Tans' Roofing sent an estimator who said the roof was fine (it is only six years old) but the chimney and parapet needed masonry work (which we knew), price would probably be under $1,000. I was to receive a proposal by email in a couple of days. After 10 days I called and asked if the proposal had been prepared. Not really. When it finally arrived it was for $4,920!! When I called to question the sudden rise in cost, the owner, Paul Tansey, said he would come, on April 7, to do an estimate himself. He conclusions were dire - we needed a whole new tear-off roof, plus the masonry work. He assured us we would receive a new proposal by Friday, April 10. Today, April 18, I finally received an email from Mr. Tansey asking if we would like to discuss the FIRST proposal. He said, "Also, if there are any questions, or concerns about the proposal, we would like the opportunity to review it with you, in person or over the phone." He totally forgot the fact that HE had made a visit and reassessed the first estimate. Based on the terrible follow up and the fact that the original estimator and the owner don't seem to get along and communicate, it is a wonder how they stay in business. Needless to say I will be looking for a responsible, honest roofer.
Description of Work: I could not get an honest estimate.

THIS LETTER WAS SENT TO THE AL MEMBER ON 04-18-09, HOPING TO OFFER A RESOLUTION TO HER SITUATION, SHE DID NOT RESPOND, SO I WOULD LIKE TO SHOW ALL THE ANGIE'S LIST MEMBERS HOW SERIOUSLY WE RESPONDED TO THIS. I knew what they were going to do and when they came, they came with a crew and got it done in a short time. They were able to give me a report on what exactly they had done and I liked that. The experience was great overall.

DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE! I have never given a bad review on Craig's list and even after they lit my house on FIRE, i decided not to give them a review at all. It was only after less than a year the SAME LEAK CAME BACK! Instead of agreeing to come fix it, they gave me a QUOTE to fix the same thing again that they had fixed less than a year early. In the beginning of the project/ordeal. They gave us an estimate for fixing a leak, saying the whole roof on the small addition to our house needed to be replaced. While replacing the roof, they lit the house ON FIRE, the fire department came, our whole playroom was burned with a huge whole in the roof with 2 babies in the middle of winter. The fire department said if we had waiting a few minutes longer the whole house would have gone. Paul Tansey then pressured us not to call our insurance company and that they would fix it all, after they tried to convince us not to call the fire dept in the moment. they then came back and fixed it and it looks TERRIBLE. It does not match the rest of the roof at all. It looks like a patchwork of tar paper, it coudl not look worse. After i asked them they fixed the flashing at least to look a little bit better, but they literally lowered the value of the house with the job they did. Then less than a year later, the same leak came back. I called them and he said no problem he would come out as soon as they could. Several weeks later they came out and looked at the same leak, then I almost fell out of my chair when i got a QUOTE from them to fix it a few days later for $3,000. Not only had they not stood by their work, but even after we had been really understanding and nice when they lit our house on FIRE. They caused damage to the floors from the water damage and to the windows and left a huge mess in the yard as you can see from the photos. None of which they cleaned up or fixed. I do not take writing a bad review lightly and didn't do it even after they lit the house on fire, but i want to make sure that these people DO NOT CHEAT OTHER PEOPLE! A roof is a really important thing. Please do not trust these people to work on any part of your house.

Response from Tans' Quality Roofing Inc
We completed one job for this customer in 2007, and wrote them a Proposal 4 months ago to fix an unrelated area, that was we spoke. Let me start by saying that this report is false in many ways, and we cannot understand why this Member wrote this. We did EVERYTHING to make this Member happy. I want to first state, even after this report was posted we wrote, and called the Member to talk about this and seek some sort of resolution. After being ignored, we contacted Angie's List to explain our side and see if they could contact the Member. I heard back officially today that this customer does not want a resolution. Seems like just having a unregulated area, where blatant false statements can be posted to do us harm, is all the Member ever wanted. Seems to be this service is being taken advantage of at our expense. With over 2,000 Happy, Satisfied Angie's List Members that have done business with us over the last 6 years, I find it very discouraging that this Member feels this way. I will start by sharing our side of the story, 1. Our experience with this Member started in December of '07, they requested we come out to evaluate their leaking roof. Since the Weather Conditions were not favorable for an in-depth look at all of their Roofing Materials, we focused only on the Problem area. It was determined Shingles were installed on a Roof the NRCA only recommends Fully-adhered Roofing materials for. Thus we recommended removing the Shingles, and installing a Modified Bitumen Roof for $1,490.00, not the $2,500.00 they mentioned. The siding there was an issue, very old, and too many areas to allow water in, but the customer was adamant about us only doing the roofing work. After the Customer Contracted us for the recommendations we made, we were trying to hold off the installation date until the weather was a little better. They begged us to come out immediately and we did. During the installation, the Upper Roof melted on our Workers, making the work very time-consuming. We had a small smoldering fire where the outdated, and combustible siding was, our guys did everything to put out the small, localized fire. When the Fire Department got there, the Fire was OUT. For Safety sake the FD cut open the wall and roof tie-in and poured water in where it was not necessary. We were not cited by the Fire Department, Police Department, The Village it happened in, nor OSHA for ANY WRONGDOING. We then made every effort to put their home back the way it was. After 3 weeks of hiring Contractors to fix the internal damages, we completed and the Customer was VERY HAPPY with all the work that was done. 1 Year later, December of '08, we were called by the Member to say the roof we installed was leaking. After a thorough inspection by 2 of our best Roofing Troubleshooters, it was determined the Siding was open in many areas, and the Roof on the Upper Floor was leaking through the siding. We spent 4 hours, at our own expense caulking the siding. We then offered to remove the Upper Roof, and correctly install a new Roof for $3,000. We did not hear back from them, then after 4 months this report shows up, to our surprise. Larry Tansey – Vice President, Tans Quality Roofing One Additional note here, we got the report from the Fire Department and there are 3 major points to share. 1. The Customer with 2 babies at home did not have a working smoke detector. 2. The Fire Department was there for 50 minutes, a very minor call in their opinion 3. The Fire Department stated the Fire appeared completely out, as a precaution additional water was poured on.

My experience with Tans was very good. I will definitely hire Tans again and would recommend them to anyone!
Description of Work: One of our building gutters fell from ice dams this past winter. I called around for estimates to have the gutter replaced, to have the other gutters checked for damage, cleaning of all gutters and cleaning of flat roof drains. Jim from Tans promptly came out for an inspection, took pictures, measured and got back to me quickly with an estimate. Tan's pricing was at the lower end of all the estimates I received. I went with Tans' because I felt Jim did a thorough investigation of our repair & cleaning needs. Once the weather broke, the job was finally scheduled for April 4th. Chris and another gentleman arrived right on time, worked quickly & efficiently on the repairs. Once finished they cleaned up after themselves. Chris was friendly, courteous and answered all my questions.

I originally called Tan's Roofing out as I had a leak in my family room ceiling that I thought was attributed to some missing siding on the house. Jim came out to give me an estimate, and found what he believed to be the source of the leak: old & damaged roofing under the master bedroom porch (quite unexpected as the house is a gut rehab with an addition.) The men came out 2 weeks later and were wonderful. They ended up having to completely remove the porch, reroof the entire area, and then reassemble the deck. This was not a part of the original estimate and the owner of the company called to discuss what was found. He was very honest and up front about the situation and I ultimately made the decision to take his advice and have the appropriate work completed. It turns out the builder on the house took some pretty significant, and non compliant, shortcuts with the roofing job. Needless to say I'm paying for it now. However, Tans Quality Roofing was great through the entire situation. The men on site were on time (even early!), extremely professional, and the job was finished beautifully. I had to leave to go out of town and they came back a second day to complete what they could not finish in the dark, and required no assistance from me or my family. I'm thrilled with the results and hope to remain leak free!
Description of Work: The roof under the master bedroom patio was redone as well as some siding repaired both due to shoddy work done by the original developer.

They were really excellent and I've recommended them to a lot of people. They were quick and responsive, clear about how they were going to approach the problem and how best to deal with it. It had to do with a leak that had been ongoing for a number of years that others could not resolve. They did clear investigation and provided excellent resolution and even provided digital photos to explain their theory. I felt very trusting of them and the service they provided and have been very happy with the outcome.

They were prompt and professional with their response to our initial call for a quote. They were the third contractor we talked too and I liked their approach and professionalism the best, and they were the only one willing to stand behind or warranty the work at all as it was a "repair job". They showed up promptly on the day agreed, after which we had two solid days of rain with no leaks so they must have done something right. While onsite, I asked if they could help us do some reconfiguring of our downspout as we had some drainage issues, and they were very accommodating. They actually went out and got a couple extra custom parts for our needs and although they ultimately didn't work (we discovered much bigger issues with our catch basin which they helped to highlight) I appreciated their flexibility. Also while onsite, we had them bid on some additional masonry tuckpointing work that was VERY expensive so we're getting a couple more bids. Extra charges were added for the downspout work that was a bit more than expected but not too out of line.
Description of Work: Performed roof repairs around several vent/pipe penetrations in our condo bldg., and we signed up for a 3yr service contract with them. They also did some gutter repairs and downspout reconfiguring.

They requested a 50% downpayment, and we had trouble getting it to them from our management company, but they came out that very day anyway and made the repairs. We were able to give them the downpayment a few days after the fact, but because our association had finance issues, we were unable to pay the balance for 5 months and they were incredibly patient about it. I finally ended up paying the balance out of my own pocket because they absolutely deserved to be paid because of the fact that they went above and beyond for us and were so patient and understanding about our financial situation. They are a family run company and both Paul and Larry showed personal attention, great integrity and were friendly and understanding as well as extremely professional.
Description of Work: We needed immediate repairs to our condo building roof because water was coming into the units. They came out that very day and made the repairs in the rain, which they don't normally do, but they were aware it was an emergency. They made as much of the repairs as they could in the rain, hoping that would stave off the leak and came back when the weather cleared up to make the final repairs.

Overall, this was a positive experience. There were a few difficulties. It seemed to take forever to get any roofer to call me back after a big storm, but they were the only one to call me back. They gave me an estimate and had difficult working situations since it was the beginning of December. There ended up to be more things wrong than we initially thought. They did let me know regarding what extras were needed, but it was more expensive than the initial estimate. They were very reasonably priced. They should have kept us more informed of what was going on, but it was pretty good work and they did a decent cleanup in spite of the weather. I would hire this company in the future if needed.

1. This relatively small roof repair job appointment was made approximately two weeks in advance, and was set for 8am. The crew arrived at 5:30pm, and we did not receive a call. We repeatedly called the office for status and updates throughout the day, and never really got a solid time estimate until after 4pm. It should have been them been calling us, instead of the other way around. 2. Due to the late arrival time, the crew would be working late in the evening and into the next day. They installed the new door and left for the evening. Upon inspecting the door later in the evening, it was apparent that the door that they installed was damaged. We called and told them to bring another door the next morning, which they did. 3. Since the crew installed a damaged door, the job ran an additional day (3 working days total) due to the removal and installation of a new door. The second day of work, it began to rain while the crew had the roof ripped up and the protective flashings removed. The crew left when the rain got heavier (which is ok), but left us completely unprotected from the falling rain. We incurred massive inflow of water into our home that night which damaged electrical equipment, and caused additional water damage to our bedroom ceiling. 4. We had the owner, Paul, out to check the situation after the door and the flooding issues, and his manner was dismissive and shrewd. The only recompense he could offer was to split the cost of a ceiling painter, because we had damage in another area that was not caused by their negligence. 5. Two months later and we experienced the first real rain since the repairs and the water is still coming in through the new-and-improved rooftop. We opted out of a complete re-roofing job because money was tight; however we were completely wrong in our assumption that the $2,100 fixes the company had recommended would at least get us through until next year. Now, we are really in no better shape than we were before in terms of water entering our residence, but we did get a door out of it. When I look at all the reviews and total up all the jobs (just on this site alone) it makes me cringe to imagine someone getting rich off of this type of low quality work. We won t do business with this company any more, we are now working with another roofing company.
Description of Work: From the contract: 1. Cut any blisters in roofing, target all Open Field Seams and Failing Flashings, and sweep thoroughly, free of all loose debris, remove all Existing Counter-Flashing, and haul away all debris. 2. Apply Asphalt Primer at all Targeted Areas, allowing time to dry. 3. Torch-apply a 4mm layer of Smooth Certainteed Flintlastic STA Modified Bitumen Membrane Material1 to all Primered Areas. 4. Install 70 Linear Feet of Termination Bar, mechanically fastening at Top of Wall Flashings, and applying a Bead of Solar Seal Caulking Compound. 5. Create a Drainage Saddle 6 off the wall, using 2 Insulation and 20 of Q-Tapered Insulation, Mechanically Fastening with 2 , to 6 long Galvanized Screws, apply a layer of #43 Asphalt Base Sheet to cover with Plates and Screws. 6. Torch-apply a 4mm layer of Smooth Certainteed Flintlastic STA Modified Bitumen Membrane Material to all New Saddle Material. 7. Remove Existing Rooftop Access Door, and Related Frame, then Install 1-New Jeld Wen Pre-hung Two-Lite Steel Entry Door, Inswing Left, 32 X 80 for Doghouse entry. 8. Response from Tans' Quality Roofing Inc
OUR ESTIMATOR WENT OUT AND INSPECTED THEIR ALREADY LEAKING ROOF, WHICH HAD CAUSED SIGNIFICANT INTERIOR WATER DAMAGE. WE WROTE A PROPOSAL TO REMOVE THE WALL FLASHINGS, AND CORRECTLY INSTALL A 12YEAR WARRANTIED ROOF, APPROXIMATELY 1600 SQUARE FEET, AND A NEW ENTRY DOOR, ALONG WITH ROOF SADDLES FOR PROPER DRAINAGE FOR $4,890.00. THE CUSTOMER INSISTED WE DO A CHEAPER REPAIR, WHICH WE TRIED TO TALK THEM OUT OF, AS REPAIRS CANNOT BE WARRANTIED LIKE A TEAR-OFF, OR RE-ROOF. TO SATISFY THEM, WE WROTE A $2,070.00 REPAIR, INCLUDING NEW ROOFTOP ACCESS DOOR. WE DID HAVE A LATE START THE DAY OF THE SCHEDULED REPAIR, AS THE PREVIOUS DAYS WORK HAD UNANTICIPATED EXTRA WORK. IT IS ONLY FAIR TO COMPLETE THE PREVIOUS CUSTOMER'S WORK BEFORE STARTING A NEW PROJECT. WE TRIED TO POSTPONE THE WORK UNTIL THE NEXT DAY, WHEN CONDITIONS WOULD BE MORE SUITABLE, BUT THE CUSTOMER CALLED FRANTICALLY LIKE THIS WAS SOME KIND OF A EMERGENCY REPAIR. WE DID EVERYTHING WE COULD TO ACCOMMODATE THEM AS THERE WAS A RAINSTORM APPROACHING THAT EVENING. SINCE WE COULD NOT GET THE REPAIRS DONE BEFORE THE RAIN CAME, MORE WATER WENT INTO THE HOUSE. UPON INSPECTION INSIDE, THE WET AREA'S WERE ABOUT 10% OF LARGE AMOUNT OF INSIDE DAMAGE. WE OFFERED TO HAVE OUR PAINTER FIX THE INSIDE, WHICH THEY REFUSED. WE REDUCED THE COST OF THE AMOUNT DUE, AND AT THAT POINT THOUGHT THIS REPAIR WAS COMPLETE, AND THE CUSTOMER WAS CONTENT WITH THE OUTCOME. THAT WAS 3 MONTHS BEFORE THIS EXTREMELY NEGATIVE REPORT WAS POSTED. WE WOULD HAVE GONE OUT AND FIXED ANY LEAKING, EVEN THOUGH THE CONTRACT DID NOT HAVE A WARRANTY ON IT. THE COMMENT THAT IT DIDN'T REALLY RAIN FOR 2 MONTHS AFTER IS FALSE, WE HAD QUITE A FEW HEAVY RAINS AFTER, AND NEVER HEARD BACK FROM THEM. WE WERE NEVER EVEN GIVEN A CHANCE TO CORRECT ANY PROBLEM THERE MIGHT BE, THAT WHY THIS REPORT IS SO SURPRISING. AS FOR THE DOOR, IT HAD A SMALL DENT ON IT, IT WAS STILL A VERY FUNCTIONAL, LOCKING ROOFTOP ACCESS DOOR. IN NOW WAY DID WE TRY TO PASS IT OFF ON THEM, AS SOON AS I WAS MADE AWARE OF IT, I HAD A REPLACEMENT ORDERED, AND INSTALLED. WE WERE VERY UPFRONT EVERY TIME WE COMMUNICATED WITH THIS CUSTOMER. ACCORDING TO THEIR REPORT WE WERE NOT UPFRONT, AND THEIR STATEMENT ABOUT US GETTING RICH DOING SUB PAR WORK IS COMPLETELY UNFAIR TO US. AFTER ALL THE MATERIALS AND RENTS ARE PAID, AND LABOR COSTS FOR ALMOST 40 WORKERS, IN THIS CHICAGO AREA WITH OVER 300 ROOFING COMPANIES, WE HAVE A SMALL PROFIT LEFT OVER TO PAY OUR OFFICE STAFF. THE WORK WE DID AT THEIR PROPERTY WAS NOT SUB PAR AT ALL, THEY CHOSE THE CHEAPER REPAIR WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE CHOSEN A PROPERLY INSTALLED NEW ROOF. PAUL TANSEY - PARTNER

We contacted them late in the roofing season (when it gets too cold they can't work). They worked diligently everyday they could. If they could only work one or two hours because of the cold and/or precipitation they did. They did an excellent job of cleaning up after themselves, also. One drawback, they underestimated the bid. They told us upfront and we agreed to the new figures because they weren't much different from the other roofers' bids and we liked the TQR people.
Description of Work: Removed the old roof and put on a new roof and then installed gutter guards.

I contacted Tans' about finding the cause and fixing a leak in our roof that caused water damage within our house. The damaged part of the roof was not accessible to the estimator so I agreed to have workmen come out, assess the damage and fix it if they had the materials on hand. A date was set for workmen to come out and I made the down payment. The damage was too extensive for them to repair that day, but Tan's agreed to come out the next day with more men and the right materials to fix the roof. They did not require a down payment for the second day of work. Tans' was very responsive and flexible to work with.
Description of Work: Replaced a portion of our roof.

TQR did a great job-they arrived when they said they would, it took exactly as long as they said it would, and they were very communicative throughout. Their team was very conscientious about making sure that the crumbling bricks they were removing didn't do any damage to the cars parked below. The wall is now in much better shape. Most impressive was that, about 5 months after completing the work, a leak re-appeared on a section of the roof they had worked on. Although that leak was not specifically mentioned in the contract, it had been verbally discussed at the time the work was originally performed. Rather than nitpick about whether they were responsible, they sent someone out immediately to diagnose the problem, and within a couple of days they sent people to remedy the problem, all at no charge. I was very, very impressed. One thing to note: the workers speak very limited English. It was very helpful to speak Spanish when communicating with them.
Description of Work: Repaired crumbling parapets on our condominium roof, sealed parts of the roof that were leaking or in danger of leaking.

Paul inspected my roof on a Friday morning and sent me a very detailed proposal the same afternoon. He also kindly accommodated my request to start the work the next day, which was a Saturday. Paul and Adrian arrived my house as scheduled on Saturday morning. All the services listed on the proposal were conducted well above my expectation. They also cleaned all the debris after finishing the repair. I am very satisfied with the service provided by TAN'S QUALITY ROOFING. The price is also very reasonable based on the estimates I got from various roofing company. There is no any surprise charge. I am glad that I can find TAN'S QUALITY ROOFING through Angies list. I would definitely use their service again when my roof needs full replacement. I will also recommend this company to all my friends.
