The owner Jonathon is a young professional guy who is prompt, neat, and a meticulous perfectionist about his work. You can tell that he cares about his work. I would highly recommend him to anyone. He cleaned up after himself. He wore booties into our home and was very thoughtful about our house. They even vacuumed and clean afterwards. He definitely knows how to do his job!
Description of Work: Hired company to fix some drywall. They will be returning this week to follow up with the job and we are also having them do some painting for us.

deck cleaning

24% cost overrun. 400% schedule overrun. Good final product. Jonathan submitted a proposal to clean and stain my deck for $1260. The proposal stated "the deck will be thoroughly cleaned by brush and deck cleaner to restore the wood to it?s original and natural color". He showed me photos of a cedar project he had recently completed. The schedule was a day to clean the deck, a day to let it dry and a day to stain and seal it. I accepted the proposal and made a $250 deposit. Before starting the work Jonathan made repeated requests for us to leave our house unlocked when we weren't home so his workers could use the bathroom. We declined. Work started a day late due to the threat of rain. ( It didn't rain). During the first day of work, Jonathan called me at work to explain that he and a helper had spent all day and consumed all the deck cleaner but the wood was only partially cleaned. He stated at least 1 and possibly more additional cleanings would be needed at $350 each. When I argued the contract required him to complete the work for $1260, he said if I refused to pay more, he would stain and seal the partially cleaned deck. If he had done so, the deck would have looked terrible. I reluctantly agreed to pay for 1 additional cleaning if Jonathan would commit to do anything required beyond that at his expense. The alternative was for him to leave the site and not get paid. He said he's have to think about. Jonathan called back later and proposed that he sand the deck for $300 more than the original contract. He estimated it would take 2 man days. Due to a family medical issue Jonathan wasn't available so 1 worker spent 40 hours over the next 2 weeks sanding the deck. There were several days of rain and no work. No work was done on weekends. It took 2 days to stain and seal the sanded deck. The finished deck looks very nice.

Response from Touchstone Painting Co
The facts of this report that the homeowner wants to include are mostly correct, but there are some details that deserve some clarification in order to be entirely truthful. First of all, regarding access to the restrooms, this is something that the homeowner agreed to when he signed the contract, as this was laid out in the terms of the contract. Apparently he did not read the whole contract, otherwise this would not have been a surprise, and unfortunately he was apparently offended when I asked about it. I did not pressure him when informed that we would not have this agreed upon access, even though it was in the contract. Also, even when a homeowner was home, we were not allowed any access but were told we would have to drive to a nearby park if needed. Regarding the work itself, it did take longer than expected. Part of this was due to the fact that my wife and 4 pound newborn were unexpectedly admitted to a hospital 45 minutes away, the newborn having to be in the Intensive Care Unit, and I had to be there for them as well as take care of our other two small children for that week and a half. This obviously threw off the schedule and slowed the progress down on the job. The homeowner expressed very little understanding or concern regarding this. Regarding the "D" grade for responsiveness/communication, this I can not understand at all. I communicated with him regularly and in a timely manner by phone and email throughout the course of the job, and I even took several of his almost daily phone calls literally from the Intensive Care Unit in order to try to satisfy his inquiries. The other reason that the work took longer than expected was because we had to alter our plans after the initial cleaning in order to ensure that the finished product would be exactly what the homeowner wanted, which was our main concern. We do not cut corners to save time and were not about to with this particular job. The initial deck cleaning did not remove all the weathered wood matter as well as was projected. I don't want to assume that the homeowner intentionally misled me in regards to the condition of the wood, but he had told me that the deck had been built just before winter, although according to this report he says it was 1 year old already, which could explain at least in part why I had mis-judged how much work it would take to clean off the weathered matter. In any case, the initial cleaning did not work well enough to go ahead and stain, and I was not about to stain it until the wood was in pristine condition. So, I proposed that we sand the wood, which would guarantee that the finished deck would be what the homeowner wanted. I also gave him the option at this point to use another company and we would refund his down payment, but he agreed to pay an additional $300 and asked us to proceed, and I agreed to absorb any additional cost the sanding may have entailed. In the end, the homeowner got about 30 hours worth of free labor, but I wanted to make sure to take the time needed to ensure the deck would be pristine and that he would be happy with it in the end. A side note: according to the contract, I could have required that he pay for all of that labor, as there is in the contract an allowance in case the materials end up being different that can be reasonably determined beforehand, which they were. I did not even broach that subject with him, as I wanted to accept some responsibility for having mis-judged how much work it would take to clean the wood (even if I had been mis-led to the amount of time the wood had been allowed to weather). So, he got a $2700 deck job for a mere $1560, which most people would consider to be a pretty good deal. It is also worth mentioning that the procedures that the other companies that quoted the job would not have worked as well as projected either. They had recommended only pressure washing to clean the deck, which would have either not removed the weathered matter or conversely would have torn up the surface of the wood, had the pressure been high enough to actually remove the weathered matter. So, had he given the job to someone else, he would have found that the cleaning would still have taken much more work than expected, if it had worked at all, and in the worst case it would have permanently damaged the deck. All in all, I regret the unfortunate circumstances we found ourselves in during this job. However, we did all we could to try to make the homeowner happy, and it saddens me that he did not recognize this effort or our willingness to please him and take excellent care of his deck. I found him to be extremely unreasonable and very difficult to work with throughout the course of the job, despite all our extra efforts and the exceptional circumstances. However, we were determined to do the job the right way so he would be happy with his deck in the end and be able to enjoy it for years to come. I am glad that this, at least, was recognized.

Great experience overall. Jonathan is punctial and will get back to you quickly when you contact him. His price is fair for the high quality work that he does. He goes the extra mile to make sure everything is perfect. I would not hesitate to contact him in the future.

Jonathan arrived on time for both the estimate and the completion of the project. The job was done very professionally with two(2) coats applied the same day. He and his partner were extremely careful with coverage of the rugs, tile floors, mirrors, fixtures etc. The project included many tight spots and a number of difficult areas. I did not see one(1) drop of paint anywhere other than the painted surfaces. The lines along the ceiling, moldings, windows, jacuzzi and nonremovable wall mountings were perfect. Highly recommend this company!

I had called Jonathan early one week to come and paint the following week - really short notice! He squeezed me in on Monday and Tuesday the following week, showed up on time, was very courteous and worked really hard to get it done. He came back for "round two" a couple of weeks later, and that was another good experience. He had another guy helping him both times, and I just found both of them to be pleasant, good communicators, and hard workers. Jonathan also really cares a lot about his business, about doing things right, and maintaining good relationships. I can't recommend him enough!
Description of Work: Jonathan painted our large great room (vaulted ceilings, lots of wood trim), a powder room, a master bedroom and bath, and a guest room. I selected the colors and he bought them from his supplier. He put tarps down everywhere, moved furniture away from walls, taped off what needed to be taped off. He also removed light fixtures, shelves, switchplates, etc. and put everything back afterwards.

Jonathan Richards (owner) did a preliminary walk-through with me and was very detailed with his questions so that on the day the work started, things would go smoothly. He estimated the job would take roughly 2 days. The first day of scheduled work, he and Josiah arrived promptly and I was amazed at how fast they had everything covered/protected and immediately got to work. The painting went quickly, it looks beautiful and the job was completed in about a day and a half. Jonathan was everything you could hope for in a contractor; prompt, courteous, professional and exceptional at his craft. I'm very pleased with the results and will call him again for future projects.

In January my husband and I were discussing painting one room in the house. We pondered over how to reach the extra tall cathedral ceilings. We decided to hire a painter instead and let a professional do the work! We'd worked with other painters in the past and had always had bad experiences. From one painter who spilled a gallon of white paint on the dark roof of the house, to another painter who spilled paint on my hardwood floors. I sought out Johnathan after reading his exceptional reviews on Angies List. Johnathan worked around my goofy schedule to come in for a quote. I knew we would be hiring Johnathan as soon as I met him in person. I have nothing negative to say about Touchstone Painting and Johnathan (owner). Johnathan is polite, professional, maintains a clean appearance, is extremely helpful when it came to things I was uncertain of about how to address an area of painting. Johnathan cleaned up after himself daily, always picking up his wares so as to not interfere with our daily living. He was extremely careful to cover all of our furnishings and floors so as to not spill paint on our things. When he was all done he returned everything back to it's original home. I intend to hire Johnathan again in the future for our next painting or staining job. You will not be disappointed when you hire Johnathan at Touchstone Painting. Give him a call TODAY! You won't be sorry! THANK YOU JOHNATHAN FOR A JOB WELL DONE!
Description of Work: I needed most of my interior walls repainted. I was tired of looking at white dingy dirty looking walls. Besides not knowing what colors I wanted, I wasn't sure how to work around some of our arched door ways and curved walls. I also wanted to install some chair rail in one room and had thought about doing it myself. Johnathan was right on when he recommended a carpenter to help me with the chair rail and a designer to help me with paint colors and where to put them. My house is such a joy to walk into now I find myself just staring at the awesomeness of the quality of work and the sheer transformation my house went through by being repainted. Part of that transformation was taking Johnathan's recommendation to repaint all the trim and door frames in the house. Having clean walls, fresh paint, and inviting trim and door frames is such a nice feeling.

When we found a repossessed home that we loved, we were nervous about the work that would need to be done in 1 week between closing on the house and the movers arriving. I was also nervous about picking the right colors. Jonathan patiently walked me through the whole process with referrals at the paint store to help me find the colors that suited me. He came right on time the first day, and patched holes and started with the painting. He was positive, cheerful, and put me right at ease, which was very helpful because I was nervous with the move and problems that kept arising in other areas. He let me know what he was doing, and his plans as he went along. When the plumber had to make a hole in the kitchen ceiling, it was "No problem, I can fix that." Even with a big snowstorm mid-week, and unexpected additional work, they finished before the movers arrived. Even though he had other jobs to do, he kept his commitment to us, which was pretty remarkable considering that our closing date kept changing. Most amazing to me, was the beautiful work. Every hole that was patched you can't tell that anything was done. It's perfectly smooth and covered. The hole in the kitchen ceiling was done after the walls were painted, so he painted the kitchen ceiling, then re-did the edging on the top of the walls so it would look the best. He paid meticulous attention to the details. All of the cutting-in and edges are absolutely perfect. Not a drop of paint was spilled onto our hardwood floors, which were covered and protected. He also covered the carpeted stairs with plastic. One of his workers accidentally broke the cover on the kitchen fluorescent light, and his worker purchased a new one replaced it - of course at no additional charge. There were no hidden fees or surprises when the bill came. The paint he used was top of the line, and when I went to the paint store to pick the colors, the interior decorator there said how much they respected him, and how honest he was. She said that she didn't think that he would know how to be dishonest. All of his recommendations and work was top of the line. Even though our "new" house is 15 years old, it looks better than new, thanks to Jonathan and his impeccable work. Anyone who hires him is lucky to have his professionalism and beautiful work. With his positive an open personality, I also felt as though we were friends by the time he was through. Thank you, Jonathan!!

The ceiling was a huge challenge. It is the ceiling over three very large rooms. It has a complex series of architect-designed contours, and is vaulted with the peak over 20 ft high. It had a thick coat of a green/gray pickling that was done in the 70's by a prior owner. We wanted to see the real wood. The effort required the team to stand on scaffolding and ladders for weeks, holding electric sanders over their heads while sawdust fell on their faces. Jonathan and the team were true professionals and managed with the problems without complaining. We also had difficulty deciding on the stain and finish to use. Jonathan and the team patiently helped us through a lengthy decision process with samples of options on various boards that afterwards needed to be refinished again (and sometimes again). The effort took over twice as long as Jonathan had estimated and in the end cost us over twice as much as we expected. We felt it was reasonable to pay more than originally agreed because the effort was so difficult. In the end we essentially paid him by the hour for the work which seemed fair. The final result is OUTSTANDING! It is beautiful and we are very pleased. We highly recommend Jonathan and his team. fyi: Jonathan was not the low bidder (we had 4 others bid the project), but he gave us the most confidence he could get it done. We think we made a good decision. Also, we are in the process of another paint project right now in the rest of the house. We decided to let our general contractor do the painting in addition to the floors, doors and windows he is doing for us. We felt that if something was damaged we had one person responsible. As I write this I wish I had used Jonathan for this project too...
Description of Work: Jonathan and two others did a GREAT job of refinshing a vaulted wood ceiling - pine wood planks and large exposed wood beams.

We have never been so impressed with a painter. Johnathan Richards (the owner) arrived on time and we walked from room to room and discussed the work that needed to be done. He actually took pictures as we walked through the house. He then prepared a detailed proposal of the work we discussed and we had the proposal by the next day. We hired him right away. He is the neatest painter I have ever dealt with. His work was incredible and at the end of the day we would discuss what would be done the following day. He would always arrive the next day and on time. He was in our home about 4 days. I would definitely hire him again. He did an excellent job.
Description of Work: The living room, dining room, hallway, kitchen and family room on the first floor were painted. The walls in all of these rooms were painted with two coats of paint. Some of the walls required some prep work before the walls could be painted and in some of the rooms cracks had to be repaired and mudded. In the kitchen counter area there was some very old caulking that needed to be removed and replaced. There were also some areas that were spot painted in the family room..

The owner was very thorough in assessing the work to be done. His proposal spelled out exactly what work would be done, including the brand, color, and types of paint used. He quoted an actual price, not an estimate. Workers arrived on time each morning. The plan (or any changes) for work each day was communicated to us. At his suggestion, the ceilings in the rooms that we had already painted were cut-in using the wall color that we had. This gave us a straight, clean line that we hadn't been able to do ourselves. All paint lines are clean, no drips, and no splatters. We are more than pleased with the outcome!
Description of Work: We hired Touchstone Paint to paint our 2-story front foyer, first floor hallway to the laundry room, up the stairway, and the ND floor hallway. Walls, ceiling, all trim, and doors (facing the foyer) were painted. In addition, all ceilings connected on the ST floor (in rooms that we had previously painted e.g. kitchen, family room) were also painted. They repaired and primed all drywall imperfections, damaged joints, nail holes, and damaged walls prior to painting.

The quality of Touchstone's work was excellent. Several other tradesman as well as my highly critical father-in-law were impressed. The pricing was right in line with the two other bids I received (non Angie's list). What I appreciated most was Jonathan's flexibility with the extras we threw at him. He finished them within the original schedule and for a very reasonable cost. A very good experience - not something I've had with other painters in recent years.
Description of Work: Jonathan and his team prepped and painted about 2/3 of our interior, as well as a good deal of stain and polyurethane on several wood surfaces. Rooms included the living room, dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms, an in-wall bookcase and several built in shelves.

Jonathan did most of the work himself. Occasionally he did bring in some help. We had arranged up front that we were willing to have this large job done over a couple of months, in between other work that Jonathan had going on. That way, we never felt like the painters took over the house for weeks on end.....and he was able to take other jobs when they came his way and needed to be done quickly. It is an arrangement that worked out pretty well for us since we had to travel for 2 weeks in the middle of this job and did not want to have people painting in our home while we were away. He would always finish a job completely (a set of rooms or room) and then move on to another job. He never once left materials or a mess sitting around waiting for his return. He was also very good at communicating so we never once wondered when he was coming back. Jonathan is really easy to have in your home. Never once made a mess.........actually, I think he may have left some locations cleaner than when he arrived. He was prompt and communicated really well and frequently. I appreciate that he was able to communicate via email as it is just much easier for me to deal with a quick message that way during the day rather than phone calls. After we met Jonathan we were convinced we wanted to hire him. We were worried that his quote would be higher given how meticulous he was during the quoting process. However, he ended up being much more reasonable than some other highly rated painters on Angies List. We will never hire a different painter......he's that good.
Description of Work: Jonathan painted a good portion of our house -- an 18 foot foyer/living room/dining room/kitchen/master bathroom/powder room/2 additional bathrooms/two hallways/laundry room/and one bedroom. He also painted almost every piece of trim and every door in our entire house. The trim was in pretty bad shape and much of it probably had never been painted for the last 15 years. All in all, he probably painted about 2500 square feet of house........and much of it was pretty difficult to get at (18 foot foyer with crown molding at the ceiling area, for example). The house looks amazing and the quality of his work is really very good.

Jonathan was fantastic! He was prompt in returning phone calls, setting up appointments, and getting started on the work. He gave us a quote that we felt was fairly priced - and it was a quote, not an estimate, so we knew going in exactly how much it was going to cost. The quality of the work was excellent. He did the painting himself - he was very meticulous and it looks terrific! On top of the great work, he's a very nice guy that I felt very comfortable having in my home and since I'm a stay at home mom with a 15 month old son, that was important to me. He even gave me a recommendation for an electrician for other work in our home. Overall a great job. Would definitely use him again!

Jonathan (the owner) did a great job and communicated well the entire time. He helped us understand the options available with No VOC paint and provided us options on how to fix the poor work done by whoever previously painted the room. He performed the work very efficiently, was very polite and did a great job cleaning up after the work was done. Would recommend him to my friends and family.
Description of Work: Painted a large room for a nursery, including the ceiling and trim work and that room's portion of a Jack & Jill bathroom. We had primed the room, so Jonathan also touched up the areas we missed and fixed the areas where the previous owner had messed up the baseboards and windows.

They did an amazing job on our home. Jonathan had come initially to give us an estimate of the job and quoted us a very reasonable price which had included all materials. He even recommended a few colors, which I ended up choosing and loving. The whole process took just one day (about 8hrs). He was very punctual, and detail oriented.....a definite perfectionist which pleased me! They even caulked my stairway which had started to fall away from the wall. Wonderful job, and we will definitely be using them for future projects!
Description of Work: We had the interior of the foyer, 1st & 2nd floor hallways and stairway walls painted.

The whole process went very well! Jonathan started by walking through our home (with his camera) and taking notes, pictures, etc. and then providing a detailed estimate via email (love the email part - much prefer to deal with contractors via email than phone). He was very thorough, throughout the whole process. Jonathan is incredibly detailed - a perfectionist. He was priced in the middle - perhaps a little higher than other painters, but I preferred to deal with someone that spoke English - he could really communicate with me so that added to why I chose him. He has an incredible work ethic and is very reliable. We kept adding additional work to his list and he was very patient with us. The only issue we've had and it is teeny is that the paint on the doors tends to chip - but Jonathan is very approachable and is more than willing to touch that up for us.
Description of Work: All wallpaper was stripped from our walls. Walls were patched, primed and painted - as were all of the doors and trim.

Jonathan did great on a very tedious task. He was professional and conscientious and his prices were more than fair. I will recommend him to family and friends knowing that he will do a great job.
Description of Work: Jonathan sanded and painted a wrought iron fence...a job I wouldn't want to do!

Jonathan and his crew were great, they showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves and performed excellent workmanship. The price he quoted is the price I paid, when the job was completed. Jonathan is extremely good at drywall repair work. I have recommended them to several of my friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: Jonathan, painted several rooms and ceilings for me.
