With over 20 years of experience in the industry, Promax Construction has the tools to knock out any job for your home or business. We have honed are craft through years of experience and know how to get the job done right. We believe in offering great value to our customers without comprising the quality of the craftsmanship or materials. We cut costs by purchasing wholesale and developing long term relationships with our staff. We are comfortable guaranteeing all of our work. Promax Construction is fully licensed and bonded. Meaning, the customer is always protected under our coverage. When you hire Promax, rest assured the job will be done right with no head-aches. In a tough economy, many homeowners are choosing to save money by hiring independent contractors without the proper licensing and insurance. We do not recommend this practice. Not only do homeowners have no guarantee the job will be done right, they are liable if someone gets hurt on the job. Another example we notice frequently is when a homeowner hires a roofer on the side to repair a roof. 5 years later the shingles are falling off the roof. A quality roof job should last up to 50 years. The homeowner tries to call up the roofer to fix his work and the roofer is out of business, left town, or refuses to honor the guarantee. Save yourself hassle and money by getting the job done right the first time.

The service I received from Promax Construction was absolutely FANTASTIC! I had a rotted fascia board on the south side of the house that was in dire need of repair and Promax was the only company that I could find in Decatur who were actually willing to come out and get the job done. After calling to set up an appointment, John showed up exactly when scheduled, gave me an estimate and I agreed to it on the spot. His price was fair, so I signed the contract and he said he'd send out his guys as soon as he could. The Promax crew showed up roughly two weeks later and immediately got to work. The first crew of guys (sorry I didn't catch their names or I'd credit them here) pulled down the old board and cut and installed the new piece perfectly. It was exactly what I wanted. After that, John had Shane come out to do some finishing work on the roof and chimney and now everything looks fantastic! I am extremely GRATEFUL to Promax Construction for doing this job for me when nobody else would and the next time I need more work done on the house, I will definitely be calling Promax Construction FIRST. Thanks again to John, Shane and everyone else who helped with this project. I truly appreciate it!

The work was conducted in two stages: first the roof then the gutters (my impression is that the gutters were done by another company that contracts with Promax). Had there not been a rain day, I think my old roof would have been torn off and the new roof put on in two days. They ran into problems when it came to the roof over my enclosed back porch. The expectation was that they would install rubber roofing because of the very slight angle on that part of the roof. However, when they took off the old roofing and the underlayment, they found another level of roofing and underlayment (and apparently the entire thing was at risk of collapsing into the back porch). So they rebuilt that part of the roof such that it has a sharp enough angle that regular roof shingles could be used. I approve of what they did to that part of the roof, but I do not approve of how it was handled. I was not told in advance that the extra work was to be done, and when the foreman (?) drew me aside and pointed out the extra work, he indicated the bill would be higher than the original estimate (but not how much). In other words, Promax did work to my house that increased the cost of their work without notifying me in advance. I have NO complaints about the work done. But I am unhappy with how said work, as it was being done, was communicated to me. The additional $500 that Promax billed me after the fact had been set aside for other work to be done on the house.

Response from Promax Construction
We have reviewed the customers response and are disappointed she was not satisfied with the work. We recognize that we did not do the best job communicating the amount for additional work to the customer. I will say that it is common in the roofing industry for additional charges to incur after the existing roof is demoed because problems with roof decks and frames are not evident until the existing roof is removed. Once the issues are evident, the homeowner's home is exposed to weather and our roofers have to work quickly to resolve the problem and unfortunately the homeowner is put is this position where they feel they are forced to pay added charges without much say in the matter. Even if she didn't want Promax to complete the additional work it might take her at least a week or more to get another roofing crew to resolve this issue. The additional $500 we charged her was discounted significantly from the price we normally charge for rebuilding a roof over a porch. I can say if she bidded this service out to another qualified roofing contractor she would appreciate the fact that we only charged $500 for this service and resolved the issue as quickly as we did. While we admit we our at fault for not directly communicating the added charges, we hope prospective customers can understand the reasoning for our quick resolution on this matter.

There were some mistakes made, but Eric the lead roofer came back a couple of times and corrected. Overall, we are very satisfied and would recommend Pro-Max.

The plumbing work was quick, just required cleaning out the crud built up in the hot water pipes near the faucet. The cutter work took longer because they had to order the cutter guards. The windows took the longest, about a week and a half. We had 16 windows that needed to be replaced. They were originals and in very bad shape. The wood around them were in bad shape also. They took out all the old windows, replaced them with new double pane window, replaced bad wood as needed, wrapped the outside in vinyl, painted the inside of the windows, and did a great clean up job when they were finished. Two of our window had air conditioners in them. They boxed the AC units above the windows and now the windows are free of obstruction. One of the windows to be used with the AC box came to large. The guys made the window hole bigger and it worked out really well. It looks great. They went above and beyond. The only reason the 'B' rating was given had to do with the workers being about 30 mins. late on a couple of occasions.
Description of Work: We contracted with Promax to have our gutters repaired, some plumbing work done, and new windows installed. We have had Promax before and were very please, overall with the work done. So, when we need major repairs we called Promax. The workers were very professional and did above quality work. The plumbing work was done by King Lar. They did the best they could but it would have taken more money then we had to put on plumbing. The guys who did the gutter work replaced the front, clean them all, and put gutter guards on all.

Promax Construction did an excellent job with our roof and gutter addition to our house! John came to our house and personally worked on keeping the price within our price range. We wanted and needed the work done quickly due to flooding in our basement from lack of gutters, and the Promax team worked quickly. Within one week we had a new roof and gutters exact to our specifications. They were efficient, cleaned up after themselves, and we would absolutely call them again for any other home improvement project. We highly recommend Promax and thank them for their great work!

Fast talking salesman. Vague costs that later jump dramatically. We discussed repairs to the wood below doors but later he only included portions of what we agreed on. Then the same repairs quoted earlier magically cost $4500 because the house had to be jacked up. They started the repairs at 9:30 and were done by 2:30 the same day. They didn't jack up the house at all and the wood cost less than $50. The main portion of the work took twice as long as scheduled. There is still some finish work not completed year later. Don't pay the final amount until after ALL the work is done. Even if it is the week before Christmas. They will not come back. They didn't wrap the house before putting on the siding so we still have drafts. In some areas it is worse. At least the old painted siding was sealed. The front storm is so cheap that snow came through the frame. Not around the door.... through the joints of the door. I had the gutters done so it would drain correctly, yet they reinstalled it exactly how it was when I told them I wanted it fixed. My roof started leaking after the work was done. It shorted out the lights on the porch. He recommended that I hire him to replace the roof.

Initial contact was made with John Schilawski (owner/salesman) to get a bid. He was a good salesman and seemed to offer a great service. The first disappointment was when asked if Promax had their own crews or subcontracted. We were told they had their own crews, but both jobs, roof replacement and gutter replacement, were done by separate contractors (which is why we put "No" on the question "Were services performed by the provider?"). We felt lied to, but let it go. As it turned out, those contractors were amazing, and did a fantastic job. We will be reviewing them separately. We had also been told that John would show up at the beginning, middle, and end of the job to check on progress and collect checks. He appeared on the first day before work had even begun (the crew was setting up) and collected the first check. Later that day the dumpster arrived, and the driver drove across wet ground rather than staying on the driveway. Considerable ruts were made which needed filled. After speaking to the crew boss (again, a different company), it was agreed that we should wait until later in the week and speak to John when he arrived. He never showed up. We didn't hear from him again until he called, two weeks later, to inform us that the gutter crew would arrive. We naively assumed John would show up that day. The crew did a great job, but we never saw John. John called the last evening to ask about the job. I told him that we were happy with the work done, but unhappy about the ruts and another minor issue. He informed us that someone would be stopping by to collect both final checks. We stated that we would be happy to give him one check, but were concerned about giving the final check in full until the damage was repaired. He flew into a rage, accused us of trying to get out of paying at all, and refused to even listen to our concerns. He went so far as to indicate that if we did not pay in full immediately, the crews would not be paid. Our understanding was that Promax would cover any damage that was caused, and in fact has insurance to do so. Had we been given the chance, we would have been more than willing to come to some sort of agreement, but the hostility we received prevented that. We did pay in full only because we were not willing to short-change the crews that did such fantastic work. We heard from Promax (NOT John) a week or two after final payment was made and were told that they would have topsoil brought in, but not until spring, "because nothing would grow until then, anyway." We highly doubt we will ever hear from them again and will have to incur the cost of having topsoil brought in ourselves, but will update this review if they follow through. The only reason Promax rated a D instead of an F is because we now know of two excellent companies for construction/repair work which we will use and recommend in the future. UPDATE: 2/10/14 High winds took several of the brand new shingles off the roof on 1/26/14. Not unexpected, as they were installed in cold weather and have not had sufficient warmth to seal properly. Contacted Promax on 1/29/14, still waiting for repairs to be made. Just read response from Promax: The roof was complete when contact was made about the ruts because we were waiting for the promised contact from John, which didn't occur when we were led to believe. It is very common for some portion (typically 10%) of payment to be withheld until ALL work is completed satisfactorily, including repairs for damage that occurred during construction. The dumpster in question was NOT put on the ground, but on the driveway, per our request. For whatever reason, the driver who delivered it opted to drive across the lawn (NOT per our request) rather than up the driveway to the designated spot. The owner did NOT say he would "hire his crew." He was asked specifically if Promax has a crew of their own or if they hired subcontractors. He said it was his own crew. That was NOT the case, and we were told by Mr. Harris himself that he owns his own company but works for Promax. Whether small contractors carry insurance, have cashflow, etc, is irrelevant to what we were told. Period. On a better note, John called me today to apologize for his behavior over the phone. He seemed very remorseful and his apology was accepted. UPDATE: 3/22/14 The roof repairs were made in early March, and the ruts were repaired on March 20. Both jobs were completed by subcontractors and done very well. The landscaper hired by Promax did an exceptionally good job, filling the ruts and compacting the soil. They also seeded the dirt they placed. On 3/21/14 John called to make sure all the work was done to our satisfaction. We told him that it was, and that we are quite pleased with the work that was done to repair the roof as well as the lawn. He again apologized profusely for his behavior during our phone call, and his apology was accepted. Hopefully it was a one-time thing. We all have bad days. I have raised "Professionalism" and "Responsiveness" ratings from F to D, and overall rating from D to C. While we can forgive what occurred, we can not forget.

Response from Promax Construction
On behalf of Promax Construction, we regret to hear that the [member name removed] are not satisfied with the service. We wanted to take the opportunity to remind the client and any readers that Promax guarantees all work and is committed to customer satisfaction. We have been around for over 10 years and are here to stay. While we understand the clients concerns, we want to make sure the public is aware of the companies point of view. The client contacted us after the roof was complete about the ruts in the ground left from the dumpster company picking up the dumpster. The company made a significant investment repairing their roof and needed compensation to cover our costs. The owner was under the impression that the client was withholding payment even after we told her we would fix the top soil on two occasions. The reason there were ruts in the ground was because the dumpster was placed in the lawn at the clients request. These ruts were unavoidable. Because the ruts were created in the winter and the ground was frozen, adding any topsoil would not hold. The proper remedy is to replace the top soil when the ground thaws. We have a service call scheduled to replace the top soil in the spring. The owner did not feel ruts in the lawn were justification for withholding payment on a satisfactorily completed roof. We have made multiple attempts to reassure the customer we will remedy the topsoil problem. As far as the employee/subcontractor issue, the owner said he would hire his crew to complete the job. The workers who completed the job complete hundreds of jobs for Promax. They are subcontractors for tax and insurance purposes only. These subcontractors many times do not carry insurance, do not guarantee their work, and do not have the cashflow to finance large construction jobs that do not pay until the contract is complete. In the contract construction industry, many consumers attempt to save money by hiring the crews of general contractors. They do so at their own risk. Risks include contractor without insurance damaging the property or suing the homeowner after he is injured, contractor unable to complete job because he can not finance the materials, contractor not bonded and does not finish contract, poor craftsmanship, contractor leaves town or goes out of business after he guarantees his work. Insurance is a large expense in the construction injury, which General Contracting companies offer as part of a service.

We had a great feeling from the moment we met John during our consultation and, even though Promax was a little more expensive then our other options, we chose Promax because John was just as excited about the project as us and we knew we would get great quality. The original estimate for completion was three weeks, but it took two weeks and two days. The last two days were only needed due to a design decision delay on my end. If I had made a decision earlier, I feel confident all of the work would have been completed in 2 weeks. Promax does most of the work themselves, but they do sub-contract for some of their services. Geno was in charge of our project and he did an excellent job communicating when people would be here and any changes/updates that needed to occur. Every single person who came to our house was friendly and professional. Everyone cleaned up after themselves and they dealt really well with our two cats and our two small children, who were here for the last two days of work. Promax is not necessarily the least expensive option, but I believe that you get what you pay for and the quality of work that we have is amazing. We get so many great comments on everything that has been done and we have a lot of people ask us for contact information. I am hard pressed to find one piece of the renovation that is my favorite, but the 7 foot wide barn door that Promax built and installed is truly stunning and quite the masterpiece of our basement. I would most definitely recommend Promax to anyone who needs renovations done and when we plan any work in the future, I know exactly who we will call first.

Upon reading the complaint, we contacted the customer and explained the reasons for the additional charges. In the original bid, the customer agreed to pay for all material from a legitimate third party vendor. There was an estimated material expense budget of $3000. However, the requested additional fixtures that cost over $3000. During the construction process, the customer agreed to expand the dry wall job to include the entire bathroom. The additional fixtures requested by the customer required an extensive amount of electrical work, installation of outlets and light switches. The company apologized for the miscommunication and agreed to cover the labor cost of installing an interior door. The customer was satisfied and the company considers this issue resolved. Customer that are not satisfied are always encouraged to contact the company directly to work out a speedy resolution.

We hired ProMax to replace our kitchen floors, install new countertops, move a light fixture and hang bifold closet doors. The workers that showed up were incompetent. At one point they had to call a "friend" to come and do the electrical for them. They damaged multiple pieces of flooring and then requested we go buy more. They hung the closet doors incorrectly and put the knobs in the wrong place. We had to ask them to leave as they were doing more damage than good. They didn't even start on the countertops. We ended up having to hire another company to repair what had been done and finish the job. We were given a hand-written estimate on a piece of paper. When we contacted the owner to tell him we were not satisfied, he offered to send more people in to fix what had been done. After questioning, these "new people" were just more sub-contractors that do odd jobs for him. When I requested money back for the work that had not been done properly and the work that still needed completed, he refused.

The owners and staff of Promax Construction strive to maintain customer satisfaction and our disappointed that they were not offered the opportunity to resolve this dispute. As the customer stated in her complaint, she would not allow Promax the chance to send additional help to resolve the issues with the remodel. The additional help included one of the companies senior carpenters who has satisfactorily completed hundreds of residential and commercial jobs. Promax respectfully refutes the claim that they were sending "just more subcontractors that do odd jobs." It is also important to note there were complications at the job-site that were beyond the companies control. To cut costs, the customer opted to purchase the materials herself. Normally, the cost of material is included in the contract and the company would never request the customer to purchase more material. It is normal for some material to be damaged during a professional construction process. Because the customer agreed to be responsible for purchasing material, the carpenters requested she purchase more when it was needed. Regardless of whether the company or the customer was at fault, Promax made every attempt to rectify the situation. The customer refused to let the company finish the job. As a show of good faith, Promax nullified their contract with the customer when many construction companies may have sought litigation to collect the remaining balance. Unfortunately, Promax was unable to refund the deposit as it had already been spent on the work that had been completed.

For all that was done to the house, things went really well. There were several different areas of construction involved, from the concrete workers, construction workers, painters and drywallers. Everyone worked together and completed the job. Had a few minor touch ups that had to be made but everything was addressed and taken care of. The house has been totally transformed, the front porch which was originally about 4 foot by 5 foot in size is now 8 ft wide by 32 foot long. The windows in the front of the house went from 7 windows to 2 windows and all interior work that had to be done becasue of this was done professionally. There have been so many compliments from people walking and driving by in the neighborhood becasue of the change made to the house and how nice it looked. We are looking forward to many years of enjoyment. Thanks PRO MAX
Description of Work: We took on a major exterioir project in 2012 which consisted of replacing the roof, siding, replacing all windows including some major modifications, a replacement shed, and a new front porch. Spoke with the owner of Pro Max several times before deciding on doing the work and was comfortable with his estimates. During the process of the work, some recommendations were made on the work that only increased the price of the original estimate by just a little bit due to more wood needing replaced on the house itself. There were also some recommendations made on doing other changes like pitching a roof on a breezeway that was origninally flat which did not change the price at all. They also put in new lighting as well on the outside. Everything was within reason.

My house needed a new roof so I called a couple roofers in town for estimates. After getting a couple estimates I called Promax. The salesman, John, was a little late for the estimate but he was very friendly and helpful. He agreed to match my lowest bid and promised to do a thorough clean-up job and even offered to trim some of my bushes. John gave me a contract to sign the same day and two days later the roofers showed up at 8am and began working. The roofers worked very hard and long days in the sun to make sure they meant the deadline John and I agreed on. After they were done, John came for an inspection and everything looked good.

John came to the jobsite and provided a price the same day I called for an estimate. The price was comparable with the other estimate I had received. The installers showed up and completed the job the next day without any issues. I would highly recommend Promax for guttering installation.
Description of Work: Promax installed 6" aluminum guttering and downspouts on my new construction residence.

The carpenter who created the stairway did a beautiful job but it was built too close to the wall to drywall that side of the basement in remodel. I specifically requested they leave space and they did not. One contractor they sent to do electrical was drunk! He broke one of the lighting globes. He asked for money up front to buy electrical supplies and took them with him when I finally threw him out of the house! Upstairs, they did not refinish the drywall where the old bedroom walls were removed. The ceiling swirls were not properly repaired and you can see where the room was. The main floor is all hardwood and they refused to refinish it to blend in because they said they would have to redo the entire floor and had already spent too much time on this job and were over budget. To top it off, they left the old bedroom ceiling fixture open with the wiring hanging down in my new upstairs great room. When signing the contract with this company, they promised that it would look as if there had never been a bedroom there.
Description of Work: Upstairs bedroom eliminated and wood bannister stairway added to connect basement for remodel.

Response from Promax Construction
Promax Construction guarantees all work and the response of the contractors based on the facts presented by this client do not represent the standard of customer service we expect of our staff. The contractors who worked on this job no longer work for Promax and the company has restructured it's ownership. Promax guarantees all work.
