very professional. They were reasonably priced compared to others. They were just great to work with and very responsive. I would recommend to use them. We were very pleased with them.

Salesman Adam never showed up and did not call. Sent a text message FOUR hours later explaining that he felt unsafe in the neighborhood due to "gang activity" which there was not. Amazingly well. From the beginning, Dan provided me with quotes for all types of fences. He also discovered that my neighbor's fence was on my property & went over to let them know that one of their poles needed to be removed. He also took care of my permit. I was scheduled for Monday, but we had a lot of rain the Friday before. A few days before my scheduled installation, they called to let me know that they would be a few hours late due to jobs that couldn't get done due to the Friday morning rain. Although they came later, they still put in a full day of work. I was so impressed. The work was done well & they cleaned up after themselves. They returned the next day to finish the job & they finished early. They were very professional. My fence looks beautiful. I recommend them highly!

We contacted First Fence along with other companies to quote metal fencing in our back yard. Adam was our sales rep and they also quoted a lifetime warranty on heaving. So we decided to go with First Fence. As other customers have said, the first fence that arrived was the wrong color. The 2nd fence was the right color but one of the cross beams was not in the right location. Being all of the sections were built the cross beam could not be moved. We either had to wait and order another fence again (#3) or accept this fence. We accepted the 2nd fence. Got it installed and noticed one of the 3 gates were not correct. Had to order another! Do we see a pattern? Anyways, after all was installed, it looked great. Many compliments. We were happy. First winter comes and one of the 3 gates pops open and will not close, we wire it shut. They came out and adjusted the latch to accommodate the heaving. 2 of the gates had the fancy latches on them (which I was talked into for extra $$$$$) silly me! Yes it is one of the fancy latches that fails. Multiple calls to get it repaired, spring comes and they replace the 2 gate posts with longer ones. YAY! Cons..... 1) you never know when they are coming. 2) When Roberto says he will call you, he won't! Plain and simple. 3) scratched the crap out of one of the old posts when they were putting everything back together. But hey, I was done with them and it was fixed. NOT Guess what happened the next winter, yep same thing, after spending 6 grand on a fence we have to wire a gate closed so our dog can't get out. Or we can go out with a screw driver and move the latch. I could have gotten a chain link fence for half the price and not had to go through this. I called asap so someone could come out and look at the gate WHILE it is heaving so they could determine exactly what needs to be done. Waiting 3 months for the thaw, they came to fix it, and the service guy asked "me" which posts they were doing! He had the exact same posts and I was supposed to tell him what to fix. I'm not sure what bringing duplicate metal posts was going to do? No supervisor came and I don't speak much Spanish. They left! In April I got testy and complained about the customer service because Roberto never called or followed up on his promises to get this resolved. I was assured by the sales rep that I was wrong and they will determine what needs to be done and take care of it. It has now been 6 months, they are still determining what should be done. Might have to wait till winter again for it to heave so MAYBE they can send someone out to look at it. Customer service after the install is non existent. You feel like the skit "who's on first" around and around and around. Now I'm told it will be turned over to the owner for POSSIBLE repair. I will not hold my breath. If the owner hires a bunch of employees that don't give a .......... Why hire them? It is his business and if he's happy with who he has representing his business, WOW. I can't help you folks find a good fence company. This place was ok until there was a problem. Soooooo, if you don't have a problem all should be fine. Do not believe the promises, once it is turned over to Roberto it is all over! You are on your own. Good luck to all.

A bit slow to get started. Took a few calls to get someone to come for a look, but understandable as weather hes been ugly. Best price of the three that gave me a quote. Work was done a few days after I was told it would be done, but close enough. Salesman told me that a permit was not needed, but village hall said that it WAS needed EVERY time. Small fib, not a deal killer. The 2 guys that came by to do the work were all business, some awful back breaking stuff needed to be done, and these guys crushed it in only a few hours. Fence looks better than it has looked in a decade.

I held off writing this review until after winter to see how the fence held up from the snow and harsh winds. First off, I will say that Eric was very easy and pleasant to work with. He came for the estimate and was in contact even after the install and came to our home to make sure the fence met our expectations afterwards. Everything went very smooth with the timing of the project as promised, to the install. The guys worked very hard in the summer heat and did an excellent job! We chose the brown fence instead of white and it is beautiful! We got many compliments on the fence from our neighbors to the mail lady. The fence handled well in the winter and with the winds, so I am confident it will serve it's purpose from years to come. The only one thing that happened was one of the posts came slightly up recently. Contacted Eric again and he was responsive and set a work order up right away and all is fixed now. Very minor issue though. I am very glad we decided to do this project as now I feel we can enjoy our outdoor space even more due to the privacy it offers to us. If you are interested at all about getting a fence for your property, I highly recommend calling First Fence, and ask to speak with Eric!

The wind made the decision for me as I realized that almost the whole privacy fence the length of the yard, had been blown down during the storm of the previous day. I contacted three fence companies and First Fence was the first to reply. A rep came to my house, at the scheduled time, to give me an estimate. Instead of replacing the whole fence, the estimate reflected using what they could of my fencing to replace mostly the posts and reattach the 6 foot privacy fencing where possible. I also asked if they could repair the weakened/weathered posts for the rest of my fence around the yard. Since my gate had always been difficult to close, that repair was also included in the estimate. The work was done in December (glad out weather was so understanding). A crew of two (sorry I have lost track of my notes since Christmas cleaning and don't have their names) came out promptly at the appointed time and worked diligently for most of the day. They strengthened the privacy fence with additional beams and reattached the "slats". They then replaced seventeen posts, removing them and replacing with new cedar posts including finishing with similar "tops" (don't know the technical term) matching the original fence. The gate was "tightened" so that each side met in the middle without having to be pushed/pulled together - this was really great and makes opening and closing the fence a pleasure. All the materials removed during this process were removed and taken off premises (as per our contract) which left my yard in good shape. They really did a great job on clean-up and I was impressed as to how sturdy my fence is now. The only indication that anything was done is that the new fence is not weathered. Great job!

I will start this off with a warning...avoid this company unless you have no other choice! The story below will be long... Dan, the sales guy, was great and he brought a book in which he had pictures of previous jobs to show what we would end up with depending on which option we chose. We ended up going with the most costly of his options because it included a metal frame and metal posts which will definitely stand up to the wind between our home and our neighbors home which is where our driveway runs. There were to be cedar fence boards on the front which is what we had with the old fence and what we wanted with new fence. Once the plan was chosen we sent in our down payment (50% of the total! Yikes!) and then had to wait a few weeks for First Fence to figure out when they could start the process. So, we have 2 dogs and need the gate to be functional so that they don't escape and can be taken out for walks. Our garage is also behind our home and the gates are needed so we can get our vehicles into and out of the garage. The wait for figuring out when they could start working was excruciating because we could not get our vehicles or our dogs through the existing gate in the state it was in... I would call and they would say that they were still figuring things out. Finally we got a date for installing the new metal posts on either side of the driveway which would replace the cedar posts that had been in place for the old gate. They came out on a Friday and got the posts installed and then took the old gate and basically stuck them to the new posts and then put a 2x4 on it so that they could not be opened at all. At least this allowed the dogs to be in the back yard unattended... They took measurements for the gate so that they could manufacture them to the exact measurements needed for the job. I was told that it would take 5-7 days to get the gates made. Now, the Thanksgiving holiday kind of interfered with things but things went severely downhill from this point on... One of the biggest problems with this company, and the one I hope they take away from this long rant, is communication. Apparently, there is only one manager of installation in the company and his name is Roberto. He is supposed to do the scheduling, oversee the custom manufacturing, and order any parts for gates and fences from what I could tell. For about 2+ weeks after the posts were installed we heard nothing as to the progress of the manufacturing of the gates and when I would call he was often not available to talk with me. Finally the call came that they would do the install of the new gates. They again did the work on a Friday while I was at work so I could not monitor the work, but boy do I wish I had been there. The plan for this work was to have 2 "drop posts" installed with one on each of the two gates so that the gate opens in the middle. When I got home that night I found a single post in the middle of the gates which was attached to the gate closest to the house and it was enormous (i.e. it was about 1.5-2 inches in diameter and as tall as the entire 4 foot gate itself!) and it was right in the center of the 2 gates. There was only a single huge drop hole in the center of the driveway to secure the gate and none on the edges of the driveway to secure the gate when it was open. Therefore...the wind would just slam the gates shut when it got strong enough so we could not drive through to the garage UNLESS someone was there to hold the gate sides open. I placed a call after hours to Roberto to ask what in the world happened and to demand that he not cash the check my wife had written for the final amount due because she had been on her way out the door when the installer told her he needed payment and she had to hustle to go pick up the kids from school?unfortunately, she was not able to survey the work. The post in the center was also kind of tricky to secure so our younger more agile dog got out twice because the post would rotate if it did not sit correctly. We were less than pleased, but at least the dog did not run away or there would have been even more trouble to be had...the dog would just go and sit at the front door to wait for us to let him in. I never got an explanation as to what happened with the order but I did get an admission from Roberto that it had been screwed up badly. He blamed his crew, which as I would later find out was a single person. He also said he would not cash the check until I told him to do so. I got them to come back out the next week to get the 2 drop posts installed and to make the front of the gate more of a continuous cedar front because with the original mistake the post allowed for a large gap through which our dogs could look and see people walk or drive past the house causing them to just bark and bark. I came home again after their shop had closed to find a serious hack-job on the fence, but at least there were now 2 drop posts...BUT...there were no post holes on the outer edge of the driveway to secure the gate when it is open. HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU NOT DO THIS?!?!? I am not a gate expert by any stretch, but I do know that in order to keep the gate open a post hole would help out a great deal. We were yet again not able to drive through the gate without ensuring that someone was there to hold the gate open. So, now we are approaching the Christmas holiday time and Roberto goes on vacation so I have to speak with his manager, David. He gets the lone installer guy in his office with him and we talk about the issues I have with the gate and the missing post holes, etc. We agree that since I have the following Friday off from work that the installer will show up by 9am. He did not show up until 11:15am! Turns out he was stopped by a police officer and his insurance had expired so he was made to wait with said officer until they cleared some things up (how do you have an employee/contractor who drives EVERYWHERE to do his work for them and he has no valid insurance?). Ugh...there went ALL of my plans for the day off I was to have? The installer showed me that there was a ?warp? in the metal frame on one of the gates because it was poorly welded. This meant that the 2 sides of the gate would never line up properly. They also did not have room on the gate because of the mess up in the installation to get the 2 drop posts to line up and in fact the one is so close to the center of the gate itself that the post gets knocked loose every time the gate is opened and then just drags on the surface of the driveway. He did fix the post holes in the center of the driveway, which had originally just been hacked holes in the driveway because they chose to leave the original hole, with its metal frame, where it originally was, and then he drilled the missing 2 post holes on the outer edge of the driveway. It took him about 3-4 hours to get the gate in a somewhat functional state. I told him it was fine as we just wanted to be able to finally use our garage again. It looks like a gate that an amateur would install?though the original that we had to replace was actually done by an amateur who was our handyman and his looked infinitely better if I do say so?and it lasted for more than 10 years without issue. I really wish I had gone with another company as this was one of the worst experiences I have had with a company who has received a decent number of positive reviews on this website. I will NEVER recommend them for anyone that is for sure. To top things off, I never got any follow up calls from First Fence to check on our level of satisfaction or anything. They also cashed the check I had asked them to hold off on cashing AND Roberto had told me they would not cash it until they got my ok to do so. Ugh?what a lousy experience this was. I give them an overall grade of D because at least the gate actually functions.
Description of Work: Due to all of the wind we have had this past summer and fall our old cedar gate which sits across our driveway was damaged. I contacted a few companies to get some estimates of work to replace the gate and to make it more sturdy so that it will not get damaged in the future. Dan, the sales guy from First Fence, came out and was very good about figuring out what we wanted and how we wanted it to look and function. He came up with 3 different options including a cheap one in which they would use the materials that were already there for a part of the work.
