I in fact did apologize several times, and even explained one of several reasons why I could not come downtown. You confirmed the main reason why I cant come down when you told me your garage door in the hi-rise you reside was 7 foot high - as I already explained that most are. In and attempt to preserve my back and knees, I have upgraded to a 40,000 dollar high top van with a clearance of 8 foot six inches. It also enables me to stock well over 5000.00 dollars more of electrical product - saving my customers valuable clock time in Home depot trips. There are several more reasons - that I attempted to explain, you were very angry, as there was no resolve. Sorry again - I never like to turn away ANY buisness.

Sorry for the delayed response {removed member name}, as usual, Angies List continues to provide quality customers like yourself, it's up to 7 days a week now, but I still enjoy it completely. Im glad to hear your pleased with the work performed, and hope all continues to be well with your fish pond - that was quite an impressive set up.
Chris and I coordinated over the phone. I did have to call the day before because I did not get any confirmation call, but there was no need. He answered his phone every time I called, he was ready with the appointment, and he was on time and efficient. Chris finished on time, cleaned up carefully, andwas great about giving me extra information about lightbulb choices, hardware (screws) advice, and other knowledge. Super!

Thanks for the great review [member name removed], hope the LED works better in that unusually tall closet. I really appreciate the night before call advise, I have since DILIGENTLY re-implemented it. Though not an excuse, the 10pm late night finishes played a key role in its' demise. Though I have still never missed an appointment, communication is important to me as a consumer, certainly more - as a service provider. Thank you again.

It wasn't a great experience. I ended up paying over $210 to have a ceiling fan installed and 3 battery operated smoke detectors put in. They said they couldn't get remote control for the ceiling fan to work. They also checked to see if there was anything wrong with an electrical switch and said they would change it but it was never changed. I later had another ceiling fan put in with someone else and the remote for that one was installed without a hitch. Any of the problems he encountered, he blamed on the old house and old wiring. The gentleman was very nice, but I felt he was delaying the time of labor so he could charge me extra for his fee.

It’s a shame that you neglected to mention how I was attempting to install a USED ceiling fan – with a remote that was NOT of the same brand (both practices have since been halted for obvious reasons). Moreover, the 3 way dimmer switch you CLAIM I never changed has a receipt with Identifying numbers on it from my stock, so anytime your handyman would like, we can compare notes and FACTS. Further still, after you claimed you were going to purchase a new fan, and would call me back to install it, I trusted you, and delayed billing you for that free 45.00 3 way-dimmer, you claim was never installed (another practice I have since hated directly because there’s people like you out there). Finally, regarding the 3 floors of smoke detectors that I also installed, after informing you that I was not comfortable installing – because your previous handyman had installed one of the wires incorrectly, I did as a favor, because you claimed DCFS was coming the same day, and it would have obviously been an issue. The first ceiling fan was installed in the front bedroom well, and in good time – because it was new. There were several other electrical issues that I resolved for you as well, I'm sorry you felt undersold, but I categorically disagree.

Chris was very responsive and worked me into his busy schedule right away. I had 2 ceiling fans that had suddenly stopped working, but about 20 variables to look into for the cause. He was able to go beyond my visual inspection with a voltmeter and determine an improper ground as the cause. He also removed malfunctioning remote units from both fans. It's possible that a dedicated electrician may have been able to fit more work into the allotted time, but definitely not for the price. Chris was tough as nails crawling around in my 100+ degree attic as well. I'll definitely be requesting his services again in the future.

We hired Chris with the $349 and quot;electrician for the dayand quot; deal. He initially contacted us right away and while it took a little while to get schedule this was OK with us, and expected for these kind of prepaid deals. We gave him a list, in order of priority, of tasks to accomplish and told him that if we only got to the first couple on the list that would be fine, we wanted to stay within the rate we had already paid for. He did complete the first two items on that list satisfactorily. However, that was after first starting one of the low priority taks which eventually led to us losing the functionality of our entryway light. This lower priority task was correcting improperly set up three-way light switches controlling two lights, one in the entryway at the bottom of the stairs and one at the top of the stairs. The lights worked, but the three-way switches weren't set up correctly, so this was a low-priority repair. After working on this for an hour or two, he put it on hold and completed the two higher priority items. However, when he returned to these switches it was clear that this task was much bigger than could be completed in the time we had agreed upon. We asked him to please just put things back as they were found but this was apparently no longer a possibility. We tried to reiterate that we didn't want this work to be extended but we felt we needed to have these lights back in order. He stayed a couple hours late trying to figure out what all the wires were that were connected to these two light fixtures/switches. After taking several lights down and disassembling all the wires, he claimed that severely faulty wiring in the house made it impossible for him to reassemble it. Yes, it's a 100-year old house, but it was hard to swallow because clearly those lights had been functioning for several years (most likely decades) prior. We would like to give Chris the benefit of the doubt that it was indeed a safety issue. He is a nice guy overall. But we feel he should have immediately recognized the uncertainty of the task and not proceeded with it as per our instructions. Instead, we're left with something that's much worse than when he began. After telling us he'd be able to put things back together in and quot;days, not weeksand quot;, it took over SIX WEEKS to reach an ending point. He said he had scheduling conflicts indicating he is routinely taking on much more work than he has time to complete. Let this be a lesson to Angie's List customers about buying prepaid deals from this man or ANY vendor without first confirming that they have room in their schedule to complete the work. And what is that ending point exactly? Well, a light that worked perfectly well has now been permanently removed. He claimed it could not be put back together at all, so he put a cap over it, closed up the ceiling and the switches, and left. We now have no ceiling light in the entryway of our house. We were charged $200 for the additional labor (at a discounted rate) to restore the light upstairs on a properly functioning three-way switch. And we will still need to get a second opinion on how to restore functionaly to the entryway light fixture. I think Chris is well suited to other forms of electrical work, but would NOT recommend hiring him for anything that involves exposing the ancient wiring of a 100-year-old house. I have read other reviews that indicate very similar outcomes for other customers under similar circumstances. This is not his strong suit. I would also recommend against buying prepaid Angie's List deals from any vendor. Many customers report similarly negative experiences with these prepaid deals. Ultimately it'll cost you more money than just negotiating a price for services.

Please understand that I am in contact with no less then 20 people a day, or their vendors. I spend an extraordinary amount of my own time being thorough - ordering replacement parts, in attempt to save my customers money. This takes time, I also answer simple home owner questions through the day, resulting in further loss of revenue, because, after answering their questions, THEY DON'T need my services - I do my very best to respond quickly, and apologize for any inconvenience you suffered. I also perform ALL of my own electrical work, this too, takes time. I said SOME electricians would rewire the device using a ground as a neutral - I WILL NOT, and this angered you. I recommended a CARPENTER to open the wall and do the electrical correct, you said " we just had everything done" When I arrived ON A SUNDAY evening, you actually added more to the agreed amount of work. I installed the first USED ceiling fan - that was missing several key parts, which I supplied off the truck stock - at no extra cost - as they were small - BUT essential to the install. I also reinstalled a Halogen Ceiling - 3 piece fixture in your kitchen. When I began to install the second ceiling fan, I pulled the old one off, began to check the wiring for safety, and determined that the handyman you said you hired, used the ground as a neutral wire. You seemed very agitated, and said that the handyman claimed to have done everything correct. You were so sure the new light and fan would work, because the last one did. I tried to explain that while you can use the ground as a neutral - its DANGEROUS. While I rarely use that word, in this case - its applicable. Long before Angies list, I enjoyed - as I still do, a 95% positive reference base, on word of mouth alone. I have never had to use my insurance, and did not intend to risk that now.The neutral is a current carrying conductor. If you have current flowing on the grounding (bare) conductor, then anything attached to that (for instance any metal) will also become current carrying. If you were to then touch that metal while standing on a grounded surface, you now become part of the conductor and will receive a shock, perhaps a fatal one. I hope the next person also has a conscience,

Hello [Member Name Removed], I sincerely do not appreciate your negative review of my company based solely on my inability to accommodate your NON EMERGENCY request for immediate service. I value each customer and do NOT bump previously scheduled appointments. I do my best to accommodate urgent matters on a case by case basis. I responded to your request promptly. I believe I was very courteous when we spoke and I informed you of my schedule. I also reminded you that Angie's list would promptly refund your money and they have. Having said that, I am sorry you had a negative experience. I did attempt to prevent that from happening by suggesting that you get a refund and look for another vendor rather then overbooking and rescheduling you. There by continuing to delay your service. I am a licensed and insured electrician who deals honestly with all my customers. This time of year is our busiest season. I treated you as I do all my customers with an honest assessment of my ability to meet you needs. Regretfully that displeased you. Chris

I used Handyman and Sons based on the high ratings found on Angie's List and I could not be more impressed with this company. Chris and his assistant, John, are extremely professional, courteous and diligent about doing the work the way it should be done. They won't cut corners on anything. Chris found that installation was not quite done correctly on one of the burned out fans he was replacing and he took a lot of additional time to get it right when installing the replacement. He explained everything, thanked me for my business, and they both cleaned up before they left. In addition to all of this, I found their prices to be very reasonable. I bought the fans from one of the big box stores and they said they would give me a deal for installation - a 30% reduction on the second and third fans, for a total of $300. No thanks, I saved $75 by using the deal Handyman and Sons was offering. It's really refreshing to find old school tradespeople that you can trust to do excellent work and not rip you off. I HIGHLY recommend Handyman and Sons and will be using them in the future when I move and need new fans installed.

Chris did 3 hours of work for me that ended up costing me more money having another electrician put my wiring back as it had been when Chris arrived, and took me most of a day to repair the drywall. He was friendly and polite while in my home, and I can't say for certain whether what he said about my electrical wiring was said in good faith or not, but I do think that he raised alarms unnecessarily, indicating my wiring was wrong when in fact it was probably fine. Also, the conversations we had on the phone afterwards upset him, and the way he expressed himself at that time I found to be extreme and frightening. I hired Chris to move a light fixture over a couple of feet, back to a box where it had been before, and to tell me whether a surge I had seen was okay or meant something bad about the wiring. He spent 3 hours mostly ‘ringing out’ wires as he termed it, to understand what went where, and what was live and what was not. He also said that he thought it would be helpful to cut the drywall. While that made it easy to physically move the two wires from the old box to the new one, and I did authorize him to cut the drywall, I think that it was probably not actually necessary, and the large size of the hole he cut was definitely unnecessary. He removed the unwanted box and bx cable. When Chris arrived, all the lights and outlets in my living room were operational. When he left none were operational, because he had found 120 volts coming out of one of the white (supposed to be neutral) wires and he said he did not feel it was safe to connect the wires up again as they had been when he arrived. He offered to call my former electrician and I gave him the number. He said he would follow up very soon. In conversation, he had also learned that I have had a lot of experiences where I was not happy with contractors over the past year and a half. Also, while at my home, Chris mentioned how dangerous a lot of things were (for example, saying I should close the door of the electric box when flipping circuits on and off, to protect against an explosion that could disfigure me, and he showed me at one point how when the shop vac turned on, the lights also turned on. That had not been happening when he arrived, and this may have been an honest discovery on his part of something that seemed strange to him, but it made me wonder whether he might be trying to scare me so I would believe my wiring was incorrect and pay lots of money for him to research it. I was very nervous when Chris left, because in addition to having no working lights or outlets in my kitchen and living room, I now was afraid that something might be fundamentally wrong with my wiring, and it might require a great deal of time and money to fix. I decided to get a second opinion. The man I hired for the second opinion had been in the business around 20 years. He took around an hour and a half to separate out all the wires and reconnect them. He was initially concerned to find 220V coming out at one place, but when he reconnected the wires he said the potentials all dropped to 120V where they should be, and when I asked whether I should be concerned about the higher voltage he had observed, he said no, it was fine, that sometimes when everything is disconnected resistance doesn’t kick in but then once you put the wire under load it begins to resist and he said that it did not mean that the system was wired wrong. I was a bit frustrated then because Chris had spent 3 hours and left me feeling very afraid and with no lights, seemingly unnecessarily. I phoned and told him that I felt I had not received value for the money paid and requested that he refund some or all of the money I had paid him. An argument ensued. He disagreed and seemed to become more and more angry as I continued to disagree with him. He said that since I did not know anything about electrical work I was not qualified to make a judgment as to the effectiveness of his work. While it's true that I'm not qualified to judge electrical knowledge, I have no reason to disbelieve the electrician who gave the second opinion. Given that opinion, I believe that the path Chris was going down in terms of analyzing the situation was not correct. I told him that he could do whatever he wanted to do, he did not have to give me money back, and his review would simply reflect whatever he did. I assured him that the review would be accurate - I would not lie, but would simply provide an accurate account. The threat of a bad review was very upsetting to Chris. At first, Chris said he would refund two of the three hours, and we got off of the phone. But then he called me back and said he was going to phone every contractor I had ever worked with, and I had better be careful what I said in a review because he would call his lawyer and would bring me to court for anything I said that I could be brought to court for. He said he was also going to call Angie’s List and tell them it was him or me, that they should kick me out as a member because surely they wouldn’t want a customer who had positive things to say about only a very small proportion of the contractors who worked for her. I felt bullied. I probably would not have bothered to post a review at all if I had not received this last phone call, but my response when I feel bullied is generally to want to make sure that the bullying is not effective. In retrospect after my temper has cooled, I can see why Chris might have been upset - if he indeed acted in good faith, as he may have done, then he may have felt that I had bullied him first by asking for a refund and threatening to write a review. He may have felt that it was unfair that he, with all the effort he puts into his work, had run into the one customer who would not approve of it and might seriously hurt his livelihood for reasons that seemed arbitrary and unjustified to him. However, even if all of that were true, I don't think that the way he expressed himself was called for. I felt that the money I had paid him had not been well spent and in fact had set me back rather than moving me forwards in my project, and that I should have some recourse in that situation. I am very disturbed by what I find to be a serious lack of accountability for results across the majority of construction firms I have worked with, and Chris telling me repeatedly that because I wasn’t an expert in electrical work I was not justified in trying to judge the effectiveness of his work was very frustrating to me, as I have found many, many instances where contractors have done sub-par work, so I find that it is essential that I as a customer always review the quality of that work. I did not threaten to cancel my check to Chris, though I could certainly have done so. If he disagreed he could simply have said that he disagreed, refused to refund my money, and put forth a response that he saw as accurate to the any review that I might post. His threat to call every contractor I had ever worked with and call Angie’s List to get me kicked out and come after me with legal action if I gave him any opening to do so seemed like an overly extreme response to me, and I found it somewhat frightening. So it’s of course up to the reader to judge what that means for you. Chris was friendly and courteous on the job site, and he may very well have acted in good faith there. His rates were significantly lower than those of any other electrician I could find. The other electrician's opinion makes me strongly question the judgment Chris made on the job site, but I can't say with certainty that he was right or wrong.. I certainly felt bullied by Chris's response when I requested a refund and said I would write an accurate review. I strongly regret having hired Chris, and certainly would not consider hiring him again. I do not believe that his visit was of any ultimate benefit to me, but rather set me back in my project and upset me.

Ms. [member name removed], First, I'm truly glad that you, your wiring, and your home are safe. I will begin by pointing out that you were added to an already full schedule, and, that I in fact, completed the job you hired me to do. Your call was deemed an emergency, because you reported that while attempting your own wiring, you blew a surge protector, a dimmer, and subsequently – a breaker. You further reported that upon energizing the circuit, some things went back on while others remained off? I explained my time limitation, and left your house at 7pm, finishing my last SCHEDULED customer at 10pm. It is important to note that I : 1) cut a neat hole in your ceiling, moved and consolidated an existing box some distance away, and its’ wires, on my suggestion – saving you a metal plate in the ceiling 2) removed two dimmer switches, and began to figure out what you did with all the wires that were crossed and not connected correctly in the original box, and, had to match others to the double dimmer box too 3) began the process of grouping and separating many wires – in preparation for the new light installation – SAFELY. 4)I left your home safe, as ANY homeowner would appreciate and in fact, expect a good tradesman to do, I agreed to return to complete the job the next day. Again, reminding you of my previous commitments. Less then 24hours later, you contacted another electrician (the 6th by your own count in your 18 month project), Stating you were nervous, and that you might be facing a costly job. I NEVER indicated you might have to pay more money or have additional repair work done. This next electrician did the same thing I would have done – if given the opportunity. He was able to do this because I had left the wires clearly separated and grouped. My advice about closing the panel door on your hand is advice I often give – ask a breaker manufacture, But, first, re-create your scenario. I strongly felt that you of all people – needed that advice, and had nothing but sincere concern attached. You had created the perfect electrical condition –that though rare, can result in a breaker to be dangerous. I believe your response to the advice speaks volumes - of your own state of mind. I really must emphasis that at NO POINT did I indicate there would be ANY additional costs. I left your home safe. I stand by my decision not to reconnect the wires in a rush. I practice safety before speed, and your kitchen lights were ON, and shed plenty of foot-candle on your adjacent living room. Finally, your repeated use of the word bullied is offensive. By definition - to bully is to use ones strength or influence to intimidate or force another person to do your will. That is precisely what YOU did. You made sure I was aware that you had one of your recent electrical contractors in court via the Attorney Generals office. I did not know it was a bluff, until I spoke with a supervisor at Madigan’s office, as far as I know – we only have one. You informed me, quite smugly, without any request for such information, about additional contractors you have had reviewed negatively and how you handled it. I believe there were at least 9 at YOUR count. I have since learned that you have used this tactic in the past to attempt to get money back on services that cannot possibly be un-rendered. You were abusive and profane in our last conversation. Repeatedly using the F** bomb, which I could have terminated the conversation after, but chose to press on. I find it amusing that you describe my response as “extreme and frightening” when just the opposite is true. At no point during our conversation was I anything but professional with you. What you called an extreme response was my opinion, that using Angie’s list as a tool to squeeze contractors was immoral. Additionally, if you attempted this with my company, and you were not careful in your wording, I would take legal action, as I work very hard to preserve my company’s integrity. I have personally spoken to your most recent electricians office, and that is where I suggest you have a pattern. Though I'm sure there are a few bad apples in the world, we were not in that basket. Finally, I could not agree more. People should be accountable for their actions. Your action of attempting your own wiring caused you to require the services of yet another electrician. Those services cost you $129. Those services were completed in good faith.

Chris arrived 5 minutes early and was very friendly. He explained a few potential options for us and was diligent about his work. He finished in a timely manner and was very reasonably priced. We will definitely use him again.
Description of Work: The outlet in our bathroom kept popping and blowing a fuse. Chris came and checked everything from the electrical box to the internal wiring. Replaced a part and it has been working great ever since.

Excellent job. He showed up on time and performed a good job. There was a misunderstanding about the timing of the appointment on my part but Chris clarified the confusion and took care of the job.

It went fine. The provider was on time and able to provide the kitchen design the same day, as promised. It was very helpful to have and well worth the money.
Description of Work: The provider came to my house to take measurements of my kitchen and then provided me with a kitchen design. I was able to use the kitchen design to help order new kitchen cabinets and countertops.

Bad experience from the start. Poor communication. No reply after I left two messages. Then, I called again and he answered and scheduled a visit. No show and no cancellation. Do not want to deal with him again.

They are not available in the time frame I needed, so I'm having a friend help me out instead. They were very nice and helpful over the phone. If my friend weren't available I would be calling them back.
