I made multiple phone calls and left messages for him to come and get the cabinet door sample. I received no call backs. Finally I drove to Monticello to the address listed in whitepages. I found a different business. I was told they had been in that location for several years. At this point I began to think Mr. Stubbs was a scam artist. I called and left another message stating that if I did not hear from him, I would call the police as I would believe I had been scammed. He came to my home and picked up the cabinet door sample. Then again I heard nothing. So I placed multiple calls to him. I finally received a phone call from him stating that he had had family issues, but my table would be done soon. I received my table in May. It was a dark finish like an antique oak farm house kitchen, nothing close to the door sample I had given him. The workmanship was ok. The top has a porous feel to it. There are a couple of spots were a bubble burst spots in the varnish. Aside from the color, I was not overly disappointed. I expected to receive my chairs shortly therafter. In June, again after multiple phone calls/messages to home and cell, he returned my call. I asked where my chairs were. I was told that his mother was ill and he had been in Wisconsin. I told him the color of my table was not what I expected and he got belligerent. He told me he would return my chairs. I explained that I want my table and chairs to match and was afraid another refinisher would have problems doing that. Plus I had paid him for more than half the job and he had not lived up to his commitment. He calmed down and said the best he could do was 7/1/11. So I waited. 7/1 came and went. He did not deliver the chairs, nor did he call. 7/5, 7/6, 7/7. 7/8, and 7/9 I left messages requesting he call. Finally he called 7/11 and said he had been out of state working. No, my chairs were not done. He didn't know when they would be done. He had just gotten the job in front of me done. Stated he had that person's furniture since 3/2010 and just delivered it 7/11 and they were very angry with him. He would give absolutely no estimate on when he would finish the chairs. He said, "You are probably so angry you wouldn't pay me anyway. I probably shouldn't have taken your job because I am not making enough money on it. I have had other people refuse to pay me or cancel checks because I haven't gotten their furniture to them on time". I told him I had lived up to my end of the bargain, but he had repeatedly failed to live up to his end of the bargain. He said my options were to let him keep my chairs indefinitely for the work to be completed or he would return my chairs.. He would give no time estimate at all. I told him I thought he should refund my $ as by now I have been without chairs for 5 months and now have to start entire process over. I now have to try to find someone to match the color and finish of the table. He refused to refund any money except for $100. He brought the chairs back that night at 930pm. One chair had been stripped, the others have not been touched in the 5 months he had them. He was totally remorseless. I now have to try to get someone to refinish the chairs to match the color of my table which is not the color I wanted in the first place or I have to start all over again and have the table restripped and refinished. This was a totally disastrous experience. He admitted he had his previous job 15 months prior to completing. My advice is unless you are willing to wait indefinitely for your pieces to be completed, I would not hire him. While the job he did was just ok, I would insist to see a sample of the color prior to him completing project. Learn from my costly mistake.
Description of Work: I called Rober Stubbs aka Wood Unlimited to strip and refinish my Amish made oak dining table and 6 chairs. He came to my house in February 2011 to look at them. We agreed upon a price of $1800 to refinish the table and 6 chairs to match my new kitchen cabinets. I gave him $1000 in advance and he gave an estimate of 6-8 weeks for the work to be done. I had a 4 inch sample of a color I was thinking of, but since cabinet color had not been finalized, we agreed I would call him to pick up a sample of the cabinet door when available so that he could color match the table and chairs.
