A complete joke of a company. They tried charging me almost 1000 bucks to install two pieces of used lumber using my ladder because they weren't prepared for the job. They were severely underquoted the project to get the bid then changed to a time and materials. I accepted with the intent they would be prepared for the job. They informed they would be there at 8 am showed up late. Everyone was one the phone while "on the clock." There clock started when they started work in the morning. No materials at jobsite the day of. No plans of the repair other than a brief discussion. After I kicked them out of the job . The carpenter at least calls back asking to pick up his things. Meanwhile the estimator trespassed without even calling to take their things (which I would have allowed if they at least called). Has the audacity to take pictures of the work they didn't do and try to charge me for it. A complete joke that further cements their lack of preparedness and communication towards the job

Mr. [Member Name Removed], While your experience was not what either of us were looking for it was not our intention for you to feel that the time on the job was not productive. The miscommunication and lack of explanation on how time and material projects work was the responsibility of J.J. Swartz Co. for that we apologize. We tried to contact you in regards to getting the material picked up that had been delivered so there would not be a charge for material after you cancelled the project. We have voided the invoice sent for time work on the job and time in planning. Again we wish things would have been different but wish you the best in getting your work completed.
well fist off they screwed me over by changing the contract that was agreed on through emails, when drove 40 mins to signed contract i was told it was the same one agreed on in the emails when i handed them a 10,000.00 check as down payment as required to start job, but later when going over emails they changed it in scope of work when i tired to back out saleman told me that money i put down would be surrendered if i didn't use them,so work began an 2 weeks into it they flooded my house for the first of three times,an not once offering to help clean up messes, as work come closer to completetion they hired subs to do work(subs were drunks an drank the whole time in my house) i contacted them about it an nothing ws done the drunks contiuned to work, then i paid 6700.00 for an electrical upgrade, they wouldn't finish what i paid for ,so contacted the city of sprinfield an they made them finish(they left a live meter box sticking through my new kitchen floor for over 5 weeks)so electrical got done an more damage to other wires in my house as it was completed( AT&T an dish lines) then when it rained i got my new inside finished walls in 3 places got damaged from water from poor craftsmen ship,an all along i was calling an complaining about what was going on an the owner blew me off an i couldn't get a call back from the salesmen, then we notice a bunch of cracks had appeared along the way as they did the construction in our drive way along with it sinking allowing yet more water in the basement once again i called an talked to owner an he stated they didn't do the damage so i took pictures an sent them to him VIA email,he sent me back pics they took pre construction an they didn't show any of these large cracks an sinking driveway, but he still insited they didn't damage the driveway, after haven to threaten to take them to court, then they decided to fix the damage they caused, during the finishing time on my end me an my spouse both got electocuded from wiring that there electrician left breakers on in panel, but told use all wires installed by them that breakers were off, another LIE , i had to go to emergency room from the electrocusion, an when i called the owner again,i was told it was my fault that i purposely turned breakers on,really i been working with eletricity for over 25yrs why would i energize a circuit an then work on it, then J J swartz made me pay for the emergency room bills, when project was completed, they wanted paid so i proceeded to cut them a check for $43,000.00 lke agreed on an they came up with $16,000.00 worht of extras that were NOT in the contact or any other type of agreement,I questioned all these extra chrges they tried to justify them i told them i didn't agree on them an they threatened to put lirn on my property, talked to an attorney about this an he went over there papers they gave me when we signed the contract (which salesman told me was the 1 we agreed on an wouldn't let me read over before i signed it,stateing he was ina hurry an assured me it was the same as before) my hands were tied so i had to give them the other $16.000.00. so i would never use nor recommend this company to anyone to do any type of work unless you got lote an lots of money you want to just throw away !!!

Everything went well except for the communication part. Everything else was excellent. They were supposed to call me when it was done, because I was out of town, and they never did. They were supposed to call me another time, and they never did. Their communication could be a lot better, otherwise they do excellent work, they are highly rated.
Description of Work: I had my roof done by JJ Swartz Co. They did a complete tear down.

Everything was good. They were trying to finish the job as it was raining and they left a little bit. Probably they didn't even notice it and I called them the next day, then they came back in two days and fixed it in two days. Because of the rain they were trying to get it all done and there was little spot but it was excellent. They didn't pick up a buzz and were happy to take care of the problem that ensued. They would have done that also if there wasn't an approaching storm. Their price was best. I checked with many places and they did the required for the money that I had and what was appropriate by my insurance company. The quality of work was excellent and there was warranty.
Description of Work: I used JJ Swartz Co about three months ago for roofing. They ripped off the present roof that was up there and replaced it with new roof.

Fast work, came soon after I called even though I'm sure they were busy due to the storms. UPDATE 1/25/13: However, less than 2 years after the repair work was done, the same shingles are missing off of the roof. After calling them, they and quot;looked into itand quot; and replied that they would be out to repair it sometime in the next week. However, I would be charged the $175 again because they do not warranty any of their roof work. If you cannot stand up for the work you do, why even do it? This company is a sham, this is the second time I have had a bad interaction with them and I would NOT use them again.
Description of Work: Had some roof damage due to the spring storms. Called J.J. Swartz, and they came out and gave an estimate. Final cost was identical to the estimate, $175, which was their minimum charge for roof work due to having to start a new box of shingles. They repaired the damage I knew about, and found a couple other spots where the shingles were loose or missing. Fast work, came soon after I called even though I'm sure they were busy due to the storms.

Response from J J Swartz Co
In response to the updated comments, J.J. Swartz Co. carries a 2 year warranty on labor and material for new work completed. However we do not warranty roof patches as it is not a replacement of an entire roof or an entire slope, instead it is a repair to an existing roof with a few new shingles as there are too many variables to determine exactly where water is penetrating the roofing system. We do our best to explain that roof patches are not guaranteed, instead they are a temporary fix to extend the life of the roof for a short period until a new roofing system is installed. Our apologies for any inconvenience or problems this may have caused as our company has been in business for over 94 years and operates on customer satisfaction, honesty, and integrity as our core values.

Pretty good work overall--we are happy with the new appearance of our basement wall + new window. The painting job they did was good. We also paid extra to have them install new silver replacement doorknobs throughout the house (20 total doors!). This was awkward--they did not bring enough to finish the work even over a couple of days, so had to come back, bring more doorknobs, etc. and it took a full week to have the total doorknobs installed. Some of the doorknobs' areas on the doors were left dirty/dinged-up (so we weren't too happy about that) so will definitely have to do some touch-up paint on some of the doors. In addition, the workers left occasional cigarette butts out in the yard and our driveway which didn't go over well with us. We're in the process of considering to have this company maybe do some additional work for us (but are getting a couple of other competitive bids from other companies) as will likely have at least $2,000 more in work done.
Description of Work: We had a frozen pipe break in our wall in our basement and our insurance company, USAA, recommended that we use JJ Swartz to do the repairs. They came out very quickly to do the walk-thru and give us an estimate, but told us that the window they had to replace would take about 3-4 weeks to come in. It did take about 3 weeks to come in, then they contacted us and we scheduled the work to begin. We were told it would take 1-2 weeks to finish the basement repairs. We are now mid-way through the 3rd week of the work--so has been a bit frustrating to have the project run over a bit. At first, the workers were good about coming out to our home pretty promptly, at about 8:00 AM most mornings--then into the 2nd week of the work, they wouldn't come until 11:00 AM or later, sometimes not until 2:30 PM (and would not have called, etc. to say when they were coming). I work primarily from a home office and do travel for my work--so told them after several days of this that it was frustrating to have to "sit home" to "guess" when they'd be coming out to work that day (so I couldn't slip out if needed to run errands, etc. for fear they'd arrive when I was briefly gone, etc.). It would have worked a lot better if they had given me a work schedule upfront (and kept to it). Update: I appreciate the company's response and again would definitely have this company back to do more work in the future. I would just ask for actual show-up times/dates for the work to be done + hope/expect the workers to show up when promised. Other than the workers' showing up at many different times throughout their 2+ weeks of work at our home and the cigarette butt issue, I think this is a highly reputable company in the Decatur area known for doing good work.

I would like to thank you for posting your comments on Angie's List as this is an opportunity for my company to show the highlights of how we do business as well as learn about the areas that we need to improve on. I am pleased to see that we were able to meet the time criteria that we originally set for the window installation and I am also pleased to see that you would in fact hire us again for future work. In response to the time frame being longer than originally anticipated, I have talked with both my bestimator and leadman and this was caused because of the additional work that we were asked to do that was not on the original scope of work. It is unfortunate that we did have multiple trips to get the door knobs installed, however this was in part because the Lowes Store that we purchased the knobs from did not have 20 in stock, therefore we installed what they had available and then returned when we recieved the other knobs we had ordered. In response to the differenct arrival times, I was told by myleadman that he had communicated that information to you, however I understand that there is sometimes a breakdown in communication and I apologize for this. The cigarette butts left onsite is unacceptable as this goes against company policy that employees are not to smoke inside a customer's home, nor leave any trace of smoking on the job site. This has since been addressed to all company empolyees, thatnk you for pointing this out. In closing, again I appreciate your leaving a response, as this is a critical method for our continued success in the remodeling and restoartion business in central Illinois as we have been serving this area for 90 years. Thank you, Brad Swartz

I would definitely get different people to do any storm damage repairs. Independently, a friend of mine had a tornado badly damage his house several years later and he had EXACTLY the same kind of experience with these folks (dragging-out completion), so unfortunately, they are NOT improving with age.
Description of Work: We had some storm damage that Schwartz was hired to repair. It involved tearing out the drywall, some reframing, mold eradication and completing a previously-started new Basement Bathroom as an additional project. They subbed the drywall work to an outfit from Sullivan (name unknown). The JJS Project Manager was a nice guy, but it was obvious that the company was over-committed and so things dragged on for a long time. I actually had the President of the Company come up and look at the quality of the rock finishing and I asked him: "Would you want this if it was YOUR house?" We eventually DID get this renovation completed, but it took a VERY long time and the insurance company was complaining because they were putting us up in a local motel while the repair work was being done. In the end, we had to move back in before the work was completed
