Joel did a wonderful job and was really great to work with. To start with we got a few bids for the project and Joel did the best job I thought with his bid. He took the most time to prepare his bid and was very detailed. He asked us lots of questions about exactly how things were going to go, even down to the woodwork trim details. The other contractors did a good job, but weren't as detailed which made me worried they would not do as good a job or would have ended up charging me extras for things we didn't discuss in their bid. Joel's timeline was also the longest at 2 weeks to do the project, but again I thought his was the most accurate of the timelines. The others quoted only a few days to do the work, but that seemed way to short to me. The project included some extensive demo, drywall and painting. It wasn't a very large area to work in, so it seemed highly unlikely to me that they would actually be able to do a good job. So Joel won our confidence in the bidding because of his experience and attention to detail. Once the project started he did a great job. He showed up promptly early every morning, and after we would discuss the plan for the day he would go about his job diligently. Over the course of 10 business days he did the demo, rebuilt the stairs, re-framed the headroom, modified the electrical, hung new drywall, taped, sanded, primed, painted, trimmed, and then installed carpeting for our new stairs. We even had Joel rebuild our basement stairs while he was at it to make them safer too. It was an extra but again his estimate was very reasonable and accurate and they turned out great. One of the things I liked most about working with Joel was how much he cared about his work. At the end of every day he left the house as clean as possible. He put up sheeting to try and contain as much dust as he could while working, and then he'd sweep and vacuum at the end of the day before leaving. All his tools and materials would be put away in the basement which was great because we had an 18 month old running around the house and Joel wanted to make sure he was as safe as possible. He was also very agreeable to making slight modifications to the project as we went along. This included things like modifying some framing to increase the amount of headroom we'd have and we changed our minds about the type of railing we wanted from wood balusters to metal ones. Since these decisions were made before he'd done any work and wouldn't impact his costs Joel did them without charging us any extra. In the end we love our new stairs. They really are a joy to walk up and down compared to what we had. It's so nice to not have to worry about ducking our heads or watching our steps, and our son just loves going up and down them. It's hard to imagine what we used to have, Joel did such a good job it's like the stairs should have always been this way. We highly recommend him.
