We do appreciate the A rating! Although we are a bit confused, it seems we had scheduled your appointment on 11/15/2018 and it definitely was completed by one of our techs. We definitely do want your business and we do make every attempt at contacting everyone, so we do apologize if there was a mixup on our part, but we are glad we were able to get you scheduled and done. Have a wonderful Holiday season.

The work was performed on May 22 of this year and Wily the technician that I normally get is excellent however the technician that came out this time who's name was Sarge talked me into a very expensive cleaning of my unit which only involved spraying some foam cleaner on the vents. He also tested the pressure and for leaks from inside and did not use the pressure indicators normally attached to the outside compressor. I thought it was a quick inspection and cost too much because of the cleaning.

The tech, Rick, checked and cleaned the air conditioner, which checked out fine. I was worried about some rust on the coil. He assured me that, while it was showing some age, it still had some good life left to it. Additionally, I asked for his thoughts and advice on rerunning the drain line from a condensate pump. The condensate from the high-efficiency furnace had been draining into a condensate pump, which drained into copper pipe, which emptied into the downstairs shower drain. This last spring, several cracks developed in the copper pipe, making it necessary to install new drainage pipe. As Rick explained, condensate from an HE furnace is corrosive, which eats away at the copper. (Look up "high efficiency furnace condensate corrosive" online.) Given how the pipe was run, it would have been a lot of work to install new pipe where the existing pipe is. Between the 2 of us, we hit upon the idea of running new plastic tubing along the ceiling of the basement, to the top of the shower, and installing a piece of PVC in the shower so the tubing doesn't flop around inside the shower. Please note that Freedom did not install the HE furnace or copper tubing. So it was NOT a case of me asking them to fix anything that they had previously done. I really appreciate Rick taking the time to explain to me about how HE furnaces produce corrosive condensate and helping me devise a very nice solution. The solution cost $10 in plastic tubing and a little bit of labor on my part. MUCH cheaper than the $1600 that a plumber had quoted!
Description of Work: Freedom did a yearly check and cleaning of the air conditioner. They also gave some great advice on running a new condensate drain tube.

Claimed 2 of these - one for my home and one for a rental unit down the street. Handled my home fine. My wife was coordinating everything. I received a call from their main office (even though I told them my wife's number multiple times) saying the tech couldn't find parking. When I suggested he park in a standing or loading area and turn his emergency blinkers on, which contractors do all of the time, the person on the phone started yelling at me. She asked me if I would pay for towage fees and kept getting more and more angry with me for no reason. I even asked her why she was yelling at me and she said it was because the tech was driving around for 20 minutes looking for parking ... I don't think that is justification for yelling at your customer who you just collected $300 from for one job. After she continued to yell, I asked her for her name, and she said "It's none of your business, and I don't have time for this dude." Really saddened by this experience as I have used them multiple times with great experience.

Response from Freedom Heating & Cooling
Hello there, in regards to what had happened on your appointment was a much different perception coming from our side. On our 1st appointment with you guys it went pretty smooth, we were able to park easily and walk in and get the tune-up done and we were ready to go into the 2nd property to do the same thing. Our tech was instructed by your wife to follow her so she can lead him to a parking space, which turned out to be the "loading zone" in which you are speaking of, our tech then called the office telling us about this situation, now, if we had to run into the house do a quick clean & check for 15 minutes and run back out hop into the van and take off that would have been just fine to leave our Service Van with thousands of dollars of equipment and higher fines for ticketing for just those few minutes without worrying about the risk of towing. Knowing that we had been there quite a few times in the past, we knew that there was 9 floors of stairs to climb (no elevator) for the 2nd location, meaning that our tech would have to unload and haul that equipment all the way up to the unit, do his tune-up on your system, then bring it all back down and load it back into his truck making a quick tune-up job turn into an event that would take a couple hours to achieve. Now on our last visit with you all we asked to make sure that you had a parking space for us to use and it was not a problem because you had one for us to use, since your wife was driving to the address to lead our tech there, she was the one who needed her parking space. After you told us about the loading zone, our office person did explain that if you would be willing to pay for the risk of towing and sign off on it, we would have no problem turning on the blinkers and leaving the van there for the couple of hours it would take for us to get it done / the other option was to have your wife place her car in the loading zone with her blinkers on so that we can use her parking space in order for us to be able to wave that risk for you. Now, you would think, since you had explained that "other vehicles do it all the time and that we shouldn't worry about it" you would have no problem either taking the responsibility of the possible $700+ towing fine we would incur or having your wife's car there and taking the risk with your own vehicle so that we can get the tune-up done for you. What you did do was start laughing at the woman at the office and told her not to be ridiculous and that you would never agree to signing or doing any of that. Here is something you may not understand, technicians are paid at very high rates, if you want good technicians and you find them, you pay them well so that they don't leave for another company because they are worth keeping. So now think, we had made a repair and it cost $300.00 at the 1st property, which includes parts that we have paid for and paying a high hourly rate to a good technician to do it. After that, if you can imagine time and gas spent on making an attempt at just getting into the 2nd property then any profit we had made was lost on it since it was much more than the 20 minutes you are claiming it took us not only to follow your wife around Chicago to find us a legal parking space, but also to have to explain that we will not take monetary risk for leaving our van with hazard lights on to do your tune-up for the $39.00 deal you had claimed from the Angie's list deal we were running at this time. Although there was a debate about these actual facts, there was no yelling, and even though there was no yelling we were ridiculed and called names because we were unable to rick our truck outside a loading area with blinkers on at the high risk of parking enforcement will see a commercial van and come tow it before we are done with climbing up & down 9 flights of stairs with heavy tools and other equipment. We will apologize for any misunderstanding that has come from our side of this, but we wish we could explain in a manner to you that you may understand us better, as such, if you will not take the risk with your wife's car, why would you expect us to take the risk with our Work Van? If it just so happens to get towed, it's not just the loss of the tow fee's and fines, it's also the loss of the work that is on our technician's rout for the day, imposing an inconvenience to our many other customers whom had scheduled with us well ahead of time. We wish you the best with your next company, and hope they will not mind taking a risk as such in order to provide you with optimal service at the lowest cost possible. Best of luck to you.

Highly incompetent this time around. They set up an appointment with me for 2-5pm to service my unit. The guy called me at 9am to tell me that he will be there within an hour... Cool... 10am is totally 2-5pm. Then they call me to tell me that they circled the block, and can't find parking, while there is an open spot literally in front of my building that I can see. They proceeded to tell me that it's my problem that they couldn't find parking. I talked to their manager who was perfectly pleased with the fact that sometimes they just can't service places. Use this incompetent people only if you want to waste your day on excuse ridden "professionals" who are only good at making their problems yours.

We can absolutely understand your frustrations as to how this had worked out on this particular day, but there seems to be a lot of key points that you have missed in your complaint. We did call you earlier than you were scheduled, but we had asked if you wanted us to get the job done earlier for you rather than later, which you had gladly agreed to. After our technician had gotten the okay from you, he headed out. Now according to what you have said, we just called and headed out there without giving you the option whatsoever, but being that technicians are very expensive and so is the cost of sending one out, that alone should tell you why we just don't call and say "we're coming" and head out because that would be a huge waste of time and money if you were just unavailable. As our tech arrived, he did call you, asked if you could provide parking due to the fact that he had been circling your block for at least 30 minutes and at that point which you quickly responded to us "well parking your vehicle is not my problem, so do what you have to do". The open space you speak of was never pointed out by you at all at any time, and the only open spot our tech did see was for the bar that is directly to the right of your building, which was reserved for their Valet, and there were very clear signs explaining that which would cause us problems with being towed and ticketed. After our tech's 6th circle around the block, we here at the office had called and explained that parking was not possible for the time, so we can definitely try again for the originally scheduled time which was 2-5pm, it was then you began cursing at all of us in the office. Once the manager had gotten a hold of the call, you began yelling at her stating that this was not your " (F)ing" problem and that we had wasted your "(F)ing" time and that all of us were incompetent idiots and that you had no Idea how we stay in business, even though she made every attempt to try to accommodate you with us coming back when there would be parking possibly and you still were Irate to the point of insulting all of us which ended with you hanging up the phone. First of all sir, we are not incompetent idiots, we've been in business for 13 years now and growing stronger every quarter due to our ability to help our good customers at competitive low rates. Second, many love to explain away things they can do nothing about with phrases such as the most popularly coined "that is not my problem" and the truth is, it is not our problem to deal with either and you being as Irate & disrespectful as you were with us is a telltale sign that you've had this issue more than once or twice with other companies. As we stand now, we wish to no longer be a problem for you, we no longer wish to pay our technician, high gas prices and insurances in order to not find parking at your residence to help you any longer. We wish you the best of luck in finding someone who will take your problems as theirs, those who will deal with your condescending & disrespectful attitude towards those you need services from for the lowest price possible.

Willie and Nick were amazing. They went above and beyond to help my 88 year old neighbor with her 40 year old AC unit. When they couldn't get it going, they stayed and put a window unit in her bedroom so she had some AC comfort. These guys are the Best. Not only do the guys at Freedom do a great job but this is a company with a heart. I feel lucky I have them to call when there is a problem. Use these folks...you won't be disappointed.

Freedom Heating & Cooling performed our annual Summer A/C Inspection and maintenance check up. We have been using Freedom for quite sometime and have always been pleased with their service and expertise. Our service technician, Sarge was informative, thorough and professional. He explained in detail everything he was inspecting and offered recommendations where warranted. He answered all our questions we had about our heating and cooling system. Sarge thoroughly inspected our A/C unit, washed and replaced a rusted component. After he completed his service, we noticed that our A/C system was running quieter. We plan to use Freedom for our annual Fall/Winter heating inspection and maintenance check up. Thank you Freedom....

Tune Up went well. It is an old unit so I was a bit anxious I'd get bad news. Sarge was great though. He told me he didn't want to add any new parts to the unit for fear it might cause the unit to respond poorly. The best bet was to keep it going until it dies. Honesty was refreshing. Sarge was very personable and walked me through the cleaning and checking of the system. Was a pleasant surprise. I trust them and will hire again.

After Freedom did my tune up for the furnace on the 1st floor it strangely no longer blew warm air; I decided to replace it at that point because it was no longer under warranty. I decided to go with a different well-known Chicago Furnace/AC installer that I had dealt with before. It was later discovered by the furnace installer that the thermostat merely needed replacing - so an unnecessary furnace replacement was just done just to prevent future expense of furnace breakdowns. Last summer I had new A/C units installed on the 2nd and 3rd floors. My 2nd floor tenant just recently complained that there was water leaking through the ceiling of their furnace closet. I remembered that I saw the Freedom tech had disconnected the A/C PVC drain pipe for some reason while he was doing the furnace tune up for the 3rd floor but I assumed he would put it back together and re-caulk it. Since it has been hot my tenants have been running their A/C (beginning of June) which creates more condensation that drains into the PVC pipe then the kitchen drain. The drains were both rodded after the new A/C was installed so that was definitely not the issue. The ceiling above the 2nd floor furnace (and under the 3rd floor furnace) is now ruined - the plaster fell down and the joists got wet from the leak that was not immediately unnoticed because A/C units have just been turned since the beginning of June. Upon inspecting the PVC drain pipe, I discovered all of the caulk had been cut from around the pipe where it connects to the galvanized drain and not replaced. After some silicone application by myself and waiting for it to cure, the leak has stopped. I wonder what the reason would be to disconnect the A/C drain pipe if the furnace is being serviced? When the new A/C units were installed for 2nd/3rd floors and the units ran the entire summer, nobody had complained about any leaks so I do not believe that is when the problem first started. So now I have to deal with a damaged ceiling that a furnace is sitting on top of (there is a concrete block under the 3rd floor furnace) due to contractor error. I really don't appreciate my property being damaged by a careless contractor nor the headaches that I now have to deal with to fix this problem. The old saying goes, "sometimes you get what you pay for" - I am learning that the cheapest deal is not always the best one out there.

Willie quickly identified the issue highlighted by my home inspector and determined it wasn't a problem. Knowing I was a first time home owner, he then explained how my furnace worked and described what I would see if various sub-systems failed. In addition, he disspelled concern that I needed to address a second issue identified by the home inspector, further saving me money. He also provided several recommendations about how to best extend the life of the system I do own.

The service person, Willie, was very knowledgeable and explained several things I need to do to help keep the air conditioning in good shape. My system is a few years beyond the normal life span so he recommended replacing it if a minor R22 freon leak continues. He said I would need an expensive leak test and since R22 is no longer produced, it is very expensive. I had gone beyond the expiration of the deal but they were nice enough to honor it anyway. Thank you very much!!

Our HVAC unit was not working properly. The Freedom Heating & Cooling technician looked at the unit and told us that we needed to replace the freon and the TXV unit - he quoted us a cost of $2,000 - $2,500 for this. Yikes. When we looked at prices online, we learned that these items should each cost only $100 - 200. We couldn't believe it. Skeptical about this $2,500 estimate, we had another technician from a different company look at the HVAC unit. He examined the unit and concluded that: 1) the freon levels were fine, and 2) this HVAC unit DOES NOT EVEN HAVE A TXV UNIT! Wow. Freedom Heating & Cooling wanted to charge us $2,500 to replace freon levels that were already sufficient and to replace a part that the HVAC unit apparently does not even have. Turns out that the problem was just a simple leak that can be fixed for under $100. That's a lot better than the $2,500 that Freedom Heating & Cooling wanted to charge. Save yourself the trouble. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE! There are plenty of better options.

We thank you so much for the review! We would like to explain in best detail for you why a leak fix for $100.00 would not make sense in your case. When dealing with compressors that are over 17 years old 'such as yours there' there are metering devices that are installed inside the actual [Member Information Removed] and all though there are many different types, the main type would be called a "TXV" valve. Now, keep in mind, we are not one to charge you labor time simply to find out which valve you have , so to be exact on what you had inside your compressor, our tech would have had to open the whole a/c and take it apart to find out which metering device you had - which would cost you $109.00 per hour to do just that. Since our technician did a pressure test for your refrigerant levels and found out that the high side pressure is much too high for a normally functional system with a bad metering device, he explained that it could be a "txv valve" that may have been bad - without having to charge you to open up your a/c to find out the EXACT metering device that you had inside. Now , being that your system is over 17 years old, which is 2 years beyond the normal lifespan any a/c, he suggested that instead of spending over $1000 to fix your metering device that it probably would be more worth your money to get a new system installed. Now, being that your refrigerant pressures were very high on the high side , it tends to mean there may be leaking from the metering device (generally would be a TXV). What we can tell your "other" guy probably did for $100.00, is throw in some leak seal to get you through the rest of the summer -and- after trying to make us look as if we were being dishonest, he tells you that it should be fine. Keep in mind, leak seal is not fixing a leak, it is a bandaid placed on an issue that will gradually get worse and worse as time goes on. What will wind up happening is that you will be needing refrigerant added again this next upcoming spring/summer after you realize that it will not blow cool air again. A lot of times we as humans like to jump to conclusions because we are in constant fear of being taken advantage of, and when the person who comes along makes it look temporarily great and inexpensive to bandage an issue for the time being -although at the time at a lower cost - it can start to add up after needing the similar repairs to happen over and over again. We wish you the best with your new company, hopefully they will be honest with you the next time around and they let you know that you will be needing a new system otherwise it'll just keep costing you money over time.
