The was to be completed in the Fall of 2008, but due to an early winter snow they were only able to complete the flat roofing portion. The masons had to wait until Spring 2009 for warmer weather. The roofers were prompt and professional. The masons were fantastic, working quickly and efficiently and the results are beautiful.
Description of Work: The flat-roof bays on our building were leaking, requiring new material on those patches of roof as well as masonry work around the bricks and front door.

Took awhile to have estimator visit (there was a huge storm in the city and I was pretty far down the pipeline); but once I received the estimate work began the next day. Rotted soffit/fascia replacement took place once work began, as it had not been apparent to inspector because it was hidden from view (and original contractor--NOT Tan's--had used interior rather than exterior grade plywood 22 yrs ago). Crew worked diligently till past dusk for three days, and left the grounds immaculate. Looks great and no longer leaks.
Description of Work: Inspect and replace aluminum gutters, redesign and install downspout, replace soffit/fascia board.

I called Tans for a quote on a Thursday night and they said they could come by to do the estimate Saturday when I was home from work, which was great. The estimator came on time, and seemed to know what he was doing. and recommended a larger size gutter and downspout than I had since I was having issues with overflow. On Monday he emailed me a very detailed written estimate. Later that afternoon I got a call from the scheduler saying they weould be by to do the work in the morning! That was to soon for me -- I still needed to talk to my neighbor to get her OK for them to be on her property to do some of the work, plus get her to agree to join me on the adjoining gutter on her wall that was missing. So even though I'd signed the contract, they agreed to wait on the scheduling until I could work things out with her. It took me nearly three weeks, and in the end she insisted she would take care of her own gutter, So I contacted Tans because I had to ask them NOT to do part of the job due to the need of my neighbor to be independent. They were a bit put-out, not because I was reducing my contract but because they felt very strongly that I would be better served if they did the whole job as a piece. Nonetheless, they sent me back a smaller contracr right away, on a Friday, and they completed the work on Monday, nice and neat (and I didn:t even have to be there, I just left a key to the gate in the mailbox. The only complication at all was with my neighbor

I received three quotes, two were extremely close, and one was almost 12k higher. I felt Tan's was the most responsive and would do the best job. It took a while to get the skylights measured and ordered but once they were in and the weather cooperated, the job went extremely well. The foreman on the job, Rodric, was great. He and his crew would work from 8 to 8 when the weather cooperated and did a high quality job. The existing roof was wood shingles with 3 - 4 layers of asphalt shingles on top. Ridiculous but all of it had to come off. They also had to install plywood decking on the entire roof since it was never installed. They cleaned all the materials up, protected the neighbor?s houses extremely well and did a great job. About a week later, I noticed that one of the furnace vent pipes had been snapped, probably by accident when they were tearing off the roof. The problem was not identifiable from outside. I called Larry (the owner) and he had it corrected right away by installing a new pipe.
Description of Work: Had a complete tear-off of the house and garage (approximately 2600 sq ft), five skylights replaced and gutters installed.

I scheduled a Tuesday morning appointment with Jim to look at the gutters on my house, and when he didn't show up at the appointed time, I called him, thinking that perhaps I had the wrong date. Jim said he "forgot" to transfer my information to his list for that day. He seemed befuddled, and was unapologetic about his mistake. I rescheduled the appointment for the afternoon of the same day. When he arrived, he took some pictures, told me I needed a new roof, then mumbled something about needing to get some lunch before his next appointment. He told me that the ballpark cost for a new gutter was "a couple thousand", and that he'd get back to me with an estimate in "a couple of days", and would ask his colleague who works on tuckpointing to call me with an estimate for that part of the job. It's almost two weeks since the date of the appointment, and I haven't heard from him or his colleague. I won't be working with them.

Tans provided a very detailed, professional estimate of the work that needed to be done. They were very responsive to additional follow-up questions. They scheduled the work quickly even though there were delays due to rain. They had a large team that did the work and finished within three days, which was significantly shorter than we had anticipated. They quickly came out to do some follow-up work we requested. They were sensitive to my concerns re removal and replacement of the roof and did a great job with it. Would definitely hire them again and recommend to anyone.

Tans did a great job fixing my downspout, which had been installed improperly and water was lapping over the gutter. When the job was done, they showed me that the water no longer was stuck in the gutter, but went down as it was supposed to. Only complaint: estimator was to let self in and provide estimate. He did that, but estimate was not for work I requested, so he had to return to provide a new estimate.

Excellent work. Great communications. Had to reschedule work time, due to rain, which was done two days in advance. Wood replacement for gutter fascia was done neatly and professionally. Work up brick parapet walls was professionally done and looks great. The white coating was applied one month after the other repair / rooging replacement, as promised and also rescheduled due to rain. Crew was polite, called in advance to reconfirm and ensured review of work, prior to departing work site. This was an excellent experience from beginning to end, including the owner calling me to notify me that the new Chicago code with respect to roofing materials had gone into effect, requiring the replacement of the originally specified silver material with the better reflective white material.
Description of Work: Repair and recoat garage roof. Rain storm had blown back tarpaper covering on garage. Tan's replaced the weathered wood, reattached the tar paper, completely replaced the roofing material up the brick parapet walls underneath the brick parapet wall topper tiles, replaced missing / broken brick parapet wall topper tiles, integrated new gutter and coated roof in the new white environmentally sealant, required by Chicago as of May. Removed all debris and cleaned up work area.

Great. This is a very professional and responsive company. I waited a while to submit a report until we'd had a few rainstorms, and we had no leaks. They showed up when they said they would. The job was completed when they said it would be. They left the property neat. They were patient with questions. They weren't the lowest bid we'd received, but they seemed very thorough, and we plan to be in this house quite some time. Price ended up just a bit higher than estimated because a small, flat roofed porch wasn't included in the estimate, and that roof was in bad shape. Not only did they re-roof the porch, but they also added a pitch to it.
Description of Work: Installed new (tear-off) roof on single-family home and detached garage. Price included removing a couple of layers of roofing, some new decking, installing flat roofing over a small porch, installing about 20' of a ridge vent and other vents on the house and garage, and hauling of debris and clean-up.

We called them after doing research on Angie's list. We had a bad leak in the roof that was causing damage to our kitchen ceiling and we needed immiedate help before the next heavy rain came. These guys were terrific. We call on 5-27-09 and by 6-1-09, we were sending in the other half of the bill. My husband was very satisfied with their work and I was very satisfied with their service. This was a good pick.
Description of Work: We had the following done: --visually inspect roof to best determine source of active leaks. this is to include areas targeted by estimator such as chimney flashings, roof penetrations, lead flashing and mushroom vents. --Lift shingles in these areas and repair as needed. --Re-seal chimney flashing and rubber pipe boots w/Solar Seal Caulking Compound. --Clean and haul away all work related debris.

We had hired Tans' to do roof repairs on a 3-yr maintenance contract. We also had issues with roof drainage and downspouts leading to the catch basin. They were very helpful in rigging up a new (temporary) solution with a diverter gizmo and did the work quickly. In the end, the solution didn't work as it ended up flooding our neighbor's basement (OOPS!) but Tan's was willing to work with us to credit back part of the cost of the work they bid. Again, in the end, we ended up with a more permanent solution after other catch basin and sewer repairs, but they were helpful in the meantime.
Description of Work: Additional work was done to temporarily fix the gutter/downspouts in our condo building. We hired Tans' originally to do roof repairs but asked them to do this extra work while here.

The crew was excellent. They arrived each morning by 7am and worked hard through the day. The first day became complicated because of the rotted and unstable window (see above) that they had to replace which took them off their roofing schedule a bit. They had to do the window work before continuing with the roof replacement because the dormer needed to be reshaped and resized which affected the roofing. Having done the window, they then stayed and worked until approximately 9pm to put down the weatherproof membranes on the roof in case it rained overnight. They were back at it by 7am the next day. In addition to the outstanding and dedicated crew, I thought that the owners and office staff were very good. They were responsive to our calls and emails, provided good estimates, came in with reasonable prices, offered valuable options and were clear about the cost of them, and were upfront about the possibility of finding surprises in an old building. When they did discover the window problem, the owner came over and explained the issue clearly, showing me both inside and outside what was going on and what had to be done. He provided a few different choices on how to fix it and materials with different costs. I thought that they were very flexible, easy to work with, clear, honest and open and have good integrity. Even with the additional work, the total price was still below other estimates I had received just for the known work.
Description of Work: Tan's replaced the architectural front roof of our row house. This included tearing off the old roofing, replacing the decking where needed, and putting down weather proofing, shingles and new flashing. They diligently cleaned up the old materials immediately (they had torn off the old roofing and hauled it all away within the first 4-5 hours). While doing the removal of the old roof, they discovered a significant problem with a dormer window which needed to be removed and reconstructed with new materials. The rebuilt the window frame, re-set the window, sealed it, and replaced the decorative wood inside.

The work took almost two whole days. Each day the workers began at or before 8:00 a.m. and worked until 7:00 p.m. on the first day and nearly 6:00 p.m. on the second, with only 1/2 hour break for lunch. The foreman on the job, whose name I believe is Roddick, was very polite, professional and hard-working, as was his team of workers. The only problem occurred when roofing debris fell into the roof vent pipe, causing the kitchen sink to back up and not drain. Tans' called out a plumber, who cleared the debris from the pipe in the crawlspace. This was done quickly and efficiently. Other than that one small glitch, all work was done very much to my satisfaction. The total amount paid turned out to be around $300 more than the estimate because new flashing material had to be fabricated and installed on the rear dormer, so additional materials and labor charges were incurred. This work was not anticipated in the original estimate. All areas were cleaned up very well at the end of each day.
Description of Work: Installed an entire roof, which included removing shingles and bad plywood from two areas that were sagging and replacing with new plywood; installed new ridge vent system; replaced old skylight with new one; and tuckpointed areas of chimney and replaced several bricks.

We gave Tan's a second chance after a less than satisfactory first job. This April we called them to repair some minor wind damage to roof trim. The estimator came promptly, and after determining that it would be a small job, then tried to sell us some very expensive and totally unnecessary gutter shields. Never mind that we don't have any overhanging tree branches anywhere near the gutters. We politely declined. He said he would contact us with the estimate for the work, and he never did. Two weeks went by and after some prodding on our part, Tan's finally gave us an outrageous $1,600 quote for an "inspection", and, oh yes, they could also replace the couple of pieces of fascia that had come loose (which was the original reason for the call, and all that needed to be done). Again, we politely declined, and found someone else who was able to put back the original fascia that had come off (so no materials charge), completed the job in 1 hour, AND charged only $50 for the labor! Tan's Quality Roofing? More like Tan's Rip-off Roofing! Avoid them at all costs.

We have gone through all of our customer database trying to find this customer, to be able to compare our notes. Her first, and last name do not come up. It is quite possible the estimate could have been for another member, and she is just writing the Negative Report for, of it could be she is writing about another Angie's List Contractor. Our experience with Tan's was excellent from start to finish. Their estimate fell somewhere in the middle of the others. (They were the only ones who included a railing system in the price though). The company was extremely professional and easy to deal with. The only miscommunication was that they came a day earlier than expected. However, that was not a problem. The finished product is excellent. We're looking forward to spending an enjoyable summer lounging on the roof. Now, we can be confident that we won't end up IN the 3 season room!

Tan's was amazing. They were ontime and the estimator was EXTREMELY thorough and resourceful (he spent 45 minutes with me while everyone else spent about 10). They were prompt in providing an estimate which was reasonable and was not for more service than I needed. They also gave me recommendations on how to keep my roof in good shape and when I need to do some maintenance again. Definitely going to use them for all of my future roof needs.
Description of Work: Performed roof repairs on flat, vintage roof. Assessed overall "health" of the roof.
