The work done was very good. You must be sure to state the style, color, options you want. The workshop wanted to put in a wood color stain that I did would not have wanted. I picked out a color and also left photos of the original truck. This helped ensure that the wood turned out gorgeous and really made the piece pop visually. Also, if you need it done by a certain date, you must state that clearly. I brought this in May and stated I did not need this right away. My work was pushed back due to other work the shop had. I almost missed the date I thought it would be done by and that was Thanksgiving.

Jim Tudor was incredible to work with from start to finish. He came to our home to measure and determine how much needed to be removed from the chairs in order to comfortably fit under our counter. He performed the work in less time than originally estimated (2 days rather than 3) and accommodated our schedule to allow U.S. time to pick up the chairs after his workshop closed. Could not have asked for a better experience. Price, professionalism and level of craftmenship were all A++. I will absolutely use Devontry again

I had a good experience with them. He did a good job. I got them from Angie's List. They are very honest. The furniture I have is very old. The bed is from the '50s and the tray table is from 1970's. I was thinking of fixing up the finish on it but he was telling me since I don't have the whole set, I gave part of the set to my daughter, that it would be a waste of money to refinish it, and then put the set together and we refinish it again and it's not going to match. He was very honest in his opinion even though he was turning down work.
Description of Work: I brought my furniture in to Devontry LLC and he basically had to re-glue some parts to my butlers tray table, and then I have a twin bed upstairs that the dowels came loose so he had to re-glue the dowels and everything.

When I phoned Devontry, I was told that I could come right over. I brought the chair and table, and the person looked at it and gave an estimate and time frame. I left a $300 deposit. I was told to expect a call in three-four weeks to come choose a finish. Three-four weeks later, I returned to see the table and chair after they had been stripped of their red paint finish. The person told the in detail exactly what had been done and would be done next. I learned that the table was mahogany and the chair beech. The person helped me choose a finish. He also discussed options for reupholstering the chair, which had a small upholstered seat. Three-four weeks later, I returned and picked up the table and chair. They look magnificent. The finishes are smooth, glowing, and tolerant of normal use. Devontry had made a new panel for the chair upholstery to be inserted on. The table is home, and I took the chair to an upholsterer that Devontry recommended. Could not be more pleased!

They matched the grain and finish nicely but the new leg is nearly vertical while the original three splay outward. The chair is stable and sound but the difference in the angle of the new leg is noticeable.

Very well. They are not always there, but I called and left a message and they responded within a day. We're very accommodating. Repairs held up for the whole run....Nathan Lane was safe every time he sat down!
Description of Work: Devontry repaired 6 or 7 antique chairs that we did not have the time to repair (these were for a play at the Goodman Theatre). We were in a time crunch and they were wonderful to accommodate us. There were some Unrepairable chairs and they were very honest about these not being candidates for their service.

Wondeful. The work is perfect and the guys at the Devontry are easy to work with and obviously very skilled at wooodworking.
Description of Work: I inherited a 1940's Heywood Wakefield vanity that had a mirror frame, but the mirror broke decades ago. I dropped the huge wooden mirror frame off at Devontry and they ordered the huge mirror, attached it to the frame and brought it over to the house and attached it to the back of the vanity.

Devontry refinished my old dinning table. It looks wonderful. They were well priced, professional, picked up and returned the table in the time that they had estimated. I will use them in the near future to refinish and repair the dinning room chairs. I would strongly recommend them.

I brought the chairs and table over (in parts). They went over the job with me and we agreed upon a color as well as recommendations for upholstery (which was done separately). They had everything done within a month or so and the set looks like new though it's probably at least 80-100 years old.

Devontry picked up the pieces, and returned them as they were completed, in 2 different trips. Took a bit longer than I'd anticipated but after seeing the quality of the work, it was OK.
Description of Work: Devontry workshop completely refinished/repaired numerous antiques (from my husbands' Grandmothers family) that hadn't been touched since the 1920's (highboy, lowboy, secretary, antique bed, dining table and 6 chairs). Incredible amount of detail work. You can tell this man absolutely LOVES woods. Joseph came recommended to me by a friend who also used him for a delicate antique game table.

I purchased eight vintage Baker Chippendale chairs from an antique store. One by one they began to loosen and come apart. I called Devontry to get an estimate on regluing the loose chairs and repairing the ones that had broken. The owner came out the following day to look at the chairs and give me an estimate. It was a reasonable 125 dollars per chair to reassemble the broken ones and take apart and reglue the ones that were loose. It was up to me to get the chairs to the shop as he did not do pickup. I did so and within a reasonable time the chairs were repaired and have held beautifully ever since. I also had them repair a damaged door to a Victorian Amoire that was damaged in a move. He had to secure a hinge that had torn out of the door. The repair is barely visible. I'm extremely satisfied with the quality of the work. I wouldn't trust an antique repair to any other craftsmen. The quality is exceptional and the price is worth it.

Joseph was very professional and we were confidant we took our wood work the right place to get fixed. The holes were filled and colored to match to such a great degree that they are now virtually invisible. Can?t see where the mistakes were made by the other contractor. The new valance also matches our existing cabinet stain color perfectly. Devontry did great work and Joseph stand behind it. We will always come here and not bother to go elsewhere again for any wood like work repairs we need. We actually had Devontry give us a budget price to refinish just our cabinet doors, and unfortunately we decided at the time to take a pass and go elsewhere. In hind sight, I wish we had Joseph do the work. You get what you pay for - lesson learned.
Description of Work: We had another contractor refinish about 36 kitchen cabinet doors and door fronts and also drill holes in them for hardware (door and drawer pulls). The other contractor made some mistakes and for one door, the holes were drilled in the wrong location. The doors are 16+ years old and are no longer made by the manufacturer, so the door needed to be repaired. The other contractor tried to fix it but did not do a very good job at all fixing it after he had it for 2-1/2 weeks. So we took our cabinet door with the holes in it to Devontry to get fixed. We also had bought a new oak valance to add to our cabinet layout and needed it stripped and stained to match the existing cabinets.

I needed an ornate pew refinished. It had been in our family for several generations and moved around quite a bit. They did a wonderful job, repairing and refinishing it in a natural and rich way, not just coating it with varnish to make it glossy, etc. Very pleasant to work with.

I inherited a set of Cherner chairs from my grandfather about 20 years ago. As an apartment dweller I didn't have room for them so they sat in my sisters basement. Over that time the finish on the chairs had really diminished; several had minor water damage and all where dull and yellowed. Doventry did an amazing job of restoring these chairs. I am a woodworker and know a thing or two about refinishing. My expectations were low as I didn't expect that the weathering could be overcome. But WOW did Doventry blow me away. The finish was mirror smooth and the way they were able to bring out the complex grain of the wood was spectacular. These are somewhat unusual chairs (mid-century modern, bent plywood construction) and the owner of the shop was quite excited when I brought them in. He chatted me up about the chairs for 20 minutes (I'd have happily listened for an hour) and gave me a full tour of his shop. This place is GREAT!

I chose Devontry Workshop based on the other reports on Angie's List; high grades and glowing reviews. Now I can add mine to the list! I brought the 4 chairs to the workshop, where their condition was assessed by Mr. Bergmann. "Old-World Craftsman" is certainly a term that came to mind when I met him. He explained what he would do, how long it could take, and told me how much it would cost. All went as described -- the chairs looked and felt brand-new when I went to pick them up! He's a master!
Description of Work: We had 4 Ethan Allen chairs that had been "used hard" for the last 17 years. All the joints were very loose; a bar that runs across the top of one chair had broken off; various puppies had chewed on the bottoms of the chair legs. I brought the chairs to the workshop in Evanston, and Mr. Bergmann ascertained that the chairs were built with dowels (rather than just glued, in which case they would have just been garbage). He stated that he would take each chair apart, tighten all the joints, re-attach the broken piece, and cover the teething marks. The job took less time than he had estimated, and the price seemed very fair (based on my searching the web for furniture repair costs). I would DEFINITELY recommend this company!

We were very pleased with Devontry's work and service. Given the service we received, and after a look around the shop, we would certainly be inclined to use them for larger repair/restoration jobs.
Description of Work: This was a very minor job. We needed to have "face" of an old dresser drawer reattached. Devontry did the job very quickly - about two days. They also reglued the rest of the boards in the drawer, some of which did not appear to need it beforehand.

When we met, we both agreed that the chair was not a well-made piece of furniture, but I explained that I wanted the chair repaired because it was part of a living room set that I hoped to have for a few more years. Josef pointed out that the chair frame was bad around two legs, not just the one leg I had noticed. He said that he couldn't be precise in his estimate because after he repaired the wooden frame of the chair, he would need to send it elsewhere to have the upholstery propered re-installed. We agreed that the final price would be no more than $200 because the chair was not worth a larger investment. As others have said in their reports, I was called that the chair was ready for pick-up sooner than promised. The chair is now solid, and the cost was $200, no more than the limit we had agreed to.
Description of Work: The wooden frame of the seat of an upholstered armchair had split, causing one leg of the chair to collapse. He replaced two wooden crossbars in the seat to strengthen the frame and then realigned those front legs.

I brought the chairs in and was helped immediately. The craftsman looked over the chairs and gave me a quote. Said he could be completed in two weeks. I received a call a little over a week later that my chairs were completed. The work was impeccable, I couldn't tell that the chairs had been repaired.

Josef is wonderful to work with. Both of my pieces were antiques and held great nostalgia for me. He appreciated how wonderful the craftsmanship was and why I would want them repaired. His quotes were dead on and the work was impeccable. I absolutely love the work on both jobs. I was able to take the pieces in to Josef for a quote on the work. The repair work on each is impeccable and the staining looks wonderful. I picked up the dining room furniture when it was done; the chair was delivered to another company per my request. I couldn't be happier with the work. The only area of complaint is that things seemed to take a couple of weeks longer than expected. Because we were not in a rush, this was not a problem but I would suggest planning for additional time.
Description of Work: The first job was the stripping and refinishing of a dining room table, 4 chairs and 2 leaves. The chairs were in need of repair in some places. This cost $2000. The second job was the stripping, repair and refinishing of a rocking chair. The repair work on a bar across the top was hand carved to match the rest of the chair. In addition, the chair was delivered to an upholstery shop for the fabric work.
