Jon came out and was quite professional - seemed to have some good ideas and a good attitude. Told him our plan for a ktichen remodel, and wanted some specific things done - he came up with some other options to improve our space, improve storage, etc. Essentially our idea was to create an open kitchen which did involve removing a wall. Essentially how Drury Design works is very different from other contractors and design-build firms. They essentially give you an *extremely* vague proposal of different options without giving you any real great sense of where cost is going to be. After the proposal, you put down a $3000 non-refundable retainer, and then the real work begins. We went into this project with a fairly flexible budget, and good rough sketch of what we wanted, with a lot of wiggle room on some of the details. Their estimate for what we initially had envisioned was about twice our budget (I stressed our budget was somewhat flexible but also wanted it to be reasonable and that there were specifics of the project we would have liked). Coincidentally, we did meet with 4 other contractors afterwards, and all came in with estimates at half of what Drury Designs were for a similar project. If you have an *extremely* flexible budget and want a high quality design firm, and are willing to put down money on a leap of faith based on company reputation with no guarantee of work and very little detail on what scope of work they intend to do, then Drury Design may be the firm for you. But there are numerous other contractors and Design-build firms that can probably provide equal quality of work, but will lay it all out for you with a very detailed plan and detailed estimates of where the money in your budget would go *before* putting any money down.

First, our apologies that this response has taken this long; we are not members of this site. Sorry you were disappointed by your initial discussion with someone that you refer to as Jon. We do not now, and in fact, never had an employee named Jon. For your general information, here is how we work. We have a very interactive and client-focused design approach that we have developed over the past 25+ years in business. We will concede however that it is not for everyone, especially those who are looking for a “quick” quote based on providing a minimum of information to a contractor. In our experience, our process has provided the very best outcome for our clients – but we are kind of old-fashioned. Our engagement process starts with a complimentary design consultation which normally lasts 2 to 3 hours. We look at the existing space and ask lots of question in order to fully discuss understand our prospective client’s ideas and goals, including budget goals. After reviewing a myriad of recent work examples, referrals and possible design and material solutions, we then prepare and review a range of remodeling design and cost options and discuss those. Once we have a consensus about the scope, possible layouts, level of details, materials based on budget goals and the homeowner is interested in moving forward, we take a retainer, measure the existing space and fill out an exhaustive design questionnaire to start the design work. This design and proposal is prepared over the course of four additional comprehensive meetings scheduled about every two weeks - which allows us to do our research, and work. In those meetings each decision is discussed and options are provided. All final decisions are made upfront along with plenty of decision homework to take home after each meeting. These final decisions include - the final floor plan and wall elevation drawings, all materials including cabinetry, and all final quotes for trades and installation services. At the conclusion of these four meetings, a lump sum line-item proposal is presented along with full construction drawings and a schedule of work for each day of the installation. The design retainer is applicable to the final price of most of our design projects depending on the room. There are other ways to go about designing and determining the cost of a remodeling project. We and our clients however think this is the best way.

This project was for materials only and included no labor or installation services. This transaction was completed in May of 2007. This situation was unusual and upsetting to us as well because these issues very rarely arise as we normally provide installation services. After an extensive design process, Drury Design was contracted to provide very detailed designs, drawings, custom cabinetry & appliances. This job file has over 300 pages of documents and drawings detailing the project’s design and specifications. Regrettably, the homeowners chose to be the general contractor and provided all of the carpentry, trades and installation of the kitchen, contrary to our advice. No labor supervision was promised or given by us as is the case when only materials are provided as indicated in our agreements. Unfortunately, this relationship soured after the kitchen installation was complete due to the homeowner’s dissatisfaction with the installation. Despite addressing the homeowners concerns in person by our management, reaching a final agreement with the homeowner, paying her carpenter for reworking some of the existing cabinets, and providing additional materials – mostly at N/C, we did not get paid in-full. The designer on this project was let go soon after this job was complete, in June of 2007.

I didn't use Drury for the project but was I helped by their advice on more cost efficient ways to get the cabinets adjusted and a new countertop selected.
Description of Work: I was remodeling my kitchen with new counter top and needed to adjust the size of one of my Grabill kitchen cabinets and doors. The folks at Drury were up front about telling me that size of the project was small enough that it would not be cost efficient to engage Drury. Tina, the rep at Drury, provided me with some excellent advice on what to do for my cabinet doors and counter top. When I look at a complete kitchen or bath remodeling project, Drury will be on my list. They are very knowledgable, very professional and have an excellent show room and website.

Gladys was very friendly and had great ideas. She showed us her work and she explained to us what services they would perform. I was disapointed because other contractors we had out measured and showed an idea of the design for my kitchen. Gladys did not even draw a picture. I felt as though I was not spending enough for her company to bother with me. I had a $50,000 budget but she did not feel that they could really do much for that amount of money. The suggestions she made for cabinets to keep the cost down were a poorly rated brand and she did not feel that there was any way she could match our budget. If I wanted them to even give me a drawing of the room with some ideas as to what they could do or even give me an estimate it would cost $3000. This amount would be applied to when I purchased goods but to want money up front before even an estimate and some idea of the work is ridiculous.
Description of Work: Gladys came out to give us an estimate of the cost to do a major kitchen remodeling. She did show us pictures but we could not get an estimate of the total job cost without spending $3000.

First let me say that we are sorry there was a misunderstanding. But after speaking at length with our employee, about this situation, we have a different account of what transpired from our perspective. As part of our normal no-cost, (free) design consultation, we conducted a two-hour interview where we met in your home. We discussed your goals and provided cost estimates in a range of possible budgets and design options. We then provided many photo examples and offered to do sketches to illustrate design options – which were declined. We concluded that we could provide a complete kitchen remodel within your $50,000 budget. We explained, however that it would be impossible to include new floors and knocking down walls at that budget level, but were willing to further explore other design options with you at our design studio at a later date. Our understanding is that you declined because it was not in your budget. We hate to be the bearer of bad news but kitchen remodels are often more costly that people anticipate. We are thankful that our designer provided this information before you made any financial commitment. We pride ourselves in the fact that our business practices are straight forward and truthful. We are an upscale, service oriented company and understand that we are not a good fit for everyone. We hope that you had a good experience with whomever you ended up contracting with.

They did excellent work and provided high craftmanship. They were pleasant to work with all the way through the project. Cleaned up well after themselves. They were worth every penny. Finished the job in a timely manner and came back when I did not know how to work a few appliances to show me what to do. Their follow-up is good.
Description of Work: They did a complete gutting of a kitchen and remodeled it.
