Our house is 150 years old, and any work we ever do brings surprises. We had planned to hang a ceiling fan with a light fixture in the kitchen, to replace the old flush mounted globe. When Chris, the licensed & bonded electrician, removed the old fixture, there was nothing from which a ceiling fan could be hung. Meanwhile, we had asked him to estimate the cost of installing an overhead or wall-mounted light in our basement stairwell, as there had never been adequate lighting. After he examined the existing wall switch and wiring, he said it wouldn't work to add a light fixture. We brainstormed running lighting along the steps rather than install an overhead source. I now had 2 reasons to run to Home Depot: pick up a new ceiling light for the kitchen, and buy LED "rope lights" for Chris to run along the steps going down to the basement. While I was gone, he updated our existing switches and wall plugs in the kitchen and by the basement steps to bring them in line with code. When I returned with the necessary lighting, he installed the overhead kitchen light, and then did an absolutely brilliant job (!!!) of running the rope lights down to the basement. What a transformation! He also recommended switching to LED lighting, and gave me tips on exactly the type of bulbs so the spectrum would be right. We are thrilled with the work he did, and the new lighting has brightened our kitchen and made our back steps infinitely safer! Chris Walsh walks on water as far as we're concerned.
Description of Work: Replaced kitchen ceiling light fixture (attempted to hang ceiling fan but it turned out there was inadequate support so we went with a new light fixture); replaced switches/wall plugs with new equipment up to code; installed LED "rope lights" along the top of steps to light our stairs to the basement, as there was no overhead light fixture and no place to install one without extensive construction.

Chris contacted us and we were able to set up an appointment in a timely manner. He was on time and made quick work of the project, removing the track lighting in our kitchen and installing 3 pendent lights in a little over 2 hours. Where as every other contractor quoted us ~$400, we spent a little less than half that and it took half the time we were told by every one else. My wife swears he left the kitchen cleaner than before he started and the quality of the work is excellent, I won't even have to repaint the ceiling. Overall I would highly recommend them.

We moved into this house about a year ago. In that time we have learned a number of items about the vagaries of it's electrical system. We were looking for an electrician who could not only fix some items, but give us insight into the overall functioning of the house's electrical system. On both accounts Chris, from Handyman and Sons, scores highly. I saw in some of the other reviews how he was "overly talkative" however I view this as him taking the time to actually explain what is going on. He traced out the breaker box for our entire second floor, showed me how to do the same, and also gave me some lessons in handling simple tasks. One of the key things he took care in was removing an existing switch. I had a concern that there may have been additional fixtures down stream, and he took the time to carefully measure which wires were carrying current and when he was unable to rule something out did the extra work to ensure that it would keep working. Very high quality work. If there was any downside, it is that he is completely overbooked with work. Ensure that you can be home outside the time frame on the given day and you will be fine. Note that when scheduling on one day went beyond my ability to stay, he was extremely flexible in rescheduling. All in all an excellent job and education. I plan on using Handyman and Sons again in the future.
Description of Work: Removed and unused fan switch, replaced an existing light switch, replaced an outdoor lighting fixture, including upgrading the mounting. Finally, he also looked into the possibility of two future repairs stating why one was unlikely to be possible but that the second should be doable by this customer.

This provider talks more and works less. If any you want to hire him, just give him the list, show him in first 5 minutes and go away from him, and watch him from a distant place. That way, there would be less talk and more work, otherwise, you loose your money for the talk. Provider is of more Tlak and less work kind of person. Careful.

You hired us to install 6 GFCI receptacles, 2 light fixtures, trouble-shoot 2 different hot tubs that were not working, and finally, to trouble-shoot a garage light fixture too. You purchased a 129.00 deal for 2 hours of electrical and did not go over it. So I am not sure what you mean when you say we talked too much and that you lost money. Everything was done, on your list, and if anything, you seemed to really take a liking to my female apprentice. She talked to you, because you followed her in to every room asking questions, and she politely answered each one. I had heard a few of your questions, and I feel she answered every one of them well - especially the ones relating to the function and trouble-shooting of the wet bar GFCIs. She saved you money on the 3 in the kitchen, as she diagnosed them as functioning, and could not justify the time and money it would have taken to change them out. I assure you, she has never initiated casual conversation with any customer, and I was busy diagnosing, and fixing the trouble-shoots.

He asked lots of questions to help him determine the cause of the problem, of the breaker shutting off. He had suggested when I made the appointment, to get a new outside light in case that was the problem. The problem was the garage door opener setting. He fixed the problem very quickly by readjusting the arm. He had lots time left on the coupon, and no cost on parts. So I asked him to looked at a motion light that I wanted to stay on longer. The light was about 25 years old, and the timer would not change. He suggested I change the light, as it could stop working at any time due to its age and weather it was exposed to all those years. As the light was one of a pair, I had him change both lights. As the cost for a bolt, wire nuts and caulk was insignificant, he did not charge. He did bring a helper with him, to show the proper way to due electrical work, so he did not change for the few minutes over the two hours. My only cost was Angie's coupon for $129.00. As my way of thanks for a good job, My dead husband had left over electrical tape and nuts and etc., which I gave him for doing an great job in a timely manner. I am sure Angie's suppliers expect to make a little more than their coupon, and he could have found a way to pad the bill, But he did not! I found a very timely, precise, and he met all my expectation. I would use his firm again. e to ddC

Thank you for the nice review, it was your one garage light that was not working because of the old wiring in it. I'm glad you had the pair on hand, so we just simply installed them.

So sorry for the delay in posting the review - I've had to do some research before I finalized my review... We contracted with Handyman and Sons to do our electrical work through a special $129 for 2 hours of Electrical Labor deal. The amount of work we needed to do seemed would have been able to have been accomplished in the 2 hours we contracted for. instead - the project took over four hours to accomplish. Chris did absolutely fantastic work - I absolutely trust his work. But - he did his work unusually slow (I understand he was training an apprentice - but not sure I should be paying for that instruction). He did take off some time off the final bill - but even the four hours I was charged seemed unusually long. I've since had some additional electrical work done after Chris was at the house - and the licensed contractor I used completed more work than the installation of the ceiling fan wiring - in well over half the time it took Chris The fan switch Chris installed did not work when the fan was installed, and had to be replaced. The replacement switch (high quality) was actually substantially cheaper than what Chris had charged me for the switch he installed. When I asked about a refund for the defective switch - Chris told me he would give me a credit off of my next service bill. I think I will just eat that charge and call it a day... Bottom line: Chris - I love the work you did, but was not very fond of how long the work took or what you charged for your parts.

You hired us to run a new circuit to a ceiling fan that was not there before I came - including addition wires all the way down to your switch. While I was in your attic, I observed, and videotaped some wires that were simply run through your attic with no protection – meaning they were not in a race way, they were simply run through your attic. I believe this is the correcting work you refferred to as being done quicker. He may have run whats called romex (basicaly like a code approved extension cord). As I explained to you, though your code permits it, I feel it is an unsafe way to run a circuit, mostly, because you can cut into it with a nail or anything sharp exposing wires in your attic. These wires are subjected to horribly high ambient temperatures in the summer. Though the risks are small and the savings high, I said I never run that type of wiring. Conversely, I had to run a new raceway for your ceiling fan , And install the ceiling fan box. I do high-quality work, moreover, I do it according to the national electric code, and I do have a quality minimum that I require of myself. I'm not sure how you are qualified to rate two electric contractors work for time efficiency. Finally, I don't know what he did in your attic, but I assure you the money you spent was well worth the hours you paid for, and I always leave a job with a clear conscience, and the feeling that my customer recieved a high quality and SAFE job performance.

I paid for the deal that stated two hours of electrical work for $129. I received one email and I never received a call afterward even despite leaving at least 3 voice mails. I also sent two additional emails with no response at all. I'm actually glad they didn't come out, I can't imagine the quality of work if you can't return a simple phone call just to schedule a date. Their loss as I planned on having large electrical work to be done in the near future. Will be asking for my money back.

This is why I have Angie's List! Chris was very professional and gracious in helping me resolve my issue. I called him while he was at a job, so he politely told me that he would call me back in a few hours when the job was over. He did call back within a few hours and we discussed the problem regarding my garage. He mentioned that his schedule is pretty packed right now and that he wouldn't be able to make it out to my house anytime soon, HOWEVER he walked me through exactly what he would have done/checked had he came out. He was very patient and thorough with his explanations, with several reminders of "be sure the power is off when you do this" :) The call took about 10 minutes or so, never once did I feel like he was rushing me through the process. Because I wasn't at my house when we did the call, Chris even offered to store my number on his phone in case I needed him to walk me through the trouble-shoot when I got home. I ended up not needing Chris to walk me through the process again, things worked out fine and my garage now has power! Though I can't say whether what he told me was the main reason I have power now (I tried several things), I very much appreciate his genuine willingness to help me and to see the problem through until it was resolved. He didn't charge me a dime for any of this! He totally deserves his 2014 Super Service Award and totally has my vote for a 2015 one!
Description of Work: I called Chris requesting a service call to look at my garage, since it seemed like there was no electricity flowing through at all (neither the garage door or the lights would operate).

They couldn't find the electrical box in the basement so they tried many ways to find it, said they would have to remove the ceiling to fix the outlet. We had them do something else. 4 months later my husband decided to look at the outlet, found that the wires were cut and he rewired the outlet himself in 1 hour. Which makes me mad since my husband isn't an electrician.

The wiring for the disposal works fine. The only problem is that he had to install a double switch box, and only one switch, so there is a "fake" switch next to the real one. The cover is also crooked, since the "fake" side is empty and there is noting behind it to keep it flush with the wall. I've tried to straighten it out myself before painting over it. It works great, but I would have preferred a single switch box and cover, since there is only a single switch.. I had the interior closet switch installed because of the way it had been wired prior to my moving in - the switch was around the corner, and not practical for actually using the closet. This solved the problem perfectly. The second closet, for which I would have liked an interior light, was determined to have older wiring that would have required cutting through a wall to access existing wiring in the adjoining bathroom, in order to extend the wiring to the closet and make installation possible. He picked up a light from one of the stores nearby with the intention of coming back to do the work, but that appointment did not materialize. It may no longer be necessary, as I have decided to have the bath remodeled, and will likely have this project combined with the remodel.
Description of Work: The provider installed an outlet box under the sink and a wall switch to accommodate a disposal I was having installed. He also installed a wall switch inside a closet in the second bedroom, and looked at the linen closet that adjoins the bath, to determine whether it would be possible to install a light inside of it.

The interaction with Chris was unprofessional, at best. After setting an appointment one month from the date of payment - he cancelled during the window of time scheduled. When I contacted Angie's List about this situation - they contacted him and in turn, Chris left an abusive voicemail ranting about how I should not have called Angie's list. I returned the call after the voice mail and he told me that he had already started with a bad day, that I would only add to it, and that he wished my house would burn down because I had used another contractor for my kitchen. At that point, I elected to terminate the call. Use this firm at your own risk. Honestly, I am so concerned about his behavior, threats, and demeanor that I am likely going to report him to our local police since he has my home address - and seemed the type to be vindictive enough to cause my family harm.

First, understand, that the person who wrote this review is, and who I spoke with at every point of contact was the husband of this member. From the day I first spoke to him to schedule, he casually dropped the F bomb more than any inmate could possibly. But cautiously, I continued to make the appointment, upon the day of, within the two hour window, he had called me twice, he was extraordinarily abusive again, this time demanding - I show up at his house immediately. I never made any threatening statements at any time. Furthermore, I will be calling Angie's list on Monday, and stating my concerns about any contractor coming into this person's house – at their own peril, that clearly he will stop at nothing if he doesn't get exactly what he wants when he wants, and it will be far worse than any two-year-olds tantrum, because he clearly will manipulate the law in the situation. It's a shame there's people like this out there in the world, it truly is.

On October 14th, I purchased the $129.00 deal for 2 hours electrical labor offered by Handyman & Sons on Angie List. On the Angie List Web site, the company listed an address of Chicago,Illinois, and a work area description to include the ENTIRE AREA except Laporte, Lake and Porter counties. The same day I e-mailed the company to set up an appointment date. In the e-mail I gave them my exact address and phone number. On October 16th, the company sent an e-mail with my address in the heading stating I should be easy to work into their schedule. On October 23 I sent an e-mail asking if I could be scheduled for that upcoming week, but received no reply. On October 31 I sent another e-mail requesting an appointment for this week. The company responded in an ambiguous e-mail stating that they did no go South of North Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, they had to research Angie's List, and that there were other electricians that work the south side of Chicago. I e-mailed back them back stating I was aware that there were electricians that work the South side of Chicago, but I purchased the deal with the understanding from their work area description on Angie List that their company did also.. Because in the e-mail the company did not indicate clearly they would not honor the deal I asked them to respond if they intended to do so. I did not received a reply so I requested a refund from Angie's list. I

My sincere apologies, I did not see that you were [Removed Address]., I automatically assumed you were around Foster, on the north side. It has always clearly indicated on my certificate that I do not go south of North Avenue for various reasons, mostly parking tickets, and the lack of my 9 foot plus high track fitting into most of the garages. If Angies List is having difficulties producing a refund, please let me know and I will be happy to call them on your behalf – typically they're very prompt about doing so however.

I couldn't recommend this company highly enough. Very professional and experience level was evident. Only thing even remotely negative I can say is it's a little difficult to set up the appointment...just because it seems like they're beyond busy...but once contacted the appointment was made for much sooner than I anticipated. I needed three light fixtures mounted and wanted a general check up of the condition of the wiring due to some odd issues with the old fixtures. The previous homeowners watched way too many HGTV shows and must have dozed off at the important parts...I was a bit nervous about their "handywork". Not only did he fix the mess they made and get the new fixtures mounted, but he gave the wiring a clean bill of health...finished early, AND fixed a ceiling fan that had some odd part rubbing issue going on, since he had time left. Previous experience with some of the Angie's "deals" have been total bait and switch scenarios...where you pay one thing but then they show up and start tacking on charges...this was NOT that. It's nice to feel like you actually got a deal when a serviceman leaves your home.

I had dusk to dawn set for these fixtures but I had trouble with them..no fault of Chris the owner of Handyman.
