A gentleman from Tan's Roofing came out and checked out the situation and told us exactly what the problem was and what to do. He even referred Gutter Monkeys to us who were able to come during a weather break and take care of our problem. I really appreciated how quickly he came out and how he offered free advice charging nothing for traveling to our home.
Description of Work: We had a leaking gutter during a cold spell. We had no idea what the problem was, having had the gutters cleaned just a month or two before. We had trouble getting someone to come out due to the weather.

I got two quotes for the job, and Tans' was a little bit higher. However, after talking to all of the companies, I felt that Tans was offering a better warranty and materials for that price. Also, they were extremely responsive to my many, many questions, explaining in detail the process of replacing a roof. It took about 2 weeks to schedule the job once I paid the deposit, and the work itself only took one day to complete. Ask me 10 years down the road how the roof is holding up, but right now, I'm satisfied with the work.

I sent a note asking for an estimate at 6am. By 8am they had called me. They also followed up later to ensure my issues were resolved.
Description of Work: I did not need to use Tan's service, because my roof repair was covered by the Homeowners Association. However, their responsiveness, willingness to give advice and insight and concern deserve a hurrah! Thank you! I would definitely use them if I found myself needing more extensive work.

I did a lot of research for this project and Tans was one of several bids I received. Because of several very positive reviews from Angie's List and a positive first conversation with one of the owners, I chose to go with Tans. Their pricing was not the lowest, but they were offering a higher quality shingle and roofing system that was better than some of the the competitors' bids. The communication was pretty good throughout the process. They explained to me what they were doing and answered my questions (I ask more than your average consumer as a result of my research and interest in home construction). There were some minor hiccups but that happens in every job. Nothing of large concern as we talked through any issues and came to resolution without much stress. I have had a roof replaced on an investment property with another roofing contractor, so I have a basis for comparison. When the job actually began, Tans' used their full resources and knocked out the job in 2 days. This also covers the prep work and clean-up. This was a much better experience that my previous roof job. Ultimately, time will be the true test for the quality of the job. However, from what can be judged at the moment, I am pleased with the quality. I would not hesitate to use them again for any other maintenance/roofing need.
Description of Work: - Tear-off and reroof of 2 story 2-flat. Architectural shingles (Certainteed), ice and water shield. Also included gutter and downspout replacement. Replaced "mushroom" cap venting with continuous ridge vent.

Tans came to our house, provided a great estimate, and put on a new roof for us. Each night, Tans would email us to let us know of any status updates on their workers for the following day with regard to the weather and their schedule. They noticed a problem with our brick parapet wall and provided a low price to fix the work on the spot. They even provided additional services to repair two leaks on our garage roof at cost. They provided pictures along the way and helped us with the appropriate paperwork to obtain a tax credit. We found them to be professional, on time, and excellent at what they do. We would highly recommend them to anyone else.

I originally asked Tans to assess two of our roofs - main house and coach house - following signs of water damage. They were extremely responsive and confirmed the need for repair for one section on the roof on our main house, and they gave us an estimate for that work. When their team arrived and started the repair, they found that the damage was more extensive. They repaired the additional section as well, only charging us for the additional materials needed. They did not charge for the additional labor although they were there for several more hours. They also allowed us to setup a more flexible payment schedule, with no additional charge for interest. They were honest, thorough and competent in their descriptions and in the work performed.
Description of Work: Replace the plywood and roofing on the flat section of the roof on the main house.

I submitted a request on their website for them to contact me to schedule an estimate. David Tan's called back, but didn't have his schedule handy. I didn't understand why he would call if he wasn't prepaired to schedule the appoitnment. He tride calling back to schedule again, but I wasn't interested. Don't waste my time and call to schedule an appointment if you aren't ready to schedule an appointment.

Response from Tans' Quality Roofing Inc
I called from home where I was still sick from a virus and had not gone into the office that day to pick up my updated schedule calendar. I informed him that I could schedule him the next day in my original offer and this was because in his messgae to us I was reading "Gutters and Downspouts are falling down and the pitched roof has broken rafters". To me this could have been an emergent situation and its more likely that our repair men would be coming out on a Time and Material basis, possibly not our estimator. I sided on the side of being proactive. He mentioned that he was not interested and hung up immediately but I was not sure of what just happened so I contacted our office and called him back because I remembered we had an apointment around the time he wanted which was 3 days ahead and I knew better then to schedule so far ahead without knowing for sure what we could do to accommodate his time line request. I called back 5 minutes later and he answered and once again after I mentioned that I was ready to schedule, he said he wasn't interested and hung up. Later on that same Tuesday about 5 to 6 hours later, he calls my office, I had just gotten in and I picked up the phone and its him again and wanted to discuss someone from Tans' Quality Roofing to come out for a scheduled visit and then I began to speak, he stopped me and again for the 3rd time in one day, said that he was not interested and hung up the phone. The next day he writes this report. This is a very confusing situation, I tried to help with calling as soon as possible for possible repair work after I read about his gutters falling down and the roof rafters were broken, I figured a tree fell on his house and was ready to schedule for the next day as I told earlier that I had my Wednesday schedule with me and because we do emergency repair. I would rather be attentive to problem solving then having to wait until I feel better because then it might be "too late"," I found someone else" etc......... I did my best for this A/L member and would still be willing to help out if requested. Paul Tansey President

TQR was professional and responsive, and we are thrilled with our new roof. We now love it when it rains!
Description of Work: This was a major roof repair, as the original wood shingle roof from over 100 years ago was under a couple of layers of more more recent shingles. Everything had to be removed, and the roof had to be surfaced with plywood to create a fresh surface for the new shingles. In addition we had new gutters and gutter guards installed.

The service was great!! Larry Tansey and his team have been phenomenal during the entire process. We purchased an older home that was built in the early 1900s and it did not have an exhaust exit for the batroom fans. We emailed Tans from Angie's list and they had someone out to our place for an estimate within 2 days. They advised us that it would take a week to get the quote, and it did. They were very understanding and timely. They did experience some email slowness with their email provider, however, that did not slow them down. They were scheduled to be at out home by 8am on Saturday and they were there at that exact time. They were quick and professional and completed the job by 9:20am. I would definitely recommend Tans roofing as they were the fairly priced and accomodating.

They first came out for a quote. They took pictures and provided the quote quicker than expected. I called to make an appointment. However, they showed up the following day to do the work because it was primarily outside. Two guys came and took a little over an hour to complete the work. They cleaned up well. The price was also what they originally quoted.

Given TANS' reputation and high-quality ratings on Angie's List, it's no surprise that everything was excellent. They did a wonderful job. The work was high-quality and they thoroughly cleaned the work area and surrounding grounds free of all debris. I especially liked that Larry Tansey kept us well-informed of what they were going to do and when they were going to do it. Larry even called after the first day of work to check it out, make sure everything looked good, and let him know. The head guy doing the job, Chris, met with me and showed me everything they were doing. I was amazed at the detail that he went through and the amount of carpentry work he was doing in the areas that needed to be replaced. I knew we were in good hands. This was not an easy job (in fact, I had a hard time someone who could do it) and I'm extremely pleased. I wouldn't hesitate to use TANS again. Their high ratings on Angie's List are well-deserved!
Description of Work: Repair/replace soffit/fascia on 3-story 6-flat in Edgewater area. Scraped loose material from the front of the building as needed to expose the damaged materials. Repaired areas as needed by doing carpentry work to close off animal entry points. Applied caulk sealant and primed areas for paint. Painted entire soffit and ornamental pieces.

We called Tan's. A couple of guys came out for the estimate. They told us to watch our E-mail for an estimate.A week later we received one of the most articulate, comprehensive proposals with recommendations I've ever received. The proposal included removing the aluminum siding from the back of the house, repairing around the back porch roof seam,re-flashing around the back window, and installing new vinyl siding. My wife is very concerned about the appearance of our house. We do not live in a historic neighborhood but we live close to one.We were afraid that the new vinyl siding would ruin the appearance of the house. Tan's responded a week later with another lengthy, articulate, and highly informative E-mail. He addressed ALL our concerns ! He also re-articulated his recommendations that we seriously consider upgrading the roofing vent system. We agreed to all his recommendations. Tan's scheduled the job. A couple weeks later we had three guys working on our house for two days to complete the job. Also Tan came by with advance vinyl samples for my wife's approval. The craftsmanship is excellent and the house looks great.
Description of Work: My wife and I live in a 1-1/2 story bungalow. Our 15 year-old roof was beginning to leak around the chimney, soil stack and back porch.Full disclosure... I've done roof repairs myself. I knew I needed flashing repair. I've done some flashing repair myself but I could tell that this exceeded my ability. We needed the advice of professional roofers.

This was a project that I had hoped to delay for another five years. When I realized that the roof needed to be replaced, I received several quotes from highly rated companies on Angie's' List, including Tans'. After receiving the quote, Larry Tansey came to my home, stood on the roof with me, and explained the various components of the quote and the process. His visit and explanation provided me with a comfort level that I needed for the project. After signing the contract, I received a call to schedule the work. The crew arrived when scheduled and worked hard to complete the project on time. The finishing touches (special coating) were applied a few days later, as promised. The crew was friendly and the cleanup was excellent. The final price was within a couple hundred dollars of the quote. Overall, the experience was pain free and I would highly recommend Tans' to friends.
Description of Work: Tans' did a complete tearoff of a sloped flat roof on a 1906 greystone. They installed insulated hardboard, a base sheet, and a modified bitumen membrane. They completed all necessary flashing, removed and replaced the gutter, and applied several coats of reflective roof coating.

So I called Tan's quality roofing to take care of it. I used some plastic to cover it up to prevent water from coming in. They had someone come out and they quoted me $950 and they said they would remove the rotted wood and reinstall the facia board. They removed and reinstalled flashing on the roof. It rained again and I was still getting water in my garage. After calling back they told me they knew that the work they did was not going to be sufficient but they were scared to do any extra work. After consulting with them further, they told me the vents were wrong on my roof and it needs to be replaced. The felt shingles on the roof were poor in quality and they wanted to replace the entire roof and install all new vents. New price was $5,500.I had a new guy come out and he told me that the work i had done was not going to fix the problem at all. I apparently didn't have any moisture barrier and Tans roofing never told me that. After talking further with the new company they told me there was nothing wrong with my shingles or vents. They going to remove the vinyl siding, remove and replace the rotted section, add a moisture barrier, and install new facia that will correctly allow the water to drip away from the wall for just $2900.
Description of Work: I had a leak in the wall in my garage and the wood was starting to rot.

Response from Tans' Quality Roofing Inc
Customer contacted our Office on 11-08-11 to say his Garage ROOF was leaking, we sent our Estimator to meet him, and take pictures of the inside and outside, we noticed the Fascia at same area had openings, and showed some rot, we wrote a $950 Proposal to replace any rotten Fascia wood, and then cover all Fascia with Metal. The member accepted that Contract, and we completed the work 12-07-11. We did not know his siding was an issue, as we were called for a Roof issue, and found, and corrected his Fascia opening. On 12-22-11 he called to say there was more moisture in the garage, so we did a Watertest on 12-27-11. It was determined then, which he agreed to, the Roof was not installed properly, so we wrote a Proposal to correct that. He only paid for HALF of the work we did on 12-07-11. He Promised us the remaining half in the Spring of 2012. We reached out to him yesterday via Voicemail, and to our surprise, he leaves this report. Seems this was his intention all along. I wonder how many Contractors he has threatened, and not paid in full. We did nothing wrong with this Customer, and even went above and beyond. Larry Tansey

it is essential in doing business with all contractors that you properly define the problem and together you map out a scope of the project in order to solve the problem. As was the case with our roof and gutters, with the increased downpours of rain on a per hour basis the solution to the problem was multi steps with 2 contractors, one of which was Tans. both were excellent and performed different scopes of work at different times to solve the drainage problem.
Description of Work: Tans replaced the gutters and roof on our retired home in Old Town and did an outstanding job. the original problem was a wet basement and gutters, a new roof and work by another contractor in the basement solved the problem The solution to the problem was one of trial, error, change and acceptance and Tans and their people stuck with us thru the total project, I can honestly recommend not only their work but also their professionalism thru the total project.
We had a great experience with Tan's Quality Roofing. We needed a new roof on our main house and they came and gave us an estimate. They provided a detailed explanation about each line item and dealt with a nightmare of an insurance adjuster at least five times without blinking an eye. I had to keep asking for more information and having them fax things over to State Farm and they were extremely nice about it. We replaced the gutters on the house as well. The folks that showed up to put on the roof were friendly and quick and did a great job. They took a lot of pictures to document the work for the insurance adjuster as well and generally went above and beyond. The roof is perfect. The entire experience was pleasant and they really care about their customers. I would absolutely recommend them.

I called them and they came out and were perfectly nice. They began the work with different shingles than I had requested. So I had them take those down. Originally told me that they could get the color of shingles that I liked. Was told that they could get the shingles from a supplier in Aurora, but they turned out to be different than what I asked for. The workers would come out and eat breakfast on my porch, which I didn't care for. The work ran from Sept 1 - Oct 1, 2011. They bent the wrought iron fence and killed the grass in the front where a blue plastic type material sat for a month in the front of my house. The dumpster sat in front of my house for a month and the neighbors began to complain to me about that. Last week when it got really hot (July 2012) the shingles in the back came off. Then I called them on a Saturday (July 14th) and didn't hear anything. And then I called back on Monday and they said someone had already come out to do the repair, which they did do. They hadn't notified me that they were coming. I would not use this roofer in the future. The workers were not professional in that they put their latter on my neighbor's new fence.

I called to get estimate and they said someone would call me back within 1-2 days to speak to me, which they did not. Five full business days later i get a call with an estimate. This was unfortunate because I needed to show them in person the areas that needed work on the roof, clearly out of visible sight. They said they sent someone out to take a look, but I needed to see them in person. Perhaps if they had called me back to get more details.... Anyway in the 5 business days they waited, I received 4 other estimates for places that showed up in person (also they responded within 1-3 days too)

They did a fabulous job throughout. They removed the existing roofing material, constantly fulling up pick-up trucks and carted the material away. They then added a layer of insulation on top of the decking, put down and torched the rubberized material, and then painted it a reflective silver to minimize the adverse effects of heat over the summer months. This was a big job, yet they worked hard at it. They always had people show up at the job site every day unless it was raining. They had some of the most skilled roofers I have ever seen (I was climbing up frequently to inspect the roof while they were working).
Description of Work: Complete re=roofing of flat torch down roof. They stripped off the old rubberized roof (4 layers of roofing that was there since the late 1800's), and put down a new torch down roof.

Tan's replaced our three-section flat roof that had recently been applied by a contractor who completely botched the job The previous contractor had torn off our old rooftop deck, installed a new roof incompetently, and made our three persistent leaks worse than ever. We were beside ourselves after dealing with months of buckets and plastic tarps while trying to get the first contractor to fix his mess. Paul thoroughly diagnosed the many problems on his first visit, sent us an extremely detailed proposal (product names, his certifications to use them, etc.), and sent a crew as soon as we agreed to the proposal. They ran into complications with electric supply, skylight, and penthouse door, and Paul brought in subcontractors immediately to deal with them. He also hired a siding installer to replace some fiber-cement board siding, which was part of the original proposal. We've now had enough spring rain to know that the Tans roof is perfectly sound. We can tell just by looking at it that it was done by skilled craftsman who don't cut corners--even though the configuration of our house and the one next door made their working space difficult at some points. To maintain their guarantee, Tans requires that any new roof deck be installed by them. They sent what we believe to be a fair proposal on the deck project, and we feel assured that they'll do an equally professional job of it. Moreover, Paul was patient, meticulous, and courteous throughout the work, understanding that we'd been through roof h*** and were wary of any potential new problems. Tans' price on the roof was just slightly higher than that of Rogers Roofing, which a roofing inspector had recommended. However, we sensed that Tans was more about the work, and less about the sale; Rogers wanted to put a sign in our yard for 30 days (!) and send letters to all our neighbors. Also, Tans is Chicago-based. Overall, we felt the work was well worth the money and the peace of mind that we were hiring honest, conscientious professionals.
Description of Work: Remove and replace leaky flat roof on a house with a skylight and a small penthouse leading to a deck (old deck was already removed). Leaks required repositioning of doorstep, some fiber-cement siding replacement, and new gutters and downspouts.

The flat roofs around our condo building were installed very poorly and we have had leak issues despite having the contractor "fix" them multiple times when we were under warranty. We were given the advice (from a general contractor) to pitch the roofs to stop the leaking, but when I called Tan's they explained to me why that would've been a very bad idea and gave me the information I needed to make the right decision. Their price was a little bit higher than other roofers, but since they were so knowledgeable and had been so honest and helpful I went with them. They did excellent work, documented with photos, and left everything clean and in great shape. We did have a bit of sticker shock with the cost of replacing the rotten wood they found once they had the roof off (which increased the price by more than 50%), which is more of an issue with the quote process than the work itself. While the cost was probably fair it would've been helpful if they had prepared us somewhat with a range or something if they knew it was a possibility. Particularly in dealing with a condo association (its easier to get everyone to sign off on the maximum up front than get grief when you have to go back to get approval for a 50% increase). If we use them again I would need to be very comfortable that I knew what the potential for additions would be. They also delayed our start date several times, which was just a relatively minor inconvenience because our job wasn't an emergency.
Description of Work: Tan's replaced flat roofs over our front porch and bay window areas (including replacement of rotten wood, flashing, etc.).
