He was professional and amiable, knowledgeable and quick.
Description of Work: Rotten door frame on bottom of front door and rotten wood decorative sides needed replacing, and needed proper sealing of doorframe from stone porch. The carpenter knew what he was doing, explained it all thoroughly, and did great work getting rid of the rot and replacing it will non-rotting materials. Also did some preventative things for keeping the remaining wood in great shape.

I set up the appointment and my husband met with Stan. I was very disappointed, because the reviews on Angie's list had been positive for this contractor. The shower tiles in my bathrooms are displaced and loose because of problems with the backing (two other contractors have told me that the tiles need to come off in the affected area and the backing replaced, in addition to caulking and grouting). Stan's solution was to regrout and recaulk -- completely glossing over the underlying problem, which is obvious even to the inexperienced eye.
Description of Work: I asked Stan to come out and give an estimate for repairing and cleaning displaced and moldy shower tiles.

It went very well, the window was broken and we didn't have enough shingles and some other part of the roof were missing. Ed talked to the people we ordered the shed from, they sent some replacement parts and Ed could buy some of the others to match. This process was exceptional. as Ed called and looked at the company installations on the net. The shed was pricey, but I had no idea the installation would be so much. But they were here for 9 days (not full days) and they did have to buy some parts. And the final product looks great. The colors we picked for the shed matched the house and it really looks beautiful.
Description of Work: Ordered a shed on line and had it delivered to my home. Then Stan and Ed put the shed up. They needed to lay a foundation for the shed and put it together. It was a wooden shed with shingles and windows. (Not one of those plastic ones).

Extremely well from start to finish. Stan was able to provide a plumber on very short notice. The plumber was on time, did his job as requested, and cleaned up to my satisfaction. The plumber was faced with some difficulty as the original installer had siliconed the toilet the the floor and had glued the sink to the wall. One of the original fittings on the sink wouldn't close properly so the plumber went to the hardware store, bought and new fitting and got it installed without any leaking. He was a great guy and an excellent plumber.
Description of Work: A plumber was needed to remove the sink and toilet prior to and after the bathroom was painted. He had to remove the fixtures from the bathroom in order for the painters to proceed. After painting, the plumber returned and reinstalled everything.

Terrific...they have done other work for us including a basement remodel and some additional work on odds/ends around our house at times. We love working with Stan and Ed and they are incredibly dependable / reliable.
Description of Work: Stan and Ed seal coated our driveway. It was in bad disrepair with many significant cracks after the past two Chicago winters. As opposed to the basic seal coating in a half hour we've had performed on the driveway in the past, they sealed all the cracks in the driveway with a compound, then applied longer duration seal coat tar that will last well beyond the 6-12 months offered by the mail-in seal coat companies that have done our driveway the past two years. The work performed by Stan and Ed will likely save us the significant expense of completely repaving our driveway and saved us significant money with their work.

I called Stan and he came over within one half hour since he lived so close. He unhooked the uitlity sink with no issues and told me what I needed to buy before I reinstalled the sink which was very nice. Then, I had to replace some electrical fixtures in my bathrooms. Stan needed to check behind the fixtures to see whre the electrical boxes were located. This required crawling onto the counters to get at the fixtures. I had to give Stan alot of help during this and if I wasn't yound and capable, I don't think Stan could have done the work. He was very nice, but did have a tendency to chat alot and, since I'm paying for his time, that can get a little tedious. But, the big issue I have is that he pushed his workers on me to do other work. These workers are NOT on Angie's list. But, Stan is running his own business and uses his contacts through Angie's lIst to get you to hire HIS people. His wanted to give me tile, painting and building people. When I mentioned that they weren't on Angie's List, he indicated that it wasn't important. I began to feel uncompfortable and he called a number of times to try to get me to use his painting man. I just think that it may not be professional to use Angie's customers to get your non-rated contractors work.
Description of Work: Stan had to unhook a utility sink and then also checked behind some light fixtures for the electrical box.

A guy named Bruce came to our condo on a Saturday to mount our flat panel TV, fix a bi-fold closet door that was falling off its hinges and repair a gap in our hardwood floor. He was punctual and friendly and did a very professional job for a reasonable price.
Description of Work: Mounted a flat panel TV on the wall, fixed a bi-fold closet door and fixed a gap in our hardwood floor.
They arrived at the house on time, gave an estimate how much it would cost, started the day they arrived. The painting and plastering went as scheduled and took a week and a half just like they said it would. The flooring is yet to be completed but is scheduled for this coming Monday. The toilets and sink were replaced and worked out great. There was a problem with one of the water lines which they fixed. We are very pleased with the out come and hope that the finished product will help us sell our house.
He came and gave us a quote. There are a lot of contractors that aren't responsive. His prices were higher than the guy we ended up going with. We would not use him in the future.

Our basement flooded in September with all the flooding here in the Chicago area. I have rated some folks, but these have been my most favorite people to deal with. We have found so many great people, but the basement just looks phenomenal. It's basically a two man team, and not only have they been professional, but the quality has been amazing. they go out of their way not only so we understand not only what we have asked them to do but several options during the remodeling process, they have noticed several things throughout the house that are glaring issues, and have offered to fix those. All the receipts are provided each week, they don't charge anything above the cost of the supplies. They only charge $100 per hour for two guys to come work.
Description of Work: We contracted these guys to tear up the basement and re-do it. The work isn't done yet, it is still a work in progress.

One of Stan's guys removed a water heater in the morning so that a crack in the foundation directly behind it could be repaired in the afternoon. Then he came back later that afternoon and reinstalled it. Quick and easy, no complications or surprises, and right on time. Very accommodating of the tricky scheduling demands around the foundation repair. Took much less time than other water heater specialists & plumbers told me it would take (i.e. about 2 hours total rather than 4 to 6).

I called Stan to help with four items, toilet installation, a crack in a brick floor, flooring transitions/thresholds and exterior window seals. I was very specific about wanting on an estimate and not wanting to pursue any jobs that seemed too costly. He gave me an estimate for the toilets, but nothing specific about the other jobs. The toilets were more difficult than he anticipated and he stuck to the quote, but he charged me $500 to fix the crack in the floor which was done with joint repair and not tuckpointed. I would not have agreed to that price - although I did lose a bit of control over the project because I had to leave town for a funeral and left my husband in charge. That said, the man who he sent to fix the crack was very chatty and spent a lot of time socializing, looking at my roof, etc. Had I known that he was charging me $100 per hour to chat with him, I would have gladly told him to get about his business and not let him do anything but work on the project. It was a nice conversation, but definitely not worth the money. In the end, we did not get the threshhold situation resolved although I do own a bunch of quarterround and I got no opinion about the exterior seals - even after I complained and Stan said he would come by and check them out at no charge. I had a conversation with Stan to tell him I would be writing this on Angies List so he would have an opportunity to either reduce his price or make up for the missing work and he did not seem interested. Stan is a nice guy who I would have liked to work with more, but I can't use him again when I get that surprised by a bill for work that I was trying to do for a reasonable cost. Best of luck to him.
Description of Work: He installed two toilets and fixed a crack in the floor. He also worked on a solution to a flooring transition problem and was supposed to inspect the window seals.

When I called for an estimate, Stan sent over Ed, a person with whom he worked. Ed was very good, finding several items that would effect the work and that other companies did not notice. Stan then gave me a quote which was very good. He also assured me that I did not need a permit for the work. I had never done a project like this, so I checked this with him again, He again told me that I did not need a permit. Needless to say, after Stan started work, the village stopped it since we did not have a permit. This caused the cost of the entire project to increase dramatically over Stan's estimate. Luckily, Ed did most of the work. He knew what he was doing and was skilled at his work. Stan did not seem to be knowledgeable about his business. After insulating a wall, the thermostat on it was not working properly. Stan could not figure it out and said he had never seen a thermostat like mine before. It was the top rated CU thermostat. Ed took care of the problem. When I asked Stan about a cover in the floor that was going to be covered by carpeting, he said he did not know what to do about it as he had never seen one like it. It was a cover for access to a pipe so it could be rodded out easier if need be. It can be found in many basements. As part of the cost of the project, I had agreed to pay for items purchased by Stan with a percentage markup. Before paying, I asked to see the receipts. When I went through them, I found that Stan was not just charging me for materials put into my home (i.e., wood, wallboards, light fixtures, etc.) but he was also trying to charge me for a suede tool belt he bought himself, a drill bit set for his business, a hole cutter and other items which he needed for his business. He tried to tell me that he needed the hole cutter especially for my recessed lights which, he claimed, were "unique." HE BOUGHT THEM AT HOME DEPOT! HOW UNIQUE CAN THEY BE? In all, I found that Stan tried to overcharge me about $500.00. He then kept complaining to me that he was losing money on my remodeling job. I would suggest that he either learn how to do his job or find a new profession. The room looks nice, but it cost me far more than Stan said it would and I had to watch him and check on his work constantly. He will never do work in my house again.
Description of Work: After water damage, we decided to remodel the basement family room.

SINCE THIS REPORT DOES NOT STATE THE ACTUAL FACTS, I FEEL IT NECESSARY TO RESPOND, I HAVE RECEIVED THE SUPER SERVICE AWARD THE LAST TWO YEARS, IN 5 CATEGORIES. MY COMPANY CERTAINLY KNOWS WHAT IT TAKES TO DO A JOB CORRECTLY. I NEVER ASSURED THE MEMBER THAT HE DIDN'T NEED A BUILDING PERMIT. THE PRICE WENT UP DUE TO EXTRA WORK NECESSARY, THAT WE WOULDN'T PAY FOR. HE FORGOT TO MENTION THAT HE GAVE ME TWO BAD CHECKS. THERE IS ALWAYS A BAD APPLE IN THE BUNCH.

Initially, I received an estimate of $300 for the work. Stan sent another person to do the Job and he turned out to be totally incompetent. I had asked him to add trim to the bottom of the paneling, but all he did was add a piece of plywood that didn't even match. He failed to clean up after himself, and didn't even know to replace a battery on the front doorbell. Stan apparently got someone one else to do the work and wound up charging me twice what he had estimated. He claimed it took longer to fix the TV, but he should have told me that before he did the work. It says something about his estimating ability and his judgment.

The repairs were done to a toilet that is used very infrequently. It is located in a guest bedroom that is probably occupied for two weeks per year. The running of the toilet was a minor irritation, but I decided to go forward with the repairs because I wanted to take care of the problem once and for all. Stan and his partner made the repairs and, as far as I knew, everything was fine. Unfortunately, two months later when we had a guest in the bedroom and the toilet was getting used regularly for the first time since the repairs, the toilet leaked from the base. The leak caused extensive damage to the ceiling and woodwork of the room below (which had just been renovated). To repair the toilet, I opted not to have Stan the Handyman return, instead opting to call a professional plumber. He inspected the toilet and realized that the job had been botched. The replacement parts used were cheap and, most importantly, did not fit our American Standard toilet. Because they were the wrong parts for our toilet, when the toilet was receiving regular use, it leaked extensively. Additionally, the tank of the toilet was not attached properly after the repairs and it moved about quite a bit. Had the plumber had access to the original American Standard parts, he may have been able to work with them to stop the running of the toilet. Instead, at this point, we will probably have to replace the entire toilet. This is an extremely expensive solution for a running toilet! Plumbing does not appear to be an area of expertise for Stan the Handyman.
Description of Work: I asked Stan to look at a toilet in our guest bathroom that had been running occasionally. He and his partner determined that it required the replacement of several parts. They purchased the parts and returned at a future date to install them.
