I took an older computer in for a repair / estimate. I spent $50 I was told the drive was shot and needed to be replaced. Data recovery would be more. I paid the bill and took the computer to a neighbor who parts them out. A week later the neighbor returned the computer, he said it had some bad disc sectors, but he reformatted the disc and now it works. I called Nerds and their response was, "Well the drive was gonna go bad again anyway so we just tell people to replace them." The drive is still working flawlessly.

We told the customer that his hard drive had bad sectors and needed to be replaced. The customer's "friend" agreed with our assessment. When dealing with hard drive's with bad sectors you might be able to reformat and reload the hard drive, but you will eventually run into problems down the road. A bad sector is something that is physically wrong inside of a hard drive. If you have bad sectors it's typically caused by a faulty drive head and the problem can quickly spread to other parts of the hard drive. That's why our recommendation was to replace the hard drive, so whether it be two days or two years, the customer won't lose valuable data that he may have on his hard drive due to bad sectors. The hard drive may have worked for him when it was reloaded, but he will eventually have more problems down the road. We also only charged $40 for this diagnosis, so his bill was not $50.
