We hired Bob through a recommendation from Vanguard Plumbing. Bob was very easy to reach, and worked around our schedule to give us an estimate and work around the plumbing situation we had going on over a few weeks. Bob problem solved efficiently and resolved an issue in our older home by adding new supporting joists and building out a soffit around the new plumbing pipes. Each time we contacted / worked with Bob he was professional, timely, and his work was meticulous - he is a very skilled carpenter and we would definitely recommend him and will hire him again in the future for other carpentry work in our home. Thank you Bob!

Bob is great. Very knowledgeable, and very thorough. He always goes for the best solution, even if it's not the easiest. We felt assured that he would cut corners, and he didn't. He even helped us with some smaller jobs that weren't in scope (like removing a cabinet from a wall in the kitchen). Overall a very clean and beautiful job.

Not well. Mr Thom charges a high end price, but had problems following the architectural plans. I would expect a master carpenter to be schooled in the trade and to understand and follow specific detailed plans. Mr Thom also wouldn't take the time to communicate with the architect. Much of the work did not require a high level of skill and could of been done by a cheaper resource and managed, and save me more money. That did not happen and consequently I payed a high skilled wage for a good deal of low skilled work. He is a one man band so expect this. Budget exceeded the original estimate and I was not informed until the budget was exceeded by $2,000. That is not acceptable. When I talked to Mr Thom about this, he suggested to do some other work on my list to show goodwill. I agreed, but Mr. Thom became increasingly irritable that he agreed to do this and it showed. If you have specific architectual plans to follow, then Mr Thom is not your guy. If you require your carpenter to be communicative, I would again look some where else. If you have a remodel, he might be acceptable. Get him to stick to his estimate and if he is going to exceed it, make sure you know about it before hand. Expect to pay the same hourly rate whether the work is skilled or fairly unskilled. He will be the only guy on the job. Also be aware, that he works within his timeline solely. He does not work longer hours to move the job forward nor does he work weekends. Expect the total time start to finish to be longer than anticipated.

There was a delivery delay of my dishwasher. Bob went ahead as scheduled and adjusted the cabinets to fit the dishwasher in . Once the dishwasher was delivered he was able to schedule the installation in just a couple of days. I was very happy I did not need to have multiple companies in to complete the work. Bob is very professional and does quality work. I have used Bob before to build some built-in shelving for me and he did a great job on that project as well.

The quality of work and professionalism are top notch. It took a while for Bob to get back to us and for the project to be completed, and prices were higher than some other bidders, but since we were not in a huge rush and were looking for quality it was a good fit for us. He listened to our needs and worked with us throughout the design and installation, checking to make sure we were pleased at every step. Very nice, friendly, easy to work with. We would hire him again for other projects.
Description of Work: Designed, built, and installed a fireplace surround with mantel, and two custom cabinets (one on each side of fireplace). Installed TV above fireplace including hiding wires and moving an outlet for power.

Bob was easy to work with and seemed very honest and trustworthy. His work was high quality and we were very pleased with the speed at which he completed it. The only hiccup was a late arrival on the morning he scheduled to begin the work, but after that everything went smoothly.
Description of Work: Bob came by to take a look at the project, which was removing an old pocket door, installing a new door, and then re-doing the framing and the drywall to make everything look nice. The cost included all material and labor for the job. He gave us an estimate that same night and was able to finish the work quickly.

TThe first time I called Bob, he called me back within 24 hours. A few days later, he came to my apartment to look at the site and discuss what I wanted done. He is very easy to talk to and a very good listener. He got back to me with an estimate right away. I got two more estimates from other carpenters, and his estimate was in the same range. He came to my apartment one more time, and we finalized the deal. He arrived right on time the first day of construction, got set up quickly and started to work. At the end of the day, he was fastidious in cleaning up. It took two days to install the wall unit. The second day was on a Friday, and while cleaning up, moved tools and equipment so that it was out of the way. He helped me rearrange some of the furniture so that I would be comfortable over the weekend. On the fourth day, he managed to install all the baseboards (pretty amazing), and returned the next day to take care of a list of things he wanted to fix. He was very accommodating to every detail, checking with me about the way I wanted things. He went overboard. I told him about a mirror that I wanted to move , and he took it down and rehung it. He also tightened some wobbly legs on a table. Neither of these things were in the scope of the work. On a personal level, he is just a great guy. He has a meticulous work ethic, and is patient, and methodical. He?s also tenacious when it comes to any issues that might be a problem. For years, I have shied away from doing any renovations, because of the bad experiences I've had. I had none of that with Bob. It was really a pleasant experience (actually kind of fun), and I would call him in a minute with my next project .
Description of Work: Bob constructed and installed a wall-unit on a 10-foot wall in my living room. He also replaced the baseboards in my living room, dining area and kitchen.

Everything went better than planned. Carpenters show up on time, worked super efficiently and left the place spotless. With 170 linear feet of 3rd floor catwalks to deal with, we thought for sure this would be a 2-day job. Especially as all of the plywood would have to be cut on-site and hoisted up to the 3rd floor for installation. But no, Bob Thoms' efficiency and productivity was amazing, everything was done, and done well, in a single day. A very organized operation from start to finish. We will definitely hire him again next Spring/Summer when we launch the total renovation of the 3rd floor catwalk system. Impressive effort.
Description of Work: The 3rd floor catwalks in our condo complex needs to be completely resurfaced and repainted, but it is too cold for that kind of work, so as a short term fix to get us through the winter, Bob Thoms installed a plywood walkway system over the top of the 3rd floor catwalks to ensure their stability and safety throughout the winter months.

Our building is a six unit condo and had soffiit and fascia carpentry work that needed to be completed before a roof tear off and shingling moved forward. We appreciated the call back and would contact Thom's if and when we have a smaller interior job.his
Description of Work: The owner called back within a day of contact and was very helpful, but our job was larger and more complex than they were able to handle. Not all contractors return calls asking for project quotes so this was a plus and we will keep his name on our list for future jobs.

Bob is a master carpenter who is also skilled in electrical and plumbing. He remodeled our 45-year old kitchen by demoing down to the walls, removing the soffit and a bearing wall, relocating a non-bearing wall and two doorways. Bob built a partition to minimize the dust into the rest of the house and cleaned up at the end of each day. He reworked the electrical for lighting and outlets and moved the laundry hookups and sink to an adjacent wall. He rerouted the HVAC ductwork as needed and increased the airflow. He installed a bamboo floor throughout, installed and trimmed all cabinets including crown moulding, built a 4x10 island, and installed all appliances including a built-in refrigerator and 48-inch range hood with remote blower. In the dining room, he installed picture frame moulding throughout. This was a 4-month project that spanned over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Bob was on time every day and we had no reservations giving him complete access when we were not home. He tracked all expenses and although there were changes in project scope, he was always accommodating. Bob is meticulous, skilled and patient, answering all of our questions along the way. We could not be happier with the result and have received numerous compliments from friends and family.

Bob built a built-in bookcase across our living room wall, and replaced a bench top for us. We have an older home so it took quite a bit of work to make the bookshelves level across the room, as well as the bench top. He came in at the middle of his estimate, and the finished products look great!

Its a pretty annoying thing to deal with cabinets not closing all of the way and randomly coming open on their own. After several trips to MULTIPLE hardware stores and hitting dead ends with finding replacement hinges; my husband found Bob on Angie's List and gave him a call. You see hinges are tricky to replace, especially when the existing ones are defective and not replaceable (not even by the cabinet manufacturer). Bob was up to the task to find hinges to replace them where the doors would stay closed. Determined to replace all 20 broken hinges, Bob came out not once but twice. He figured out how to use replacement hinges where ALL of the cabinets that needed to be fixed stay closed. Don't take this review for granted but, it wasn't an easy task to complete. Hinges are not easy to deal with especially when there are non-standard measurements involved. I am so pleased with how the repair came out and very GRATEFUL for his determination to figure out a way to use replacement hinges to fix the problem. I am sorry that I didn't personally have a chance to thank him myself.

Bob and his assistant were fantastic. They demo'ed the drywall and skylight quickly and extremely cleanly, especially considering they had to carry all the debris from the second floor bathroom all the way through the house and out. The replacement rafters were installed solidly, and Bob worked with our preferred roofing company (Nyberg, whom we actually had leaned on for a referral, originally, on the project) flawlessly to seal the exterior of the patch. Bob also was very upfront and honest during the estimate phase, discouraging me from my thought of installing a roof access point in the space, saying that, no matter which way it was done, we would eventually have similar leak problems, whether those problems occurred one year or 10 years down the road, because of the location. More than a year later, and there's absolutely no drafts (I have yet to insulate and drywall the hole, because again, I wanted to make sure there would be no surprises before sealing it all up from the inside), no leaks, and, even better, it's much quieter in the bathroom during rainstorms/windstorms than it was before. Bob did a fantastic job.
Description of Work: Needed a badly leaking, very large skylight installed improperly on a low-slope roof torn out and the hole in the roof patched. This was more than a year ago...but I wanted to go a full seasonal cycle before reviewing, to make sure the patch didn't fail or anything silly.

Bob does excellent work. Even before starting the project we had a lot of confidence that it would get done right. He is professional and knowledgeable about a wide range of remodeling and repair topics. I was amazed at how quickly he was able to set up the frame for the ceiling, install drywall, and then smooth all of the surfaces. He subcontracted the painting of the ceiling and walls and we were extremely pleased that the people he chose did an amazing job, too. Bob was punctual and reliable and cleaned up each day so that we were not at all inconvenienced by the work he was doing in our home. We would (and have!) had Bob do additional work in our home and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

There have been more than a dozen different projects that I have hired Bob for and all have come out well. The biggest was my basement rehab. Bob bid the job well, and adapted to changes we made in the parameter of the job along the way. Bob did the demo, the electric, lighting, flooring, and carpentry. We wanted a secret room. He imagined and skillfully implemented a moving book shelf that concealed the entrance. Like most basements, ours doesn't have a very high ceiling and Bob suggested creating a beautiful wooden inlay that exposed and wrapped the crossbeams in beautiful wood work that makes the ceiling feel higher and it also serves to divide the space nicely. Bob communicated well with us all through the process and stuck to the timelines he promised. We are enjoying his work every day.
Description of Work: I have hired Thom Carpentry several times over the past eight or nine years. The jobs have ranged from small (handyman work) to large (entire basement renovation). I have always been more than pleased with Bob's work. He is an excellent carpenter but can do anything else you might need to have done really well. My daughter wanted a secret room when we did our basement rehab. Bob was creative in suggesting and implementing moving book shelves to conceal the entrance. We were all thrilled. Bob has also made really good suggestions every time I have hired him. I own a rental property and Bob has taken on all kinds of jobs (a complete kitchen rehab, two bathroom rehabs, & flooring installation) that help me keep the place in great shape. I could go on but I think that the most important thing I can say about Bob is that he has earned my complete trust. I can't think of a stronger way to recommend him. If you hire Thom Carpentry you will be happy about it.

Bob did an excellent job. He showed me drawings of the finished bookcases before he started and built exactly what we agreed to. He completed the job on time and for a very fair price. He even found and fixed some bad wiring while he was at it. Plus he's a really nice guy. Overall it was a great experience, I would definitely use him again.
Description of Work: Bob removed a built-in cabinet underneath a pair of windows in our master bedroom, and replaced it with built-in bookshelves. He also did some trim work in two bedroom closets.
I have worked with Thom Carpentry on many projects over the past 7 years. He has done everything from fence and gate building to bathroom, basement and kitchen gut and remodeling. In our previous house, Thom Carpentry moved walls, reconfigured the layout of our main floor, moved doorways, put in support beams and remodeled our kitchen and two bathrooms. When we purchased a new (old) house, we called on Bob again, and this time he has overseen the huge project of getting this old house ready to live in. He gutted and remodeled our basement, including custom cabinetry throughout, designed and built a beautiful oak landing and stair way, remodeled our kitchen, and more. He is very easy to work with, is friendly and patient with animals and kids, and understanding of a family living through construction. He does beautiful finished carpentry work, everything is solid and detailed. He is knowledgeable about all aspects of home remodeling, and has given great advice and suggestions, and recommends good people when needed. He is super reliable, always on time, and always tidies up at the end of the day, a pleasure to work with. It is great to have someone who now knows our old house, literally inside and out, I look forward to future projects with Thom Carpentry
Description of Work: most recently, Thom Carpentry gutted our existing basement, designed and built new living space including a bed room, laundry room, studio and rec room with rebuilt bar and cabinetry designed to my specifications. Also, gutted and remodeled a powder room, designed and built a custom landing and stairway with built in book cases, gutted and remodeled the kitchen, installed new cabinetry, windows, and extensive repairs to walls after electrical and plumbing work. In our great room, panelled walls were taken out, re-insulated, drywalled and trimmed. Some walls were moved to allow for future bathroom expansion and large custom bookcase.

The project went very well. Bob Thom worked with my husband on the stair design, materials were pre-ordered by Bob and delivered at the start of the project, so that there was no precious time wasted on shopping for materials. The project was completed within a week. It was a tricky construction, but Bob always knew how to handle the tricky spots. We love our new stairs!

We had a great experience with Thom Carpentry. Bob was puncutual and helpful. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted, but Bob, very diplomatically, suggested a different, more involved type of trim. I agreed to that recommendation only after work had begun, and Bob charged only the minor cost for the additional materials, and not for the additional labor required. His recommendation was absolutely the correct way to finish the windows. His work is beautiful - everything is flush and even, and seams are tight. The trim work transformed the look of the whole room (windows are in sizeable family room). He was punctual and cleaned up when he left, and took care with the carpet and furniture. I would recommend his work to anyone.
Description of Work: Installed window trim for 2 banks of windows. Job included labor and materials - Bob custom milled red oak trim (sill and jamb), removed old trim, installed and finished new trim.
